I was visiting NY from Chicago and really wanted to try Bengali food. I read some reviews and decided that Haat Bazaar was the place to go. The food and service were both excellent and I could not have asked for a better experience for my first time trying Bengali cuisine. The restaurant does not have menus and the food is displayed in the front of the restaurant at a hot bar. Nothing was labeled and they did not have some of the items that I wanted to try, so we left things pretty much up to our server. She explained all of the dishes to us and we told her what we liked and she brought us a bunch of food. We also took her recommendation for dessert items and we were very pleased. Everything was delicious and so affordable. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who is looking to try Bengali cuisine. The restaurant is a very short walk from the F train and a really short trip from Manhattan. read more

The food is delicious!!! Had the goat biryani, goat curry, ilish (Hilsa fry) and shrimp curry (chingri malaikari) .....everything was insanely good!! The rajbhog at the end compliments the majestic meal. Don't go there if you are a hygiene freak...the atmosphere will scare you......But if your genuine love for good food overpowers other trivial emotions- This Is The Place For You!!! We came here after my husband had a craving for bengali food. We ordered polau, beef curry, shrimp with kochur loti (veggie), rice (comes with daal/lentil soup), a kabob and another beef dish I believe they called kalo gosht (black meat). Everything we ordered was delicious and many of the items were spicy (which I love). The portions are good and prices very reasonable. Service was quick and over all friendly (they checked in on us throughout our meal). It is definitely very authentic Bengali food, just like I'd find at home. We went in around 11am and probably left around 12pm. I did notice that within that hour, they had a lot more food come out that were not there when we ordered our meal. If you like fish curries or bhortas I recommend going after 12pm because if I had seen those when we ordered I would have ordered differently. Should we be in NY again we look forward to eating here again. read more

The goat haleem is one of the best things I've ever tasted. Period. For people like me who only speak English, it might be a little hard to put in an accurate order, but make sure you get the goat haleem. read more

Great location for all your Bengali needs! This place is a fantastic combination of a grocery and a dining experience wrapped up into one store. My family has been visiting this location for ~10 years and the quality has never been sacrificed. The food options on the restaurant side are also quite good. Highly recommend Haat Bazaar if you are shopping to cook your favorite Bangladesh/South Indian dish or are craving some Bengali food! read more

Anyone who loves fish (a taste for spicy fish dishes and curries is a must) should stop here and taste from the array of fish dishes they offer. The menu keeps changing based on the fishes cooked but you are sure to be able to taste a mixed variety of fishes from Bangladesh at any given day. Big fish pieces, tiny whole fish - fried , dry gravy, curry or bhortha, fish head prepared whole or cut up with vegetables. All simply delicious. They have meat and different kinds of biryani too daily but I could never get past the fish dishes, there are always so many to try ! read more

Haat Bazaar - This was dinner for two. We picked two 'full' fish curries, two 'half' fish curries, bhortha platter, shrimp bhortha and rice. - Bangladeshi Near Me - Jackson Heights, New York

Good quality fresh food . Tea is the best. Like back home taste .

It's an amazing place for any Bengali foodie. We were passing by New York, drove an extra hour to eat lunch at this place. We wanted to have maach-bhaat ; ordered shaak, daal, begun bhaja, rohu fish, Morola chorchori and tea. All the items were tasty; specially the rohu kalia! Packed for dinner too. It is pocket friendly and have very quick service. This place is not a fine dining place. Serves authentic Bengali food. This is a must stop whenever we are visiting NY. read more

Haat Bazaar is the Best Bangladeshi restaurant in Roosevelt Ave Jackson Heights. I've been going to this place for Years since I was Very young with my dad, and still love this place! Their prices are not bad at all, their food is always on point because my taste buds gets really excited! They always have a buffet in the front of the store so you tell them what you'll like to order and have a seat! my favorite is Pani puri, Briyani , Naan & kabab. read more

I love Bengali food and whenever my Bengali friends are unable to cook homemade for me this is where I head. Lots of food choices on display in a window case up front that you select from before being seated. The food is well seasoned and decent sized portions. If you like Indian food then give Bengali food a try-I love Indian food but to me Bengali food has a more powerful, intense array of flavors that are like magic on your tongue. Note: i read some of the other reviews where people mentioned a language barrier. The manager or owner speaks English and is very good at helping with selections. read more

Haat Bazaar - Pulao rice, naan and Halim (a must try flavorful stew) - Bangladeshi Near Me - Jackson Heights, New York

A Bangladeshi place even understaffed every time (2-3 weeks), still get my goat curry-ribs, bone marrow as the staff are in struggle-mode. But, most of all, it is as good as others nearby and $2-4 less. Please do not get from Kebab King which service, price and quantity went down, that's because I had mixed chicken instead of goat 2 times in a roll. read more

