My coworker raved about Amazonia, how it's the best Peruvian spot in DC and that it's his go-to when he's missing Peru. He convinced me pretty quickly. I made a reservation with a friend this past Monday for dinner, and we had a great time! The food came out quickly and the servers were attentive. CEBICHE CLÁSICO - 26 This was a very refreshing cerviche that was topped with sweet potatoes, cancha ("corn nuts"), choclo (Peruvian corn), pickled red onions, and this seaweed/algae topping. It was quite citrusy, which paired well with the very fresh fish. The toppings added more crunch and crisp, along with some natural "sweetness" that each of them have. PAPAS DE HUANCAYO - 15 The potatoes were topped generously with aji amarillo (creamy sauce made with yellow chili peppers), queso fresco, and two halves of a quail? egg. Wow, this was so delicious. I simply loved the aji amarillo, which was so savory with a slight spice to it. The queso fresco added extra cheesy-creaminess. This was my favorite out of all the things we tried. I was thinking about the papas de huancayo even two days later. ANTICUCHERIA + corazon de res - 9 + chicken thigh - 9 These are charcoal-grilled skewers marinated with cumin, chicha de jora, oregano, soy sauce, red wine vinegar, and aji panca. I usually imagine skewers to be on the dryer side, but these were incredibly saucy. There was a bit of heat in the midst of all the spices, along with a nice acidic tang. Lots of flavors happening all at once! I enjoyed the texture of the beef heart, which almost reminded me of the crunch of chicken liver. The chicken thighs were tender and delicious. LOMO SALTADO - 34 Large plating, but it was emptier than it appeared to be. There wasn't much jasmine rice, which was perfect for the both of us. A few pieces of wagyu beef, which was tender, but underwhelming for wagyu. The potatoes soaked up the savory, soy-based sauce well, and the tomatoes were juicy. Overall, pretty solid entree, but I'd like to try something else next time. UNGURAHUL AÇAÍ - 15 We wanted to end our meal with something sweet, but refreshing. And what's more refreshing than an acai bowl? This was topped with a variety of fruits, some I've never had before. Good amount of granola (made of amaranth and quinoa?) that provided a satisfying crunch. The acai itself was almost like a paste. The bowl itself was cold and refreshing, but a bit too sweet. Overall, the flavors of each dish we got were explosive and unique. I did think it leaned slightly too salty. Amazonia offers unique flavors and techniques, though I question the pricing, balance, and portion sizes. We made a reservation for the rooftop patio, which had a beautiful view of the surrounding brick buildings. The space felt lush and vibrant, filled with greenery and natural sunlight. Our table had a lamp that unfortunately did not work, but overall the ambiance was still lovely. Our server was incredibly attentive and offered great recommendations. The appetizers arrived at a good pace, though our entrée took longer than expected. *Classic Punch: the only cocktail served in a pitcher format, which yielded about five to six glasses. Our server highlighted their in house aged liquor, and it showed in how smooth the drink was. It had a clean profile with a natural balance of tartness and sweetness from the pineapple. Very refreshing and easy to keep drinking. *Corazón De Res: one of the best skewers I have had. The beef hearts were well seasoned with ají panca and cumin, with a deep, developed flavor and great texture. The huacatay aioli and rocoto sauce added layers of creaminess, acidity, and heat. Easily the most well rounded dish. *Papas De Huancaína: a chilled potato dish with an interesting concept. The standout element was the soft quail egg on top. The potatoes themselves were cooked through but still slightly firm. The ají amarillo sauce overwhelmed the dish, and there were not enough potatoes to balance its sweet and tangy intensity. This would have improved with either less sauce or more potatoes. *Seasonal Cebiche: the daily special featured Hokkaido scallops. The scallops were tender and naturally sweet, complemented by the acidity of the marinade. Toppings included seaweed, cancha, choclo, red onion, and sweet potato, offering a variety of textures. The seaweed and choclo added chewiness, while the thinly sliced red onion could have been more generous for added sharpness. The sweet potato was especially memorable for its sweetness. The cancha added crunch, though it felt slightly overused compared to the other toppings. *Cebiche Amazónico: recommended by our server for a spicier, creamier profile. The white fish was tender and took on the marinade well. This version leaned more acidic, with the sauce standing out more than the fish itself. The toppings were similar to the seasonal cebiche but included plantain chips. The chips felt redundant alongside the cancha and would have