One of the best meals to have after a gym workout! Came here right after a workout at Blink. It was really crowded with only one table available, the one we took! It started emptying out as we ate our meal, but it's quite popular with the delivery and take-out orders. Had the grilled pork salad bowl for $9.50 while my friend had the beef pho and a green tea bubble tea. The grilled pork salad bowl is HUGE, I eat a lot normally and wasn't able to finish the last bite. The portion size is huge and they aren't sparing with the meat. My go-to for a bowl of Pho or tradition Bahn Mi craving! Isn't the best I've had, but definitely hits the spot. They got the basics right. Great value, and decent flavors. The Beef Pho broth could do with more depth, but gets you there in terms of taste if you've had authentic Vietnamese pho before. The Bahn Mi uses ground pork, but traditionally uses different slices of cured meat. Still tastes good and will do for now! As I continue on my quest for the perfect Bahn Mi, I have decided to try Hanco's, which has the best reputation in Brooklyn, for Bahn Mi. Although the bread was not as crusty as Paris Sandwich Shop, this was a better sandwich. You have options, so there is a bit of customization. You can have it mild, medium or spicy. Of course, with my penchant for chile, I ordered spicy and you can even have it on whole wheat, for an extra .75 cents. This time, I ordered the Classic Sandwich, made with ground pork, Vietnamese ham, pate and accompaniments. Their pickled carrots and daikon (at Paris Sandwich Shop, it was only carrots) was perfectly pickled with the correct balance of vinegar and sugar and added so much more flavor than the carrots that were in my Paris Sandwich. This had large stalks of cilantro, so it had the freshness I was missing at Paris. In conclusion, this filling in Paris's bread would be the perfect Bahn Mi! To me, Hanco's gives Lotus a run for its money for the best vegetarian banh mi! Came here and immediately wanted the vegetarian pork. Unfortunately, they were out and went for the vegetarian chicken instead. Despite being my 2nd choice, it made me totally happy. The veg chicken was in nice huge chunks and still steaming. The baguette was perfectly toasted and still fluffy on the inside. The pickled vegetables were fresh and crisp... and the protein to vegetable ratio was perfect. I finished in one sitting, so it was also perfectly sized. I will definitely be back... and need to try the vegetarian pork, as it is my new measuring stick. i have to admit, when i walked into hanco's for the first time, i was a bit skeptical. the menu is small and the restaurant does not have the vibe of the typical vietnamese restaurants that i am used to eating pho at. however, Hanco's is honestly really good. i always order the beef pho and it hits the spot every time. the broth of the soup has so much flavor, which isn't always the case at other restaurants. i also love their shrimp rolls, they're light, refreshing, and delicious. their items are also priced well. i would definitely recommend Hanco's if you're in the mood for pho :) read more

That classic bahn mi was pretty damn tasty. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge fan of the bahn mi's out on the east coast. I went to college near Westminster, CA which means amazing bahn mi's for a couple of dollars. But, my quest to find a tasty bahn mi ended up leading me to Hanco's. I think my sandwich was like $7 or $8 which is still under 10. and 5 dollars is like 10 in new york so I'll just say that it was a decent deal. The sandwich had all kinds of meats in there, great consistency and mixture of who knows what. The sauce that's in there is really what did it for me though. On the search again for Pho, I think I'm addicted. I found this place based on Yelp suggestions. Can't go wrong here. It serves a good Pho and well filling. The place is Cute, a bit small, but very friendly service. I had a Pho ga and summer rolls, which are fresh rolls, not fried. I took my order to go and in all honesty it would have helped if I had an extra empty container to mix up all the ingredients. I live 2 blocks away from Hanco's and this is the closest I got to Vietnamese food. For that, I'm super greatful and will continue to support their business. My go-to orders are: Classic Vietnamese Sandwich Grilled chicken Vietnamese Sandwich Beef pho with all types of beef without the raw slice of beef - this is because I