When I first saw this restaurant , I thought it's the original popular brand from Bangladesh. But then found out from my friend they just used their name to open up this place. Still the restaurant has nice interior, the sitting area looks really nice. Alongside Bangladeshi dishes, they also have huge variety of sweets and confectionery goods. Been a regular since last decade so high time I wrote how I appreciate these small Bengali joints that remind me of home cooked food whenever I get nostalgic! The menu rotates based on season but there would be atleast 5-6 kinds of fish, several goat, chicken or beef dishes and then many vegetarian delicacies that is lip smacking. This is a typical diner where you could get samosa in the morning or fried fish early afternoon. There is a huge dessert section for Bengali sweet meats the place closes down like the neighborhood during Ramadan but has huge displays of fried food and other Ramadan fare! I usually always come here for some samosas and Bengali chai, which are definitely a go to favorite of mine. I had their Naan, which in comparison to the naan I've had at Kabib King (which is like a stones throw away from the restaurant), tasted hard. I prefer the softness of the Naan at Kabab King. I also ordered their chicken curry and Aloo Bhaji (potato stir fry) , which were really good though. For dessert, we ordered 'Bhapa pitha' , which is a rice cake with molasses filling. It was OK but I wish it was warmer and it definitely doesn't beat the homemade ones my mom makes that are piping hot right from the stove. One thing that I feel could use improvement is customer service. First of all, if you're sitting in, there's no menu. You have to make your choices from what you see in the buffet display at the front. Someone will take your order from there and then you proceed to finding yourselves a seat. While I'm familiar with all the food on display, I know that it definitely will be hard for someone unfamiliar with Bengali cuisine to know what they want (the staff will try their best to help). The 'waiters' that were serving us were also working at the front, handling to go orders. This made it difficult to get their attention and I had to get up from my seat when I wanted to request something. I'd never had Bengali sweets before, I knew that they have a big sweet tooth, but some of the sweets were, well, too sweet. The table we sat at wasn't clean, but not too mad about that. The women's restroom also was out of order so had to wait for the men's, but there was no toilet paper in there so had to use paper towels. As far as Bengali joints are concerned, I'm not mad at Premium Sweets. They've done a far better job than most previous reviews would have indicated (at least food wise) and the fact they are a destination for quite a number of local families makes this place A-Ok as far as I'm concerned. They should very much be a revered desserts destination. The selection goes a bit further than burfis and cashew / almond based desserts, but what I find impressive is their array of cake slices ranging from black forest to red velvet. They also serve a mean tiramisu, though I would always argue a little more booze in the batch wouldn't hurt. Traditional desserts include a number of desi donut holes, i.e. galub jamun, laddoo, rasqullah, which are as sinful as they are sweet. On the hot food front, they have a number of items that merit plenty of attention, namely the biriyani, samosas, and various curries. A few things I didn't really dig so much aren't worth much of a mention (goat and kebabs?) but the food on a whole is really not that bad. I think I'd find a few more items to enjoy if I didn't come here but once or twice a year at best. Where they can fall flat sometimes is the service. I'm not saying the folks behind the counter are slow, but they can be, especially when there is no one else around customer wise. Also, it has been a tough deal whenever I've called in to confirm if certain items are available or not, sometimes I just get hung up on after one too many inquiries. That can get frustrating and I can see the hangups people have when the wait staff isn't doing their job because they're too busy socializing. All in all, one could do far worse than Premium Sweets. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. My 80 year old grandmother went to here today. The stairs are a hazard. She saw an elderly woman struggle to get down the stairs. My grandma herself struggled herself to go up the stairs. When she finally got inside, she told the staff "there was an elderly lady who was struggling to get up the stairs, I struggled too you guys should look into your stairs." A cashier then told her "The elderly shouldn't come here." David, who introduced himself as the "owner of the restaurant" then came and told my grandma that this restaurant isn't meant for elderly people and that if she should go buy Samosas outside on the street because they're "cheaper." My grandma didn't even mention the price of the food, all she said was that the stairs were difficult to get up. I ordered a week in advance. On the day of, they told me to come by 12:30pm. You would think they'd feel lucky I arrived thirty minutes late. You would think they'd have things ready by then. But oh boy the cost of expectations! They were extra 15 minutes late. They packaged a pretty greasy dish in the most leak friendly of ways. Chicken Samosas and sweets! These Chicken Samosas that Premium Sweets sells will be the end of me. I'm dead serious. Every time I come here it's guaranteed that I chow down four of them. They are sooooo addictive. They are filling, spicy, and crispy all wrapped in a triangle shaped