Absolutely wonderful food, good* service, great ambiance. This was our second time dining at Gypsy Kitchen, and the food never disappoints. Favorites: the Hummus bil Lahme, Crispy Cauliflower, Patatas Bravas (although I have to point out that they're NOT "crispy" in any sense), and the Croquettas. Not a fan of the griddled Halloumi, despite trying it on both visits: average at best. The Branzino and Lacquered Half Chicken are wonderful. *Now for the negative: when we ordered on this second visit, I asked our waiter if he'd course things out, and he assured us that that would be the case. Of course, everything came out all at once. And, naturally, it was a "computer problem". Come on, Gypsy Kitchen, get your act together. To their credit, they comped one of the small plates. I last reviewed this place on August 29, 2023. The food and service were excellent as before. But I'm downgrading to 4 stars because of their pricing practices. In my earlier review, I wrote, "The prices are what they are; no extra add-ons, special fees, etc. I get that costs have gone up for restaurants, but these should be directly incorporated in the menu prices, and here they are. I appreciate that." Unfortunately, management has decided to move away from a normal, transparent pricing model, and now adds a 3% surcharge to the menu prices. (There is a warning about this in tiny print on the menu.) This is BS. What next - a surcharge for increased air conditioning costs due to global warming? Your costs are your costs; just reflect them in your menu prices in the normal way, like every other business. Seeing that surcharge at the end made me feel tricked, and spoiled what was otherwise a very nice experience. Not a good way to end the evening. read more

It's so many things to like about DC Gypsy Kitchen that I'll just name a few. Started off downstairs at the cool bar. If I ever owned a restaurant, the bar would be a focal point. This one is damn near the length of the lower dining area.. LOVE IT! Because we were early for our reservation, let's drink and nibble on a lil sumthin at the bar!! The BBQ Salmon appetizer is a beast!! Simply delicious!! Next, my middle name should be "rooftop" since I love them so much.. Lol!! Let's go to the aforementioned rooftop for our entrées! Because DC Gypsy Kitchen is sitting on arguably the hottest street in the City (14th), you're going to get a lot of action. The people watching from up high is epic! Aside from the people watching, the food is GOOD. We had the spinach stuffed Bronzino and the Half chicken. The Bronzino was fantastic however the chicken had an interesting glaze that we weren't big fans of. The rooftop also has it's own nice sized bar if you want to chill up top to partake in your adult beverages! This is a great Spring/Summer spot that I can't wait to get back to once the DC weather breaks for the better. Located on the main stretch of downtown DC on 14th street, this tapas restaurant combines the tastes and feel of Spain, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco, Israel, and more. It's a warm setting with generous pillows, woven features, and colorful touches. My favorite area is the upstairs patio, where twinkle lights and a bright decorations give a fun, relaxing atmosphere. My favorite dishes there are the Salted Potatoes and the Chicken Kapama. The Chicken Kapama was extra cheesy and melted in your mouth. Awesome. Had reservations and requested the rooftop and they delivered! We had two rounds of hummus (the pita was THAT good), lots of drinks, some entrees, and the doughnuts. And we went through two servers (after asking to stay) and they accommodated that request today unlike many other restaurants that have the 2-hour wait limit without exceptions. I know that might not always be possible due to upcoming reservations, but they checked and weren't jerks about it! All drinks were delicious and the food was very tasty! I try to limit my reviews to once a year for each of our regular restaurants, but Gypsy Kitchen is such a great find for us! The thing that I love is that the restaurant has a youthful energy without unnecessary production value, which is an easy trap in the highly-competitive restaurant industry. Yet, on every visit Chef Eric has a nimbleness to offer something new and interesting, while being consistent where it counts. This is not an easy balance. For example, on our last visit, we had beet and lettuce roll as one of our early courses. (I would not have picked this on my own, but the texture and the mélange of spices were an amazing reveille for the rest of the meal. Also, we were really surprised by how smooth and delicate the salmon crudo tasted. For one of our main courses, the beef tenderloin was expertly prepared offering the right complementary balance with the garlic. They worked in harmony without one overpowering the other, which happens all too often. As always, I HAVE to give a shout out that the hummus never disappoints. I know this seems like a strange thing to praise, but it is some of the best hummus we've ever eaten IMHO. We have been fans of the hummus since our first visit. Service has always been fantastic and CONSISTENT. Once again, this is one of our greatest criticisms for so many restaurants (and other businesses) after the pandemic. We have always had a great service experience at Gypsy Kitchen, and on our last visit Julio made sure our meal moved at the right pace. We always had everything we needed to enjoy the experience without having to wait, wonder, or ask. This has been on my list for quite some time so