My second time here and a vastly different experience than the first time. Starting with the good: our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The ambiance was also great and fun. The drinks were also tasty-- I got the winter G&T and it was very pretty and delicious. The food is where things really went downhill for us. We started strong with the labneh and fresh flatbread which was definitely the best thing we ordered. Also delicious was the grilled halloumi. I really enjoyed the falafel as well. We liked the winter salad fine but it was not our favorite. The pork belly was very disappointing. They didn't cook it long enough for the fat to break down and so there were big pieces of tough chewy fat. The mushrooms were also inedible. They were undercooked and nearly impossible to chew and the flavor was not really not pleasant. I never spit food out but came really close with this. The shrimp croquettes were very weird. It was like fried thick fish soup. It was super fishy tasting and we didn't end up eating the last one. Really bummed bc this was a birthday dinner and last time we tried it everything was delicious. Food: excellent Service: second to none To start I ordered the beet salad and the labneh. Now, if you've read my reviews, you know I'm dead serious about my beet salad. This was a decent variation, but I've had better. But again, it's a bit unfair, I've had way too many beet salads to compare against. I'd give it a B. Quality ingredients. Just not my favorite composition. It was made with yogurt and micro greens. Everything else was an A+. Next I got the labneh. It was amazing. I didn't even know what labneh was but it had a bunch of yummy ingredients (pomegranate, citrus, pistachio). But what really stole the show was the bread that was served with it. O m effing g. Dip it in the labneh and enjoy. Fantastic! For dinner I had the lacquered chicken. Again, read my reviews, I'm hella picky with chicken. This was almost perfect. Flavor was fantastic. Only complaint is the skin could be crispier. Drinks were good they had a reasonable selection of brandy. Now let's talk about "above and beyond". When I ordered my drink I told the bartender I wanted to try both varieties of brandy. I ended up engaging in conversation with another patron. As I was eating bartender sensed that I was sucking ice, and lowkey filled my glass with the other brandy as I continued talking to the lady. It was impeccable timing and low key wingman behavior. Crispy shrimp was good- though my dining partner thought it had too much of the kadayif (I liked that). The crispy cauliflower was delish especially the relish. We came here when happy hour started and it was great. Only the upstairs bar was open for happy hour but then the downstairs bar was open by the time we left at 5pm. I'm happy I was able to try Gypsy Kitchen while I was in the area. I dined on a Sunday evening with 5 other companions. We had reservations and were able to take a seat as soon as we arrived though it wasn't packed. We sat in the back by the kitchen which has been my new favorite seat in the house where I can watch the line. This spot was the perfect nightcap to the 2-restaurant tour with this being the first spot. For the table, we had the Green Goddess, Hummus bil Lahme, Falafel and Crispy Cauliflower. Everything was spot on! Though, as I write this I now realize the cauliflower wasn't crispy, at least I don't remember it being crispy. The hummus may have been my favorite though. I also ordered the Canela y Sol which was amazing! So amazing I had two. Oh and our server, Jose was top-notch. His energy, customer service and recommendations were superb. I would return to this lively, fun restaurant which provides attentive service, although every time we asked our server a question (how is the octopus prepared, what is this on top the square of cheese) he didn't know but at least he went to the kitchen to check. The lamb and hummus dish was sublime and highly recommended. I had the halloumi and Jamon Serrano which were OK. I wasn't a fan of how the Jamon was presented on the plate (in a clump rather than laid out in straight strips) Likewise, the octopus would have been more pleasing visually if sliced into medallions rather than long tentacles. After walking past this place many times over the last few years on the way to my favorite restaurant (RIP compass rose) finally tried this out for brunch. We were a group of six and recited immediately. The ambience is warm, bohemian and very welcoming. The service was jovial and friendly. The appetizers were all good, the crunchy cauliflower was roasted just right, the spice bread was soft and fluffy, the hummus was lemony and very smooth, and the falafel was classic. I tried the open faced omelette as an appetizer and unfortunately was a bit disappointed to find it overly basic as essentially scrambled eggs with small pieces of potatoes and mushroom on top- nothing to offend me, but I wouldn't get it again. For dessert I tried the chocolate cheesecake which was