    Less meat for spartan plate
    Sherene H.

I love doner shack! I'm so sad the amount of meat has decreased by about 30% for the spartan plate. My boyfriend got the pita plate and it was about 20% less. The price is the same and the taste by it is expensive now. Their delicious yogurt sauce is also $1 for one extra container. Their service is friendly and parking is free in Samsung plaza if you get out quickly to just pick up. Overall, just disappointed in the noticeable decrease in meat and increase of salad / rice to replace it.

I've seen this place a few times as I patronize another establishment in that area. I decided on getting the Mr a lamb wrap as loves lamb and Mediterranean food. There was only one other customer reading inside. The music was blaring and for some reason they increased the volume on a song that had cuss words in it. I was extremely shocked because I thought they would've turned it down instead. The other customer looked at me and I did make a comment about the song. It was turned off immediately. But still, why would you have that in a restaurant? That already gave me bad vibes about the food. I brought the wrap home excited to see the expression on my mister's face. He was extremely disappointed. He said whoever wrapped it wrapped it horribly as it was falling apart and super soggy. He only ate half of it. The flavor was not on par either. I didn't even take a picture of it because it was so horrible looking it looked like vomit and not picture worthy. It would be different if the taste was there and it just didn't look good. But sadly this was not the case. This was a no go for us.

Delicious. Reasonably priced. Quick, friendly service. Couldn't ask for more. My go-to order is the Big Turk Combo Plate, which is a little bit of EVERYTHING. Choice of chicken shawarma, lamb doner, or half-half, half a pita and cup of hummus, rice, side salad with feta and balsamic, and 2 falafel balls. Meat and falafel are perfectly seasoned, tastier than a lot of other Greek/Mediterranean/Turkish/Israeli/Palestinian spots in Honolulu. The hummus, on the other hand, is a little lacking in flavor; still good though. I usually order for delivery or have someone else bring me takeout. I did go in myself to pick up takeout once. Bright, clean interior with friendly staff. A few counter seats if you want to dine in, but their main jam is clearly takeout judging by the many bags of food waiting for pickup. Called in my order at 5:30pm on a Friday, was told 30min, but when I went in to pay for my order it was already ready just 12 minutes later! Highly recommend.

Big Turk combo plate $18 was a good deal. With generous lamb, rice , pita bread and other seasonings. The shop closes at 9, we ordered around 8:07, and the food still came out pretty fresh. Parking is free for 20 mins at Samsung Plaza. Call ahead would be a good strategy.

Doner Shack is the spot to be for lunch. Food is really good here. Phone order is a must , lunch time this place can be very busy. Parking kind of sucks here , its location is the Sam Song Plaza . There's very few tables inside here , take out is recommended. Very very clean inside. Must try is the lamb plate.

Doner Shack at the Samsung Plaza on Keeaumoku Street.

One cannot live on Frrrrrrried Chicken alone! Or perhaps I am wrong???? Buwahahahahaha! I remembered seeing a Doner Shack in downtown Honolulu, but I didn't know that there was another Doner Shack location across the street from the Keeaumoku Walmart. If ya know where the Samsung Plaza is, Doner Shack is one of the various eateries businesses in this little strip mall plaza. Does Doner Shack have Frrrrrrried Chicken? Of course not! But what Doner Shack does serve here is a freshly made meal, and the meats featured here are mainly roasted chicken, & lamb. They also have falafel, if you're a vegetarian. It's was my first time to Doner Shack, but my friend who suggested this place has been to a Doner Shack before. Doner Shack has a pretty simple menu, and upon looking over the menu, I decided to get a wrap, because it was the closest thing that looked like a burrito (and I was craving Mexican that day, lol), the only difference is the ingredients inside of the wrap of course is much more healthy than a Mexican burrito. Lol! I opted to get the chicken for my wrap, and it came with very fresh vegetables & some kinda yogurt sauce. My friend got the rice bowl, and the came with a mixture of chicken/lamb, veggies on a bed of yellow rice (not sure what type of rice that was). What can I say about the grub? I certainly could taste the freshness of my wrap, but I think I needed a bit more space, as my wrap tasted rather "dry". I had taken my friend's hot sauce to add more flavor to my wrap, but still something was missing (imho). If you're looking for healthy eating, Doner Shack is definitely a good option!

