She had a problem with the hostess seating us. I think she had friends she was saving the table for. We were poured a second glass of water after being here for an hour. The drinks were wonderful. A bit on the pricier side, but it appears to be worth it. I went there on a Friday night, and according to their website or even on Yelp, their closing hours stated that they were open until 1 am, so I made a reservation for 10:15, thinking that I had enough time with my date. Just to be sure, I even called ahead, and they confirmed the closing hour. However, when we got there, the hostess told us that they didn't take reservations after 10 pm, even though I made one on their website. But, it wasn't a problem since there were seats at the bar. When we were seated at the bar, the bartender immediately told us that last call was in 15 minutes. I asked about the closing hours, and they said that they recently changed the closing hours to 11 pm (wish that they told me that earlier). Even though the bartender was courteous and served good drinks, I was disappointed that I didn't get to try the food since the kitchen was already closed by the time I got there. So, I guess the rating is 3 stars for now because of what I went through, but now I know what to do next time. This review is subject to change. read more

I chose this restaurant on a whim because the reviews were so high. My experience wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good. The food was ok. We ordered the hummus (yum), pan con tomate (even better once I added manchego cheese), crispy cheese (it never came out), crispy chicken (the chicken inside is mushy), gambas (good flavor) and beef kabobs (according to my wife, they were decent). My wife ordered the fish, but the waiter came out 5 minutes later and informed us that there was no more left. Disappointing. Out of fish by 8p on a Friday? I'm confused. Our cocktails were ok, nothing to write home about. While our waiter was nice, we could tell he had way too many tables to attend to, as we saw him maybe three times and not once did he ask us how things were. I'm not sure I understand the hype, but hey...to each their own! It was a good opportunity to try something new, but we won't be back. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside, rooftop and food make it one of the nicer offerings on the street. I have only eaten on the rooftop terrace, and this review is specific to that space - The outdoor, Covid precaution friendly dining on the rooftop is accessed via a spacious main stairwell. There is more imaginative decor than usual in DC, with nicely appointed tables, proper stemware, and some low seatings with lots of throw pillows. The roof retracts and though the view isn't much, the breeze comes through even when the roof is not retracted as there are no side walls. The service has always been friendly and quick. The food-tapas-is excellent. We had a variety of dishes and everything from the hummus and amazing flatbread (would return for this alone) to the salmon crudo sang. The cocktails are worth trying to find the one you like. For me, the Hiltern was delicious, but the No M'asa was more like an icy summer lemonade. I wish they had more like the Hiltern with strong flavors and sweetness/heat - one with an actual chili pepper or rim of some kind would be nice. Try one, and then switch to their other libations like their wines list. I did appreciate that they have creative mocktails on the menu as well--I wish more restaurants did this for our friends who want something "fancy", but are not in the mood for alcohol. Cons-- the rooftop is an occasion/sink into it space, but has some policies that feel (eek) more like walk-up bar. And admittedly, it's good for that too! I've celebrated two birthdays here with spendy groups where the "2 hour rooftop time limit" felt kind of like a buzzer going off ... what, am I on an episode of Saved by the Bell or something? For me tapas = leisure, maybe with some Bouzouki or Flamenco music strumming in the background :). I am sympathetic that the Covid-precaution friendly (and beautifully appointed roof) is coveted and profitable real estate. Maybe GP could create a 'pay and linger' option for special occasions, or identify low-traffic hours or days of the week when the 2 hours can be officially "relaxed"? I will acknowledge that diners are forewarned about the strict outdoor time limits, and the management did show us some grace + flexibility as we were mid-courses when our seating expired. With that specific rooftop caveat (I don't believe there is a time limit for indoor dining), Gypsy Kitchen is overall a special and delicious restaurant read more

Cocktails were really interesting - not the usual stuff - and something for almost every taste. The food was delicious. We appreciated the large number of vegetarian options. One of our party has nut allergies and some modifications were able to be made for her. Dessert offerings are very limited. The server was awesome - sorry I didn't get her name. Gyspy Kitchen is a modern Mediterranean restaurant with a limited menu and fantastic lebnah. We went for dinner and ended up ordering a charcuterie board with two cheeses and two meats. It comes with these small crappy crackers that don't match the meat or the cheese. Why bother? Give me some regular bread and enough of it to eat the meat and cheese with sheesh. Regardless, the lebnah is where the party is. Get that. Next time I'll order it with items that are not the charcuterie board. read more

My friends and I went here this week for DC Restaurant Week. The dinner price increased to $55 this year, but this was the best restaurant week meal I have had. I made reservations on open table and had to modify it, and did so over the phone easily. I really like that they require proof of vaccine & ID. My friends and I started with cocktails, and they were delicious. The names are very cute, and the flavors were amazing. I did feel that the drinks were a good value (aka strong). I had the lunar phase & golden hour- both were really good without being too sweet. They had a lot of options for the RW menu. Take 2 friends with you and you can try the whole menu! The naan they bring with the hummus and labneh is sooooo good. I could have just eaten both dips out of the bowl. The only thing we wouldn't recommend is the beets- def get something else. The squash and lentil soup was also delicious. I would recommend all of the entrees- the moussaka & the salmon were amazing. For dessert, they were out of the banana dessert, so we had two of the chocolate cake. The honeycomb on it was so delicious and unusual. The ambiance is energetic and the aesthetic is so warm. Our server was really great. We were told as soon as we were seated that there was a 2 hour limit, but our food took longer than that to come out. I didn't feel rushed at all and our server really let us enjoy our meal. I would love to go back. read more

