I was visiting NY from Chicago and really wanted to try Bengali food. I read some reviews and decided that Haat Bazaar was the place to go. The food and service were both excellent and I could not have asked for a better experience for my first time trying Bengali cuisine. The restaurant does not have menus and the food is displayed in the front of the restaurant at a hot bar. Nothing was labeled and they did not have some of the items that I wanted to try, so we left things pretty much up to our server. She explained all of the dishes to us and we told her what we liked and she brought us a bunch of food. We also took her recommendation for dessert items and we were very pleased. Everything was delicious and so affordable. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who is looking to try Bengali cuisine. We came here after my husband had a craving for bengali food. We ordered polau, beef curry, shrimp with kochur loti (veggie), rice (comes with daal/lentil soup), a kabob and another beef dish I believe they called kalo gosht (black meat). Everything we ordered was delicious and many of the items were spicy (which I love). The portions are good and prices very reasonable. Service was quick and over all friendly (they checked in on us throughout our meal). It is definitely very authentic Bengali food, just like I'd find at home. We went in around 11am and probably left around 12pm. I did notice that within that hour, they had a lot more food come out that were not there when we ordered our meal. If you like fish curries or bhortas I recommend going after 12pm because if I had seen those when we ordered I would have ordered differently. It's an amazing place for any Bengali foodie. We were passing by New York, drove an extra hour to eat lunch at this place. We wanted to have maach-bhaat ; ordered shaak, daal, begun bhaja, rohu fish, Morola chorchori and tea. All the items were tasty; specially the rohu kalia! Packed for dinner too. When you're a noob to Bangladeshi food, it's always great when the staff senses your confusion and helps you figure out how much you need and what will make a well rounded meal. And I think that happened here? They definitely helped figure out how much we needed but it added up to a mountain of tasty meaty meat meats. Not bad if you want authentic home made bengali food. Their prices were decent, $14 for a huge plate of kacchi biryani for 3, maybe 2 depending on how much you eat. They had a wide range of food. A cute little box of kachki fish is 6$ which I think would be fair if it was for 5$. The Kala Bhuna was a served in a teeny-tiny plate and if I am not wrong that was for 8-10$. The ilish maach was 10$ which is okay considering the fact that it is a pricey fish!! Begun Bhaja was 1$. I really wish they did better with the ambience. This is a Bangladeshi restaurant that doubles up a grocery store. I would say the food is about 3.5 star worthy. There is plenty of seating but not much décor which is expected. Typically, all the food is already laid out for you. You pick what you want and they heat it up. I prefer to get take out and heat it up myself. I got enough food from here for two meals. The first thing I had was the daal puri which was as big as a paratha. Some things in life are best left small. Daal puri is one of them. Too much puri and not enough daal is what you get when you make it that big. I had to dip it in the curry of the chicken roast to really enjoy it, which should never be the case as a daal puri is supposed be good on its own. The chicken roast was pretty good though. I also had the kachchi biryani which I found okay. The problem was the cut of the meat. I'm all about putting plenty of meat in the biryani but you gotta cut it in smaller pieces so that it mixes well and the biryani can take on some of that flavor. The mutton was cut too big for that. I don't know if they were just being lazy or what. My second meal consisted of roopchada (pomfret) and shorshe ilish (hilsa with mustard gravy). Both fishes are unique to the region though I've seen pomfret once at a Chinese restaurant. I prefer to eat pomfret when it's fried, but this curry version was good and I liked it a lot. They were pretty small in size but I give them props just for having this on the menu. The hilsa was over salted and I didn't get any mustard flavor. This annoyed me as hilsa is a very bony fish and it took me a while to clean it. Overall, this place was pretty decent but nothing to write home about. I did notice that they have many different kinds of bharthas (mashed vegetables) which is a staple of BD cuisine. I may come back to try some of them. read more

I went there because it seemed to be the only place that serves Bengali fish dishes. My son ordered goat curry, rice, chicken seekh kabab. The goat curry was pretty spicy, but good. The seekh kabab was much milder, still very tasty. I, my husband and his nephew ordered haleem, ilish maach with eggplant, chital maach, morog polau, plain rice. Everything comes with dal, salad. I thought The chital maach and haleem were delicious, the morog polau was out of this world, the ilish maach mediocre (yeah!). The chital maach pieces are huge- two people can easily share one. My husband was underwhelmed by all the fish dishes, but loved the haleem and the polau. This is the best Bengali restaurant I have tried. They have a huge variety of fish curries and vegetable dishes. The fish curry with cauliflower and the bitter melon are my favorite. Came here all the way from Brooklyn just to buy balachong. The grocery store smells like a meat market and it was narrow and small. Also saw a type of banana just like the ones we ate in Myanmar. But then there was another pile of bananas that was green but also rotting. Only the sweets tasted good and were fresh ! Right next door was a restaurant like store where my mom bought some samosas for $1.50 each compared to brooklyn where it's 75 cents each. Ah, what can I say, this place was fantastic! After months of eating sub-par Americanized Indian food in Brooklyn, it was nice to get some authentic Bengali food in Jackson Heights. Samosas were fresh and the dough was perfectly flaky. The halim was incredibly excellent: tender meat, perfectly seasoned (although don't go for it if you can't tolerate spice). Their naan was also excellent (clearly made fresh and tasted so buttery without any butter being added on top). Paratha was ok. This isn't somewhere to go if you're looking for a fancy atmosphere, but you will get delicious food in a clean, unpretentious environment. The one potential difficulty is if you don't speak Bangla, it might be a bit difficult to navigate. Luckily I was with a colleague who does speak the language, but otherwise there is no English menu and all the signs in front of the ready-made food are in Bangla. But the staff seem to be bilingual so they should be willing to help if you ask them for assistance in ordering! read more

I only come here every few months with my family after mid night to pick up groceries. The food is good and tasty. The servers are nice. It's not your typical restaurant. You order up and front and sit yourself, then they bring your food. I don't come here during the day time because it's packed with bengali men. They tend to be rude and the service is horrible during the day. However the food is still really good and fresh during the day than at midnight. Also pay with cash bc they don't charge tax on it. read more
