I must confess I have never tried anything off of their regular menu because I always get tempted by their Daily Specials. If I had to describe Hamada General Store in one word it would be Nostalgic. Their dishes remind me of restaurants past and old school Hawaii food. I really like when they do specials that are an homage to restaurants no longer around like Flamingos or Aiea Heights Drive In. And talk about nostalgia, they have Green River! The only wish I have is that they post their daily special menu on IG the evening before instead of the morning of. I think if they posted it earlier, that would help me decide if I want to order lunch from there the next day. Parking has always been available. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Mostly do take out but there are seats/tables inside. If you dine in, your food will still be served in a take out container.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Great place in DT Honolulu!! Huuuuuge generous portions, each plate is roughly $17-$25. They have drinks too. Nice staff, simple interior. Seems most people get it to go. I couldn't even make a dent in my food, that's how much there was!! Crazy. Good time.

I finally stopped by Hamada General Store. My excitement to finally try this place was matched with an awesome brunch. The order: Ahi Cakes with Dynamite & Kabayaki Sauce on the side and Furikake Rice, Potato Mac, and Pickeled Veg Talk about being smacked in the face with flavor. The ahi tofu patties already packed a bunch of flavor and a nice ginger kick. Then take a bite with the green onions and rice crackers for a fresh zing and crunch. Then taking a bite in the dip of their dynamite (spicy aioli) and kabayaki (Teri style) made for that sweet, tangy, Lucious bite with a slight heat kick. Their potato Mac just zipped up to my top of the list Mac salads. It's soft, creamy, and oh so great. We were greeted with smile and friendly staff. Food came out in a jippy and delivered to our table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is a small rustic and homey designed seating area with a TV.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We will define it be back as there is a lot more on their menu I want to try. Excited for my next stop here.

Saw the reviews by our fellow Yelper's. We were fortunate enough to get there before closing time. Service was great, nice size dining room. We tried the HGS burger and the Teriyaki bowl with Ebi. The burgers were prepared perfectly. Nice char on the outside juicy inside. Accompanied with Bacon, Cheese, Lettuce, Crispy Pickles, and a wonderful Aioli sauce. It was one of the most delicious and satisfying burgers I've ever had. Accompanied by crinkle cut fries which were hot and delicious. The Teriyaki bowl has Teriyaki Beef and Deep Fried Ebi over rice. The Teriyaki was tender and delicious. The Ebi was crispy outside moist and tender inside. The rice was cooked perfectly . Next time we'll try to get there earlier so we can try some of their Daily Specials. Highly recommended .

When the rain was pouring down on us through the storm, we ran over to Hamada General Store for some lunch. Everyone recommended to come here so it was on my bucket list. Don't let the storefront fool you. I thought this was a store. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's a lot of seating inside and their kitchen is an open-concept so you can see everyone working together to prep the food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It helps to call ahead since they become real busy during lunch hour. [[HIGHLIGHT]]But if you have the time to sit, I highly recommend to enjoy the meal there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have their regular menu and their daily specials menu. We ordered off the specials menu (mid March), the blue cheese steak and miso salmon. I'm so glad I came that day since I'm a huge fan of blue cheese and this combination was the BEST. The steak sat on a nice bed of mixed potatoes that I really enjoyed. The miso salmon was cooked perfectly, not dry at all. The shrimp tempura was crispy as well. Also did I mention, they don't charge tax. They update their daily specials and you can find them on their Instagram page. If you're around the area, check them out. I'm definitely going to return.

