So flavorful and comforting, with the nice crunch from the pickled veggies and toppings, plus the soft boiled egg for more substance. The congee itself was quite pleasant in texture. Wow! What an interesting bite and very different/modern version of congee. Maya Cafe makes their own version of congee with a lot of various grains and toppings, which all blended perfectly together. Not the best Vietnamese coffee but it is tasty (who doesn't love condensed milk). It's more sweet than that well balanced strong flavored concoction I'm used to. The coffee is kept hot so fyi when getting iced coffee to shake well so the ice doesn't water it down. Got a whitefish banh mi for take out. Once I finally made it home exhausted from my walk I ravenously ate one half of the decent sized sammie. But all the while I was thinking, "this is a delicious smoked fish but I do wish it had something. Hmm was there supposed to be heat in this sando?" Lo and behold there was a "spicy" indicator on the menu and it was spelled out but maybe forgotten. I definitely didn't taste any mayo, for that I'm very glad. Ordered online for 10:10 AM pickup. I got there around 10:20 and the order wasn't ready and they were missing 2 of the 3 toppings I ordered. I asked to cancel & refund (admittedly not very nicely), but I've been sick for days and this was the first time I literally dragged myself out of the house hoping to have some congee with the more traditional toppings (I'm Chinese, so I don't like the less traditional toppings). So I was super-frustrated that 1) the order wasn't ready 2) I wasn't notified they were out of toppings before I got there 3) they were already out of toppings when they had just opened. Incredible gem in the heart of Bedstuy. I had heard of this congee spot and as a congee lover I had to check it out. Upon walking in there are popular Asian grocery items available on the shelves, including noodles, spices and snacks. I went with the classic Chicken congee and also a green milk tea boba as they ran out of taro. Normally I would mark down for not having an item available but the Chicken congee smacked so much it felt wrong to give this spot less than 5 stars. The boba was great, she asked me how sweet I wanted it which I appreciated. They have oat milk available for $1 additional. The Chicken congee was filling, delicious and hearty and it was a great portion. I had to-go my order as it was a large serving. The service was friendly and quick and the ambiance was clean and chill. Additionally they had a corner shelf filled with books in case you wanted to read while dining. Y'all have to do better than a TINY $14 bahn mi. The first one I had, pork, had thyme stems in in and some pieces of plastic. This second one, chicken, was made with a baguette that is so chewy that the interior ridiculously TINY amount of shredded chicken popped out; seriously less than 2oz. I have worked in kitchens for 30+ years, and this is a ripoff. The bread is wrong. It's French bread, but not a baguette for a bahn mi. I stopped by Maya's on a whim. I've never had congee and the menu looked intriguing. After mentally preparing myself by previewing the menu at home so I'd know what I wanted to order, I walked in and looked at the menu and what a surprise, I had no idea what I wanted. Luckily, the people working there were kind and patient. I ended up getting the congee chicken bowl (11) and added the kimchi (+2) to it. Having grown up on porridge, texture-wise it was not at all what I expected. However the texture was neither offensive or off putting and even though I didn't expect it (it more like brothy quinoa rather than porridge) I still enjoyed it. The chicken tasted like it had been stewing for a few days. It was so tender and well seasoned through and through. I was not expecting too much from the kimchi since it's vegan and I've had vegan kimchi that's left a lot to be desired. Not this one! This is not the typical cabbage only kimchi. I believe there was daikon in there and it tasted just like regular old kimchi so it fully satisfied that part of my that was craving something perfectly pickled. Been gettin the chicken congee once every two week for breakfast/lunch while I work from home. It's a more modern American twist on congee but still with the home flavors my parents used to have. I personally felt I wanted more congee, less chicken and more broccoli, but Im just weird like that. Portion wise it really fills me up for the rest of the day for 11 dollars. But then again I don't really over eat. I really enjoyed it overall and great for breakfast or lunch when you are around the area. I have also tried their sesame boba. Its pretty good! We got the pork congee and the pork ducking congee. There was not enough congee for all the toppings and everything was so sour. The flavors just did not go together at all. Matcha lemonade just tasted like lemonade and was not a bright green, which means they don't use high quality matcha. We were warned they would be sweet so we asked for half sugar in both, but both were still so unbearably sweet. This is not how real boba drinks are made, and we were pretty disappointed. They're selling asian grocery staples now, which is a blessing since there aren't many places like this in the neighborhood. Also delivering food on Caviar! The vegan and vegetarian congees are my favorite, but my husband usually gets the pork one, or the breakfast one and says they're amazing. Each bowl has a perfect combo of spice, crunch and flavor. After a long morning of traveling, we were craving something warm and comforting, and Maya Congee cafe just so happened to be near our airbnb! They had an interesting variety of congees and banhmi to choose from. We got the chicken congee and the gone fishin' congee. They were both presented so beautifully and colored with amazing ingredients. We were curious about the gone fishin' congee since it seemed very different but it did not disappoint! If the idea of a Raw unseasoned broccoli sandwich appeals to you, by all means ignore this review. Also if you congee for what it is I would avoid this place at all costs. The congee portion is not good for a congee bowl, and it's not even a basic rice porridge it has quinoa, and if you are expecting a nice congee, it doesn't feel good. It's all wrong, you have to fight to get the little bit of porridge substance from under a plethora of raw broccoli and carrot bits ( why all this broccoli) and fight off crunchy onions and pickled items for a few measly bites of underwhelming sludge. Some kind of "healthy" spin on congee and it's so nasty and disappointing to eat. The ingredient load on top doesn't mesh well together and certainly doesn't balance with the quinoa porridge. Congee was a staple in my childhood and triggers so many nostalgic memories for me so I wanted to love this place soooo badly but the food here was disappointing. We ordered the porkduckin congee bowl and lemongrass chicken soup. Half the reason why I got the porkduckin congee bowl was for the preserved duck egg but sadly I couldn't find it anywhere in my bowl :'( the kimchi tasted off (?too sour) and the congee was made with quinoa which I've never experienced and was not a fan of. The lemongrass soup had a very strong flavors, much spicer and pungent than I expected. Dumplings were ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It did make me feel all warm and cozy inside on a cold winter day. This is my fave lil cafe in Bed-Stuy. The spicy congee is actually spicy (read: they use sambal). But the prana chai is the showstopper. It's the best masala chai that I have had in a non-Desi space.