I dragged a friend for an early dinner one afternoon. It was early and was pretty empty so we sat at the bar. Once inside I realized Masa 14 used to be in this space. The bartender got our drinks, put our order in and we didn't see her again for a while. In the meantime, we ordered an assortment of dishes to share: the Seared Halloumi, the Seared Dayboat Scallops, the Crispy Cauliflower, and the Lacquered Half Chicken. Each dish was delicious. The pine nuts on the cheese and the rice with the chicken were particularly tasty. The only thing I didn't care for was the cauliflower. I'd definitely return to try more menu items. Yes, as others have said, the bread that comes with it is amazingly soft, warm, and fresh. Mushroom Toast: 4/5. Umami! Another restaurant we frequent does this for a similar dish with thick bread, and it works well. Beef kebab: 4.5/5. Full of spices and flavor, would've liked a small side of bread or rice with it. Tirokroketes: 2/5. Lukewarm, thick and bland. Not sure what's the hype for this. Broccolini: 4.5/5. Very good. Scallops: 3.5/5. Nice chili oil, puree, and charring on the outside, but the pieces are so big so the ratio from char to soft and less interesting meat is low. Basque cheesecake: 3.5/5. Liked that the cheesecake itself wasn't overly sweet, but without the strawberry jam would've been quite bland. Service details: Would've liked the table wiped after dinner portion, at least one new set of plates for the 6 tapas we got. Service in general a little slow. Didn't appreciate that the Sunday payment app was the only way to pay and had to pay a small service fee for it, even after I asked for a credit card machine alternative. With good weather abounding during our early November stay in DC, we decided to hit this spot and dine out on the street seating they have available. Our server was a pleasure to work with, and she expertly guided us through the menu and offerings. Everyone ordered drinks, and we settled in to the menu to plan our family-style attack on the dishes we'd be sampling. Once we devised a plan, we ordered things in a phased manner so that we'd have "courses" to enjoy. As an appetizer, we started with the labneh and flatbread and then the mushroom toast. OMG...we could have eaten ten labneh it was that good topped with a za'atar seasoning blend! And those puffy breads were to die for. The mushroom toast was unctuous topped with goat cheese and a delicately poached egg and had the taste of real meat. Our main course consisted of salted potatoes, chicken kapama and beef kebab. The small-sized potatoes had a unique blend of sauces on top that gave them a rich taste. The chicken was fall-apart tender, sitting atop a bed of truffled orzo and was easy to share. The kebab was also easy to share with its cubed beef and couscous. Everyone raved with each new bite of these fantastic creations. Leaving just enough room for dessert, the table split both a loukoumades and a "burnt" Basque cheesecake...a great way to complete our gastronomical adventure! I also preferred the vibes downstairs more - everything was just more lively. We started off with the lamb hummus and naan. Our group then shared the duck, chicken, broccolini, beet salad (a special), beef kebab, and tuna crudo. Some of my favorites included 1) the tuna crudo; the spicy red pepper was a nice kick to the dish and 2) the beet salad was a surprising, but very lovely addition, with its freshness and well-balanced flavors. Went in on a Friday evening, had to find street parking a little further out given how crowded this area is. It was personally my first time, but the person I was with has been there multiple times and spoken quite highly of it. Ordered a bunch of apps instead of bigger dishes to get a good variety of dishes. The mains of the menu could use some more vegetarian variety, but the apps have a ton. I believe the menu is seasonal. Ordered the labneh, cauliflowerand tirokroketes. Labneh (strained yogurt) comes with this fluffy flatbread that has seasonings on top. This labneh had a very cream cheese like texture with beans and a little flavor kick after it. Loved it and know it's a popular item to get on the menu. Crispy Cauliflower - the combination of flavors were good, but the cauliflower pieces itself were okay. What gives it the flavor is the dried fruit relish and tahini sauce. The capers detracted from the taste of this dish.It was a good try given the combination of items, but don't know if I'd order again given the cauliflower itself and the capers. The tirokroketes come with 4 balls that are like croquets with cheeses. They come in this beautiful sauce thats a romenesco/pepper with great seasonings. It has a bit of a sweetness to it. Other notable recs from a seasoned visitor, but did not order on this visit: beef kebab and main entree - steaks. Ambiance is excellent there's an outdoor-esque area that they provide heating for, but both upstairs and downstairs are great. if you're looking for more intimate personally recommend upstairs as downstairs has a lot more people. Staff was kind overall and especially the hosts at the front started and ended off the experience on an enjoyable note. Bathrooms were a little worn, but cute tiling. I've been here twice and had two very different experiences. First time I came for Sunday brunch. The restaurant was reasonably packed but the service and food were not it. We got the crispy cauliflower given it's highly recommended on Yelp, the portion was huge but the batter was very thick and lacked flavor. The egg dish was okay but came kind of