Tried out the new Doner Shack location on Keeaumoku Street (inside Sam Sung Plaza), and it's definitely more convenient than having to trek into downtown Honolulu. That said, parking here can be a bit of a headache--especially during lunch or dinner rush. We managed to find a spot, but we did get charged $1 even though the window sign said parking is free with validation for up to an hour. Not a huge deal, just a little confusing. As for the food--thumbs up from me! I got the rice plate with a combo of chicken and lamb, which comes with rice, meat, veggies, and sauces. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. I'd definitely order it again. My friend went with the doner wrap (chicken, veggies, and sauce) but found it a bit bland, so maybe the rice plate is the better pick here if you're looking for more flavor, or you may need to amp up the sauces ,or try the lamb! All in all, tasty food and worth a visit--even if the parking situation isn't the easiest. Looking forward to coming back!

I've been a long time fan of Doner Shack and eat here multiple times a month. Doner Shack has been a go to for me, but I've been noticing that there has been a noticeable drop in both quality and quantity over the past couple of months. Half the time the lamb is dry/overcooked with a lot of small crumb size pieces (like the meat has been sitting for a while). I mostly order the spartan lamb plate and there usually is enough meat that I almost can't finish it. But, today when I opened up my spartan plate up at home I could immediately see there wasn't as much meat as usual. The spartan plate is advertised as "Extra Meat", but my plate only had 7.5 oz (including the yogurt sauce). Is 1 to 2oz considered "Extra Meat" now? I haven't weighed my plates in the past, but if I had to guess those were about 10oz. (Note: Haven't had issues with their Downtown location, just the one on Keeaumoku) I'll probably still eat here, since it hits the spot often enough. But I can see that changing in the future if the downward trend continues.

There is ample parking and it's free for the first 30 minutes. Inside isn't the cleanest looking, and there was a small roach in the soda fountain cups area. The cashier was extremely friendly and helpful. I got a Berlin Sandwhich with yogurt sauce, cucumber, tomato, and a mix of lamb and chicken. It was incredible. The portion was huge, that it could have been split. The falafel was very good and has a great texture. It was suppose to have 5 falafel, that's what the cashier told me and I opened the box and it was only 4. Accidents happen. Overall it was very tasty.

Mediterranean food is always a hit or miss in Hawaii - I would give this place a solid 3.5, rounding up to 4 for Hawaii standards since there's slim pickings. Located in Samsung Plaza across from Kickin Cajun & Pate. Shared parking lot. First 20 minutes free. Validated for 1 hour with cashier. We couldn't find any parking when we first arrived so we had to find street parking and walk. A few open stools off to the side to sit inside. Most people do takeout. Spartan Plate ($19) had the most meat so naturally we chose to share between 2 people. The portion was generous. Overall the food was decent, but there's some room for improvement. The meat could use some more seasoning and sauce. Since there wasn't as much sauce on top, it lacked some flavor for us. No sauce on the side provided. I did appreciate that the plate wasn't super oily like other places we have been. Food came out pretty fast - it looked like most of the food was cooked, ready to be scooped onto plates. Service was polite. 3% surcharge for credit card, so bring cash if preferred.

LOCATION: Samsung Plaza on Keeaumoku PARKING: 20 min grace period or validated lot, stop at the guy when you turn in FOOD: delicious I have been waiting YEARS to try this place, but downtown never worked out for me, I knew I had to stop by when I stumbled on it. I was in such a rush I didn't notice if there were any tables to dine-in, it's mostly a takeout place, I think this spot used to be HI-blend (the acai bowl place). Service was quick, card accepted with 3% surcharge, so pay cash to avoid that. This food reminds me of Halal Guys, the original food truck in NYC. The flavors are Mediterranean and EXACTLY what I imagined it would taste like. The portion looks smaller than I remember everyone's down town location pics, but the burst of flavor makes up for it. The sauces are yummy too, can't wait to try all of them. This is going to be my newest obsession. I haven't found one in a long time, but when I do, you know I'll be back every week.

