Mehhh. I've had much better pho. Maybe the banh mi's are better? I had the grilled chicken with beef broth noodle soup. They kinda skimped out on the noodles and the broth was mediocre. Even with the people in front of me who ordered bahn mis, they're supposed to be quickly assembled. Anyone who's ever been to a viet super market with a little food court can attest to how quickly these are usually assembled by a pair of quick hands. Cold cut bahn mi: 1. sandwich bread was legit Vietnamese baguette which I recognized and can appreciate. 2. I ordered a cold cut sandwich but not only was the bread hot, the whole thing was hot (this is how I knew things were a little off). The primary meat was not a cold cut but a type of flavored meatball/meatloaf. It was quite tasty, but not what I ordered or expected 3. The pate is either non-existent, or tastes just like plain mayo. There was no visible pate (again, not very authentic) 4. The quick pickles were nice, but TERRIBLY distributed. I'll submit photos, and you can see how all the pickles are on one side of the sandwich. I literally had to alternate bites on the sandwich and I would get entire bites of pickles, entire bites of meat. 5. All said, it was still tasty but for the mistakes, I'm not sure it's worth $7.25 (especially when I'm used to banh mi for just under $5) The vietnamese ice tea was pretty good, not too sweet, and still pretty milky. A great go-to spot if you want some quick Vietnamese food. I usually get the rice vermicelli salad and add grilled pork chops on top or a banh mi. I always get a fruit tea on the side. Every time I happen to be in Carroll Gardens, I stop at Hanco's for a banh mi and a bubble tea. Their banh mi may not be the cheapest ones around ($5.50), but they're really damn good. My favorite is the classic: roasted ground pork, Vietnamese ham, pate', mayo, butter, cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon radish, and cilantro. The carrots and radish are nice and cruncy, exactly the way you want them to be, and the ground pork is very flavorful without being greasy at all. And the cilantro is so refreshing! They could do with a bit more pate', though. The sardine banh mi is also very good. Whiteys beware: if you ask for a spicy banh mi, you're going to get a HOT sandwich! Not unbearably hot, but enough to make you cry (beware of the big pieces of jalapeno). Their bubble teas (milk tea and flavored tea) are $3.75. I particularly like the honeydew and the taro milk tea. The worse sin was the Green Tea with Honey Bubble Tea. It was watered down tea and you could not get the Green Tea Taste. Though this place has been here for a long time, and we've seen it in passing many times, we never gave it a try and never gave it a thought. Truth be told, we didn't think banh mi in this area would be as good as it was here. On this particular day, we need a quick cheap bite before a big family dinner later on the in evening. So we popped into Hanco's, had a grilled chicken sandwich shared between us and an iced coffee. First impression, the banh mi was packed! Much meat, so much toppings, such yum. The flavor was great and consistent with any authentic banh mi place. The sandwich was hot and crispy in all the right places and the taste was perfect. There was Plenty of Rice Noodles, Lettuce, Cucumber And Mint Leaves. It was then topped with Roasted Peanuts, Fried Red Onion and served with a Vinaigrette on the side. It was so fresh and light and yet so filling. But since I am a glutton, I also ordered a classic Vietnamese Sandwich which is normally called a Bahn Mi. They take a toasted French baguette slathered it with mayo and butter. Then it stuffed with Pâté, Ham and Ground Beef and topped with thinly cut carrots, daikon, cilantro, and jalapeños. So when I climbed Half Dome over the summer, our party's staple food-for-energy supply came in a huge bag of loaves of banh mi from the local Vietnamese sandwich shop (tell em to separate the veg to keep from going soggy). Moral of the story---you can't get banh mi past mi. Really its 4.5 stars because it is expensive for banh mi standards. I guess its okay if its for the best banh mi in all of Brooklyn and prob Manhattan and Queens. The boba/bubble tea are a grade above the stuff you find in Chinatown. The place is a little hole in the wall off Bergen and is run by a friendly/rowdy bunch of Chinese people. The pork chop and classic are the ones you have to try, they also have veggie options. I had never been a banh mi enthusiast. Do not get me wrong, I used to enjoy an occasional Vietnamese sandwich from time to time. All that changed after I had stumbled to this little hole-in-the-wall on the corner of Bergen and Smith St. The way they prepare this bad boy has opened my eyes on how good a sandwich (not just a banh mi) can truly be. The heap of the pickled daikon radish & carrot provide the perfect acidity countering the savory elements of ground pork, pate, and Vietnamese ham. The trio of the meats work beautifully with the mayo in this sandwich. The baguette is fresh and the cilantro adds herbal freshness and crispness. The spiciness(they fine tune the heat level based on your preference) provides a great rush as well. I recall having it for the first time ever and being