worked better as a separate side. *Pulpo Al Olivo: the octopus itself was very well cooked, tender with a natural sweetness. Unfortunately, the botija olive sauce was overly thick and heavy, and there was far too much of it for the portion of octopus. The strong tang completely overpowered the dish. *Mafalde: the house made pasta had a nice chew and a beautiful shape. The wagyu beef cheek was tender and generously portioned. However, there was a noticeable gaminess that the tomato ragù did not fully mask. The sauce was cooked down but needed more seasoning and depth. *Chazuta: a surprisingly expensive dessert for its size and subtle flavor. The macambo added a pleasant crunch, but the matcha center was very mild, making the dish feel one note. The passionfruit droplets were bright and flavorful, though too sparse to tie everything together. An underwhelming finish. The cebiches, skewers, and drinks were the highlights and truly impressive. The rest of the dishes fell short in flavor, especially when considering the price point. The 20 percent automatic gratuity felt justified given the quality of service, but if I were to return, I would focus on the smaller plates. 5/5 date night. Amazonia's drinks and food were on point, service was great, and the atmosphere was apropos for a restaurant themed after the Amazon... We started with drinks, the Amazonian punch was the clear favorite of the 3 ordered; they do a very strong smoke and the drink is served with a mate straw. El cacao was very spirit forward, did not have the cacao smoke that was described on the menu but was still quite tasty with small notes of cacao (you can see the fragments). The scallop parm appetizer was very savory and the sauce was to die for, slightly tart with cumin it hits the right spots on the tongue for the first dish of the night. We followed up with filet mignon and pork belly skewers, paired with what I'm guessing is a toum-style aioli and in-house sriracha? The skewers were delicious by themselves, I love sriracha but it was strong enough to cover up the seasoning of the skewers. The pork belly was melt in your mouth delicious, preferred that over the filet. We ordered the seasonal scallop ceviche and bluefin sashimi, both were delicious and the sauces were quite unique leaning on the tart/sour side, seems to be tamarind and lime as well. Ended with the pulpo al josper and chocolucuma; the octopus was very tender pairing very well with the mashed potatoes texture. The cake paired with ice cream dessert was also delicious and I can't believe I ate that much of it given that I can't have much dairy. The service was exceptional, staff was very knowledgeable of the menu and was able to provide great recommendations on what to order next. The restaurant vibe was also buzzing, many folks here on date night with cool beats playing in the background. The volume is a bit high so it's not whisper-quiet but closer to busy coffee shop volumes. Order at least 3 to 4 dishes to share for 2 people, get at least 1-2 drinks a person. This review is for Causa. We had an amazing tasting menu dinner here. It was our second time having the tasting experience at Causa. The service was excellent! They go above and beyond. I love how they explain the origins of every course. We ordered the fish add-on, both hot and cold preparations of the John Dory fish. Loved the ceviche and the Chinese-inspired hot preparation. I had the non-alcoholic drink pairing, and it was a unique assortment of NA bubbles, wine, kombucha and mocktails. All of the food was delectable! We loved the preparations and the creativity of the dishes. One standout dish for us was the uni soup served in a glass sea urchin. We also loved the potato preparations. I went with a friend for restaurant week and we had such a great time. We sat outside, which felt like an oasis. It was so toasty, and they gave you blankets to bundle up with. The decorations added to the vibe and it added to the experience. I would definitely go back and request to sit outside--I would imagine when the weather is great, it's a great spot to be. Our server was Ashleigh H and she was wonderful. We had a lot of questions and she gave us great feedback and was very engaging. Great wine reccs and was on top of the ball the whole night. The food was great, to start my friend enjoyed the short ribs and I also liked the cebiche, but it felt a little empty without a crispy element to eat with it. The chaufa was delicious, like a fried rice but elevated. So yummy. The sea bass antichucho was delicious. The sauce on top is yummy, but there's a spicy red sauce that you should use as well. The desserts were okay, I liked the guanabanana (way less banana than I thought--in a good way), but the suspiro didn't have a deep enough chocolate flavor for me--my friend loved both. Amazonia was such an amazing experience from the host to the decor to the food, and especially our server, Michael. We