Lots to enjoy here. Food is excellent and for tapas style the portion sizes lean in the large direction. Prices are very reasonable for DC and the quality. Loved the kefta lamb skewer. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. The piquillo tahini and sumac onions added more flavor punch. The hummus was exceptional. Strong tasty chickpea and garlic flavors balanced by lemon and dill. The pickled turnips presented in a flower shape was a nice touch. Service was excellent. Reservations via Open Table.

I only had the croquetas and they were SO GOOD! I sat at the bar and the service was fast and kind. The place's ambiance was nice and I'm excited to try more off the menu u next time. There will def be a next time for me for sure!

This is such a good place to eat with friends and have a catch-up! I came on a weeknight so it wasn't busy at all. The waiters were all wonderful and did not stop helping us. The food was some of the best tapas I have ever had. Literally everything was delicious and perfectly balanced with umami, tart, spice, sweet. My personal highlights were the mussels, croquettes, grilled kebab, jamon, hummus, and cheesecake. I also grabbed their purple gin drink and it was very yummy!

My girlfriends and I came in after visiting the Lip Lab nearby. Thankfully, they were open and had availability to accommodate us! The establishment is spacious, with plenty of seating, and I really loved the decor. The food was absolutely delicious, although I wasn't very familiar with traditional Romani cuisine. I ordered the steak and eggs, which came with meat, eggs, and breakfast potatoes, basically a full breakfast. My only complaint is that a lot of the other menu items didn't come with sides, and they didn't really offer an à la carte option to add something to complete my brunch. So, just keep that in mind when ordering. I honestly cannot remember the name of the drink I ordered, but it was so good that I got it twice! LOL. If you're in the area, most definitely check them out. The bathrooms were also nice and clean, and our waiter was excellent! Overall, we had a really good experience and I'd definitely come back.

Crispiest DC (Diet Coke) in DC!

Gypsy Kitchen is one of those places you can take anyone and everyone to have a great time and an even greater meal! One of my favorite tapas style spots in DC! Everything and when I say everything, is absolutely delicious! Some honorable mentions are the hummus, beef kebabs, and literally anything bread! Always so fresh and delicious, and the service/vibe is top tier for a good photo opp! PS: Crispiest Diet Coke in DC!!!!!

Changing it up, and venturing into DC, we decided to try Gypsy Kitchen--new for me. Overall, Gypsy Kitchen was good. We ordered drinks and a couple small plates. The hummus with pita and the shrimp fritters did not disappoint. The seasonal sangria was a great drink to start with. However, we ended the night with an espresso martini--learning that they make it with vodka, espresso flavored vodka, and simple syrup. The flavor of using the espresso vodka vs actual coffee/espresso wasn't what we were expecting. I don't know if it's the "vibe", but service was a little slow. I felt like we waited for the bartender to come back around to check on us.

Following a recent visit, my friend and I popped in following the pride parade and were able to snag two seats at the bar. The environment was very comfortable and service was great and quick. We had some great recommendations with the cocktails. I had the 50 shades of purple and it felt so festive. I shared the tuna crudo with a friend and we both loved it. It was so bright and vibrant, I could not get enough of the sauce, so delish! Following my prior review regarding a friend's allergy, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was now noted as an allergy on the menu. Awesome job by management!

We came here for happy hour. There is a bar downstairs and upstairs where they have it. The place interior is beautiful. There's an upstairs patio as well. The staff was great and fast. We ordered pretty much all of the drinks and food items. Everything was good. Our total bill was $295 which is a lot for $8 cocktails and $13 and under appetizers. They participate in the InKind app which means with a referral code you get $25 off. The app allows to split the bill. Great value, great atmosphere and amazing food and drinks.

We paid $130 with tip for croquettes, lamb skewers, tuna crudo, hummus, and two 50 Shades of Purple (drinks with butterfly pea gin). We sat outside on the patio and it was a gorgeous day. The decor is perfect and I love that they've added plants to cover the staircase. Drinks were delicious and the food came out quickly. Our water glasses were rarely empty. Service was kind. Food wise if I were to stack rank I would say the hummus is the best of what we ordered. The pita bread is thick and garlicky and oily and massive. The croquettes would be at the bottom of my list simply because they're dissimilar from any I've had before and a little bit underwhelming. The tuna was fresh but it's a small dish and not much to write home about. The lamb skewers have a subtle kick to them and they're pretty substantial. I'll definitely be back to try more! Highly recommend on a warm summer day as you're covered by the canopy above, if you're looking for a rooftop vibe.

Patatas bravas and mussels

We came to Gypsy Kitchen for our anniversary, and it was the perfect spot! The service was speedy and kind, and the decor/ambiance was beautiful. We ordered a bottle of the Cava, and four small plates, which was plenty of food. The mussels, labneh and Patatas bravas were all very generous portions. Labneh: 5/5, delicious, served with plenty of pita Patatas bravas: 5/5, with great flavor and crispy roasted potatoes Mussels: 4/5, generous portion size, and the sauce was very good but I wished the sauce was more white wine-based Tuna crudo: 5/5, not a ton of food but the flavor was absolutely delicious, very citrusy and fresh Labneh cheesecake: 4/5, served with a sauce that was a bit like cough syrup but otherwise absolutely delicious

Spanish Benedict -- So good !

