Brunch on 14th street in DC is often crowded and expensive, and that's if you can find a restaurant without an hour wait. However, this was not the case at Gypsy Kitchen! We sat on the roof, which was beautifully decorated. Although I would recommend getting a reservation, there was plenty of open seating at noon on a Saturday. I got the open faced omelette, which had mushrooms, seasonal vegetables, and labneh. All the flavors worked together extremely well; I especially loved the sauce on the mushrooms, which lent a nice umami flavor to the dish. The service was extremely attentive, and our waiter was very helpful with giving us recommendations and walking us through the menu. This is a great restaurant for a group who likes to share and try different things! About half the menu is small plates, which they recommend about 2 per person. Prices were very reasonable in my opinion, especially for this area (almost all the large plates were $14-16). I will definitely be back to try more items off the brunch menu!! read more

This is my first time trying tapas, and the plates we ordered were seriously all delicious! The waitress checked up on us multiple times to make sure that we had everything we wanted. Hummus bil Lahme: This is hummus with roasted lamb shoulder, pine nuts, currants, and radish. The flavorful lamb shoulder paired well with the hummus and pita bread. I recommend getting this. Beet Kibbeh Nayeh: Gorgeous presentation, but there was nothing really spectacular about the taste. The wine pickled beets are finely chopped with a little bit of bulgar (grains) and mint. Mushroom Toast: My favorite dish! Grilled mushrooms with whipped goat cheese and an egg cooked in a 63 degrees water bath. This is a poached egg where the egg white is slightly translucent but still cooked and the egg is runny, creating an even creamier sauce for the toast. The mushrooms had a lovely bite to them but were still cooked with a burst of flavor. Whole Bronzini: Bronzini is a Mediterranean sea bass with a mild and slightly sweet taste. For this dish, it was stuffed with spinach, cashew tahini, and lemon yogurt, so there was a slight tartness to it. It was a delicious fish, but the small plates attracted me more! Note that, because this is a whole fish, there are bones. Gambas: There were about 3 or so pieces of shrimp in a cherry tomato creamy sauce with a piece of bread. We ended up ordering too much food for 2 people, so we had packed this dish to-go. Itsy Bitsy Spider: A pineapple-mango ginger beer with a touch of lime and spices. This is a carbonated drink with an interesting combination of flavors. This is a fantastic date night location and just a great restaurant to explore. Parking is absolutely atrocious in this area, so I recommend taking an Uber or public transportation. I spent nearly an hour finding parking since a lot of the street parking involved zone permit and the public parking were packed on a Saturday night. read more

This place is amazing! The ambiance is soothing. The food is INCREDIBLE!! Its Mediterranean fusion tapas. With our party of 6 we got to try much of the menu- cheese and meat board, prawns, hummus, falafel, mushroom toast, beef kabab, fried chicken, and tuna. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in DC! Every time people are visiting from out of town, this is a must try. We order everything to share since it's a Mediterranean tapas fusion. We love (and order every time we go) the lamb hummus, tirokroketes, Aleppo spiced fried chicken, beef kebab and the crispy cauliflower. Where do I begin! My experience here was incredible!!! From start to finish, we were met with outstanding customer service and even better food! Loved every minute here! Gypsy Kitchen is located on the busy 14th street, and I finally got a chance to stop by with a friend after making a reservation. The interior is really spacious with ample seating options. There's also an outdoor rooftop seating area, and this is where we opted to seat on a slightly breezy summer evening; it's really gorgeous! The food options mainly consisted of small plates, with many things to try, so we decided to order the plates in about 3 options at a time. There were a few normal sized plate options though, but we stuck to the small plates. They also have a brunch menu, but I am not aware of any hh options at this time. I started with the Can I kick it? cocktail, which consisted of vodka, lychee, and passion fruit--at first I thought that it wasn't sweet enough, but after I got past most of the purple part of the drink a strong sweet taste came straight to my tastebuds! The drink size was also pretty generous! For small plates, we ordered: smoked duck prosciutto, crispy chicken briouat, Bert kibbeh nayat, crispy cauliflower, hummus and flatbread. Favorites: were the crispy chicken and the hummus/flatbread. The crispy chicken was very well seasoned, and it came with an amazing tomato jam, I couldn't get enough of it!! The hummus tasted soooo fresh, and the flatbread was so warm and soft; ensure to order these dishes! The crispy cauliflower and the smoked duck prosciutto were strong runner ups! The cauliflower texture was amazing and you had to cut into it from a crispy exterior, and it was complemented with a raisin sauce. The smoked duck was cured with orange and Turkish coffee and tasted fresh! The staff and service was excellent! In the middle of our reservation it started to storm badly, which led to some rain trickling into our table since we were out on the rooftop (the top is mostly covered but the sides are open). Our waiter and the manager were very proactive in finding us a new table indoors and replaced out plates, silverware and water (We held on to our food to preserve them). We were also attended to and checked in roughly every 15 minutes during our reservation, which I thought was amazing, especially during a busy weekday evening. Interior of the restaurant is fun, modern and the food totally compliments the vibes. Literally everything we ordered was delicious. The Hummus bil Lahme was delicious. Basically Hummus perfected with lamb atop. We had 2 orders, it was so good. Also, the bread they compliment the hummus with is served piping hot! It's crunchy, buttery, flaky and just pairs well overall... My ultimate fave was the Grilled Flat Iron. I'm still curious what the tangy blend was in the couscous. I had no idea there were different sizes of couscous and the steak was a delight. Cooked Medium and just a burst of flavors. This is a Must try! Last, we ordered Charred Rapini. At 1st glance it looks like a bed of vegetables but a 1st bite reveals a burst of flavors and the smokiness of the char. We cleared the plate...Don't judge a book by its cover here. Gypsy Kitchen gets a solid A+ from me and my only wish is to return when it's warmed to truly experience the full rooftop dining experience! I recently visited Gypsy Kitchen on a Monday evening and was pleasantly surprised to see it had a rather decent crowd. Most of the tables were full and as the evening went on it was packed... always a good sign for what's to come! We decided to sit upstairs at the bar, rather than at the table downstairs. The host told us the bar area was really nice and plus it gave us the opportunity to get a glimpse of the rooftop views (even at night.. in the dark.. in the winter.. it was promising!). With the recommendation of the bartender, we ordered several small plates to share. Obviously their hummus and flatbread is delicious, but my favorite dish was probably the Gambas (shrimp). We also really enjoyed the beef kebab and the potatoes. I cant recall the name of the cocktail I ordered (I think it was the La Murga) but it was also really good and paired well with the food options. Service was good. Food was good. Ambiance was good. Went to Gypsy Kitchen for a light meal and some drinks on Friday and had a good experience overall. We ordered soon after we were seated and were happy with how prompt and efficient the service was. We ordered La Murga, a tequila based drink, and the vodka based Atrevete. The Murga was good but I thought that the Atrevete was somewhat too weak and seemed more like an attempt at a vodka mojito than a stand out drink. For our meal, we ordered the Aleppo Spiced Fried Chicken to start. This was one of the better fried chicken thighs I've had in DC; the coating was perfectly crispy and the meat was tender. I didn't appreciate that it was served on top of the tzatzik, rather than on the side; if it is going to be served on top, it should be specifically labeled as such on the menu. The Crispy Cauliflower was also quite good. Served with tahini on the side, this dish was a good contrast to the fried chicken the tahini also offered a good opportunity for dipping once we got the bread. The bread was a treat; perfectly light but still moist and chewy. We also got the scallops, which were definitely interesting but somehow not very memorable. Expect prices to be higher, overall, than at other restaurants but this is predictable given the target audience and location. Last night ventured out to Gypsy Kitchen in DC. I remember going to this place years ago for a party but I didn't get to eat the food. We made a reservation for last night for dinner. It is a mesh on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. Majority of the menu specializes in small plates but honestly some are full dishes! We ordered Lebanese and Greek wine for the table then ordered Crispy Califlower, Crispy chicken rolls, hummus with lamb, beef kabob and apple salad. The flavors did take me