went for RW and honestly almost every dish stood out. The Peruvian scallops, salmon belly anticuchos, ribs, and lomo saltado were all hits, but the real highlight for me was the dessert the chocolucuma (SO good- we were fighting for the last bite) lol. I tried the pisco sour and the Café Cusco, and both were great. Michael was incredible, super knowledgeable about the food and the history behind it, which really made the experience even better. I am very thankful to have had a second chance with Causa because now I understand the experience now and it was amazing! The service were very attentive and kind; I enjoyed getting to speak to my waiters a lot. I was able to try their winter menu this time around. Had a welcome drink and champagne, alongside the starter bite, welcome snacks, and paracas. I particular enjoyed the flower shaped snack the best. The paracas was a tad bit salty for me but still tasty overall. I enjoyed the presentation for the potatos, chiles, and andes dish! I particularly liked the ending potato with the cheesy/spicy sauce! There was also a complimentary ceviche dish which was very refreshing with its fried corn. The Fishing on the Coast dish was very delicious, putting black cod, sauces, and very flavoured onions together. Perhaps my favourite savoury dish of the night. I enjoyed the Algea and The North dish too with the gnocchi and duck - the duck had a nice crisp taste to it. I really loved the Smoke in the Amazon dish with its wagyu short rib in the sauce. The desserts were honestly the best parts for me! I loved the pre-dessert, which was ice-y, lightly cacao-flavoured, and refreshing. Simple and a nice palette cleanse. Then, the Chazuta was delicious with the different textures you could try the rose with - I particularly liked it with the cacao and crunchy bits. Ended off with some dessert snacks too. Once our table was ready we were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne and a small bite. I did get a sneak peak and it's a lovely space for warmer days. The indoor seat felt intimate with the lighting and seating arrangements. I love, love that their menu is allergy friendly! I can see exactly why Causa's food earned its Michelin star. Even when you think you know what you're about to taste, every dish at Causa blows expectations out of the water. Each dish was very carefully crafted, blending textures, flavors, and temperatures. Fish is flown in overnight from Tokyo. We had the cod with sweet potatoes on the side. It was amazing! (I'm not sure if worth $100+ amazing but hey, for the experience.) The lomo saltado was definitely worth it, and so were every dessert. Highly recommend the chazuta. The waitress informed us that this is the only restaurant in the US that uses macambo, almost like a type of white cacao. It was unlike anything I've tasted, and delicious! We've been to many of the DC Michelin restaurants and I spotted this one on my credit cards new perks and thought we'd give it a try. Overall this was a big let down and probably our least or second to last favorite in the area. We enjoyed the aesthetic of the restaurant and the staff were all friendly and knowledgeable. I will say the servers need to speak up. They were hard to hear. Many of the mumbled or talked quiet and fast. So that was a little disappointing. I really liked the one starter that was similar to sushi and disliked the purple one (contained olives and. I hate olives) l. My Wife was the opposite. She really enjoyed the purple one with olives. The tradito de atun was decent but the spice was overpowering. I like raw fish but wasn't a big fan of this. The black cod was awesome. The wagyu was good, not great. However the dessert was AMAZING! We both agreed this was most creative and interesting dessert we've had. It was very tasty too and had wonderful textures. Sadly I don't think we'd return here and I know reviews weren't allowed to be posted for some time. As someone who does not live in or near DC, I've been to Amazonia 3 times now and each time was a highlight of my DC dining experience. Lomo Saltado is one of my favorite dishes and the one here NEVER disappoints me. On top of that, I've never had anything bad here. From the Cebiche Amazonico to the Chazuta dessert, everything that they offer is something to tell your people about. Beyond how good the food and drinks are, I wanted to give a special shoutout to my most recent server, Michael. Although he single-handedly covered orders for the rooftop patio alone, he spent a significant amount of time with my table. He was funny, personable, and deeply knowledgable about the menu. My husband and I came here for dinner and sat at the bar upstairs (Amazonia). The kitchen for Causa and Amazonia are the same but the menus are different upstairs and downstairs. We had the à la carte menu upstairs. The menu was excellent and had plenty of vegetarian options for me and plenty of meat (non pork) options