happy valentines day from GK! - this restaurant is just so damn pretty, the color scheme is so so warm, artsy, and whimsical. everything is light wood with beautiful light fixtures and attention to detail. the heated patio is stunning but it was too cold for me (shocker!) - we tried the short rib croquettes, labne, hummus bil lahme, broccolini, and fried halloumi - the hummus bil lahme was incredible, this is an absolute must. you obviously need to try the hummus at a Mediterranean restaurant to get a good assessment of the restaurant. adding the warm, juicy tender lamb on top of this made this dish complete while still allowing for their hummus to be tested - the labne was rich and smokey. a great appetizer to share. the short rib croquettes had an amazing rich flavor but very little meat inside of the crunchy thick shell so it was sort of a russion roulette - the broccolini was showstopping. charred perfectly resting in a cool thick labhne paired with the salty potato crisps on top and complimented by the chili spice. My group and I really enjoyed our dinner at Gypsy Kitchen. The service from staff was great. I appreciate how accommodating the team was and they went above and beyond to make sure we were having a good experience. The hummus and flatbread was amazing. There is so much flavor in both items. The Hummus bil Lahme was a table favorite and my friend couldn't stop saying how tasty and tender the lamb was. The Chicken Kapama was a perfect dish for the season, with it being so cold outside, this dish warms you inside out. The mushroom toast was really good and filling. The Gambas was tasty as well with large shrimp. It isn't mentioned on the menu but the Gambas includes pork on the toast - my friend doesn't eat pork and was thrown off. The broth and everything was really good. The Lacquered Half Chicken had a sweetness to it that went really well with the spicy pilaf and pickles. They ran out of rockfish so red snapper was the Grilled Market Fish entree. The dashi broth was savory and I liked that came on the side to add as much or as little as desired. Although we had many rounds of the il Peccatore, we had to try some desserts. The cheesecake tasted freshly made, smooth and creamy. Sat at the bar at the end of happy hour. The food and ambiance were great, but the service was not good. We had to wave down the two bartenders, who focused their time and energy on the server (who was standing in the service station) and their friends who were sitting at the bar, instead of any of the other bar customers down the full length of the bar during a slow happy hour (there were 2-3 other groups who also struggled to get the bartenders' attention too). We had to ask twice for my drink, wave down a bartender to order more food, and I even had to ask for a water glass at the end because neither bartender realized the other hadn't given me one (maybe they would have if they chose to pay any attention to the rest of their bar). We asked for the check and just gave one of them our credit cards immediately because we didn't have more time to wait for them. I know good help is hard to find right now, but this was my first and likely last time at Gypsy Kitchen. There are plenty of places where bartenders actually understand that to sell food and drink, you have to actually provide service to customers. This place is fantastic. I recently moved to DC and have come here several times and have loved it every visit. The service is friendly and the food is delicious. The best part is how easy it is to share as the menus is primarily small plates -- from the hummus with lamb shoulder to the charcuterie board. You can't go wrong with these dishes. Full disclosure...The wine is a little funky, featuring regions that you don't typically find on a menu like Macedonia and Lebanon. Our servers have been incredibly accommodating to let us try some of these wines since I couldn't even pronounce many of them. I'm so glad since some of these wines were not to my taste! But I loved their Greek Kir Yanni white, which was light and crisp. The cocktails are also a safe bet if you're not sure you're feeling adventurous in the wine department! This is likely my favorite restaurant in DC at present. The flavors are rich and deep and every dish is well thought out. I've been back multiple times and my favorite dishes include the beef kebab (served with a delicious cous cous) and lamb hummus served with fresh bread. The cheesecake is amazing too! I've been for brunch and dinner, and had great service both times. During one visit, they accidentally sent out something I was allergic to, which wasn't a big deal because I could see it and didn't eat it. When I alerted our server, she was so apologetic and the manager came over to apologize as well. They gave us some complimentary dishes to replace it. So kind! Now on to the food.