    Lamb Doner Wrap $13

This place is tucked away right off Keeaumoku down the street from Ala Moana Shopping Center and across from Sams Club. There's a small lot for parking, it's free for the first 20 minutes, and with validation from the restaurant it's a free hour. The inside is super small with seating bar style along the wall. Great for people who can't wait to eat their food. My husband ordered the Lamb Doner Wrap for $13 which was pretty hefty and heavy. They didn't skimp on the meat at all and the flavor is just so good and complimented well by the sauces inside with veggies. I ordered the Lamb Rice Plate for $14 which came with the meat shaved on to a bed of rice, a salad, and the yogurt sauce and hot sauce on the side instead of all over it. This is my go to plate here and it never disappoints. It's so much food for $14 and fills you up. One of the owners was working today and he could not have been any nicer. I always appreciate the good customer service from this place and that management/owners that interact genuinely with their customers.

Doner Shack has been a popular downtown staple for many years. I had tried that location many years ago, but hadn't been back until they recently opened this new location on Keeaumoku across from Walmart. It's an easy place to stop if you're shopping in the area. There are also places to park temporarily if you're getting to go food. It's a small spot with mostly just a counter to order food as opposed to dine in. It also gets smoky inside from the cooking meat; there aren't many places to eat food nearby either so taking it to go is recommended. The staff are nice and fast to fill orders. Family had been here and raved about it, so I recently gave it a try. I ordered the Big Turk plate ($18) so I could have a little of everything: lamb meat over yellow rice with yogurt sauce, cabbage, green salad, pita, 2x falafel, and hummus. They also gave two sauces that I loved - a genuinely hot one and a flavorful green one. I thought the quality and portions were fantastic; and the spices they used are more flavorful than other similar places. I loved the way the falafel was cooked too, smaller and crispier than dry. If you're a fan of Middle Eastern / Greek / Turkish food, this is worth the stop. They take credit now, 30% off for the remainder of 2024 if you mention the code "open" online or ordering in person.

Since chicken pho is not something I'm willing to try, we both ordered up the dac biet. The broth was bland with a thin and unpleasant veil of grease along the top that congealed quickly on the rim of the bowl. It wasn't hot enough, or maybe the pre-cooked and chilled noodle block they poured it over cooled it off. Meat was chewy and low quality. The sprouts and basil were soggy and wilted. Ordering ahead was easy and convenient, which I appreciated, and pickup was smooth. When I picked up my sandwich, my first thought was, "Wow, this is a heavy sandwich for a turkey-bacon with added avocado, no onions, and no tomato." At the time I assumed the weight meant a generous portion of turkey and bacon. Unfortunately, when I got back to work and opened it, I quickly realized that wasn't the case--it was the lettuce. There was an overwhelming amount of lettuce packed into the sandwich, to the point where it felt completely out of balance. Instead of being turkey-forward, it felt more like a lettuce sandwich with a few toppings added in. The turkey and bacon portions themselves were surprisingly small and unevenly distributed--one half had about two slices of turkey while the other had closer to a slice and a half. Most of the bacon was also concentrated on one half, so I ended up redistributing it just to make the sandwich feel a bit more balanced. The bread didn't help either. I think I shouldn't have gotten it toasted--it just didn't do it for me. It felt a little off with the filling and didn't add anything to the overall experience. I ordered The Duke, but what I didn't realize was that I was essentially getting a salad sandwich (see pic). I like lettuce on a sandwich, but this was next level--the amount completely overwhelmed everything else inside. The cost was another consideration--my total came to $19.37, including a $3.50 charge for avocado. For the portion size and balance of ingredients, I expected a bit more bang for my buck. If I give this place a second chance, I'll definitely need to say 'lite lettuce'--or maybe just 'no lettuce, please'--unless I want another salad disguised as a sandwich!

