The food was mediocre but greasy, and the staff was friendly, but there were lots of problems. First, the glasses and silverware were dirty. There were pretty flowers at the entrance, but they attracted a lot of bees, which were a significant nuisance. More importantly, the menu prices have no bearing on what you're expected to pay. I ordered something that was marked at $6.40 on the menu, and the charge on the receipt was $8.00. Additionally, there was a random $2 charge. When I asked about it, the server said that they add charges because they haven't updated the menus for a long time. An extra $3.60 isn't going to break me, but that's more than 150% than what was on the menu. Very disappointing, definitely not coming back. read more

You hear a lot these days about supporting local restaurants during this pandemic. Hellas does not appear to need the business. We arrived at 1o'clock, the outdoor temperature was 67°. We were told their outdoor seating was closed for the season ( the forecast for the next four days is in the 70° range). I'm writing this review because I'm sick and tired of the falsehoods being posted about Hellas. First of all the food is to die for. We've been coming here since 1998. Imagine that, 20 years and we've never had an issue with the food - unlike some of the other posters. I wonder why? Maybe because we're not trying to trash the place for God knows what reason. Second, yes there was a 5% surcharge. But that was because they didn't want to spend the money to print new menus. Not the best move, but is that a reason to trash a place? Then I've seen posts about one of the servers, Nicole. She's the nicest person you could ever hope to wait on you, but someone trashed her for God knows what reason. Flys and ants? OK maybe there was a fly in the place. But as long as there are doors and as long as there are restaurants once in a while flys will buzz around you. My solution - stay home. I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll leave you with a suggestion. Don't eat at Hellas. More tables and more food for me! read more