usually take it to go or order deliver so the broth is not as hot as what you would get if you were at the restaurant. I think the blood kind of clouds the broth as well. They have good bubble tea beverages with so many varieties. Again, the closest I got without going across the bridge to Chinatown. This is solely based on the banh mi. I got the pork banh mi with medium level of spice and it was extremely flavorful. Granted it was my first time eating a banh mi sandwich but I know good food when I eat them. The bread was so crispy and the carrot and radishes in the sandwich was cold and crunchy with the perfect amount of dressing. Because we live in a west-facing apartment on the sixth floor of our building and don't have air conditioning set up yet, we decided it's time for a staycation before we melted. So we ended up getting a hotel for the night right near Hanco's! Being from Montgomery County in Maryland, I'm used to getting really good pho at least once ever couple of weeks. Here in Brooklyn, not so much... and not so authentic. However, for Brooklyn, where I don't get to have Bo Vien and tendon in my pho, this place was good and super fast carry out! I got the pho with grilled pork and the summer rolls, which were super fresh. I also got the decaf iced Vietnamese coffee which was super delicious. "It'll be eight dollars." Without really thinking about it, I pulled a ten from my wallet and handed it to the mousy looking cashier. It was only after grabbing a seat that I realized how much my meal cost. Eight dollars, really? I thought to myself. Eight?! Of course, an eight dollar meal is rather a steal in New York, a city where bars have the balls to charge you that much for a beer. But I didn't order a fancy microbrew or anything fancy-- I got bahn mi! For the folks who never got to try the dish, bahn mi, or Vietnamese sandwich, is a baguette sliced lengthwise and stuffed with some sort of meat and ribbons of pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro, onion, and jalapeno. Bahn mis are not only absolutely delicious, but they're also usually really cheap, something like $4 or less for a sandwich (I really like Saigon in Little Italy-- $3.75!). In fact, my love for bahn mis began in high school, because I realized that the local Vietnamese place sold sandwiches that were half the price of Subway subs but infinitely more edible. In disbelief, I checked the Hanco's menu-- $5.75 for pork bahn mi, $2.25 for Vietnamese iced coffee. This better be damn good, I thought. Hanco's is a tiny, but busy Vietnamese shop on Bergen Street and Smith. When my friend and I visited on a cold January afternoon, we were first met with a long line. Oh no, I thought, I'd hate to be without tables and be forced to eat outside in the cold. Luckily for us, most of the people in line were ordering to-go, and after ordering, my friend and I were able to snag a small wooden table in the rather crowded dining space. Looking at the growing line, I began to imagine that maybe Hanco's charged $2 more than I expected because their sandwiches are that much more delicious. Hanco's already had a strike in my book for being expensive, but that could easily be remedied by an exceptional sandwich. So we waited. And waited. And waited. Bahn mis, like your deli sub, usually take no more than 10 minutes to be made. At Hancos, my friend and I waited an excruciatingly long 30 minutes as we sat in the overheated shop listening to three 13 year old girls talk about boys. I winced every 30 seconds realizing I used to say the same exact things. When the food finally arrived, both my friend and I dove for the hot sandwiches. Just as I was about to take a bite, my friend commented, "aren't these things suppose to be on a baguette?" While there isn't a cardinal rule that states bahn mis have to be on a baguette, the hero-roll type bread that the sandwich was made with was a inferior substitution. Not only was it smaller (less food), but it didn't offer as many texture variation as a baguette (who am I kidding? I, like every other girl raised in America, love a good baguette. End of story). I hated the sandwich from Hanco's. It wasn't just the bread-- it was everything! While the grilled pork was well cooked, it had that distinctive Chinese food flavor to it that I couldn't shake off. While I'm not a stickler for authenticity, I hated that this flavor ran foul with the cilantro. And unfortunately, because their bahn mi spread used way too