I was never truly alive until I had that lamb hummus dish. I was just a haze of a person, but the moment I put that to my lips, I felt truly present. The main dishes are a little pricey, but you taste it and it's like "oh, I understand why this fish was $50." Can't recommend the bronzini enough! Like one of the best fish I've had in my life. It's stuffed. And the exterior is crispy. And the interior is melt in your mouth. I would stay away from the salmon crudo. That dish was a little confused as to how all the ingredients tie together. But the quality of the fish was excellent. Solid quality on everything, really, and excellent service. Had popped in previously for a quick drink and a cheese board, which was great and the menu looked promising. Decided to make a reservation for double date for dinner as a follow up. We arrived on time and waited over 30 minutes to be sat for a 7:45pm reservation, we were hanangry to say the least. Disappointed that there was no service recovery/ apologies and no visit from any staff for the inconvenience. The food was great though. The half chicken was very memorable. Horrible(COVID) service. We came during brunch hour on a Saturday and our server was way too busy and even forgot to put in one of our orders. Menu was small and every time we tried to order, the item we wanted was "out." We had already finished our drinks and was never asked if we would like to order more. 3.5/5 I absolutely love how Gypsy Kitchen has transformed the space from the cold, modern atmosphere of the prior restaurant that used to be in this space. Now, it's cozy, warm, and inviting. The food was also delicious and we loved everything we tried. The wine selection is really interesting and includes bottles from Lebanon, Israel, and Greece which you don't see all that often in the US. The reason I am reluctant to give Gypsy Kitchen a hire rating is the service. We went on a Saturday night so I fully understand that it was peak business. What really threw me off was when our server asked if we wanted "water service" and we said yes, be brought bottled water. We asked for tap instead and he came by to fill our (very little) water glasses no problem. But when we asked for more water, he brought back the bottle and said "this will make things a lot easier on me" and rushed off. We would have had no problem with that but...he charged us for the bottled water that we didn't want in the first place. He also barely came back to check on us and didn't ask if we wanted to order more small plates or dessert. So, we didn't and we paid our bill and continued to nosh at home. I would still go back because this is my favorite cuisine, but I hope they get a better handle on the busier nights. read more

Best restaurant I've tried so far in DC! We came here for brunch and ordered the Hummus bil Lahme and the Tirokroketes which together were very filling. Both dishes were seasoned to perfection and loaded with flavor. The hearty hummus bil lahme comes with a warm pita bread and was cooked perfectly. The tirokroketes, which somehow were so soft yet managed to retain their crunch, were served with some type of chutney that perfectly complimented the cheese filling. One note: they did charge for extra pita bread, which makes sense, but we didn't realize they would. However, $3 for an extra pita bread is not enough to ruin my opinion of this place, and I highly recommend trying it out for brunch! read more

This place was recommended by a friend. We were excited to go there and my wife and I liked the fact we were seated on the second floor. The restaurant had a hip vibe and was packed with people. My wife and I ordered a number of items on the menu. Most were unimpressive and overpriced. Don't get me wrong, we are by no means cheap but if we're paying premium prices we expect the food to be good and it was very bland. This spot is very aesthetically pleasing and has a lovely outdoor area that would be perfect for any occasion. I ordered a drink and a couple small plates that were all very good! However, the service was very much lacking. Our waiter disappeared for 30 mins at a time and when I inquired with another waiter about a missing food item I was told "it might just be late". No offer to check on it or anything! That being said, because of the delay of our food, our waiter gave us a complimentary small plate which was nice. We ordered takeaway from this place during COVID times, a few days after it opened. The cocktails here are very unique, thoughtfully put together, and well-executed. Would definitely re-order. I tried an Achilles Leg Day, which was tangy, creamy, and refreshing, and an Isla de Moda, which was nicely spicy and strong. As for the food, though -- I would say that it is fairly solid, but really quite overpriced for the portion size. You can see from the attached pictures that the $14 kibbeh appetizer comes with only 3 pieces, and the $28(!) lamb moussaka is only about the size of half a soda can. They were rich, so you'll probably still walk away feeling full, but I wouldn't say they were any better really than the more normally-priced kibbeh or moussaka you can get elsewhere in DC. read more

Just had brunch there on the gorgeous rooftop deck. I made a noon rez with a friend - got there at 11:30am (roof is 1st come, 1st serve) - and was first in line. No one really showed up until about 11:45am. Gorgeous natural wood, iron, creams, green plants all over. Truly beautiful/chic. The food is quite like tapas - small plates perfect for sharing. We got crispy cauliflower- which was tasty & super creative. Super light batter & flash fried with a creamy lemon tahini base on which the veg was placed - with some caramelized dates & raisins & cilantro flower w/ a sprinkling of Calabrian chiles. Excellent combination of flavors. Mushroom toast quite tasty with a nice combo of wild mushrooms. Toast was super light. And our 3rd dish was more like a main dish but we split it --- a super-spiced lamb burger on an airy brioche bun with caramelized onions & arugula. Very very good. Only thing that was really not very good - I'd even go so far as to say was quite strange - was the dessert: chocolate pavlova. The waiter described it was a mousse-like chocolate pudding in an airy pastry thats flash-fried. No & No. It's more like a small bit of chocolate cake w/ a slight streak of custard inside a big meringue w/ some candied-like cherries on the side which they call "pickled." Really not very good at all. But the rest of the meal - and coffee - were fantastic, and the service (terrible dessert description aside) was quite good.