delicious- almost basque in style. While I am no longer a pescatarian, I do still lean toward veggie heavy meals and Gypsy Kitchen knows their veggies. Their Nomada cocktail is delicious-- rum, pineapple, banana, and lime. A little tropical but not too heavy. For food, I'm partial to their hummus and flatbread (this is some GOOD bread), crispy cauliflower, mushroom toast, seared halloumi (the kumquats give this the best tang), and the tirokroketes. I was hesitant to come to Gypsy Kitchen for the longest time because I still miss Masa 14. Nevertheless, I finally gave this place a chance, and I'm happy to say that it lived up to the hype. I'm a huge fan of their happy hour, though it does get packed very quickly. Happy hour is both downstairs at the bar and upstairs on the rooftop. The upstairs space is exactly the same layout as Masa, but with cuter decorations. It definitely gives a Mediterranean, boho vibe. Happy hour runs from 4-6 M-F, and includes various wine spritzes, beer, wine, and a couple of cocktails, such as their version of an espresso martini and an Old Fashioned. I love the spritzes. They're all flavorful, very well made, and huge. My favorite spritz is the Giardino, as it's the least sweet, but they're all tasty and strong (for a spritz). All of the drinks range between $6-8. They also have a few food items on the happy hour menu. I've tried the hummus & flatbread, the crispy chicken, and the tirokroketes. I am absolutely in love with the hummus and the delicious freshly made bread that it comes with. I'm not much of a bread person, but this flatbread is unbelievable. Food ranges between $6-10. Arrived minutes after happy hour began on a Friday and had the choice of any seat at the bar. We were bummed the rooftop bar was closed for a private event; one of our main reasons for going there. Within a half hour there wasn't an open seat at the bar! We tried all of the spritzes. The botanist was my favorite. None of them were too sweet. The food is exceptional and portions are generous for happy hour. We got the hummus & flatbread, tirokroketes, and crispy chicken briouat. The tirokroketes were the best and reminded me of friend mac and cheese bites. The hummus and flatbread were both great, especially the flatbread. I was not expecting Gypsy Kitchen to be as good as it was. Came 2 minutes before happy hour ended and they still allowed us to get happy hour menu. For a starter, we got the lebneh and hummus with pita. The hummus was the perfect texture, and my middle eastern friend said it was pretty good for a restaurant. The lebneh, also really nice. The garnishes added flavor to the already flavorful dip. HOWEVER, the first pita we got had some parts that were not fully cooked unfortunately. Did not want to bring it up to the server, but I do think they would have brought a fresh one instead. The pita was otherwise soft and thick but also evidently had zaatar and oil, it was wonderful despite the uncooked parts. Got a wine spritz that was fairly priced for happy hour and was nice to have with the food. The server was attentive and offered recommendations. As the main, we got the shank and it was tasty. Relatively juicy and salted well, I prefer a bit of tar on the top more than it had but that's just preference. It was very filling for 2 and delicious, no regrets. We had a group of 7 celebrating a 21st birthday. We shared 22 small plates, 2 Chefs Board and 6 desserts. And there were cocktails of course. The food was really good. But the bread that comes with the hummus/dips, topped with melted butter and garlic, is AMAZING. The biggest disappointment was our table and service. We chose this restaurant because of its patio seating. Instead of that beautiful spot perfect for our type of celebration, we were seated inside and next to the kitchen entrance. Our server also wasn't as attentive as we felt he should have been, however, he also looked to be working way too many tables, so maybe they were short-staffed. And later, after closer review of the receipt, it appears they charged us for an extra dessert that the server presented when acknowleding the birthday. Would we go back? A mega hot spot right on 14th! This is "tapas style" Mediterranean food. They recommend 2-4 small plates per person, and the large entrees are shareable too! We loved the seared halloumi, the risotto cauliflower, and the falafel. Super flavorful, traditional, and filling! We also got the green goddess salad, the beef kebab, and the hummus. 