for my carnivorous dining companion. We got skewers, ceviche, mushrooms, chaufa, rack of lamb, dessert, and cocktails. Everything was amazing. The mushroom skewers were the start of the show. We were here to celebrate our 6th anniversary. They have two restaurants called Causa and Amazonia. We didn't know about it until we got there and the host asked us if we had reservations at the causa or the Amazonia. Causa is their tasting menu style of restaurant. Amazonia is a-la-carte. We love Peruvian food we were looking forward to our dinner here. Our waiter was very friendly and talked us into trying some of her favorites. Highly recommend chicken skewers. It's one of their street food and we have had the authentic ones when we visited Peru. This one tastes great and very close to the authentic ones. They also serve it with the spicy ricotto sauce which is my favorite. It's very spicy in Peru. This is my friend's favorite restaurant in DC, and he tricked me into thinking we would get to choose the fish we wanted to eat by pointing to in a fish tank. We did get to select a specific fish though, but through images online. A very unique experience, and I just let my friends drive me through it because I had no idea what was going on, but omg what a culinary treat. The most delicious sauces I had ever had. I wanted to keep the plates there so I could eat all the sauce, but I realized they were waiting for us to finish before bringing us our next plate haha. The raw treatment of the fish with the amarillo sauce was mindblowing lol. All the skewers had an intense grill flavor to them that made them all delicious. The potatos + quinoa was really good too. The quinoa was fried so it was like dippin dots or snap crackle, pop cereal on delicious potatos. The main course - the fish, was also really good, but my friends mentioned that it was bitter because the stomache may have gotten in the flesh during cooking. I had a few drinks with a friend and we split the Chaufa. The Chaufa was great and packed plenty of flavor. It was a perfect size to split between two people if aren't too hungry but want something a little filling. I love that the old fashioned came in a little basket. I knew after that first visit I had to come back, so I was excited when I saw them on the list for summer restaurant week. For restaurant week I started off with the El Cacao for my drink and Costillas Nikkei and Mushroom Anticuchos for my starters. I loved the Costillas. The sauce on the ribs was really good. The anticuchos were good, I enjoyed the sauce that came with the skewers. The El Cacao is a pretty solid drink. It's essentially a smoked old fashion with hints of chocolate. For my main I did Jalea Nikkei. That catfish was my easily my favorite part of the meal. It was well seasoned with a nice crisp, but the wasabi tartar sauce really did the trick. I wish it included two pieces of fish. I closed out with a mango gelato. I enjoyed the crumbles in that. Service was great during both of my visit. The bartender did a good job recommending drinks and my waitress did a good explaining the menu and giving recommendations when I was torn. I've been here a few times for drinks, and the rooftop atmosphere is always a great spot to enjoy a cocktail. This time, though, the food really stood out -- it was exceptional! We tried the Summer Restaurant Week tasting menu, and my favorite dish by far was the scallops with Parmesan. The sauces were all delicious, with a great balance of smokiness and bold flavor. The chocolate dessert was also very good and we got another one that had caramel and tasted like a dolce de Leche that was great as well. The service was excellent as well. Had a great experience at Amazonia in DC. First off, the service was amazing. Our server was super friendly, walked us through the menu, and honestly made the whole experience great. Food// Madurito:: this was delicious. It had a really nice balance of savory and sweet. I didn't really get much peanut flavor or crunch, so the texture felt a bit one note, but the overall flavor was unique and very good. Just make sure you get all the elements in one bite because without the plantain it leans really salty. Still highly recommend trying it. Salmon Belly Kebabs:: They were tasty with a great sauce, though the portion size is definitely small. Enjoyable, but not something I'd rush to order again. Cebiche Amazonico:: This one was just okay for me. It tasted like standard ceviche and nothing particularly stood out besides the sweet potatoes. I probably wouldn't get it again. Llamo Saltado:: This was also just okay. It reminded me a bit of a stew. The beef was cooked properly but was still on the chewier side. Not bad, but not something I'd order again Desserts were both great enjoyed the chocolate cake the best and im not even a big chocolate person. The atmosphere is very cute with dark, moody lighting and a great vibe. The tables are pretty small so I wouldn't go with a huge group, but it's perfect for two to four people. read more