Stopped by for iftar, the waiters were very polite, responsive and attentive. My group indicated the iftar boxes were a bit overwhelming and we'd share a few boxes rather than having a box each. All I have to say is come here for the HALEEM. Spicy, yummy gooodness. Unfortunately they only give you two pieces of meat per order, it's a thing. Tried asking for more, it was a nope. In any case, have the Haleem to stay, the to go orders are pre-prepared and packed (shrug). Will be back forever and always. read more

When you're a noob to Bangladeshi food, it's always great when the staff senses your confusion and helps you figure out how much you need and what will make a well rounded meal. And I think that happened here? They definitely helped figure out how much we needed but it added up to a mountain of tasty meaty meat meats. Goat biriyani, lamb curry, chicken curry, and this yellow rice with fish. All quite solid, though it's lack of roughage might prove to be a problem for folks. I do sort of wish there was some sort of printed menu, but it is fun to go up to the counter and just point at stuff. read more

Not bad if you want authentic home made bengali food. Their prices were decent, $14 for a huge plate of kacchi biryani for 3, maybe 2 depending on how much you eat. They had a wide range of food. I got the round kebabs, wasn't too fond of that. The staff was very kind and attentive. One of the best services on jackson heights, usually they're a little neglectful in other places. Tbh, for me it was like eating at home so that's why I wasn't too fond of it but my mom loved it. Again, it's great if you want authentic bengali food or if yo momma doesn't wanna cook that dayy read more

Really good food and the selections are always amazing and sure to please any member of the group/family. It is very BANGladeshi cultured food at its finest. I always get at least one Lamb/Goat Halim and Borhani while pigging out two or more of their other delish items. There's a next section of the establishment has South Asian groceries and meat/fishes (again very SA way). The staffs are also very warm and gracious. read more

This is the only place my parents eat at when they visit Jackson Heights. The food is great, and its a super authentic experience. No menu, just different dishes everytime you go. The food here is delicious. Don't mind the decor and the ambiance and just focus on the food. This place is possibly open 24/7 or till incredibly late and the kitchen is constantly churning out food. They have different dishes available at different times of the day but a must-try is the Kacchi Biriyani, the Morog Polao or any fish dish. This place serves authentic Bangladeshi food and if you've never tried the cuisine then this is the best place to start :) read more

This is a Bangladeshi restaurant that doubles up a grocery store. I would say the food is about 3.5 star worthy. There is plenty of seating but not much décor which is expected. Typically, all the food is already laid out for you. You pick what you want and they heat it up. I prefer to get take out and heat it up myself. I got enough food from here for two meals. The first thing I had was the daal puri which was as big as a paratha. Some things in life are best left small. Daal puri is one of them. Too much puri and not enough daal is what you get when you make it that big. I had to dip it in the curry of the chicken roast to really enjoy it, which should never be the case as a daal puri is supposed be good on its own. The chicken roast was pretty good though. I also had the kachchi biryani which I found okay. The problem was the cut of the meat. I'm all about putting plenty of meat in the biryani but you gotta cut it in smaller pieces so that it mixes well and the biryani can take on some of that flavor. The mutton was cut too big for that. I don't know if they were just being lazy or what. My second meal consisted of roopchada (pomfret) and shorshe ilish (hilsa with mustard gravy). Both fishes are unique to the region though I've seen pomfret once at a Chinese restaurant. I prefer to eat pomfret when it's fried, but this curry version was good and I liked it a lot. They were pretty small in size but I give them props just for having this on the menu. The hilsa was over salted and I didn't get any mustard flavor. This annoyed me as hilsa is a very bony fish and it took me a while to clean it. Overall, this place was pretty decent but nothing to write home about. I did notice that they have many different kinds of bharthas (mashed vegetables) which is a staple of BD cuisine. I may come back to try some of them. read more

Delicious food with fast service. They don't have a lot of seating area but we still were seated down right away. Had the beef bhuna, eggs, parathas, papaya bhaji and kababs. Those parathas were sooooo good. Freshly made! Friendly staff catering to your every need! Highly recommend! Very welcoming atmosphere! read more

Along with Neerob in the Bronx, Haat Bazaar remains the best option for Bangladeshi food within a reasonable distance of Midtown. Having lived away from home for over 15 years, this is one of the places that makes me feel at home: so much so that I even brought my father here once. read more

The curry dank and fish always stank. The very essence of Bengali food and cuisine. Love it! Seriously though, give this place a try. If you're a 2nd generation Bangladeshi American, It's the closest thing to taste the food your Bengali parents grew up on! Highly recommend their Kachi Biryani and their chicken samosas! The best part is, the grocery is on the other side of the store so it saves me a trip and makes it all the more convenient, especially in a neighborhood like Jackson Heights read more

