We came here when happy hour started and it was great. Only the upstairs bar was open for happy hour but then the downstairs bar was open by the time we left at 5pm. We got the old fashioned, espresso martini and gypsy trio & flatbread. Both drinks were good and we loved the trio. The flatbread was great, well flavored and the spreads were good too. We had reservations and were able to take a seat as soon as we arrived though it wasn't packed. We sat in the back by the kitchen which has been my new favorite seat in the house where I can watch the line. This spot was the perfect nightcap to the 2-restaurant tour with this being the first spot. For the table, we had the Green Goddess, Hummus bil Lahme, Falafel and Crispy Cauliflower. Everything was spot on! Though, as I write this I now realize the cauliflower wasn't crispy, at least I don't remember it being crispy. The hummus may have been my favorite though. We had the Chef's Board, Falafel, Dirty Bravas, Kefta Burger, and Tunisian chicken sandwiches. All good choices and good quality items. While I am no longer a pescatarian, I do still lean toward veggie heavy meals and Gypsy Kitchen knows their veggies. Their Nomada cocktail is delicious-- rum, pineapple, banana, and lime. A little tropical but not too heavy. For food, I'm partial to their hummus and flatbread (this is some GOOD bread), crispy cauliflower, mushroom toast, seared halloumi (the kumquats give this the best tang), and the tirokroketes. I'm a huge fan of their happy hour, though it does get packed very quickly. Happy hour is both downstairs at the bar and upstairs on the rooftop. The upstairs space is exactly the same layout as Masa, but with cuter decorations. It definitely gives a Mediterranean, boho vibe. Happy hour runs from 4-6 M-F, and includes various wine spritzes, beer, wine, and a couple of cocktails, such as their version of an espresso martini and an Old Fashioned. I love the spritzes. They're all flavorful, very well made, and huge. My favorite spritz is the Giardino, as it's the least sweet, but they're all tasty and strong (for a spritz). All of the drinks range between $6-8. They also have a few food items on the happy hour menu. I've tried the hummus & flatbread, the crispy chicken, and the tirokroketes. I am absolutely in love with the hummus and the delicious freshly made bread that it comes with. I'm not much of a bread person, but this flatbread is unbelievable. Food ranges between $6-10. We also ordered some of their specialty drinks, which are about $15-20 each. Their dishes were good, but I was let down by the portion size. The cauliflower dish had at most 6 solid pieces of cauliflower to split amongst our group. For the price we paid, the portions were tiny. Arrived minutes after happy hour began on a Friday and had the choice of any seat at the bar. We were bummed the rooftop bar was closed for a private event; one of our main reasons for going there. For a starter, we got the lebneh and hummus with pita. The hummus was the perfect texture, and my middle eastern friend said it was pretty good for a restaurant. The lebneh, also really nice. The garnishes added flavor to the already flavorful dip. HOWEVER, the first pita we got had some parts that were not fully cooked unfortunately. Did not want to bring it up to the server, but I do think they would have brought a fresh one instead. The pita was otherwise soft and thick but also evidently had zaatar and oil, it was wonderful despite the uncooked parts. Got a wine spritz that was fairly priced for happy hour and was nice to have with the food. The server was attentive and offered recommendations. As the main, we got the shank and it was tasty. Relatively juicy and salted well, I prefer a bit of tar on the top more than it had but that's just preference. It was very filling for 2 and delicious, no regrets. The passionfruit cocktail La Murga looked like a cream circle, and was visually stunning, but the flavor was unexpected. Not that sweet as you would think. The Mediterranean tapas plates like fresh crispy, falafel spicy, and juicy lamb Kefta and a refreshing beet salad impressed both of us. We loved the seared halloumi, the risotto cauliflower, and the falafel. Super flavorful, traditional, and filling! We also got the green goddess salad, the beef kebab, and the hummus. 