When we lived in Powell, we ate at Hellas regularly. They have huge portions and the omelettes could easily be shared. I usually get the fried cheese wrap or a half order of the french toast. The sausage is really good as well. I get a half order of that too, since a full order is giant. Breakfast and lunch here are both good. We went last week at 1 pm They close at 2 pm We were seated, ordered and then....the heat was shut off, even staff was cold...they were shutting off lights in side room...then the bucket and mop to clean the floor with intense odor of cleaning fluid set right in the room two tables from us. We went to Hellas for breakfast this morning. It's the second time we've been there but it's been quite awhile ago. We went on a Friday when a lot of people were off work in observance of Veteran's Day so it was a bit more crowded than a normal Friday morning. We had to wait about 6-7 minutes for a table, which was close to the door and was a bit chilly for the cold morning we were there. I noticed several people were eating with their coats on. I decided to add a cup of hot tea to whatever I ordered. We looked over the menu. My husband looked it up to see if he had done a Yelp review when we were here the last time and if so, what we had ordered. He said I ordered the 2+2+2, meaning 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, & 2 pieces of bacon. That sounded wonderful so I ordered it again. Our food came fairly quickly and everything was correct. But they don't give you just 2 pieces of bacon No! There were probably 6 pieces of nice crispy bacon! Yum! I could not have been happier. All of my food was really good. Eggs perfectly over medium and the 2 pancakes were very light and fluffy. So now you're probably wondering why I didn't give this place 5 stars, right? Ok 2 reasons. First, there is only 1 bathroom. The restaurant is very causal, with emphasis on the causal. A small dining room and bar make the place feel a bit packed. I've been to the restaurant two times for breakfast now, and it has been busy both times. Most recently, I found a spot at the bar and even though the restaurant was busy and there were only two servers, I was greeted very quickly. Hellas has a Greek orientation, but there are certainly options for a good 'ol American breakfast. I settled on the "2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 strips of bacon" option and a cup of coffee (for only $8 plus tax and tip!) My food was ready lickity split, and my, was there a lot of it! I was given four strips of bacon and the scrambled eggs definitely looked like more than two eggs. The bacon was perfect. I love a very crispy piece of bacon, almost close to burnt. This hit the spot. And the pancakes were delicious as well. The eggs were eggs. I'm not a huge fan of eggs, so I'm not quite sure why I ordered them. Don't let the name fool you. This is full blown breakfast diner fare with some sandwiches for lunch. A breakfast blog cued me into this hidden gem. This is tucked in around the corner from the zoo entrance. It looks to me like the locals are cued in to this breakfast menu. We came out on a fall morning around 930am. The drive on Riverside with the changing colors made for a pleasant scenery. I imagine trying to get here during any kind of heavy traffic day for the Columbus Zoo, or Zoombeezee Bay will make it frustrating. A small ground level sign alerted us to a large house structure on the East side of the road. A private parking lot with picnic tables covered by a porch stood out on the face. No one was dining outside, but it made for seating, while waiting for a table. Medium diner size inside with more than a dozen tables and a counter. No blaring TV's or music to fill the void. Just lively conversation, and the sound of silverware hitting plates. Quite the dance was going on by the smiling servers, skillfully moving between the tables. With full plates and drinks aloft, and hot coffee refills a reach away. Customers see it, know it, and acknowledge it. This is a friendly joint. Other reviews warn of a temper that comes from the owners/brothers in the back of the house, but I saw none of it. I did hear from a nearby regular that it's hard to keep good servers because of this temper. A quick dash for the 2 counter seats, and we were off to the races. We were met with a prompt greeting and introduction. After announcing our first time visit, we were told a lot about the offerings. "What are you known for that I can't get anywhere else" is always my first question. "Our French Toast is fantastic, and a house favorite with the regulars." A quick look around showed many tables had plates with French toast or omelettes. "You can get a half order also." SOLD! Let's get this party going with some Ciabatta appetizer. Now what are we going to order? The thick coffee mug never hit bottom. Kym was given a tea kettle of hot water to accompany her mug of hot water for tea. A little put off by the exclusion of her favorite tea, but found a substitute. 33 omeletts are listed on the menu into 5 categories. That's substantial. I went on the recommendation of the blogger. The Egg Pita Wrap described shrimp, crab, green onion, feta, and roasted tomato served on a warm pita. Normally I would have a lot of up front questions before ordering seafood in Ohio. I found 4 large shrimp, and lump crab meat. How about that? Because I put a cover plate over it to keep it hot while we finished the Ciabatta, I condensated the pita. This added moisture let me fold and hold the pita for only one bite before collapsing. Oh well. Warm pita parts to push around the meal to my fork. This could have been next level, if only served with a horseradish remoulade sauce. I went with the Cholula hot sauce for flavor. Not enough pop. You know I'm carrying my CaJohn's Fire Dust. BAM! Now the party continues. Kym went with the 2x2x2(as the locals call it) eggs, bacon, pancakes. *Note to all- 2 bacon on every plate we saw, must refer to, how much bacon can the cook pick up with 2 fingers. It's a minimum of 4. Eggs were cooked just right. Bacon went back at her request for extra crispiness. Pancakes were light and fluffy at about 6". Food out of the kitchen takes a bit longer than normal, but I am ok with having it cooked right, and hot the first time. I would suggest ordering something easy as you sit down for hungry impatient eaters. Biscuits n gravy, oatmeal, fruit, toast, or their split daily muffin grilled in butter. There's no free Wi-Fi, let alone a footprint of social media. The highlight of this time gap is the union of staff that work together to insure every guest is being attended to. Very friendly and helpful with continuous refills, and place clearings. This teamwork is built on the sharing of earned tips. Tip for the entire experience, not just the server who took your order. Now look over your shoulder at everybody waiting by the door. As a regular(former Nancy's Home Cooking server) seated next to us remarked. "They really need a sign that says, Eat, Pay, Get out". In case your device does let you see the "TIPS" section for this restaurant... You may be shocked to see a 5% add on to your guest check. Don't worry, you did nothing wrong. The owners wanted to raise the prices on the menu, but decided to not have them re-printed, and just add on the increase to the bottom line. I have been a loyal Hellas customer since they were a shack across the street (anyone remember Jenny?), so it really hurts me that I have to give them 4 stars. Flashback, I remember coming home from college and my mom and sister taking me to this shack and telling me that it is a great breakfast. I was a little skeptical being in a little room with three tables, a counter and a beverage case with OJ, milk and pop, but I knew I could trust them. This was back in the day when you could smoke inside restaurants. They had a sign saying something to the effect that whole place was a smoking section. At that time they only took cash. Once they moved to their current location, we didn't notice the credit card stickers on the door for over a year. Anyway, the french toast you get today is still the same french toast you got back then. French type bread with a dusting or powdered sugar and cinnamon. I think out of the millions of times that I have gotten the french toast, it has only been soggy in the middle one time. I don't know how they do it, but I sure wish I could make french toast like this at home, but then I wouldn't need to go to Hellas. And if you come here for breakfast, you can't order without getting a side of home fries. The medium sliced potatoes are great smothered with cheese and onions. I can taste the crispy potatoes as I type this review. My dad always orders the oven dried tomato omelet. I wasn't a big fan of eggs till recently, but this omelet looked great. They have a huge list of omelets to choose from or you can build your own. All the prices on the menu are very reasonable. The down fall to Hellas is that it is becoming too popular. It went from a shack to dining room with about 8 tables with a counter, but now they have added on to their restaurant creating room for many more tables. This has caused a problem in the kitchen. I know when I go to Hellas to expect a wait to get a table, but the wait recently to get my food has just been a little ridiculous. Waiting a half hour for breakfast food just seems too long to me. I know this won't stop be from going to Hellas, but it has detoured me when I know I don't have the time for breakfast to take up half of my day. If you have never been to Hellas, don't be scared of the wait because the food is excellent and worth trying out at least once. But watch out, you might get addicted. read more

None of us ordered rye toast so no one responded. He then said "it doesn't take an engineer" as he angrily shoved the plates toward our table. Went here for breakfast with my family on a Sunday. I ordered pancakes and sausage, pretty simple order. They were out of chocolate chips, which is fine, so they said they could put berries on top(but not inside the pancakes???). I got them and there were no berries on top. My aunt and I were both convinced that the "homemade" sausage patty was actually a hamburger, but it was actually just terrible sausage. The pancakes weren't the best, but they weren't awful. It was packed but we lucked out with a table. While all the staff were very friendly and attentive, there was a LONG wait for food. Lucky my boyfriend and I weren't in a rush.
