This was my first visit to Happy Bao. It took me a while to find this little gem tucked within the Mekong Palace Mall. After walking around the plaza in the heat , I finally called for directions. I had my heart set on their 鲜肉小笼包 Xiao Long Bao, although there were many menu items that definitely appealed to me, e.g., Dan Dan Noodles, Beef Chow Fun. The menu has a customer favorite section in front, which is helpful for someone who is not familiar with this type of cuisine (like me-LOL). The service was excellent. Two cheerful waitresses checked in and gave me pointers on the traditional way to savor the dumplings with thin threads of fresh ginger on top , snuggled in their special sauce... Handmade deliciousness made onsite by the family owners. The restaurant is authentic and on the small side . It was almost full when I left at 4 pm. Try to arrive early if you want to be seated right away. I love trying locally owned restaurants and can't wait to return and enjoy some of their other offerings. I highly recommend Happy Bao...food and service rate 5 stars ! read more

Seafood XLB, smashed cucumbers, Dan Dan noodles + custard buns are always my husband and I'd fav choices! The servers are usually pretty attentive, service is fast and food is great! My only 2 complaints are: 1. That although they say they're closed at 9, they stop serving at 830 so when we showed up hoping we made it in time, we were told by the younger girl who works there that the kitchen is closed! Hate when that happens, I guess I expect that if a customer is there before the time they say they close, then they should honor their biz hours and serve that customer! 2. We love their custard bun and sometimes won't order it at the end because 4 is just too many, please add the option for 2 buns! It's not the same when you take it home vs. eating it fresh! We don't have a DinTaiFung in AZ, so this is a really similar choice if you're craving soup dumplings!! So so good. read more

So this is a review for the chili dumplings, chili wonton, and Dan Dan noodles. The reason for this is due to the long wait time. I'm not talking about the line. We ordered our food and it took 35+ minutes for the first item to come out. And it only came out because I went to ask about it! Chili Dumplings - This was the first item to come out after 35+ minutes of waiting. It came out warm like it was left for a while and the flavor was okay. It wasn't that great but I'm not saying that it's bad either. 1/5 Chili Wonton - This is the second item that came out. It came out 3 minutes after but this was much better. The wonton came out hot so no complain there. 4/5 Dan Dan Noodles - This was the last item. It came out 5 minutes after the second item. The flavor is okay. It was light and not too strong on any flavor. I would recommend for any person starting or trying Chinese food. 4/5 The food was mediocre and in the end not too bad or too good either. The problem I had with this was waiting for the food. I'm fine with waiting but it does get annoying when you watch people who come 5-10 minutes after get their entire meals before you. They did give a discount as an apology so they were trying to improve. read more

I came here for an early dinner on a Thursday. There was no wait at all. I had the Xiao long bao which came out fairly quickly. I wish that the soup dumplings were at a hotter temperature. I would have enjoyed them more. The staff was attentive. I would come back to try more items off the menu. read more

I had seen this on my Facebook feed. Went to try last night. Highly recommend! I had the seafood wonton soup. Broth was excellent, both wontons and noodles were very very good! Can't wait to try other items on menu read more

No happy ending for me here!!! Hope u get yours!! #8 (see pic) was a pretty unique bao. Fried to a hard crisp on the bottom & soft as a pillow on top. Never had a bao quite like it before! It's definitely tastier than #10, but sadly, it just didn't make me jump up for joy! It sure took mighty long for our baos to appear as well, which is fine, but it gave me too much time to anticipate and long for those cute baos, so it may have added to my disappointment when they were sub par in the taste department. The night was still young, and I was determined to get my happy ending. Low and behold, Tea Snow Boba & Coffee was but a few steps away! Needless to say, u better believe I got mine!!! ;) read more

Happy Bao's is a small busy restaurant located in the Mekong Plaza. This restaurant specializes in dumplings and bao but also offers a few other dishes. On the day of my visit it seemed like one person was waiting on all the tables but did get help from others. She waited on all the tables close to the kitchen. We were the last to be waited on. Same problems getting our food. A table that came in much latter than us got three separate courses before we got anything. We were about to leave. Finally our order arrives Chicken Cabbage Dumplings and Tofu Vegetable Bun. They didn't put any seasoning or cabbage in the Chicken Cabbage Dumplings so they didn't taste good. I thought the Bao was ok but my husband didn't like it. Nobody asked us how things were and nobody cared either. The bao might be happy but not all of the customers are. read more

This place is so so The unique thing about this place is they offer some baos that I never seen before. But the baos I ordered with fried bottom and sesame sprinkled tasted like regular baos, maybe worse. The price is rather adequate. My dan dan noodles cost $8. The baos were more pricey. I didn't want to order Xiao Long Bao because they are $12 for 8 baos (or 10, I forgot) I honestly will come back again because I want to try some other noodles. read more