6 small plates had the three of us stuffed!! Keep in mind - this restaurant is extremely busy and extremely loud. I went to a Gypsy in Kitchen to celebrate a birthday dinner we had a great time. All of the staff are so wonderful. All of the small plates we ordered were really good. My favorites were the Fried halloumi and the labneh, I highly recommend those two! The fried cauliflower is just OK in my opinion, but still good. It's a good dish to share with the group as it is on the larger side. The beef kebab has a really strong seasoning flavor, but still decent. I just don't know that I would order that again. The Patastas bravas are also really good! All of the sauce on top of the potatoes is really good. For dessert we got the baklava pie, which is definitely a modern take on baklava. No one at our table really enjoyed it. It was probably are least favorite item but the vanilla gelato on top was incredible. The other dessert we got was the Loukomades, the best way to describe that is a donut hole that's coded in sugar and cinnamon served with a vanilla cream sauce, which is heavenly I highly recommend the Loukomades if you're going to get a dessert. The service was quite quick after we ordered. Our small plates were coming out at a really fast pace, and our server knew the menu really well. Overall, the restaurant is very Instagramable, you can see I took a picture of the lightbulbs. It's a fun spot to go with friends. It's really central off of 14th St., close to other bars and restaurants. The vibe of gypsy kitchen is very cool and kind of hipster trendy. The rooftop is a great vibe. I called about 30 minutes before we were ready to come here (it was 4:45) to see if they were busy. She said they didn't do walk-ins, so I made a reservation via OpenTable on their website. We got one no problem! First off, the menu on their website was different than the one in the restaurant, just be aware of that. They didn't have several items we were looking forward to. But they still had plenty of selections! The ambiance of this place is super cool and very Moroccan and Mediterranean inspired. Our waiter was lovely and attentive, though he did have some sales tactics when we were ordering that we didn't really appreciate. We ordered 2 kebabs and the hummus bil lahmb. Both of those dishes were absolutely wonderful! He pointed to the larger dishes when we were ordering to try and sway us to pay $30 more...nah. Didn't love that. I got about 2 tablespoons less of couscous than my husband did with his kebabs also. So, I think figuring out some portion nuances could be an improvement. Lastly we got the Basque cheesecake which honestly was just a huge mistake. It was the texture of cake, way too small for $9 and not enough flavor. Our waiter was again, friendly, but we felt a little rushed at the end of the meal, as he popped back when our CC wasn't in the bill holder yet, kind of inching us along to pay and leave. Overall the food here is great and I wish I could have tried a cocktail (wasn't willing to pay $16) and I would return. I had the Sombra y sol from the happy hour menu. It was refreshing and tasty. There's elderberry, white wine, and soda. Next up was the Seared Dayboat Scallops. The scallops sit on top of a bed of mashed potatoes bathed in some sauces. It's mildly spicy. There's a layer of chopped asparagus and pickled beets that brings a nice texture. I also had the roasted broccolini. I've never had broccolini prepared this way before. This dish is mildly spicy probably from the chili oil. It sits on an entire bed of labneh. The crispy looking shreds is actually dehydrated egg. Overall, I had a great experience. The food is tasty and different. Our absolute favorites were the Hummus bil Lahme (SO insane and comes with incredible flatbread) and the Mussels (comes with an entire loaf of bread and is a LOT of mussels so it's a good deal at $23 to be honest). They have one of the most underwhelming menu descriptions I've seen. They should probably get someone to re-write their menu descriptions. Every dish we ordered ended up served with a special sauce and pairings that highly enhances the taste. The half chicken was so tender and delicious and I can't get over how amazing the white sauce that came with it tasted. (We later found out from the waiter it's called "toum"). The crispy cauliflower was one of the best I've had. The couscous underneath the beef kebabs was soaked with the savory meats juices along with the flavorful seasonings. The flatbread served with the hummus was so tasty we had to order a second slice. (Which is an extra $3-7 charge I can't remember). The green goodness salad is refreshing and unique. The only item that I wasn't impressed with was the baklava cast iron pie from the desserts menu.
