They finally got bowls and metal sporks. I've been here ever since they had disposable bowls and utensils. They're amazing. I didn't know congee could have avocado in them and how much it'd increase how good congee already are. They also got cute gifts you can get your besties. I already got some items as stocking stuffers.

Pork Banh Mi

Okay I ordered for delivery years ago when they first opened and I can't remember my initial thought, but decided to come here recently since it was nearby. Got the following: Pork Banh Mi - okay this tasted more like a veggie banh mi and even though it wasn't veggie, it just tasted like a healthy sandwich rather than a traditional banh mi. Pork Congee - I wasn't into because they have big chunks of ginger and this is coming from a person who LOOOOOOOVES ginger. It would have been better to have it finely grated, rather than chomping on a big chunk of ginger. Hard to chew and just wasn't good pairing. I actually like the breakfast congee that had cheese and egg with the pork. This had a better flavour profile.

the only chicken on this "chicken" bahn mi, is the very tiny clump in the center. WTF.

Y'all have to do better than a TINY $14 bahn mi. The first one I had, pork, had thyme stems in in and some pieces of plastic. This second one, chicken, was made with a baguette that is so chewy that the interior ridiculously TINY amount of shredded chicken popped out; seriously less than 2oz. I have worked in kitchens for 30+ years, and this is a ripoff. The bread is wrong. It's French bread, but not a baguette for a bahn mi. So if you want a carrot and chive sandwich with a chicken stain for $14 this is your spot. In this pic, I have not removed any chicken. It's that tiny brown clump in the center of this half. I hope you get it right.

Incredible gem in the heart of Bedstuy. I had heard of this congee spot and as a congee lover I had to check it out. Upon walking in there are popular Asian grocery items available on the shelves, including noodles, spices and snacks. I went with the classic Chicken congee and also a green milk tea boba as they ran out of taro. Normally I would mark down for not having an item available but the Chicken congee smacked so much it felt wrong to give this spot less than 5 stars. The boba was great, she asked me how sweet I wanted it which I appreciated. They have oat milk available for $1 additional. The Chicken congee was filling, delicious and hearty and it was a great portion. I had to-go my order as it was a large serving. The service was friendly and quick and the ambiance was clean and chill. Additionally they had a corner shelf filled with books in case you wanted to read while dining. There is limited seating outside. Overall, great spot with delicious and affordable food. Would highly recommend!

A delightful hole in the wall with great coffee and deliciously legit congee. Super affordable with quick friendly service

A ceramic plate contains a partially eaten spring roll with visible green herbs and filling, placed on white parchment paper. A red chopstick wrapper with yellow Chinese characters rests on the plate. In the background, there is another dish wrapped in paper, a small vase with dried flowers, and part of a person's arm and clothing. The setting appears to be a casual dining environment, likely at a restaurant serving Asian cuisine.

Super cute, fun music, 10/10 food. Chicken bahn mi is so good! Their chili crisp oil is really good too

Whitefish Banh Mi Sandwich

Not the best Vietnamese coffee but it is tasty (who doesn't love condensed milk). It's more sweet than that well balanced strong flavored concoction I'm used to. The coffee is kept hot so fyi when getting iced coffee to shake well so the ice doesn't water it down. Got a whitefish banh mi for take out. Once I finally made it home exhausted from my walk I ravenously ate one half of the decent sized sammie. But all the while I was thinking, "this is a delicious smoked fish but I do wish it had something. Hmm was there supposed to be heat in this sando?" Lo and behold there was a "spicy" indicator on the menu and it was spelled out but maybe forgotten. I definitely didn't taste any mayo, for that I'm very glad. But sadly seems that that was suppose to provide the heat. Overall I wanted congee but I was a bit weary to try it due to the reviews/images but that's never stopped me from exploring new takes on food. Seeing as everything was tasty it's next on my list.

Vegetarian congee and Vietnamese Iced Coffee - A bowl of vegetarian congee containing mixed vegetables and toppings is positioned on a table near a large window, with a view of city buildings in the background. Next to the congee, there is a clear plastic cup filled with iced Vietnamese coffee, featuring ice cubes and a creamy, coffee-colored liquid. The setting appears to be indoors, possibly in a cafe, with chairs and a table visible in the background.

Funky outpost in the heart of Bed-Stuy that satisfied the congee craving I didn't know I had. My prior experiences with Congee have all been at Hongkongnese breakfast cafes on gray winter days when one has an inexplicable craving for the Chinese equivalent of chicken noodle soup for the soul. But those varieties have always required a generous dash of soy sauce and chili paste to yield sufficient flavor. Here, a less conventional heaping of onions and chickpeas makes this taste more like a starchy counterpart to sweetgreen. Most of all, love the Vietnamese coffee with a healthy portion of condensed milk!

Braised Chicken Congee Bowl - A paper bowl filled with congee, an Asian rice porridge, is shown on a stone table outdoors. The bowl contains shredded purple cabbage, kimchi, fried shallots, and chopped lettuce, with a white plastic spoon inserted. The setting appears to be outside, with a person's hand visible in the background and sunlight casting shadows.