6 small plates had the three of us stuffed!! Keep in mind - this restaurant is extremely busy and extremely loud. I've brought my parents here and they had trouble hearing over the boisterous noise of customers, the rowdy streets with sirens and music, etc. However, the service is l excellent-from the host to the bidders to the waiters. The decor is captivating, the food is creative and flavorful, and the service was kind, prompt, and intentional! I went to a Gypsy in Kitchen to celebrate a birthday dinner we had a great time. All of the staff are so wonderful. All of the small plates we ordered were really good. My favorites were the Fried halloumi and the labneh, I highly recommend those two! The fried cauliflower is just OK in my opinion, but still good. It's a good dish to share with the group as it is on the larger side. The beef kebab has a really strong seasoning flavor, but still decent. I just don't know that I would order that again. The Patastas bravas are also really good! All of the sauce on top of the potatoes is really good. For dessert we got the baklava pie, which is definitely a modern take on baklava. No one at our table really enjoyed it. It was probably are least favorite item but the vanilla gelato on top was incredible. The other dessert we got was the Loukomades, the best way to describe that is a donut hole that's coded in sugar and cinnamon served with a vanilla cream sauce, which is heavenly I highly recommend the Loukomades if you're going to get a dessert. The service was quite quick after we ordered. Our small plates were coming out at a really fast pace, and our server knew the menu really well. Overall, the restaurant is very Instagramable, you can see I took a picture of the lightbulbs. It's a fun spot to go with friends. It's really central off of 14th St., close to other bars and restaurants. The vibe of gypsy kitchen is very cool and kind of hipster trendy. The rooftop is a great vibe. We ended up having to cancel our next two tapas though because at 10 til 8 we had to leave for a show. We arrived at 6:45 and we never actually interacted with our server. Instead, we flagged a bartender who took care of our order (and the couple next to us). He deserves a raise. He was clearly doing the work of two people, but it just wasn't enough to make up for the slow service in the end. Maybe just a bad night. I called about 30 minutes before we were ready to come here (it was 4:45) to see if they were busy. She said they didn't do walk-ins, so I made a reservation via OpenTable on their website. We got one no problem! First off, the menu on their website was different than the one in the restaurant, just be aware of that. They didn't have several items we were looking forward to. But they still had plenty of selections! The ambiance of this place is super cool and very Moroccan and Mediterranean inspired. Our waiter was lovely and attentive, though he did have some sales tactics when we were ordering that we didn't really appreciate. We ordered 2 kebabs and the hummus bil lahmb. Both of those dishes were absolutely wonderful! He pointed to the larger dishes when we were ordering to try and sway us to pay $30 more...nah. Didn't love that. I got about 2 tablespoons less of couscous than my husband did with his kebabs also. So, I think figuring out some portion nuances could be an improvement. Lastly we got the Basque cheesecake which honestly was just a huge mistake. It was the texture of cake, way too small for $9 and not enough flavor. Our waiter was again, friendly, but we felt a little rushed at the end of the meal, as he popped back when our CC wasn't in the bill holder yet, kind of inching us along to pay and leave. Overall the food here is great and I wish I could have tried a cocktail (wasn't willing to pay $16) and I would return. GK is one of the best places to meet up with friends in the city! I really appreciate that the hosts will seat guests when the full party isn't present yet. It makes it so easy to meet up with friends after work when we're all traveling from different places. The food is also amazing - I've been here countless times and the quality has never wavered. The small dishes make for a compelling way to connect with friends by sharing food, but they also serve large plates for those who aren't as interested in sharing. The scallops sit on top of a bed of mashed potatoes bathed in some sauces. It's mildly spicy. There's a layer of chopped asparagus and pickled beets that brings a nice texture. I also had the roasted broccolini. I've never had broccolini prepared this way before. This dish is mildly spicy probably from the chili oil. It sits on an entire bed of labneh. The crispy looking shreds is actually dehydrated egg. Overall, I had a great experience. The food is tasty and different. Before I moved to DC, I came to look for apartments, and my family decided to stop by Gypsy--and we were so pleasantly surprised. I'm a total sucker for a cute restaurant, and Gypsy definitely checked that box! The vibe was charming, and the concept of Middle Eastern tapas made the experience even more exciting. The music is not too loud, and gives it a club vibe. The staff is friendly and do a good job explaining the menu items, and the lay of the land for weekend brunches. The menu has some unique items. We had the Chef's Board, Falafel, Dirty Bravas, Kefta Burger, and Tunisian chicken sandwiches. All good choices and good quality items. I had the Tunisian chicken sandwich; it was very flavorful and moist. Normally, that would be heavy for me, but this one was not. I'd come back.
