One of the best surprises during my recent trip back to NYC was to find to find Hanyang Boonshik not only open, but open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I was under the wrong impression that they, along with many other late night spots, had either shortened their hours or simply closed during the pandemic. Being wrong has never felt so great. This place is one of those IYKYK (#1) establishments in that there is no proper storefront, but is located inside of the Hangyang Supermarket (#2) along Northern Blvd. The in-store entrance has the words "HY Food court Snack Corner" which is confusing for first timers but adds a well deserved hidden gem status that it's proud to flaunt. The interior looks somewhat updated, with less dingy tables to group seating and more decor on top of it. The kitchen is constantly active, with dishes constantly being churned out and what I imagine is an endless list of delivery order requests. There is nothing that stands out about food for me, but it's good enough in a pinch. Their kimchi steamed mandoo dumpling was very excent while the other regular panfried mandoo was a tinge mediocre. Their soondubu, japchae, kimbap, and tteokbokki were very mild and average in comparison to what's out there. This is also the location for 92 Chicken, a KFC joint that prepares the food in the very same kitchen. Service isn't the warmest, but they do speak Korean and Mandarin with a limited amount of English. Parking is in a dedicated lot and there is a 3% fee for all credit card purchases. A super discrete hole in the wall eatery that's opened all night offering delicious authentic korean street foods? I'm in there like swimwear. This place is a place that definitely deserves more attention than it gets. ( although the late night korean drinking crowd certainly knows of this place ) tucked away in the corner of the entrance of Hangyang super market, this place offers a wide variety of quality street foods at twilight hours. I've been here twice and so have had the spicy chicken gizzard, fermented skate with horse radish, and the sauteed spicy pork. The gizard was average if not mediocre, but the other two dishes I had were definitely noteworthy The fermented skate with horseradish is definitely on the list of the more bizarre and interesting foods I've ever had. Though the smell of amoena wafted around my nose and was pretty hard to bare at times, the flavor combination with the fish the horseradish and soysauce worked all in compliments of one another! the horseradish did a fantastic job of overpowering and overtaking the bizarre fermented smell, which then allowed the taste buds to focus on the incredibly savory and umami filled flavor of the fish, clean and full of flavor I would definitely recommend this dish for the more adventerous eater The spicy pork, which is something that I get regularly at all fast casual korean eateries that I go to. This place has one of the best versions I've ever had. Intensely spicy ( which I love ) with a great combination of savory, sweet mixed in with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and carmalized onions and jullianed carrots, the combinations of flavors were incredible and tasted incredible intense with no one flavor overpowering the other with the subtle hint of sesame to wrap all the flavors together, definitely a must when you're here. the only reason why this place gets a knock off of a star was due to the soapy tasting complimentary soup I received the last time I was here. Cheap, quick, and nothing fancy, but gets the job done. For what it is, it's a good bang for your buck. You'll find all your typical Korean street foods here at all hours of the day. Service is quick and efficient. You'll find an eclectic mixture of drunk college kids getting their late night fried food fix, as well as old, drunk Korean men getting their soju on. My staples are the large fish cake soup for $5 (it's also a surprisingly awesome soju chaser), the fried mandoo ($6) are crunchy and the perfect bite sized portions, and the kimbap ($5) which is simple, but the sesame oil gives it a nice nuttiness. I also see a lot of people ordering the dukbokki (spicy rice cakes), but I'm not a huge fan in general, as well as the ribs. If you're looking to get a quick, no frills Korean fix, and perhaps get a little soju wasted while you're at it, this is your place. P.S. We also tried the fermented soybean stew today. Yes, the kal sujaebi is not very photogenic due to the micro-bead looking black sesame particles. However, my mom LOVES it. It might possibly be one of her favorite things to eat outdoors. This place is so hidden that not a lot of people know about it. My friend was so surprised when we brought her here lol. You literally have to go into hanyang market and it's at the corner, through a tiny door. Parking won't be a problem since you just park in the supermarket parking lot. We ordered fried dumplings, toppokki, army stew, and an ox bone and shank stew. Shared these between 4 people and we were all really full. All my friends love the army stew, it doesn't have too strong of a kimchi taste, and they give you a pack of shin ramen for you to add into it. The ox bone soup was kind of plain to me. The toppokki was a bit on the spicy side but not that bad. I liked the fried dumplings, super crunchy with a good amount of fillings. Downside is that they have an open door at the corner, so if it's cold, wind will come through, and you can smell cigarette, so be aware if you don't like the smell of it. Overall a nice and authentic Korean food place to chill. I believe they're 24 hrs, so people come here to