I had the vegetable Bao, it was very good, crispy on the bottom and steamed on top. I was worried the 6 pieces wouldn't be enough, but it was very filling. I ordered a side of fried rice just to be safe and it was more than enough. Everything tasted great! I'll be ordering the exact same thing next time. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE. The dumplings are to die for. They need to rent more space or move. When I first started going there the word was not out. So I enjoyed my hot soup filled delicious dumplings at a table with my friends. The last two times I've been there you couldn't get in the door, and obviously no where to sit. The service was always good, but brusk. I'm not Asian. The wait staff is. When I go with my friends the staff is Kirt and borderline rude. When I go with my half Asian 15 year old granddaughter the service is friendly and even helpful . I found this ODD. Don't you? And I know what you're thinking...yes she doesn't look like her grandma. I thought they were just nicer because she was young. Then I brought her full blooded sister 13 to the same place and she Does look like her grandma. And funny thing....same server not friendly or helpful with ordering as she was with the 15 year old. But in spite of their clearly bias opinion of non- Asian Americans, I gave them five stars for the food. I share the warning about the service as a courtesy to those who do not appear to be Asian by sight. If you are bothered by bigots eat elsewhere. If you only care about the flavor of the food this is the BEST dumpling place within 50 miles. I'm not a big baby about these things so I've eaten there at least a dozen times and ignore the servers. Get the broth filled dumplings you'll never eat any other kind again! read more

This place is AMAZING. I love the visual menu. Every food item pictured in the menu is perfectly arranged and very colorful. Gives the customer a wonderful glimpse into the eyes of the chef. The actual food presentation is beautiful and thoughtful. **They carry canned coke products - A bonus star!! The Pork Sheng Jian Bao is like puffy art. The outer breading is so fluffy and soft- the pork is tender and flavorful. The hot and sour soup is my favorite! The chili dumplings come in a set of 8 and are delicious alone, but I would absolutely add them to one of their signature soups or broth. I love the ambience- small, yet open, bright and clean. The restaurant was busy today, Thursday, 2/2/23 around noon, but it only took about 15 minutes to get my to-go order. I brought my food home. It traveled very well and was still hot 20 minutes later. I would list this place on my top five choices if I were having a party and wanted something simple, easy and pretty to serve. Makes great finger food as well as a full entree. It is very inexpensive and I don't think I could make the three dishes at home any less expensive than buying it from someone who knows what they are doing. I tried really hard with my food photos as I wanted to do it justice. Ten stars if I could! read more

Been wanting to try this place for a minute now, finally had some time to kill yesterday so I decided to stop by. It wasn't my favorite, then again I've been spoiled with what San Francisco and Chicago have to offer on their side of Chinatown but, it wasn't bad. It just wasn't great. Here's what I had. Fu Qi Fei Pian - This was actually pretty good, it was a mix of tripe, beef and pork slices tossed in a spicy chili oil/sauce. Definitely worth ordering for an appetizer. Xiao Long Boa (Soup Dumplings) - Pork, Scallions & Chicken Broth. These we're decent, lacked flavor but did the job since I was craving soup dumplings. Nothing special for me, I'm not trying to know the place it just wasn't great. But decent. Roujiamo (Chinese Hamburger) - This was another item that I enjoyed, had a lot of flavor, probably my favorite item in the order. Toasty boa buns stuffed with Pork, Scallions, Cilantro & Green Peppers. Another item worth ordering. Lamb Noodle Soup - I was super excited for this dish, if you've read any of my previous post or follow me on IG, you know lamb is one of my favorite foods to eat. So the anticipation was hyped. Majorly. But again, this dish just lacked flavor, was extremely gamey, and trust me I know, it's lamb I've had it a million times but a little salt and flavorings can go a long ways. Nothing special about it for me. This dish had so much potential, even to the look it looked amazing but for me, no. Give it a try, maybe your experience is different from mine but. Didn't live up to the hype for me. I wish the restaurant well though. read more

This is a nice place for people wanting an entry into Chinese foods as it is very easy to find something that is more palatable to the American tastes. You will find soup dumplings and grilled buns famous in Shanghai style cooking. I had the seafood wonton soup and it was made with house made noodles and wontons and was very filling and delicious. I also wanted to try the wontons in chili sauce as it is a favorite of mine when I go to Din Tai Fung. It was not as good as their chili sauce but the wontons were better. Service was good and there is not much ambiance to the place. It is a small shop within Mekong plaza. read more

Fresh and yummy dumplings! I loved the soup dumplings - not too thick of a skin and piping hot. The beef chow fun was good too.