lukewarm. The hot chicken sandwich though was fantastic - nicely fried to crispy, with a delicious tangy sauce and slaw. It seemed like our server was having an off day. They kept adding water to my iced coffee and I had to get it replaced twice. After the disappointing first time, I didn't come back for a long while. But I kept hearing nice things about their dinner service so decided to give it another try. And it turned out to be amazing. The place again was packed during Friday dinner time but our server was very welcoming and attentive. Love love the Canela y Sol. Get the bread with literally anything, hummus or labneh, so good we had to get another one. The beef kebab was cooked nicely medium rare, very nicely seasoned, and came with a delicious curried couscous. Very cool place with a nice ambiance for a date night or dinner with a small-medium group of friends. Fast and friendly service with good food. I was hoping to be more blown away by the food, as I tried a couple of bites last year and was super excited to come back for a full dinner. But they didn't have the carrots nor the shrimp that I got last time -- seems like they rotate the menu a decent amount which is fun -- but maybe we just didn't get the best of it this time around. The food was good but probably 4 stars. The pita and hummus - can't be beat. So so good. We got the hummus bil lahme (with lamb) and ordered an extra pita so we could finish it all. The fried halloumi - really good flavor and overall dish, but it could have been crispier on the outside. That's all that was really missing. Fried cauliflower - was good but nothing memorable. Probably should've gone for falafel here. Beef kebab - We wanted some more meat to fill me up but this was decent at best. A couple pieces were overcooked and overall it tasted like a kebab you could get at any middle eastern fast casual spot, nothing special. The desserts - we had the fried donuts (loukomades) but there was way too much cardamom so that's all we were tasting. Not sure if that's how it's intended authentically but even as Indian's, just wasn't our favorite! We also tried the baklava cast iron which was really good, but they were out of ice cream, which was super disappointing. The main reason I ordered it was to have a warm baklava a la mode, and the waiter acknowledged he didn't know they were out of ice cream and comped the dessert which was a nice gesture. Overall, probably give this an 8/10 experience, but the food maybe a 7/10. Really enjoyed the ambiance and our server was really nice, but maybe we need to come back for happy hour or when the menu rotates. Okay, was in DC and walked over to this place. Stepped into a welcoming vibe. The place has character. It was described elsewhere as Bohemian, so guess I was expecting wicker and incense, but nope, upbeat music, a huge bar and modern decor set the mood. But wait, the flatbread and hummus was "slap yo momma" good. The bread was light, fluffy, delicately seasoned and melted in my mouth. The hummus had perfect texture and blend of seasonings. I don't even eat bread like that, but I put that dish away. The cauliflower was interesting. Not bad, but interesting. There was a full situation happening that threw me a bit. Everyone does cauliflower these days, so better can be found. They do quite a lot with the broccolini compared to most places. On a bed of labneh with grated dehydrated eggs reminiscent of potato strips. Definitely worth a try if you want something other than roasted with sea salt. The piece de resistance was the half chicken. So tender that the meat fell off the bone. But for me it was the rice. When getting protein in a bed of rice, the rice is often a throw away, but they got the rice right!! The chicken was really good, but the spicy rice pilaf was excellent. They could make the dish less expensive by removing the rice accompaniment (labneh again?), but that's probably a matter of taste. As a rice fanatic, I prefer my rice alone. Every, single, dish was DELICIOUS!!! The aesthetic of this place was gorgeous. Plants everywhere and it was a very cozy, cute atmosphere. The pita bread that came with the hummus was amazing. We ordered so many dishes that it makes it hard to list out any favorites because they all were really that great. From salads, to meats, to falafel, to breads, to dessert, they all were so unique and flavorful. You can tell that the chef really took the time to make each dish a great one. We started with the hummus bil lahme and labneh which both came with flatbread. The hummus bil lahme was delicious and so flavorful! Also the flatbread given was freshly made and delicious as well. For entrees I got the beef kabobs and two other people at our table split the half chicken. The beef kabob was so delicious and well cooked. It came with couscous as well which was good. I've been here twice and feel confident in my rating. I'll start with things I do enjoy about gypsy kitchen: - the staff has been great both times. First time I was there with a large group, second time, smaller group and there was no difference in service. - the place is very cute. Ambience is top notch (can get a little loud during dinner, but not problematic) - the flatbread!!! It's the best thing on the menu. I would in fact go back just for the flat bread and hummus dishes. Other than the three items above, the other food options were very average (and we tried a good amount of the menu), hence the 3 stars. I would absolutely pop in for a the flat bread and a cocktail, but probably not for much more than that. read more