back to the Mediterranean. I would definitely be going back. If you decide to go order the cauliflower without the breading it comes with a bacon jam and charred The beef kabob comes with couscous. The Crispy chicken rolls is ground chicken with Spices with a serving jam that is tasty. The apple salad is a great refreshing palette cleanser. Plates-a-palooza! A very fun tapas spot with a really nice atmosphere for a date, probably not a first date but maybe date #3 and beyond. We got six plates and dessert, which was more than enough food for two. The jumbo asparagus was surprisingly good for someone who is generally pretty lukewarm on the slimy long green vegetable. The hummus and flatbread were incredible, so highly recommend that! Loved the falafel and was okay with the mushrooms though it wasn't my favorite. This place has some of the best tapas I have ever had. Yes it's a little pricey, but you're getting some above average sized tapas as well. My personal favorite was the lamb and green goddess salad. A little too busy for my liking but that is a testament to the quality of the food. Upon my arrival in DC, I found this place doing a Google search for a place to dine near my hotel. The name piqued my interested, so I looked it up and was determined to try it, looking at the photos of what appeared to be fabulous food. Go there I did, and it was. Amazing! Even though many reviewers feature the half=chicken, I thought my best strategy was to try many small dishes. Besik (aka "Basil") was delightful, incredibly helpful and informative. My top favorite was the smoked duck breast prosciutto. It was twelve-times more wonderful than I imagined--and that was a lot! It was served with stone ground mustard, but I wanted to sample it naked first. I loved it so much that only quantity of slices persuaded me to try it with the mustard. I am so glad because I loved it equally, just differently. My second favorite was the Green Goddess salad. Might not sound like a big deal, but it was fantastic. So fresh and lovely with the vegetable choices, and it was deliciously, but lightly dressed. Coming in third was the incredible labneh topped with sliced dill feathery tops and stems, mint and I'm-not-sure-what-else, but wonderful, and accompanied by a perfect flatbread with toasted seeds a top. Fourth was the lovely feta drizzled with honey. The drinks were incredible, and I'll forever more look to find drinks that will benefit from a cinnamon stick. read more

Upon walking in, the staff was extremely accommodating. We got drinks at the bar before our table was ready (about 5 minutes- not bad at all-we had a reservation on a busy saturday night). Decorations were very nice and the restaurant itself wasn't too loud at all- we could have a conversations without screaming like other dc restaurants, so that was a nice change. The highlight of it all was the food! We were AMAZED at the flavor of each dish. The hummus alone blew my socks iff and the pita it came with, for sure, was the BEST pita i've ever had in my life! The lamb as well- incredibly smooth, buttery and tender. I was in heaven throughout the entire experience. These are two must try dishes. Big thanks to Gypsy Kitchen for a memorable birthday dinner! Since I don't get out as much due to COVID, I didn't even initially realize the location is in what was formerly Masa14. But the space has been re-imagined and I'm digging the warm, eclectic decor. I booked a table on the rooftop patio space after seeing pics online. It's cozy, with nice lighting and on the cute and casual side. Great balance that could be great for a first date or quick catch up with a friend. For those that are still not full comfortable with dining out and might be curious, the patio is semi-enclosed with outdoor air ventilation. My birthday group was a little rowdy, boisterous and I think just really excited to be together. Luckily, our waiter Ulysses understood that and welcomed our energy. He was laid back, accommodating, patient, fun and helped us to keep the drinks and food flowing during our time at the restaurant. As for the food, it was delicious! We just ordered a range that included the Grilled Dates, Lamb Moussaka, Grilled Flat Iron Steak and Crispy Cauliflower plates. My favorite by far was was the Grilled Flat Iron Steak with curried lebanese couscous, garlic yogurt, chermoula - it was perfection! I really also liked whatever sparkling wine we had flowing (my friends' just kept re-ordering the original one they ordered me so not sure of the name.) And the "Can I Kick It" cocktail is worth an order even if it's just to get a "Yes you can" response from the waiter! (Tribe Called Quest reference.) Overall, the experience and the food was excellent (4.5) but Ulysses really is what made this a 5 star experience!