The food is great !!!!... I loved the kala beef bhuna...begun bhaja... kachki maach.... Ilish maach with kochu was really good..... With rice... the mosur daal comes free... :). Didn't find the goat curry that mesmerizing....rather didn't feel like bangali kosha mangsho !! After so many days I actually could see, taste and feel bengali food in front of me. I am so tired of eating the creamy chicken dishes, like this was a superb break from the monotony. The pricing was kinda little high according to the amount they offer. A cute little box of kachki fish is 6$ which I think would be fair if it was for 5$. The Kala Bhuna was a served in a teeny-tiny plate and if I am not wrong that was for 8-10$. The ilish maach was 10$ which is okay considering the fact that it is a pricey fish!! Begun Bhaja was 1$. I really wish they did better with the ambience. I recommend you having a backup of your perfume if you wanna meet someone or go some place nice after. Since, it is a open area you'll smell food after your'e done gorging on it. Definitely they should open up a branch in NJ. Apart from Bangladeshi folks.. there are tons of Bengali people from India in NJ who would be really happy with eating the gorgeous food from Bengal. read more

This is the best Bengali restaurant I have tried. They have a huge variety of fish curries and vegetable dishes. The fish curry with cauliflower and the bitter melon are my favorite. They also serve free dal with every meal. Comparing to most other South Asian places in this area, this one is super clean and the staff is very friendly. The spicy level here is not extreme here so it is really a great place to start exploring this cuisine. read more

I went there because it seemed to be the only place that serves Bengali fish dishes. My son ordered goat curry, rice, chicken seekh kabab. The goat curry was pretty spicy, but good. The seekh kabab was much milder, still very tasty. I, my husband and his nephew ordered haleem, ilish maach with eggplant, chital maach, morog polau, plain rice. Everything comes with dal, salad. I thought The chital maach and haleem were delicious, the morog polau was out of this world, the ilish maach mediocre (yeah!). The chital maach pieces are huge- two people can easily share one. My husband was underwhelmed by all the fish dishes, but loved the haleem and the polau. Overall I'd go back there in a heartbeat because I can get decent Bengali fare here without having to cook it all myself, but my husband is a little reluctant- he says he's been spoiled by my cooking. read more

Worst place to eat. I waited an hour for my food. Food arrived and the biryani had hair in it. Owner made a huge fuss and wanted to charge me simply because the biryani was heated. This is not the way to run a business. You can see how things are falling apart in there. I highly recommend no one eats there because you will end up in the nearest hospital which is elmhurst hospital! read more

Came here all the way from Brooklyn just to buy balachong. The grocery store smells like a meat market and it was narrow and small. Also saw a type of banana just like the ones we ate in Myanmar. But then there was another pile of bananas that was green but also rotting. Only the sweets tasted good and were fresh ! Right next door was a restaurant like store where my mom bought some samosas for $1.50 each compared to brooklyn where it's 75 cents each. I guess these were more pricey because they contain all meat with some strings of onion instead of just potato. read more

Ah, what can I say, this place was fantastic! After months of eating sub-par Americanized Indian food in Brooklyn, it was nice to get some authentic Bengali food in Jackson Heights. Samosas were fresh and the dough was perfectly flaky. The halim was incredibly excellent: tender meat, perfectly seasoned (although don't go for it if you can't tolerate spice). Their naan was also excellent (clearly made fresh and tasted so buttery without any butter being added on top). Paratha was ok. This isn't somewhere to go if you're looking for a fancy atmosphere, but you will get delicious food in a clean, unpretentious environment. The one potential difficulty is if you don't speak Bangla, it might be a bit difficult to navigate. Luckily I was with a colleague who does speak the language, but otherwise there is no English menu and all the signs in front of the ready-made food are in Bangla. But the staff seem to be bilingual so they should be willing to help if you ask them for assistance in ordering! read more

The quality of food is really good but it's overpriced. I think they over charge. My friend and I went there for breakfast, order 4 Roti and 2 side dishes , one chicken curry and Aloo bhaji and 2 cups of tea . Our bill was $30. I would recommend you to go there but check your bill and ask for pricing before you order. I think when they see tourist they overcharge. We were never presented with a menu. read more

I only come here every few months with my family after mid night to pick up groceries. The food is good and tasty. The servers are nice. It's not your typical restaurant. You order up and front and sit yourself, then they bring your food. I don't come here during the day time because it's packed with bengali men. They tend to be rude and the service is horrible during the day. However the food is still really good and fresh during the day than at midnight. Also pay with cash bc they don't charge tax on it. read more