treat. The sweets here are equally addictive, hence the name of the restaurant. Between the Samosas and the sweets, this covers my basic needs. To be honest I not quite fond of the other stuff on the menu and thus can't recommend. We came here for tea and dessert after we had lunch at another place. They had a fair share of options, but seeing as its called Premium Sweets I thought they'd have more options - specifically Roshgolla or Rasmalai (some very traditional bengali sweets). Pick your food and the waitress will put it on a tray and you grab a table. There is a buffet-style hot food setup on the left when you enter where some the food looks familiar to me; fried fish, fried rice, mix noodles. There are many stuff that I have never seen but we are here for sweets. The food here was great, I had the dhal (lentils) and the shrimp curry and they both hit it home with flavor. The shrimp tasted fresh and was not over cooked in any way. Being born in Bangladesh, I have high expectations when it comes to BD food. PS&R falls short...way short. I came here with the my wife who like me, will eat anything. We hardly come to the JH area but since we were there, we decided to give these guys a try. It was Ramadan, so I guess they had more food than usual - funny how that works! Besides having a regular hot bar they had another open buffet style table with Iftaar food + a bunch of kebabs and biryani dishes. The food on this buffet table had no cover and who knows how long it had just been sitting out there gathering dust. However, it wasn't an actual buffet. You had to order the food by plate. The whole thing was a bit haphazard and chaotic which made me feel I was back in BD. As my luck would have it, they didn't have Kachchi Biryani so I decided to go with the Goat Biryani instead. I also saw a few things that I liked so we went all out and tried a bunch of other stuff: Goat Biryani: Not bad but poor meat to rice ratio. I was done with the meat with half the rice still on my plate. 3/5 Golda Chingri (Large Prawn in curry): The curry wasn't bad but the prawn was overcooked and rubbery. Either that or it wasn't fresh. At $15 per prawn, this was a rip off. Good thing I only got one. 2/5 Jhura Gosh: My mom makes this dish really well. It's normally made with beef that's partially shredded and has very little sauce but a lot of flavor. Theirs had mostly fatty pieces and quite a bit of oil, but tasted okay. 2.5/5 Aloo Bhaji : Sliced Potatoes lightly fried in oil & spices. This is probably one of the easiest dishes to make in BD cuisine. They did an okay job but made me appreciate how much better the aloo bhaji was at home when I was growing up. 3.5/5 After trying these dishes, we were still hungry as the portions were small. So I went back up to the hot food bar and ordered two more meat dishes. Chicken tandoor: This is an Indian dish and not a traditional BD dish but I thought I would try theirs anyway. It tasted like card board. A very strong candidate for the worst chicken tandoor I've ever tasted. 1/5 Bihari Kebab: This isn't a traditional BD dish either but it's popular in BD and served in many restaurants. The flavor was okay but the beef had the texture of mashed potatoes. It was inedible. 1/5 After the meal, I had the unfortunate experience of having to use one of their restrooms. It literally smelled like shit. The meal was about $55 with tips (thankfully no tax was added). For a BD meal, that's a ridiculous amount of money to be spending for two people. We had to order a lot of food to make up for the small portions and almost none of it was good. This was my first experience at a Bengali restaurant and I was very happy that a waitress walked up to offer help as I blankly stared at an unmarked buffet table. She happily pointed out all of the vegetarian items (lentil dal, okra, mixed veggies, potatoes, and eggplant when I visited) and the prices. The large eggplant slices were $2 each and each other item was $3 for half a serving and $5 for a full serving. I went with two eggplant slices (one for the road), and half servings of all the veggies, minus the lentils. The okra was very good and provided a light, healthy balance. The potatoes were good but not spectacular. The mixed veggies (recommended by the waitress) were also very flavorful and tasty. My favorite was the eggplant with fried onions, although it was impossibly greasy. I spooned off at least a tablespoon of oil from each slice of eggplant and blotted it down but it was still too greasy. I think if it were served over a bed of rice with some greens, it would be better balanced. The server seemed to imply that every dish came with rice. I told her I didn't want any rice and she seemed shocked. She offered roti instead. I hesitated but said I would try one. I didn't really want any bread but figured I might as well try it since it came with it. Wrong. It's $2. Not a ton of money, but annoying to pay for something I didn't really want in the first place. We visit a couple a times a year and ALWAYS make time to try a variety of Bengali dishes which usually includes different types of rice dishes, fish, veggies, beef curry, chicken roast, and my very favorite bhortas (smashed and spiced veggies or fish/shrimp)! So so good! You can also stroll in for some tea, fried appetizers, and sweets. Please don't feel intimidated if you don't speak Bangla, just take your time and they'll understand your requests. Also, I'd recommend take out on hot days since they don't have air conditioning which doesn't make for a comfortable environment to eat hot and spicy foods. *Tip: we requested a spoon of beef tehari (rice dish) to ensure we like the flavor before spending $9ish per plate.
