Went to Gypsy Kitchen for a light meal and some drinks on Friday and had a good experience overall. We ordered soon after we were seated and were happy with how prompt and efficient the service was. We ordered La Murga, a tequila based drink, and the vodka based Atrevete. The Murga was good but I thought that the Atrevete was somewhat too weak and seemed more like an attempt at a vodka mojito than a stand out drink. For our meal, we ordered the Aleppo Spiced Fried Chicken to start. This was one of the better fried chicken thighs I've had in DC; the coating was perfectly crispy and the meat was tender. I didn't appreciate that it was served on top of the tzatzik, rather than on the side; if it is going to be served on top, it should be specifically labeled as such on the menu. The Crispy Cauliflower was also quite good. Served with tahini on the side, this dish was a good contrast to the fried chicken the tahini also offered a good opportunity for dipping once we got the bread. The bread was a treat; perfectly light but still moist and chewy. We also got the scallops, which were definitely interesting but somehow not very memorable. Expect prices to be higher, overall, than at other restaurants but this is predictable given the target audience and location. This place has some of the best tapas I have ever had. Yes it's a little pricey, but you're getting some above average sized tapas as well. My personal favorite was the lamb and green goddess salad. Upon my arrival in DC, I found this place doing a Google search for a place to dine near my hotel. The name piqued my interested, so I looked it up and was determined to try it, looking at the photos of what appeared to be fabulous food. Go there I did, and it was. Amazing! Even though many reviewers feature the half=chicken, I thought my best strategy was to try many small dishes. Besik (aka "Basil") was delightful, incredibly helpful and informative. My top favorite was the smoked duck breast prosciutto. It was twelve-times more wonderful than I imagined--and that was a lot! It was served with stone ground mustard, but I wanted to sample it naked first. I loved it so much that only quantity of slices persuaded me to try it with the mustard. I am so glad because I loved it equally, just differently. My second favorite was the Green Goddess salad. Might not sound like a big deal, but it was fantastic. So fresh and lovely with the vegetable choices, and it was deliciously, but lightly dressed. Coming in third was the incredible labneh topped with sliced dill feathery tops and stems, mint and I'm-not-sure-what-else, but wonderful, and accompanied by a perfect flatbread with toasted seeds a top. Fourth was the lovely feta drizzled with honey. The drinks were incredible, and I'll forever more look to find drinks that will benefit from a cinnamon stick. read more

This is my first time trying tapas, and the plates we ordered were seriously all delicious! The waitress checked up on us multiple times to make sure that we had everything we wanted. Hummus bil Lahme: This is hummus with roasted lamb shoulder, pine nuts, currants, and radish. The flavorful lamb shoulder paired well with the hummus and pita bread. I recommend getting this. Beet Kibbeh Nayeh: Gorgeous presentation, but there was nothing really spectacular about the taste. The wine pickled beets are finely chopped with a little bit of bulgar (grains) and mint. Mushroom Toast: My favorite dish! Grilled mushrooms with whipped goat cheese and an egg cooked in a 63 degrees water bath. This is a poached egg where the egg white is slightly translucent but still cooked and the egg is runny, creating an even creamier sauce for the toast. The mushrooms had a lovely bite to them but were still cooked with a burst of flavor. Whole Bronzini: Bronzini is a Mediterranean sea bass with a mild and slightly sweet taste. For this dish, it was stuffed with spinach, cashew tahini, and lemon yogurt, so there was a slight tartness to it. It was a delicious fish, but the small plates attracted me more! Note that, because this is a whole fish, there are bones. Gambas: There were about 3 or so pieces of shrimp in a cherry tomato creamy sauce with a piece of bread. We ended up ordering too much food for 2 people, so we had packed this dish to-go. Itsy Bitsy Spider: A pineapple-mango ginger beer with a touch of lime and spices. This is a carbonated drink with an interesting combination of flavors. This is a fantastic date night location and just a great restaurant to explore. Parking is absolutely atrocious in this area, so I recommend taking an Uber or public transportation. I'm so glad we decided to come here. We even had a late 9:30pm reservation. I've found at other places that usually meant bad food or bad customer service, but they out did themselves that night! Gypsy Kitchen is located on the busy 14th street, and I finally got a chance to stop by with a friend after making a reservation. The interior is really spacious with ample seating options. There's also an outdoor rooftop seating area, and this is where we opted to seat on a slightly breezy summer evening; it's really gorgeous! The food options mainly consisted of small plates, with many things to try, so we decided to order the plates in about 3 options at a time. There were a few normal sized plate options though, but we