It was breakfast time and I was craving loco moco. I have yet to find a stellar loco moco on this island that has knocked my socks off. One of the most important criteria to me is that the gravy must be dark and flavorful and the patty must be fresh and moist, not hard or chewy. I did a search on my Yelp app and came across a photo of Hamada's loco moco with super dark gravy. That was all I needed to see! I jumped in my car and headed down there. They're located in Kaka'ako off of Ward & Queen St. They have free parking in front of their restaurant, which is a bonus! As I entered, I was surprised how large the interior was. I was expecting a little hole in the wall. I was also surprised how empty the restaurant was. There was only one table occupied at 10am. I didn't really look at the menu because I knew I wanted the loco moco. The description read: Smash Burger Patty, Two Waialua Farm Fresh Eggs, Homestyle Brown Gravy & White Rice for $21. I ordered it with my eggs sunny. It didn't take long for my dish to arrive at my table. It was humongous and looked promising. The first bite I took, I could tell that the dark gravy was spot on and very delicious, but I wasn't a fan of the smash burger patty. It was a little on the hard side. Therefore the 4 stars instead of 5. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Employees were friendly and the restaurant was clean with the tables spaced out well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will certainly return in the near future to try some of their other menu items.

Ordered the miso salmon with eggplant and sweet potato tempura and it honestly hit all the right notes. The salmon was perfectly cooked--flaky, moist, and coated in a rich miso glaze that had that ideal balance of savory and slightly sweet without being overpowering. You can tell it was done with care. The tempura was just as impressive. Light, crispy batter with zero greasiness. The eggplant was soft and almost creamy inside, while the sweet potato added a nice natural sweetness that paired really well with the salmon. Portion size was satisfying and everything came out fresh and well-presented. Definitely one of those dishes I'd come back for.

Hamada General Store is one of those places where I check the specials menu first because it always has unique offerings. The food is tasty and served in generous portions. Some examples of specials that I would definitely get if I saw them come up again include: the HGS "famous" fried chicken bowl, kalua pig omelette, ebi sandwich, and anything with their house chili. If I do order from the regular menu, salmon katsu is my go to; and if I'm thirsty I may also go for a Vietnamese coffee, yuzu lemonade, or green river. They have a parking lot and I've never had trouble with parking because most folks pick up their food to go. Finally, service is great.

Went to Hamada general store and ordered the King crab and blue crab poke......omg.....soooo good. Sorry i forgot to take a picture and it was almost gone when I remembered. It was spicy with big chunks of crab....It was sooooi delicious. I want more please. The service was friendly and the food came out fast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice place to eat, lots of tables but I took it to go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will be back.....hope they have crab poke again.

I will say this - I wanted to like this more than I did. I'd heard good things about Hamada General Store for months and just never got around to visit. The staff were friendly. The food was maybe 3/5. I ordered the fish n chips n dip. The tsuyu dipping sauce was a nice twist and a welcome sweetness to the dish. It was a large piece of fish as well. But it was just good, nothing over the top. I liked that the fries came with the meal, you didn't have to worry about adding a side. My friend had the salmon katsu and finished it all. I thought it was a bit fishy, but that's also how salmon is. I wanted to try the yuzu lemonade, but talked myself out of it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are about maybe 8 tables or so to sit at, and a clean bathroom.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I appreciate that there's dedicated parking spots out front, a rarity at most places in Kakaako. Was it good? Yes, good enough. Will I be chomping at the bit to go back? Not yet.

    Must be allergic to something

Food tasted great, but it my feet swell up like a blowfish. Must have been something in those special ingredients, ono though.

My brother found this place on Yelp and, after checking it out online a bit, it looked good for a try. [[HIGHLIGHT]]At first glance, it gave me the impression of a small Hawaiian country style diner which served a variety of comfort foods.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Not being familiar with the place, it wasn't too busy so we went up to the ordering counter to check out the menu.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For first timers, it may be difficult to choose what to order as everything sounded so good! But that's a good problem to have.....well, so we thought. gazing at the menu for a minute or so, the young girl watching us and ready to take our orders just came out and said to us...."We are closing soon"......meaning, you want us to hurry up and order now? Closing soon? It's 1pm and the sign at the door says this place closes at 2pm....I think we had plenty of time. She wasn't very helpful and kept repeating the wrong thing when we placed our order, so we weren't to happy about this. Anyway, we later interacted with the other lady here, who seemed much nicer, so that helped to calm our nerves a bit. Anyway, I ordered something I was more familiar with and liked very much.....a tuna melt on rye with fries....which I believe was a lunch special not on the menu. We also ordered the Salmon Katsu .....which was panko breaded fresh atlantic salmon, with various custom sauces, and a side if rice and potato mac salad. The food was actually tasted very good.....was made with very fresh ingredients, and was very comforting. We all enjoyed everything we ordered. Other than that not too pleasant start to this dining experience, we all actually enjoyed our food dining experience here. And, I'm not sure what that girl at the counter was talking about them "closing soon" as several other groups of people came through the doorsafter us.....who looked like locals working at nearby offices, and there was definitely no rush to get them out.