We've dined at both causa and Amazonia and enjoy exploring different aspects of their menu when we come. We've had their fresh daily selection of fish prepared to both hot and cold preps (you can do this if you have a large enough fish). We also love the standard items on Amazonia's menu as there's a large selection. Don't skip the pasta, it is so flavorful and delicious. We also love causa for special occasions and find the menu to be quite creative. Service is great and the servers we've had are always knowledgeable about the cuisine which is nice. Oh and one of our favorite desserts is here too -- it's the one with macambo which is like a white chocolate dessert also made from traditional ingredients. read more

Went here for restaurant week with my friend, saw they have a Michelin star and it looked interesting. When you first walk in there is a lot of greenery it reminded me of a a jungle, it was really pretty. The drinks are huge and pack a punch, the classic punch was so good. We started off with three chicken and mushroom, I liked them with the yellow sauce but I wish the skewers were a bit bigger . For my main course I got the lomo saltado the potatoes and tomatoes in there were delicious with the steak. It was only a little bit salty but overall I enjoyed it didn't have tons of leftovers. The servers were very intentive and gave great recommendations on what to try overall I would come back, but I would like to try the regular menu. read more

Had a fantastic evening at Amazonia! I've had both Causa and Amazonia on my list for a while, and finally got the chance to visit Amazonia while hosting some friends from out of town. Our party of five was seated on the outdoor patio -- it was a gorgeous night with perfect weather. Naturally, we kicked things off with pisco sours. I've always been a fan, especially after spending time in Peru. We ordered everything to share: the Anticucho Plate, Cebiche Nikkei, Amazonia Cebiche, Pulpo al Josper, and Patarashca. Every dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Our server, Manny, was fantastic -- attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. I'm already looking forward to coming back and exploring more of the menu. read more

The atmosphere was unique. Overall food was a 5. The Scallops a la Parmesana were good. The scallops were sweet and tender. The salmon belly skewer was delicious with and tasty aioli on the side. The chicken skewer was decent. The meat was tender. The veggie chaufa was full of flavors from a hint of sweetness to savory. The patarashca (trout, was the market fish) was delectable. The sauce was oh so delicious. This dish was served with 4 patacones (tostones), which I love. Location is a bit tricky to find especially if you are not familiar with the area. Ok this place IS amazing. Vibes are amazing (v trendy), service is almost fine-dining level amazing, cocktails were some of the best I've had in a restaurant, and the food is spectacular. - Amazonia Cebiche: 100/10 (ok I actually really liked the pairing of the fish with sweet potato.. it was v addicting) - Pulpo Al Josper: 100/10 (omg the octopus was so soft and the sauce on top was creamy and just chefs kiss!) - Lomo saltado: 10/10 (tender beef, yummy sauce, and yummy veggies! Nothing like new newww but it was great) - Cocktails: 100/10 (some of the best pisco sour I've had and idk what that refreshing cocktail was but it was amazinggg!! Wow, some amazing food upstairs at Amazonia! This was our first visit to Amazonia, which is upstairs from the Michelin star restaurant Causa. We sat in their outdoor area, which is covered, quite large, and pleasant. The server was very knowledgeable, attentive, and willing to provide recommendations. We were really wowed by the food. We had two starters, a plantain stuffed with ragu, topped with cheese, and a pork belly skewer. Both were amazing! We had the tuna ceviche, which was very good, but a little bit simple in preparation. We shared the Lomo Saltado, which was the best we have ever had. Please note that this entree is served in a large dish, but it only has a medium quantity of meat. We tried a caramel chocolate cake topped with a nutty ice cream for dessert, which was very tasty. I had an old fashioned and their Amazonia Punch. Both were really well prepared. The metal straw in the punch was a nice touch, which kept the drink super cold as you drank it...very refreshing. We will definitely be back for another visit at a future date. read more

What an experience.. very nice music I walked in by myself no reservations looking to seat anywhere.. the waiting time was nothing and the were able to squeeze me in. The food is amazing.. the drink is something you gonna come back for it.. serves was provided by Grec was fantastic.. he helped me to pick all what I got which was the best recommendation..