Brunch !! We had a great time & enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant very much! We went on a day they werent very busy, so that was a plus, but our service could have been better. They forgot one of our benedicts & when it came out, it looked smaller than the other one. My main issue is that they promote that they have vegan options, but they really do not. The crispy cauliflower is about the only thing that is vegan on the menu. While I do occasionally eat meat, most everything had dairy in it & I have an allergy. We ordered: Crispy cauliflower-- 8/10 Spanish Benedict-- 9/10 Steak & Eggs-- 6/10 Lamb Hummus-- 10/10 Mimosa-- yum! Espresso Martini-- 8/10 Passionfruit Gin-- 8/10

Came to a short trip to DC with my family, was looking for a good happy hour not far from my hotel and was very excited about that place. But looked like I was expecting too much. Bartender was professional but not very friendly, and was not very happy serving happy hour menu, even mentioned that it's until 6:45 and not till seven like hostess confirmed. Humus and patadas bravas were ok, ambience was nice. But in this kind of place at least I expect very friendly and positive vibes from the staff and unfortunately it didn't happen.

I LOVE this place. My mom and I visited for the first time last Sunday for brunch and it was excellent! The ambiance is chic but casual. We got the Kefta burger, which was PHENOMENAL. We also got the crispy cauliflower - so unique but delicious!! Our server was very kind and helpful. We will definitely be back!

Ask the Community - Gypsy Kitchen DC

Are reservations required? would someone looking to come on a wednesday at 4 need to reserve a table or can we walk in?

I'll be in DC April 22-25th for a quick Spring break trip with 17 year old daughter + friend. It looks amazing for me but will a 17 year old appreciate the menu? If you think so, how can I book the rooftop for an ultimate experience?…

Depends on your daughter. If she likes Mediterranean food she should like it.

What's the price for one persons standard meal?

The average price per person, depending on drinks, is between $35-$45.

Is this a nut-free restaurant?

No, we are not. However, we do offer nut free menu options, and we can modify certain dish to be nut free.

Can you accommodate large parties with separate checks?

The short answer is Yes! We have an app, Sunday, where you can divide up your bill among your guest however you see fit. Nothing to download or signup for, just the ability to create as many separate checks as you need.

Can I order a tasting menu to experience a variety of dishes?

Verlaine: Although we do not have a specific tasting menu, we can create a special menu to meet your request. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss options.…

Is there a parking garage?

Street parking but no garage

Do they have bottomless mimosas?

No, I didn't see anything of the shirt in their menu when I went.

How do u go to the rooftop? Stairs or elevator?

There are stairs leading to the second floor and then the rooftop. You'll see the upon entry into the restaurant.

Are they checking vax cards?

Yes!

Is there covered outdoor seating and can you reserve outdoor seating?

Yes there is a covered patio I sat in on the second floor. I didn't reserve but the hostess asked if I wanted to sit outside.

Do they serve gluten-free options?

Yes, plenty! Lots of veggie and meats, and the restaurant will try to accommodate as best as they can.

Are pets allowed on the patio?

No pets allowed

Do they allow dogs?

I don't believe so

Is it halal?

I wouldn't think so, given that they serve pork.

I see some saying they went with family- would you say this place is kid friendly?

Its really according to what the kids eat. The food is a little rich. I haven't seen that many children anytime I've been.

Is dining available since its pandemic?

Indoor dining is available with limited capacity.

After having a full meal with cocktails, appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee (about $70 per person), I concluded that Atxondo will be a definite future destination for Happy Hour and light bites, but that my full meal dining dollars will be spent elsewhere. The Patatas Bravas (Fingerling Potatoes) were outstanding, with their two tasty sauces and rich, crispy flavor and texture. The Hibiscus Margarita with its salt and tajín rim was good enough to warrant a second one... but the Sangria was lackluster due to the complete absence of cut-up fresh fruit in my glass. The "Crispy Duck Breast" is no longer served whole, but sliced on a bed of sauteed kale... and, sadly, seemed to be only a shadow of its former self. The Lamb Meatballs suffered from being mushy (a coarser grind would have made a world of difference in the texture) and lacked that meaty exuberance one treasures in any kind of meatball. My serving of Basque Cheesecake was almost comically tiny (at $9 per serving, perhaps not so funny after all). But my cup of Americano came out of the espresso machine strapping strong and piping hot, with a gorgeous head of natural crema from the oil of the coffee beans. So I will definitely return for a future Happy Hour to devour the outstanding Patatas Bravas and sip the good Margaritas, and to try the bargain Manchego Burger and other Happy Hour bites. For serious dining, Atxondo falls short of the mark... but for drinks and bar food, Atxondo turns out to be a real neighborhood gem. .