Went to happy bao today and give it somewhere around eight or nine. I had beef chow fun and it was delicious and then I ordered some soup.bao and the were also good.. My friends ate fried rice and Kung pow and they enjoyed that. They were really funny about whether or not we sat inside or outside and so we sat a large table outside of there restaurant, but inside the building because they suggested we do that and not leave a tip. I didn't quite understand that. But overall, it was good and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Chinese. read more

Very typical way of how a Chinese Restaurant operates their business.. No communication to the public in regards to Hours of Operation. Drove Thirty-Minutes to find a note on their front door stating: "From this Day Forward, Happy Baos will be closing every Monday's to prep in order to meet the demand of our hand wrapped dumplings for the week. Sorry for the inconvenience". No worries, but you may want to update both your Website, Google, AND Yelp pages to inform customers? Truly a waste of time of my time and will not be returning.. read more

Awesome place, so many different types of dishes to try. I am from the east coast originally and have been starving for good Asian cuisine. This place has some flavors that are traditional and some new ones that I love. The pork bao is great and I tried the beef noodle soup which had very good flavor and what I assumed was beef short rib. If you are feeling adventurous try the beef with chili,#3 on the appetizer menu. It is made with tripe and was great! I will be coming back to try the myriad of things they have here. read more

It is inside a mall. A small spot right on a corner. Doesn't seem like much, but the menu will tell you a different story. I ordered the pot stickers and a beef soup. It was carry out. It arrived fresh and delicious. The soup was very good. I had enough leftovers for next day, so it was a great portion. It's a tiny place with only a few tables, yet it takes forever to get served. I sat outside on a table that was empty, they could have easily served there & send me on my way. I was truly hoping would be that easy but Instead I was asked to get up so it can be used by someone else, but then it still remained empty for the 25 minutes So, it just tells they are really not ready for real traffic but really wish they were and they could provide a quicker better experience. So, this is the place for a good bite... But not a quick bite. But it's all good. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE if you would like to be asked to move to another table in the food court while eating your meal! My husband and I had an early lunch, but our son wanted to go to Happy Bao's for his lunch. I took him in to order food to go instead of dine in so while my husband and son waited for the food, I could do some grocery shopping. The food came out sooner than I was done, so my husband decided to let him start eating while they waited for me to finish my groceries. My son sat at the corner outside dining table to eat his food. I called my husband to come to the market because I was getting ready to check out. My son had a few bites left of his food so my husband left him there to finish his food. Soon as my husband left, the younger girl with the glasses came out and asked my son to move to the food court table to finish his food in case they had a big group come in and needed the table. Immediately, my son wrapped his food in the bag and called to ask where I was so he can come over to me. I asked him how come you didn't stay and finish your food and he said they didn't allow him to sit there so he's just going to eat it later in the car. MIND YOU!! You brought the food out to him, you knew what he was eating was from your restaurant, so learn to treat your customers with respect regardless if they're a kid or adult!!! We are your paying customers and regardless if it was a to-go order we bought the food from you what doesn't give us the right to sit at your outside table to eat our food? Soon as I checked out my groceries, I walked right over to their restaurant to check and see if they were busy and needed their tables. Surely enough, the whole restaurant was empty inside out except for ONE small dine in table inside so what was the reason for asking a 14 yo kid to leave while he was finishing his food outside and there was absolutely no customers that needed to use your dining tables?! The lady I spoke to explained that her staff was young and didn't know better then I suggest you'll need to train your staff some proper manners! She apologized and offered something complimentary. No thanks! We didn't come to you for free food, but if we came to support your business and this is how you treat your paying customers, then surely this will be the last! Attached are photos of the bag my poor son had hurry to wrap up his food and never got to finish all of it. This food went straight to the trash! I have never written a review at any restaurant before, but never have I experienced this at any business. This place needs to learn and do better!! read more

This has become one of my favorite places in Arizona. My first bite of the beef from the spicy beef noodle soup had me in happy tears. Fried rice and handmade dumplings are to die for. Oh and the noodles are also handmade. The place is small and there's usually a wait but they are quick, and it's worth the wait. Not to mention you can walk around Mekong Plaza while you wait for their text. I saw so many to go orders fly out the door while we ate. They really take pride in delivering fresh, from scratch, homemade food. If I lived closer, I'd be there several times a week. We are already planning our next visit! read more

I thought this place was delish. If you like dumplings and baos I highly recommend that you give this place a chance. You can tell that their food is homemade and they don't just walk next door to the market to buy their dumplings and baos. One thing you must try there is the Sheng Jian Baos. Those had soo much flavor and melt in your mouth. They do take a while to steam, but they are highly worth the wait. ENJOY! read more