stuck to the small plates. They also have a brunch menu, but I am not aware of any hh options at this time. I started with the Can I kick it? cocktail, which consisted of vodka, lychee, and passion fruit--at first I thought that it wasn't sweet enough, but after I got past most of the purple part of the drink a strong sweet taste came straight to my tastebuds! The drink size was also pretty generous! For small plates, we ordered: smoked duck prosciutto, crispy chicken briouat, Bert kibbeh nayat, crispy cauliflower, hummus and flatbread. Favorites: were the crispy chicken and the hummus/flatbread. The crispy chicken was very well seasoned, and it came with an amazing tomato jam, I couldn't get enough of it!! The hummus tasted soooo fresh, and the flatbread was so warm and soft; ensure to order these dishes! The crispy cauliflower and the smoked duck prosciutto were strong runner ups! The cauliflower texture was amazing and you had to cut into it from a crispy exterior, and it was complemented with a raisin sauce. The smoked duck was cured with orange and Turkish coffee and tasted fresh! The staff and service was excellent! In the middle of our reservation it started to storm badly, which led to some rain trickling into our table since we were out on the rooftop (the top is mostly covered but the sides are open). Our waiter and the manager were very proactive in finding us a new table indoors and replaced out plates, silverware and water (We held on to our food to preserve them). We were also attended to and checked in roughly every 15 minutes during our reservation, which I thought was amazing, especially during a busy weekday evening. I ordered 5 small dishes and 1 large. The only good items were the hummus and the kefta. The bread paired with the hummus was also great as well. The octopus was delicious, but the potato chips it came with were drowned in paprika, and tasted burnt from how long the chips were fried. The falafel was burnt to a crisp, and lacked the soft inside texture. The mushroom dish was completely overpowered by sourness and acidity. The large lamb dish was cooked well, but unfortunately completely lacked any flavor besides the normal gaminess of the lamb. I normally never leave leftovers for any meat dish, but I couldn't stomach the rest of the bland lamb. The portion sizes were enough for 4 to share and still enjoy it and feel full after multiple. Some of our favs were the crispy cauliflower and the beef skewers (such good flavor on this). I appreciate how accommodating the team was and they went above and beyond to make sure we were having a good experience. The hummus and flatbread was amazing. There is so much flavor in both items. The Hummus bil Lahme was a table favorite and my friend couldn't stop saying how tasty and tender the lamb was. The Chicken Kapama was a perfect dish for the season, with it being so cold outside, this dish warms you inside out. The mushroom toast was really good and filling. The Gambas was tasty as well with large shrimp. It isn't mentioned on the menu but the Gambas includes pork on the toast - my friend doesn't eat pork and was thrown off. The broth and everything was really good. The Lacquered Half Chicken had a sweetness to it that went really well with the spicy pilaf and pickles. They ran out of rockfish so red snapper was the Grilled Market Fish entree. The dashi broth was savory and I liked that came on the side to add as much or as little as desired. Although we had many rounds of the il Peccatore, we had to try some desserts. The cheesecake tasted freshly made, smooth and creamy. Sat at the bar at the end of happy hour. The food and ambiance were great, but the service was not good. We had to wave down the two bartenders, who focused their time and energy on the server (who was standing in the service station) and their friends who were sitting at the bar, instead of any of the other bar customers down the full length of the bar during a slow happy hour (there were 2-3 other groups who also struggled to get the bartenders' attention too). We had to ask twice for my drink, wave down a bartender to order more food, and I even had to ask for a water glass at the end because neither bartender realized the other hadn't given me one (maybe they would have if they chose to pay any attention to the rest of their bar). We asked for the check and just gave one of them our credit cards immediately because we didn't have more time to wait for them. I know good help is hard to find right now, but this was my first and likely last time at Gypsy Kitchen. There are plenty of places where bartenders actually understand that to sell food and drink, you have to actually provide service to customers. I shouldn't have to wave down a bartender, especially when there are two on, to get basic service needs met. read more

Great place for some vegan food. A bit bland for my taste, but the presentation was nice. We ordered various dishes such as the fried chicken, gazpacho, 2 salads, and more. The Gambas and lamb were yummy as well. Surprisingly, a cocktail with 3 dishes to share with one person left me quite satisfied. The ambiance was warm and romantic and our server Terrance (I think that's his name) was great! And for those with little ones, they do have high chairs but the space is a bit tight for strollers. read more