Amazing. We've lived all over the world and perhaps best chicken ever. Flavorful throughout, perfectly glazed with accompaniments (relish and salad) change the flavor of every bite. A simple lettuce salad was elevated to another level with the pickled radishes? and minted pangrattato. Fried cauliflower with tahini & chutney was divine. A great place for vegetarian or meat eaters. Beso was our waiter and thankfully gave great suggestions for everything to order. We followed his recommendations and were glad for it! read more

Our dinner here started off on the wrong foot when the hostess didn't bother to look up or honor our reservation. We made a reservation for the rooftop and called to confirm it. When we arrived, she told us they were "only doing indoor seating" which was plainly untrue given that we saw people outside. When we pushed back, we were told we could go sit outside, so we found our own table. Our waiter was clearly overworked and overwhelmed but he was generally fine. We ordered a charcuterie board with six items, three meats and three cheeses. It arrived with two meats and three cheeses. When we told the waiter, he asked us to check under the other meats... which we had but it wasn't there. He went to go get it for us, but then the manager(?) came out and squinted at our platter and pointed at the duck and said "there's your sausage." When we politely pointed out it wasn't sausage he said "oh, ok." Eventually they sent out our sausage. We had been told there was a two hour time limit on the table, which was fine, not a problem. With about an hour left, we ordered another round of drinks. We sort of forgot about them, until our waiter came to us and reminded us we had only thirty minutes left at the table, at which point I had to remind *him* that we were waiting on drinks. He finally brought them and then with about fifteen minutes left he asked us if we wanted dessert?? although we'd been reminded fifteen minutes earlier to wrap things up. He also told us to "take our time" with the bill despite him hovering nervously for the past thirty minutes clearly waiting for us to leave. I only noticed that because for the first half of our reservation he was hard to find and we had to flag him down several times to get water or order food. Overall, this restaurant has poor management practices. I have no problem abiding by a two hour limit but it's hard to stick to with poor and infrequent service, especially when your food or drink gets forgotten about. I wish this restaurant had been better, but their food isn't good enough to make up for a rushed and slightly chaotic dining experience. read more

Been here twice in 2 weeks! My fiancee and I had a great experience with food and wait staff both times. Our first visit on 11/14/2020 was phenomenal. I took my fiancee here for his birthday and the vibe was very relaxed and the environment was very inviting. We sat at a rooftop table with tables specifically left empty for social distancing. Our server Gabriella was attentive and extremely helpful in her suggestions. We got the duck prosciutto, hummus & flatbread, fried cauliflower, crispy chicken briouat, and the duck confit leg. Every bite was of every dish was euphoric! We asked Gabriella to give our compliments to the chef (something we've never done) and Chef Drew ended up coming to our table to speak with us! We were able to get his thoughts and insights about what inspired him to put together such an eclectic menu. My fiancee was floored by the experience and still talking about how much he enjoyed himself days later. Our 2nd visit was on 11/22/2020. Same amazing experience. We didn't get an opportunity to ask our server's name but she was amazing as well. We got the charcuterie board with double duck prosciutto and hummus & flatbread for our starters. When it came time for our main, our server remembered our dietary restriction and made recommendations accordingly. It's the little things that matter! We ordered the lacquered chicken which is plenty for 2 people and it was amazing! The chicken was moist and flavorful and the accompaniments were perfectly paired. Cute place but not for vegan / plant-based customers. They have vegan items on the menu but I don't think I trust them that they are truly vegan. I asked why the hummus and bread item was listed as vegetarian. They said the bread has animal products. So I ordered the arugula salad, and when it came out with croutons, I asked if they were vegan, and they were not. What possess them to put non-vegan food on a vegan dish? When I told them they shouldn't put non-vegan food on a vegan dish, they acted as if I was being picky. I ordered the pea soup - another vegan item, but they were out it, so I just ate the salad. Then I ordered a decaf coffee, but they did not have any plant milk. I have run into this before. Why on earth if a restaurant has vegan items on their menu, would they not carry plant milk. smh Anyway the arugula salad was good w/o the croutons. And if you want to sell more food - include plant-based bread as an option w/the hummus dish. read more

Complete crap of service. I called to make reservations and they only gave me the option for reservations at 10:15PM. My guest and I arrived at 10:15PM and we were told that we only had 15 min to order food because last call is at 10:30PM. When we inform our waiter about this he shrugs his shoulders and says "oh well." They took forever to bring us our water and they rushed to clean our table. Also, they sat us in the back near the kitchen when they had plenty open seats towards the center of the restaurant. The only reason why this review is one star is because the hummus was amazing. Scallops were great but they only provided 2 scallops on the plate. They need to bump that up to 4 scallops. Waiter gave us uncomfortable service and did not follow up with us on how our night was going or how our food was. read more

This is a wonderful and really eclectic restaurant! We had everything from cheese croquettes (delicious) to burrata with fresh warm bread (delicious!) to a refreshing summer salad to a dish with chicken and orzo that was fantastic! They have food from multiple cultures and all is crafted skillfully with great balance of flavor and texture. And Alex provided phenomenal service. Their "bare necessities" drink is a mocktail that is a sparkling lemonade with vanilla in it. It was interesting. The vanilla was a little much for me, but I am still glad I tried it. This is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The vibe is very trendy with lots of plants. The cocktails and food are also great. The Canela y Sol cocktail was so good that when my husband tried mine he ordered his own as well. For food the Hummus bil Lahme was probably our favorite dish. Service was definitely on the slow side. We had a reservation but still waited at least 15-20 minutes for our table. Ordering and waiting for drinks to come out was also longer than usual but honestly everything tasted so good it made up for it. read more

We ordered the Kale salad, crispy cauliflower, crispy chicken briouat and the tirokroketedes. OMG, the food was SO GOOD!! Amir, checked on us all the time so big time bonus!