I stopped by Maya's on a whim. I've never had congee and the menu looked intriguing. After mentally preparing myself by previewing the menu at home so I'd know what I wanted to order, I walked in and looked at the menu and what a surprise, I had no idea what I wanted. Luckily, the people working there were kind and patient. I ended up getting the congee chicken bowl (11) and added the kimchi (+2) to it. Having grown up on porridge, texture-wise it was not at all what I expected. However the texture was neither offensive or off putting and even though I didn't expect it (it more like brothy quinoa rather than porridge) I still enjoyed it. The chicken tasted like it had been stewing for a few days. It was so tender and well seasoned through and through. I was not expecting too much from the kimchi since it's vegan and I've had vegan kimchi that's left a lot to be desired. Not this one! This is not the typical cabbage only kimchi. I believe there was daikon in there and it tasted just like regular old kimchi so it fully satisfied that part of my that was craving something perfectly pickled. All in all, the experience here was pretty good from customer service to delicious food. I look forward to my next visit!

Breakfast congee - A close-up image of a bowl of congee, an Asian rice porridge, topped with shredded meat, crispy fried onions, and some vegetables. The congee appears creamy with visible grains and toppings, served in a disposable bowl, likely at a restaurant or cafe.

I ordered the breakfast congee for delivery because I've been craving it for weeks and I dont recommend it. Everything came mixed together and toppings were soggy which was unappetizing. The congee itself without the toppings is in my opinion tasteless and too watery for my liking. Love that they added quinoa and innovative toppings like the cheese tho - that was new and these toppings are essential to help give the congee flavor. Overall I found the presentation (dont order delivery!), flavor profile and texture of the breakfast congee disappointing but this is my personal opinion after trying all the Chinatown congees which were cheaper and more flavorful. Give it a try though, maybe you'll like it.

Mine was avocado with extra avocado Hers was something with meat Both were tasty

It's an Asian grocery store. No, it's a cafe. Wait, I was wrong, it's a restaurant featuring Congee. ... Which is it? A, B, or C? D, all of the above, delicious; with helpful, friendly service!

Linda M.

We were curious of how the congee tasted like so we decided to give it a try. It was very different than the traditional congee that I am used too but it is still good. We got the chicken and pork congee. Just wish that there was indoor dining but I guess the outdoor tables worked as well.

Ask the Community - Maya Congee Cafe

Do you have gluten free options?

Hi! Yes our congee bowls are gluten free. The only topping that has gluten is the chicken which has some soy sauce in it. Thanks!

Do you have indoor seating available?

Hi! We only have outdoor seats in our outdoor structure. Thanks!

It says online you are open at 9am but on the menus you mentioned 11:30. Are you open at 9?

Hi! Yes we are open at 9am daily. Thanks!

The listing says open until 6pm but any time I try to go around 530 after work to pick up from the grocery section the door is locked. Sometimes the employees open up and sometimes they just wave me away. What are the hours for the grocery section?

Our kitchen does close at 530pm but definitely let us know if you just need groceries! Thanks and sorry for the misunderstanding!

Do you offer your breakfast congees for dinnertime? (around 5-6pm)

We can usually make it when you come into the cafe.

Got brunch here on a Sunday with a friend. We split the Hot Honey Gem Salad and Hottokeki (Japanese…read moresoufflé pancake). The pancake is gigantic and is absolutely meant to be shared. It was really fluffy and smelled soooo good (reminiscent of the HK street cart waffles). But because it's so big, by the time we ate half of it, we were getting a little tired of the same taste. The salad was good but nothing to rave about. For drinks, we tried the Lebowski-San and Kettl Hojicha Kombucha. It was my first time trying a clarified cocktail and it was really unique. I thought there would be more ice cream honestly but I still loved it. The kombucha though was shockingly tasty. I loved it so much that I bought a bottle online once I got home (they're from Kettl, a local distillery in Brooklyn). The venue is really spacious and I actually planned a wedding here in the past. They host a lot of events and there was even a birthday party happening when I ate there. The only downside is the location. The only train that goes there is the G so it's a bit hard to get to. Food: Hot Honey Gem Salad (radish, buckwheat, fennel, yuzu vinaigrette) 9/10 Hottokeki / Japanese Soufflé Pancake (fluffy hotcake, honey maple butter, sesame) 9/10 Add Mini White Sesame Soft Serve (soy milk, sesame oil) 10/10 - I would recommend just getting this on its own instead of the Hottokeki if you're craving just a little dessert. Drinks: Lebowski-San (green tea shochu, pisco, sakura leaf, clarified matcha ice cream, cold brew coffee floater) 9/10 - This is a clarified cocktail which I didn't expect. I thought I was ordering a matcha ice cream-like drink so although the drink was good, all the ingredients are very subtle in flavor. Kettl x Unified Ferments 'Hojicha' Kombucha (jou yanagi hojicha) 10/10 - This is an absolute must-try!

Really popular space that speaks for itself. I also went on a special occasion and they prepared a nice note congratulating me on my special day. I still think about it sometimes and even created something similar when I host events! They also have a lot of fun cocktails that make this place a great place to gather with friends.

Service was really friendly, and although it is a small area behind the counter and it was busy, drinks came out relatively quickly. The Blackberry Pie Matcha was honestly incredible. I'm typically someone who gravitates towards seasonal/fun drinks, so this is right up my alley. I don't know how they did it, but they really captured the pie flavor in this drink. It was almost buttery and custard-y and paired super nicely with the matcha and fruitiness of the blackberry. Everyone in the Transmitter Park had a cup, so I need to try their coffee as well.

My dining partner went for what I believe was the Sicilian Shakshuka -- tomato and vegetable stew, olives, bread, and eggs. The pancakes were solid: just the right amount of maple syrup. They were a little on the dry side, but still tasty, helped along by what seemed like Nutella or another chocolate-hazelnut sauce. Not mind-blowing, but satisfying and definitely hit the spot.
