I want to preface that our server was amazing and the apps were pretty tasty. However, I am giving it a one star because of how I was treated with my psychiatric service dog. I'm not sure if it was the owner or the manager on Saturday (11/25/24) @5:00PM, but I was asked to sit somewhere else due to my dog. I told him he legally couldn't move me somewhere else based on the Federal ADA laws, unless my dog was being disruptive...which he wasn't. He was laying in my lap working because I was having a huge panic attack during this interaction.Then he started saying I needed to show proof that my dog was a service dog, which if you look at the Federal ADA laws the only things you should ask someone who has a service dog is (1) is your dog a service dog and (2) what tasks does the service dog perform for your disabilities. Please educate your restaurant and staff the Federal ADA guidelines before making the process of someone who has a hidden disability going out more difficult and more stressful than it should be....I hope this is a learning moment and you change how you approach people with service dogs. read more

It's strange to say but the best thing we ordered was the Hummus. It was packed with flavor and complimented well with the hot and buttery flatbread. The tuna hibbeh and shakshouka did not look very appetizing and in turn was so-so when it came to flavor. We probably would not recommending order that as everything just came out mushy. I would call this restaurant a sweet jewel in the heart of DC. The food was super tasty and was freshly made! This is a very typical tapas style Mediterranean restaurant but the portion sizes are pretty good. Special mention to to the ciabatta bread because we didn't even realise when we ate it. The crispy cauliflower was well plated with a nicely battered cauliflower ball. I thought it was a knish. The light taste along with the tahini counterbalanced by the fruity fig relish just made me want to order more, although the charred rapini was yummy, i could. Not really taste the man ego. I was invited out by a gf to attend Gypsy's anniversary. It was a $100 all you can eat and drink event. I was mostly satisfied by the options but there could've been improvements that would've put the experience over the top and made me feel like I got the best bang for my buck. From an accommodation perspective, they really dropped the ball in not setting up cocktail tables for guests to eat and drink at. Once all the limited seating on the patio was taken, there was no where for you to comfortably eat where you weren't in the way of other guests trying to grab a bite or drink (by the bar or seafood station). There was a seafood station with a couple options in constant rotation. There was also a charcuterie station as well. These small bites were delicious, my favorite items was the assortment of meats and the oysters and salmon. There was also a few food items passed around by a couple servers. They had vegetarian options in swing which was thoughtful. My only complaint was the infrequency of the food being passed around. Of all the small bites passed around, the mushroom bite was absolutely delicious! It was so savory, buttery, and worth every bite. There was also a huge pot of paella that was cooked outdoors in a huge pot! The chef added chickpeas and broccoli to the dish, I originally side eyed that addition since I'm especially not a chickpea eating gal but overall it was a decent dish. There was a few burnt pieces within but it didn't ruin the dish. I've been eyeing this restaurant for a while now (I've got it bookmarked) so I plan to come back for a full dine in experience. After hearing so much talk about Gypsy Kitchen over the years I finally decided to give it a try and now realized I've been missing out for so long. Planned a large dinner here with my friends and we ordered a variety of things tapas style. Not a single dish wasn't superb in presentation and taste. Everything came out super quick and I think the garlic bread, scallops and hummus were some of my favorites. I feel like with a place like Gypsy Kitchen, in a central dc location and beautiful interior, it's easy to focus more on ambiance and drinks than the sheer food quality. However, gypsy kitchen really stays true to providing the highest quality food and remarkable service. Upon walking in, the staff was extremely accommodating. We got drinks at the bar before our table was ready (about 5 minutes- not bad at all-we had a reservation on a busy saturday night). The atmosphere was beautiful! Decorations were very nice and the restaurant itself wasn't too loud at all- we could have a conversations without screaming like other dc restaurants, so that was a nice change. The highlight of it all was the food! We were AMAZED at the flavor of each dish. The hummus alone blew my socks iff and the pita it came with, for sure, was the BEST pita i've ever had in my life! Crispy but the cauliflower were large. The flavors were good. 3. Mushroom flatbread - The bread is thick like focaccia. The mushroom was good and plentiful but it was not very flavorful. 4. Bronzino - Charred taste. Very good! Lots of meat on this one. Would definitely get this again. Be careful of small bones. 