Best bengali / Bangladeshi food in the town. Must get kaccahi biryani and fish curry. ilish mach pilaf is delicious
Oh! So Bangali. The mixed reviews say it all. While in Bangladesh, grocery stores are modernizing with prices that make $ prices look affordable; some places in Jackson Heights are a time capsule of the past. Haat Bazaar is one example. We went for Friday lunch, right after Jummah so the place was sparsely occupied and seemed to be starting for the day. Which also meant service was almost non-existent. I had to go up to the counter to ask for the meal, in spite of being seated. But after the wait on food, the food tasted authentic and so tasty, hence the 4 star rating. Ilish pulao and kalo bhuna are a rare treat. One, I don't know how to cook either to taste this good, two apparently those are not always available so we jumped at the chance. Ilish is a difficult fish to consume, small bones aplenty. It is also perhaps every Bengali's favorite fish. The flavor was rich in mustard oil, again a staple of bengali cuisine. The flavors were on point and we loved it. We paired it with kalo bhuna, a delicacy of Chittagong. You know how burning spices is a cooking faux pax, burnt spices are legitimately the foundation of this delicious dish. It's black from over-cooking. The test of a good kalo bhuna is whether the small pieces of beef can survive hardening through the over-cooking. And, this meat was deliciously black and ironically tender. So we didn't have an issue with cleanliness and ate with our hands, so overall our experience apart from the service was pretty good. But obviously, our expectation was really low. We went in knowing it would be sub-par standards of average dining experience. Fyi- Ilish maach is so expensive and availability is on the low in BD, and here the store had massive ones being sold in a cooler box on the floor.
This is a reasonably priced Bangali food place. I went there to try Hilsa fish. It is very popular. I got only fish curry, and not fry. Curry had a good amount of fishy smell, and the fish had a ton of bones. But still the taste was good. Chicken biryani was good as well. The boiled egg in the chicken biryani, was fried after boiling. Beef fry was my favorite here. Beef was deep fried till it is charred.
When a place makes you go out of your structure of writing reviews since the usual "ambience/ service/ value" categories just wouldn't make sense, you have to pause and realize how rare the authenticity that you encounter in Haat Bazaar is. The food is so unapologetically real and unaffected by the country it is operating in as to transport you somewhere else in the space-time continuum. Somewhere very good. Somewhere delicious. Where everyone is using their fingers to lap up the bhaat (rice) with the assortment of maach jhol (fish curries) that exist in that time capsule. Where the aroma that infuses the mutton biryani wafts above the harsh existence that make the effort that goes into the dishes stand out even more. Be prepared to use your hands the way nature intended them to. Be prepared for a feast for the senses. Be ready to translocate.
The food at the restaurant is absolutely delicious, extremely consistent, and the staff makes me feel welcome every single time. I don't know what else someone could ask for. Every rice dish we ordered was 10/10 The samosas are huge and yummy. Be sure to get chai when you're finishing up Also my partner and I have never had Bangladeshi food before so we went in with no expectations. Super grateful we found this place and that we can continue to support small local businesses
Best Authentic Bengali food. I couldn't keep my mouth from watering at all the selections they offered. My husband and I wanted to try a bit of everything as we had heard so much about it from our friends and make sure we got a full experience. We decided on daal bhorta, tomato bhorta, and aloo bhorta - they were all delicious. I preferred the tomato and aloo and my husband preferred the daal and tomato. Taste buds! We settled on the goru mongsho tehari which had an amazing fragrance to it and the spice level was perfect. We also had a chicken chop each, very delicious. Then we also decided to have chicken curry and keski mach. Both were superb. The spice level was on point for every piece. The waitstaff was nice, they're busy and down to business. Then we finished off the meal with a proper cha. It had excellent liquor, good taste, and perfectly sugared. We've gone back several times, each time we're in NY, and are never disappointed. Just so people know, if you're not familiar with Bengali or South Asian style eateries, this isn't your IHOP, Friendly's, or American style restaurant like that. It's a clean place! Don't be discouraged that it's joined with a market! The food is AMAZING! Also, it's best to pay cash if you can, they do take cards but, cash is best.
The BEST HALEEM in literally all of NYC. It's food meant to warm up your desi soul. I would recommend getting the bigger size (large for $15) bc it's more than twice the size of the small ($7)
I always make sure whenever we are near to Queens area, we make an extra effort to come here... this is not a fancy restaurant or some extraordinary dish but this is something you crave, your comfort food.. I have already written a details review in the past so it would be a short review we ordered Sorshe Illis - the - 5/5gravy was too good Kochur Loti Chingri - 5/5 Baigun and Alu bharta Kachki Fish - 4/5 Rice- quantity is more than enough for one. overall satisfied with the food... again won't comment on hygiene or ambiance but there are many food tours in Queens and folks do come here for their food. read more
Solid Bengali food spot. Been coming here for a few years. The food is very affordable and easy to eat. Ordered rohu (a type of carp), goat meat stew, fried eggplant, and malaikari for dessert. Rice, salad, and daal come on the house. Really filling and generous portions. Goat pieces were bone free and not too fatty. My favorite was the rohu, which was tasty but not overpowering the flavor of the fish. The goat curry was a bit heavy and not as flavorful. The eggplant was good but served cold - wish it was warmed. Standard selection of Bangladeshi "fast food". Everything is made and in hot trays. If you want samosa, they can heat up in a microwave. They also have some small tables if you want to eat there and I saw one server but cannot comment on the service as I got everything to go and ordered at the counter. They are also attached to a small grocery store. I tried the chicken biryani and a chicken samosa. It came out to $12.52 when I paid with card. I saw a lot of people paying with cash and I wonder if they do no tax with cash. The chicken biryani was good but didn't have the heavy spices like Indian biryani does that I've come to associate with a biryani dish. The chicken samosa was BOMB! Food: Best authentic Bengali restaurant in the neighborhood. Non-Bengalis beware, the food is generally very spicy, so be cautious when ordering! Decor: Pretty clean, no complaints. Service: Service is great, but a very no frills vibe. It's generally a very busy spot, so it's good to know what you'll order in advance. read more

