I don't have much experience with Senegalese food but after trying the Thiebou Yapp here, I'm very much a fun. Super traditional vibe which adds to the homecooked comfort style of the food. The portion sizes were incredible for the price and the lamb was cooked to perfection. My partner and I visited Le Baobab Gouygi 2 today for a late Sunday lunch, per a friend's recommendation. It's a casual spot where you seat yourself and order at the counter. We started with a bag of small, cornbread-like buns that were slightly sweet and so delicious--perfect for snacking before the main dishes arrived. We also ordered two homemade drinks: the Senegal ginger drink, which had a bold kick to it, and the bouye drink, made from baobab fruit, which was creamy, slightly tangy, and refreshing. We'd never tasted anything like these. Both were unique and complemented the flavors of the food, which came out quickly. For our main dishes, we tried the Chicken Yassa, a traditional Senegalese dish of marinated chicken cooked with caramelized onions, lemon, and mustard. It had a wonderful tangy flavor with tender, flavorful chicken that literally fell off the bone. We also had the Thiebou Djen, the national dish of Senegal, which is a savory, tomato-based fish and rice dish cooked with vegetables like carrots, cabbage, and cassava. I opted for red jollof over yellow and loved the crispy parts. This dish was rich, hearty, and packed with flavor. We wanted to try the Fataya (fried fish or meat turnovers) but unfortunately, they were out. Despite that, we had more than enough food; we left feeling stuffed and still took home a large to-go container. The food came out quickly, and the staff was prompt with bringing water to the table. Hole in the wall spot packed with flavor: not the coziest spot to eat in so I got takeout but they have some hits. I was excited to try this Senegalese Restaurant because I had some when I lived in Philly which was slappppin'. But this was definitely disappointing. The fish was underwhelming and seasoning was MIA. It was a bit over cooked as well. Won't get that again. The Jollof needed more flavor as well. I tried to spruce it up with the onions and sauces provided but it didn't help much. The people here were cool though. No issues there. read more

So much food with a great value!!! In an area with so few non fast food options, this place is a great delight. The ambiance is pretty bare bones but the restaurant makes up for it with its food. I ordered the grilled fish and I was pleasantly that it was an entire fish, rather than a filet. The dish, which was 15 bucks came with one side, I elected for a salad. The service was pretty friendly and fast. The only issue that I had with the place is that there is no heat in the restaurant and it was a cold day, so I had to eat with my jacket on. I recently saw this place pop up on Fulton street and had flashbacks to my trip to Senegal the year prior. I finally stopped in and after this first meal, I know that I'll be back often. I did the thiebou yapp and it was amazing! The setting is a more traditional family kitchen style. It reminded me of visiting various homes in Senegal for meals where you just pay person who cooked and enjoy. The service was relatively quick and mildly nonchalant. We were taken care of by a teenage girl who answered a couple of meal preparation questions for us. The menu varies by day as many of the main dishes take quite awhile to prepare so it's understandable that they all can not and really should not be prepared each day. The jollof was superb. The onion confit was perfection. I'd honestly like to put that on every protein heavy dish I have from now on. Now that I'm writing this review, I feel like I will be back within the next week for another meal. Definitely, check this place out for a good taste of west African cuisine. read more

I decided to pick-up food on a rainy day last week. I wanted to taste the Thiebon Djeun but they didn't have any do I opted for the fried fish and sweet plantains. The fish could have had a bit more seasoning but the onions and mustard complimented it will enough that I could look past the light seasoning. We stopped by for lunch and had two of the Saturday specials: thiebou djeun (fish with eggplant and jollof rice) and lamb maffe (lamb cooked in peanut sauce). Both were extremely flavorful. I went here on a Friday night with a group of 6 and they were very accommodating. There was a nice ambiance and they had some great afrobeats playing in the background. Loud enough for you to hear and sing along with, but low enough for you to maintain comfortable conversation. They were out of a few entrees, but we did come around 10:30pm so it was understandable. We we're amazed that we found this place because it closed around 2am and we wouldn't be rushed out. When it came to the food, everyone absolutely loved their meals. We all got different things and the portion sizes were huge. 4 out of 6 of us had to get a take home bag because there was no way we finishing all of it there. My grilled fish was seasoned very well; I was worried about the white rice being bland but the cooked onions that came with the meal mixed in quite. To top off the experience Aicha, the person who took our order and brought out our food was lovely. She was very patient and helpful in deciding what we should try. I was excited to see there's a Le Baobab in Brooklyn as I'm a frequent customer at the Harlem location. I'm highly disappointed in the management and customer service, it just took them 2hrs to deliver my food, my kids were supposed to be in bed an hour ago and I'm literally 7 blocks away. When I first called it seemed like the lady didn't know how to take the order and literally took my number and told me she'll call me back. 15mns later I CALL BACK, placed the order fine. 30mns later received a call from the delivery guy, he said: " I just got to the restaurant, I will eat then deliver your food, give me 10mns", fine. I received my food 1hr15mns later. Food is good, but African and Caribbean restaurant really need to do better towards their customers. read more

Compared to other Senegalese in NYC, this is one of the best. Compared to other restaurants in the areas, this is one of the best !!! Highly recommended. It's all good, but get the juice--they're fresh and made in house. I recommend any of the stews and the fish. If you don't like spicy, flavorful, etc this place isn't for you. The food service is very inconsistent here. I used to order my favorite dish, cow foot soup, then they started telling me that I had to come in later when that was not always the case. I then looked at their daily specials listed on each table, and when I placed the order, the waitress told me that they were not serving it. Finally, I returned right at the time they told me they served cow foot soup. She told me they were not serving it today, sorry. I simply left vowing never to return to Le Baobab Gouygui. read more