Tucked away on a side street off of Queen, the Hamada General Store is a great lunch option for locals. You wont see any tourists at this venue, and the traffic is steady. We had to wait for a set as this was was so busy. Ordered the Aloha Plate which was a combination of poke, kailua pork, mac salad, rice. the portion was large and the price was $20. Super fresh and delicious. They have several tables for in store seating and there is a restroom in the venue. Plenty of free parking outside on Queen street. We will be back to try out the other options soon!

Ask the Community - Hamada General Store

    Do they have indoor seating?

Yes, there are a few 4 seat tables inside.

Do they ever serve Saimin like at Home Bar and Grill?

If I just wanted to just pick up food, am I allowed to bring my 2 small dogs (not service animals) in with me? (I am likely to stop by during my walk with them)

If you carry them or they are in a bag you should be ok. I had no problem doing this. It's common courtesy to not walk them in on a leash though.

Do u have tables for seating? Or r u still just doing takeout?

    They have tables for seating

    Still just take out?

Yes, currently we only offer Take-Out. We highly recommend placing an order via phone (808-379-1992) to help expedite your order. Last phone order accepted will be 1:30 as our business hours are Mon-Sat, 9am-2pm, Closed Sunday.

Do they take orders over the phone?

It's better to place phone orders if you are interested in one of their popular specials of the day, you can place your order to be picked up at a later time.

Do they start serving the lunch items after a certain time or is it all day?

Entire menu served from 7-2. While supplies last on their specials.

And boy were we both blown away (so much so that I believe she returned the next day with others!). The menu had been completely revamped and seemed to take on a more local influence while still being very upscale. Since we both enjoy "sampling" we shared two appetizer and a main. Everything was bursting with flavor! This is what we had: Starter salad from the seasonal menu of watermelon, strawberries, blueberries and greens served on a bed of yuzu infused goat cheese and drizzled with a shiso chimmichuri sauce. Yes, bursting with flavor! I would return for just this dish! Next shared was a tempura battered cauliflower served with a robust curry and yogurt reduction. Deeeelicious. I wouldn't say we licked the plate... but I won't deny it. Hahah. Finally shared the seafood in curry soup (think a lighter version of laksa) served with white rice on the side. Holy moly. No words to describe. Portions were generous enough to share still next time, I won't. That memorable you won't want to share. No longer serving volcano black rolls, tho absolutely serving amazingly wonderful dishes. Volcano black pancakes still available at breakfast. We kept on oooing and ahhhing and asking about the chef. Our servers Gale and Lily, who provided the most awesome service told us "Chef Lance" (as he is affectionately called) moved over from the Mariposa (Restaurant in Neiman Marcus) over a year ago. Further research revealed Chef Lance Kosaka has brought experience from noteworthy restaurants: Top of Waikiki, Merriman's, 53 By the Sea, and most recently Mariposa. I am hoping he will bring in a notable creme brulee that I loved at both the Top as well as Mariposa! Not wanting the deliciousness of Chef Steve's cooking to end, I also ordered a warabi salad to go for the next day. It was...just as wonderful as the other dishes we enjoyed. Thank you to Servers Gale and Lily, Chef Steve, actually...the entire staff who elevated a casual evening of dining to be a most memorable experience! Thank you to sister friend Karen who insisted we dine here, for the most wonderful company and meal. Validated parking in the building accessed on Seaside. Validated for either 2 or 3 hours depending on the promotion. Kamaaina discount of 10 percent given. Will we be back? Absolutely. And I won't wait so long this time to return!