sober up and get food after alcohol! Don't get confused, their entrance is through a small rugged door off to the side of the entrance from their parking lot, or there is an entrance from inside the Hanyang market. This place is cash only and you kind of have to be able to read Korean to order. I've seen non-asians there so maybe they took the time to ask the guy what is good, they might have an english version menu, but I've never seen it before. The main guy who takes orders has been there for a while. Total ma&pop store. You tell the guy your order and you can sit on any of the wooden cafeteria tables. There are cups for water and utensils you get for yourself. It is such a relaxing, casual environment and they open til late. It's not for studying or staying a long time! It's for popping in, eating, and leaving. The food is authentic korean that are popular in pop-up tents in South Korea and the price is so generous for big portions. I feel like this place used to be the go to place after a drunken night or for some late night snacks. It USED to be cheap and did taste a lot better years ago. Picked up some soondae (korean blood sausage) to take out and that very same night at 3AM, I woke up throwing up endlessly. After realizing that I've gotten *FOOD POISONING* from the soondae (I didn't have any other meals that day until the soondae), I promised myself to never eat there even though I'm craving boonshik (korean fast food). I am now scarred while recovering. They are dirty and also heard that they replace the batter for the hotdog on the stick with new batter after time has passed and leave the sausage that's inside. They are such darling memories to anyone who's spent winter in Korea, and it's such a big part of Korean culture. This place has customers because it's cheap, convenient, has variety, and open 24 hours. No other reason. The man who takes your orders isn't even friendly. He seems to never listen to your order, but somehow he knows and can calculate your bill in seconds. Recently, I ordered the ddukbokki, chicken feet, pig skin, and soondae. The ddukbokki and soondae were JUST ok and the other dishes were still a bit cold. They didn't microwave it long enough. The pig skin was nowhere crispy and just pieces of fat. But how am I going to complain for $7 dishes? I didn't dare drink their soup because I have a little childhood trauma of tasting soap when I drank their soup. Ever since my korean friend introduced me to the place, I use to make late night runs and pick up literarly buckets of that stuff to take home! The place itself isn't much to look and in the winter time it can get really cold :O but the food makes up for it! This place was actually super hard to find. Even after looking it up on Yelp, once i got there i couldn't find it. you can't access the restaurant from the outside. You have to actually enter the korean supermarket and its INSIDE the supermarket (on the back left side). I can see why the review criticizes the owners (esp. if your not korean). I found the owners not necessarily rude..just old..and stubborn in his ways...he doesn't really have manners and will just talk to you straight up. Just think he is typical old korean man. Came here around 11pm after I got off work late with my hubby. I always enjoy their spicy rice cakes cuz it's sweet and chewy and delicious However I was not impressed after this visit. We got naeng-myun, soondae (with intestines), ddukbokki, and o-deng. Their soondae is overpriced cuz they charge $10 if you get intestines too. The naeng myun also not cheap at $10 The only cheap ones are o-deng (fish cake soup) and ddukbokki (spicy rice cakes) but it wasnt great. The soup in o-deng tasted like SOAP... Like wtf ... The soup is supposed to be the best part... The only decent thing was the ddukbokki. I should try other things on their menu. Man I've been going to this place since it was nothing but a counter next to the wall of the supermarket. No tables, no chairs, no walls! The place has definitely evolved over the years, but thankfully the odeng gook (fish patty soup) and soondae (blood sausage) has not changed. The ddokbokki (rice cakes in hot sauce) have changed and is not nearly as spicy as it used to be, but it's not bad. Prices are fairly cheap but it is cash only. Food is usually delish and haven't had a problem with their service yet. I normally get my food to go as the place is usually busy even late at night. I'm not sure if the ajusshi who is usually at the front taking orders speaks English. But, even if you don't speak Korean I'm sure he will be more than willing to accommodate with some finger pointing at the menu or the food. I am totally in love with their hand cut noodles which has a nice chewy texture. Their korean fried hotdog is also a must try. It's basically a fried corn dog but not as soft. a good stop if it's raining ... usually a quick stop for take outs ... things to eat here are 1. dukbokki (large rice noodles in a spicy red paste sauce with pieces of fish cake) very good 2. dul gae noodle soup (a type of seed similar to sesame ground and made into a base comes served with chewy handmade rice noodles) best dish they offer and only place I've tried this. 2. blood sausage (hit or a miss) 3. ramen (at 5 bucks it's a moneymaker for them) not homemade. 4. spicy chicken fingers (not the deep fried kind ... the actual feets of chicken) 5. fried tempura (good) they serve soju ... and can get packed ... picnic style tables ... the food here is just good ... with the exception of their new dish (dul gae noodle) avg 3 stars for food the owner makes up for the 4th star ... she's very accommodating.