Good customer service. The waiter was attentive. I went around 12:30 PM, so it had less people. The bathroom is FILTHY. I tried shahi biryani with chicken and egg, it was bland and flavorless. read more

Review is solely for the biriyani's... I'm no biriyani expert but I am brown and I can say this is some of the most tasty and uniquely flavored biriyani I've EVER tasted. My Bangladeshi friend introduced me to the place and swore by the authenticity of it. Hopped off a flight at LaGuardia recently and knew I had to pick up some of the biriyani. You MUST get the kacchi biriyani (goat), the flavors are incredible. Also tried the chicken which was also delicious but you really can't miss the kacchi biriyani. It comes with this raita (yogurt sauce) which is way too spicy. If you're expecting some fancy sit down restaurant, this won't be the place for you but the biriyani is excellent. I'd want to try some of the other dishes if I was ever in this hood again. Now please go and eat some biriyani here. read more
So this is tried and true authentic Bangladeshi cuisine, the way grandma, not just momma, makes it. Been coming here for years now, and while there's been some changes over the years, the essence is still the same. It's a no frills (literally a DISH TV monitor showing bengali programs on the wall and that's it), home-cooked-feel eatery. The restaurant is split with the eatery on the left, and produce and groceries outside and to the right. Once in the restaurant area, the set up is a large buffet style where there are at least 30-35 dishes/food items to choose from. You'll see a lot of back and forth between the customers and servers, about what is what. You choose the item you want, and the server brings it to you (or makes ready for take out).The variety is enormous, which is good, but they don't have signs for the dishes, which to a non-bengali can be intimidating. But I will say, the staff is helpful and patient, so don't be intimidated. And, if you're there multiple times, you'll learn to recognize the dishes anyhow. Their items range from appetizers, to everyday dishes, to the special foods served during holidays or special occasions, only here it's on the menu every single day. They have desserts too, but I think they are made elsewhere and sold there. They are famous for their biryanis- rice dishes with meat. The biryanis are with chicken, beef, goat, lamb or plain veggie, with big beautiful hard boiled eggs laced over the tops. Curries of all meats are available of course, but their specialties have to be what bengali cuisine is centered around, fish. The last several times I've been, I counted 6 different fish dishes, along with langostine and shrimp. I would absolutely recommend you try them, however know that these are bone-in varieties and will require a keen eye and feel to get them out. Fish entrees in bengali cuisine are an art form, I mean it. There's many vegetable dishes too, namely their bhartas which are mashed up veggies in spices- take my word, they're spectacular. They have plain rice, breads- naan or parathas, that are plain or with egg or meat inside. The chicken samosa is deeee-lish! bit spicy though. And excellent with chai tea. The clientele is mostly bengali families, young people, people on the go, so you KNOW it's the real deal. Prices are reasonable and in line with the neighboring restaurants. Don't be startled by the folks eating with their hands, that's how we eat at home! It's always packed, but the service is quick. There is zero ambiance, with mostly booths for seating. But I find this adds to the food-centric vibe, and the pleasure in sharing, and stuffing our faces, with such delectable eats. read more