much mayo, I couldn't even taste the vegetables other than the cilantro and the jalapeno. This already made a really bad sandwich, but what I really hated was their "spicy" sauce which was just Sriracha sauce. Had I known that their spicy sauce was just that, I would have gotten the regular and added the sauce myself, instead of being forced to eat a sandwich in which the hot sauce was indiscriminately poured on. And here we come to the embarrassing point in the story. I came here while my lip piercings were still somewhat fresh... and I got Sriracha sauce in. I almost cried. Boy did Hanco's do the trick. The flavors were amazing in the beef phô; we both were so full but did not want to stop eating. Quite possibly the worst location in Brooklyn. Was craving bubble tea so went to the Smith St location. Upon entering, the placed smelled like the garbage seriously needed to be taken out. The staff were rude and my taro was chalky and gross. Wound up throwing it out after a couple sips it was that bad. Two words, pretty awesome. I think about popping into Hanco's every time I head for the Bergen st. stop. The shop is small, with a few seats (translation: no bathroom for you) and a friendly staff. I have only been to a few banh mi places in NY but this is the only one that I would willingly stuff one down my tummy even when I'm not hungry. Ah, the gluttony. I have tried all the variations except the chicken, vegetarian and the sardine ones, they were all thumbs up. Their spring rolls are alright, nothing to write about. Bubble tea is ok too, although I obviously prefer Ten Ren's better. So apparently Hanco's Vietnamese sandwiches are slightly overpriced but I'm ok with it. Why? Sometimes ignorance is a wonderful thing. There is beauty in not knowing. - I don't want to know what goes on in the kitchen of my favorite restaurants. - I don't want to know if she's faking it (although ladies, sometimes the snoring is a dead giveaway) - I really don't want to know how cheap a banh mi sandwich is on the West Coast or Canada. It's hard to get 2 slices of pizza or fast food for less than $6 , but for $5.50 at Hanco's you get a pretty kick-ass sandwich. Besides being cheaper than fast food the abundance of fresh veggies makes me feel like I'm eating healthier. The pork is well seasoned and never greasy, the bread is fresh and they never over do it with the mayo ( I'm not a fan of mayo drenched sandwiches). Only two shortcomings i can think of : 1. While I'm not familiar with West Coast pricing I do know you can get a larger and cheaper banh mi in Chinatown. Saigon Vietnamese is hard to beat for $4.25 2. Balance of meat & veggies. And usually if you buy 5, you get one free. At $5.25 per banh mi with no volume order discount, this banh mi had better contain kobe beef, foie gras and filet mignon. Alas, it did not. I had the classic with medium spicy sauce, extra butter, no veggies. The roasted ground pork made the banh mi very sweet. The vietnamese ham and pate tasted fresh. The baguette was too chewy. It was a few inches shorter than the average banh mi but it was packed with meat. It was very flavorful but I feel like Hanco's caters to a western palate. The owners of Hanco's speak my language and I'm not Vietnamese. It's Cantonese-owned and run which further detracts from the authenticity. The place is small but efficiently run. There are a few small tables. Hanco's seems to be the only banh mi shop in the hood so hopefully more will pop up soon to drive the price down. read more

About a year ago I was looking for apartments in Carroll Gardens and the broker was telling us about spots in the neighborhood. I had been to the neighborhood for years, but had never noticed Hanco's just off the very busy Smith St by the F/G Bergen subway stop. The broker claimed Hanco's had the best sandwich he had ever eaten in his life. At the time I shrugged it off, but found myself in the area a couple weeks later and decided to give it the test. After all, how good can a sandwich possibly be? I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich and it was absolutely amazing. Not just amazing, but amazing. As in, amazing. Since that moment every time I think about Hanco's I immediately begin salivating like a rabid dog. Ok, that's probably a bad metaphor. I've since tried all of the other sandwiches on the menu as well as several of the appetizers. I highly recommend the spring rolls. The mango bubble tea is very good as well.