I had visited their sister location the night before in Waikīkī and had such a great experience that I told my wife, "If this place is anything like last night, we're in for something good." She agreed--and we decided to give it a shot. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by Colby, a tall, friendly guy with a great attitude. I mentioned my experience from the night before, and he immediately said he wanted to live up to that standard. That kind of response set a really positive tone. We ordered two Aroma Specials: Dolce & Banana (me) Nutella Latte (my wife) For food, we went with: P.B. Delight açaí bowl Turkey pesto panini Bacon & egg bagel Total came out to about $62, which we expected given the location near the beach. We grabbed a seat inside by the window (outside seating was full--no surprise on such a beautiful morning). Our drinks came out quickly--but unfortunately, this is where things started a little rough. We both noticed right away that something was off. My wife's Nutella latte didn't have that rich hazelnut flavor you'd expect, and my Dolce & Banana was missing the banana entirely. Honestly, they tasted almost identical. When I politely mentioned it to a staff member who brought out our food, the response felt dismissive and didn't really address the concern--which was disappointing and definitely not the experience we were hoping for. At that point, we decided to just enjoy the food and move forward--and I'm glad we did, because the food was fantastic. The turkey pesto panini was loaded with flavor, perfectly crispy on the outside, and packed with melty cheese. The bacon & egg bagel was hearty, well-balanced, and super satisfying. The P.B. Delight açaí bowl was the surprise standout--perfectly blended, fresh, and the peanut butter added an awesome richness that made it feel like a treat. Everything on the food side absolutely delivered. A few minutes later, Colby came by to check on us--and this is where the entire experience turned around. I let him know honestly: "The food is amazing, but the coffee missed the mark." Without hesitation, without attitude, and without making excuses, he said, "Hang on, let me fix that." I even told him not to worry about it--we were enjoying ourselves regardless--but he insisted. "Rick, I got you," he said. Within minutes, he came back with two freshly made drinks and a sincere apology. We took a sip and immediately--night and day difference. The Nutella latte had that rich, distinct hazelnut flavor. The Dolce & Banana finally had that smooth, balanced banana note Exactly what we were hoping for the first time. Colby is the MVP Colby completely turned this experience around. His attitude never changed--he was smiling, positive, kind, and genuinely cared about making things right. No defensiveness, no excuses--just great customer service and follow-through. That kind of service is rare, and it matters. It's evident that not all the workers have that same dedication to customer service but Colby does! What could have been a disappointing visit ended up being a great one because of him. Hawaiian Aroma Caffè--take care of this young man! He represents your business incredibly well. He needs to be leading your team on what customer service looks like and they need to follow his lead. From naming customers by their first name, to holding that perfect smile the entire time, to checking in with guests after receiving their meals and really caring about their experience. Colby naturally has it and should be showing every one how to do it as well! The Future Looks Bright for Colby and if you don't take of him, someone smart will! Final Thoughts Great food, great location, and a really cool atmosphere--but what stood out most was the service recovery. Mistakes happen anywhere. What matters is how they're handled--and Colby handled it perfectly. Because of him, we'll absolutely be back. Thank you again, Colby--keep doing your thing. You made our day. - Dr. Rick

This place looked kind of cool, and we liked that kalua pork was in the menu. There is no dining room--rather there is a collection of wooden tables under string lights. Being near the International Marketplace, there was quite a bit of bustle (even on a Tuesday night) and it was nice to sit and watch the people go by. We both ordered the pork plate. It came with rice and a salad. Unfortunately, I didn't love it. Kalua pork is usually juicy and succulent. This was dry shredded pork. The sauce was quite good though. I didn't care for the salad dressing, but hubby did. We also ordered a iced Hawaiian coffee, and that was quite good All in all, this place got us fed, but I probably would not go back. Hubby said we might, though.

Ordered a turkey sandwich, which comes with sprouts, lettuce, tomato and mayo and asked for the sprouts and tomato on the side, and was told that they're not allowed to do that. First he gave me the excuse that they don't have portion cups so I asked for them to just wrap it in paper and he refused because that's one of their founding rules. He literally told me "you can either have it in the sandwich or not at all" even though I'm paying for the ingredients. He then added on that if I wanted to pay extra for the premium add-ons ($2 for a slice of cheese), I could get THOSE on the side. To make the sandwich worth even LESS than the $10 for turkey and lettuce, I watched as he cut the bread in half and DUG OUT the insides of the bread and threw it away before putting the turkey and lettuce into what was left of a very skinny baguette shell. So much for trying to support a new business to the area. Never again!