DISGUSTING NASTY FILTHY UNSANITARY I don't know how this place maintains to stay open. Not too long ago they'd got shut down by health because the food and place was not sanitary. I ate there once before they got shut down and I got a bad stomach. Later on I hear they're shit down. Today, o decided to give them another shot and I have a seat with 4 other friends. First thing I see is the cups, DIRTY and droppings or maybe rat drap on the cups, and nasty yellow stains. My server locked and I ask him in his language (Bengali) so he can understand what I'm going to say. I ask him "Do you even try to keep your table clean?" And he asks what's wrong, I showed him these disgusting cups (picture will be included) that are here for us and he's so fast to read pond saying while smiling "oh just throw it away, no big deal" mind you on the outside of the restaurant is posted "Grade Pending" I got up in disgust and left! I warn you DO NOT EAT THERE. This place, the staff and food is DISGUSTING & UNSANITARY. god knows how they manage to stay open. If you want Bangladeshi food this is your place. There is a generous selection of rice, meat, vegetables and fish to choose from. If you are a fish person the waitress recommended the ilish maas but I rejected it because I'm not into fish. I got the chicken korma which was good. I would pass on the kabobs and shami kabob. I thought it lacked some flavor. The biryani was great though except my boyfriend and I messed up by getting two plates. One plate was more than enough to share for two people . You'll be surprised how filled you get there so order a few things at a time and share with your partner if you have one. When you enter the restaurant, talk to one of the waitresses and they will seat you and ask what you want. Be mindful, they might start speaking to you in Bangla especially if you look brown but I didn't have any communication issues when I spoke some English. The restaurant is a little cramped inside but everything's fine once your seated and eating. I think prices were decent. They didn't give me a physical menu (I don't think they have one) so I didn't know how much the prices were of each dish. But if you look at my picture everything ended up costing me 30 which is pretty good in my opinion. read more

Being Bengali, I'm very picky when it comes to eating Bengali food at restaurants. This place lives up to expectations. Pretty decent authentic Bengali dishes. Like most Bengali restaurants this one is also joined with grocery and a meat section so there really is no decor, so don't expect to have a fancy candle light dinner. The food however is pretty good and they have a wide range of selections to choose from. My recommendations here are their Halim (a lentil stew with goat/ beef meat), Biryani (A rice dish with meat kind of like fried rice but very different flavors) and their Breakfast Paratha. They also have delicious bhortas to choose from. Also, make sure to have some "Cha" (Bengali Milk Tea) before you leave. If you're looking to try authentic Bengali Dishes, then this place should be your stop! read more

I am a regular hr...I usually get take outs from this Bangladeshi restaurant/grocery.They are usually jam packed in the weekends..and they have two sitting areas ..They serves authentic Bengali dishes..like vagi,vhorta,daal,saag ..etc...If you are Bengali you will obviously enjoy thr yummy dishes.. My favz - Kachhi Biriyani (special Bengali Biriyani) $13 Chanda mach (pomfret fishyy curry)$9-$10 Rhui mach Vorta(mashed vegetables)$5-$9 Daal vorta ( mashed lentils) Milk tea $1.75 Shingara (Bengali snacks like pakora) $1-$2 I'm a bigg fan of kachhi Biriyani..which is very hard to get in USA or Canada..so whenever I get a chance I devour this dish..they usually make it on Friday night and in weekends..so if you want to try it come erly cause they sell out fast!!!...you can get the tea all day long try ..for the food I am giving them 4****......other than the food this place is chaotic,dull, unimpressive , cramped with people and the worst part..the looks u will get from the desi people...they will stare at you for no rational reason n almost lick u with their eyes...lolzz.. so, do not plan to stay thr juss get take out..grab ur food n runn...!!:) TIPs - Come at friday night for Biriyani If u pay in cash dey don't charge taxes..!! After reading other reviews, I wanted to have the taste of their food and I think I expected lot more!! So Disappointed! I love my home made bengali food! By the way takeout option is best if you want to make yourself comfortable, otherwise be ready to get ogled by other people. Those who never tried authentic bengali food, may like the food, so enjoy! Everyone in my family keeps telling me about all the great Bangladeshi food they have in Jackson Heights but no one can name a place. What is up with that?! After countless meals at Jackson Diner, it was time to be adventurous. Given that Aarong is across the street, Haat Bazaar seemed like a good choice. And boy was I right! I had just come back from Bangladesh and tons of home cooked meals so this place was competing with my heightened and spoiled palate. I'm proud to report that it lived up to the challenge. Four different kinds of specialty biryanis on the weekend - shrimp, chicken, kachi and don't remember the last. Tons of other choices as far as fish (what what, us bengalis love our maach), veggies and bharthas. We shared the Murgh Pulao, eggplant bhartha, a fish they recommended, cha and jalebis. YUM. Oh, and the servers, as shy as they are, are incredibly polite and sweet. read more

Hat bazaar please open shop somewhere on the west coast. I promise to buy your morog polau atleast once a week. Other items we had include the chicken biryani, fish curry, chicken curry. The only disappointing part was the rajbhog. It was made of milk powder and tasted awful. The restaurant seems cheap, but you would eat so much that ur would put a dent in your pocket. read more

Cockroach found in Haleem. They don't follow food safety regulations. Food looks so dry and unhygienic. Service is horrible. Don't even think to go. read more