5. Ribeye - Not that salty. Good medium when cooked. It could use a bit more flavor. It was nice to come with shishito peppers. 6. Deja Vu cocktail - Good and herby! Overall a good place to come with lots of different flavors. Back at our favorite restaurant, we started by ordering our favorite, must-have dishes and some new ones: 5*Hummus bil Lahme--roasted lamb shoulder, pine nuts, currents, radish: the lamb was tender and delicious. Adding dill was daring and creative, which gave the dish a unique flavor. 4.5*Labneh & Flatbread--dill oil, charred pole beans, and za'atar: the flatbread was so fresh and delicious, I could eat it without the sauce. 4.5*Tirokroketes--crisp cheese, romesco, greek honey, pickled peppers: 4 fried cheese croquettes, even though they were fried, they didn't feel too greasy or fattening. The sauce was a combination of sweet and spicy: very good! 4*Salmon Crudo--shiro yogurt, chili oil, dried olive, and cucumber: salmon was raw and fresh. It's an interesting dish. If we had known the salmon was raw, we probably wouldn't have ordered it. 4.5*Chicken Kapama--urfa youvetsi, spinach, and crispy potato: the chicken was very tender and tasty. It was a bit on the salty side compared with other dishes. 4*Burrata-- an Italian cow milk cheese made from mozzarella and cream. It included watercress, citrus supremes, pickled onion, walnut dukkah, grilled ciabatta: Burrata was good, but we had it better. 3*Milk Stout Cake--with cashew-chocolate, malted stout cream, and vanilla gelato: light and not too sweet. It was okay, not great. 1*Loukoumades--fried dough with honey, pistachio, and vanilla cream. I don't know how it got on the menu: bland and plain with so many empty calories. It's a bummer. Far below the dessert standard Gypsy usually offers. Maybe it was served as a stopgap for frequently changed menu. It lacked creativity, imagination and taste. DO NOT ORDER this dessert. It ruined the whole meal. Desserts on the new menu was a disappointment, but I don't want to lower the rating yet. Overall it's still an excellent restaurant with a great package of delicious food at reasonable prices. There was no host when we arrived so we found our way to the bar. We then waited about 15 minutes for a glass of wine. Not to worry, we had water. Unfortunately, the water tasted really funny. The best hummus I've had in DC! Gypsy Kitchen mixes Spanish tapas style dining with middle eastern flavors. Everything we ate was delicious, although a few items could have been improved. We ordered the charred rapini, lamb burger, tirokroketes, and the hummus bil lahme (hummus with lamb). Everything was delicious. The charred rapini was excellent - grilled really nicely and served with a delicious cured egg yolk manchego sauce. Nothing to improve on that item. The hummus was incredible, but I would order it next time without the lamb (which is an option). The lamb didn't really do anything for that hummus. The burger was really delicious but the lamb patty seemed to fall apart too much - it needed a binding element mixed into the meat. The tirokroketes (croquettes with a gooey cheese filling) was delicious but it was served cold and clearly had been made well in advance of our order. Great atmosphere and service. A very nice place for an intimate date night or a fun outing with a few people. The design evokes the pan-middle eastern cuisine they serve. I do however think the restaurant would benefit a lot by removing one or two of their two-person tables. The tables are a little too crammed in. Came here in early December with a group of four and I was really looking forward to dining here based on all the beautiful pictures from the website. Gypsy Kitchen was also featured on YelpDC's Instagram so it's hip! We actually arrived early and were seated immediately upstairs at the high tables by the bar. Truth be told, it wasn't super comfortable for us because the club- type music was so loud and we could barely hear each other. The table was also too small for a group our size. I know my girl friend agreed as we wished we were seated adjacent at a quieter table at the outside patio with the pillows. We adjusted though and being in a group, got lots of great, small plates. They were delicious most notably the Beef Kabab. Crispy cauliflower was ordered as was the Hummus and flatbread. I think we came too hungry lol but just got dessert instead of the large plates. I recently visited Gypsy Kitchen on a Monday evening and was pleasantly surprised to see it had a rather decent crowd. Most of the tables were full and as the evening went on it was packed... always a good sign for what's to come! We decided to sit upstairs at the bar, rather than at the table downstairs. The host told us the bar area was really nice and plus it gave us the opportunity to get a glimpse of the rooftop views (even at night.. in the dark.. in the winter.. it was promising!). With the recommendation of the bartender, we ordered several small plates to share. Obviously their hummus and flatbread is delicious, but my favorite dish was probably the Gambas (shrimp). We also really enjoyed the beef kebab and the potatoes.