awe-struck from the disbelief of how good it was. Did I tear up? Did my eyes roll in the back of my head? I cannot recall exactly, but it was one of those rare experiences that us, food lovers, seek out. It made me the true banh mi believer - i was converted from that first bite. I remember once trying their grilled pork sandwich, for the sake of variety. It was pretty good but failed to amaze and did not stand out to me like their staple, the classic did. Since then, I have never made another attempt to try any of the other sandwiches on their menu (no need to experiment when you have a great thing going already). I work a 5 minute walking distance away, so I feel truly lucky to be able to frequent this place at least once a week. I have been to Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches on Atlantic Ave, which is not far away from Hanco's and as far as the banh mi goes, I don't even have to tell you who the clear-cut winner is. Hanco's is a no-brainer. Stop by, order a classic (or even 2, should you be really hungry), with a summer roll. When I bite into the toasty bun and savory chicken with pickled carrots, it transports me to Nirvana. At $6 a 'wich, the passage to Nirvana is quite economical and so-worth-it. I think the ladies recognize my face because of my frequency and one of them gave me a sandwich card the other day. I'm actually embarrassed but I keep returning. I've been meaning to try other dishes but I just can't get enough of the bun's toasty goodness. Tips: 1) I got the whole wheat today to be healthier but I regret my decision. It's not as toasty/crunchy as the white bread. So do yourself a favor and just get the white! 2) If you call in advance, they will usually have your order ready by the time you swing by. I know! I've been to two Hanco's locations, Smith Street and Montague Street. At the Montague Street location, I encountered a language barrier at the pickup counter, but persevered to get my satisfying sandwich. The tables at the Smith Street location weren't that clean. Unfortunately, both locations have an odd smell, maybe due to the tea they brew. Still, they both have A sanitary grades. I liked everything about this place! I was in the neighborhood with a couple of friends and one of them suggested we go to Hanco's for a quick bite. The space is small but clean and cute. I ordered the classic Vietnamese sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike a traditional banh mi made of baguette that's so hard it hurts your upper jaw, the bread they use is soft and pillowy, toasted to perfect crispiness, which goes really well the roast pork and pate and their "mayo"-like sauce. If you are into spicy, you can also stuff some jalapenos in your sandwich and drizzle as much sriracha as you'd like. My only wish is that they put their pho broth on their menu as a separate soup/side option. That would make me really happy. read more

I asked for a non-spicy Banh Mi and although many people before me expressed this Hanco's is great and their sandwiches are delectable, I just didn't feel that way. The bubble teas are good and food is okay but I have an issue with the prices now sandwiches are damn near $10.00 plus extra meat is $5.00. So basically you are spending over $25 dollars on yourself for some food but again it all depends on what you order. One of the best meals to have after a gym workout! Came here right after a workout at Blink. It was really crowded with only one table available, the one we took! It started emptying out as we ate our meal, but it's quite popular with the delivery and take-out orders. Had the grilled pork salad bowl for $9.50 while my friend had the beef pho and a green tea bubble tea. My go-to for a bowl of Pho or tradition Bahn Mi craving! Isn't the best I've had, but definitely hits the spot. They got the basics right. Great value, and decent flavors. The Beef Pho broth could do with more depth, but gets you there in terms of taste if you've had authentic Vietnamese pho before. The Bahn Mi uses ground pork, but traditionally uses different slices of cured meat. Still tastes good and will do for now! Hanco's has delicious tasting Bánh mì Vietnamese sandwiches for sure (note that their version of the popular ground pork variety is called the "Classic" on their menu). Their "Classic" ground pork Bánh mì is served on french bread with veggies (carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, etc.) and can be ordered mild, medium, or spicy. IMHO, although the ground pork is tasty and juicy, there's just too much bread and not enough meat. I saw where Hanco's has an option to add double meat to their sandwiches, but I'm not sure how that would work out because of the shape of the bread. Also, I ordered mine "medium" spicy, and it was hardly spicy. At any rate, the sandwich was good... don't get me wrong.... but maybe my expectations were set to high from all the reviews I read on Yelp! Every bite is like fireworks going off in your mouth from the different tastes and textures. The crispy warm bread, the deep Asian flavors of the meats along with the heat (I ordered mine medium because I must add Sriracha so I knew that would give it another bump) then you get the crunch and coolness of the bright, pickled veggies and cilantro.
