I booked this place for a girls night out last week and honestly I really really wanted to like them. Their patio and menu both looked super cool. We got here at 9 pm and didn't leave until 1 am, ordered tons of food and drinks but the overall experience was kinda meh. First off, they wouldn't seat us unless our whole party was here and eventually when they did seat us, I swear it was the worst table upstairs - right in the middle of the entry way, a tiny rickety high top, not meant for even 2 people wanting to eat tapas style ( which is what the restaurant is) and constant jostling of elbows as people passed you. This is also when the place was definitely not at full capacity and we could see a few open tables. Our server ( totally blanking on her name) was super sweet though and helped us move to bigger corner table and that was definitely better. I would say the place gets ridiculously loud and the lighting kinda sucks, but I guess I'm getting old lol. For drinks, we tried pretty much all cocktails they had and my favorite was probably the manzanita. The la murga was also popular at our table. Things that worked well - We started with the hummus and pita app which was decent, loved the fluffy fresh bread. The beet salad was definitely very delicious and we ordered seconds, as was the cheese ball plate ( tirokroketes). What didn't work - The squash soup was kinda sad because they had tons of garam masala ( a very Indian spice) sprinkled on top of it. It made me mad because the soup absolutely didn't need it - it would have tasted better without uncooked garam masala for real. Same story with the chicken kapama and the falafel - everything tasted like uncooked spices. Given the place was leaning in on Mediterranean cuisine I thought the falafel was a big letdown - chewy and doughy inside while being crumbly. The lamhe was okay - the hummus and pita were good, but the goat itself was very one note with the flavor, though well cooked in terms of texture. Also had an issue with a food runners kind being disrespectful to the food and dumping plates on our table unceremoniously. Post 11 pm our server changed and the new one was very very interested in clearly out our plates several time even though we were still working on our food, weird again. However since we liked the overall ambiance and good company made up for the average food and basic service, we did spend a lot of time here. I likely will not be seeking them out again - I feel like there are plenty of better restaurants in town. read more

Came into gypsy kitchen on a Saturday night and it was packed! I got a reservation because I knew it was a prime time and a popular place. My reservation was for 8:15 PM and we were sat pretty quickly at a good table. 10/10 for the food and drinks the flavors were all phenomenal and for that I will be back. However the pace of service was so incredibly slow. We were sat in a section with a couple of big groups and our table of two felt neglected the whole time. We ordered 3 dishes and two of them came out right away- after an hour of waiting for our Patatas Bravas we flagged the waiter and asked where they were - his response "oh we are all out of those for tonight!" - why didn't he say that when we ordered it?? If the service was more attentive we'd have ordered more food and another round of drinks but since the server only checked in every 30 or so minutes we decided we are better off just asking for the check. Finally after another 20 + minutes the check comes and we were charged for the Patatas bravas that never came! They did take them off no problem but that was the icing on the cake. We left around 10 having shown up at 8:15 and only gotten two appetizers and a round of drinks- which is really too bad because the food and drinks were so good I'd definitely have ordered more had we been checked on. I understand busy Saturday nights as a server and having large groups in your section it's easy to overlook smaller parties but for a place this big and this busy it would have been way better if there was an additional server on duty so the one poor guy didn't have to try to juggle so many tables and the tables could have more attention. I'll definitely consider giving them another shot based on the amazing flavors of the food I did get to try! read more

So I was super excited to eat at Gypsy Kitchen. Even though the name did give me "pause"... I had one night in DC because I was seeing a show at The Kennedy Center and I OF COURSE planned my meal. Found Gypsy Kitchen on Yelp. Tons of great reviews and fantastic photos. It looked beautiful and Tapas is my jam! I LOVE to eat as many different dishes as possible, so the small plate style of dining is always my go to. There were plenty of options on their menu for someone who doesn't eat beef, pork or poultry (me...). I arrived at about 5:30pm. The place is quite large and is beautiful. The interior is just lovely. I even took a picture of the engraved, concrete bar (which is where I sat). Plenty of staff and everyone was friendly and attentive and engaging. Nice vibe. The only real issue with the setting was how incredibly dark it was. Once the sun went down they dimmed the lights so much I could actually not even see my food. I'm not joking. And I was wearing my glasses, so it's not a "me" thing. When my mushroom toast arrived I could not see the mushrooms and I forgot it had an egg, BECAUSE I COULD NOT SEE THE EGG. Now I understand that most people don't want to eat in surgical suite lighting. But there is a happy medium between complete darkness and extreme daylight. This was far too dark. This isn't a nightclub. I fail to understand why they think zero light is a good approach to dining. It was so dark that it really detracted from all the other, nice and good things I listed above about the restaurant. So that's a problem. Of course also a VERY EASILY fixed problem....just turn that dimmer up a bit! I started with the Hummus and Flatbread. The Hummus is PERFECTION. So perfectly creamy and silky and smooth. People think Hummus is easy. Nothing is easy if you are doing it correctly and people often make Hummus incorrectly. It should be silky smooth. Hummus requires Tahini and LOTS of processing to get that consistency. Gypsy Kitchen has that down. So my hopes were pretty freaking high at that point. I started to get a little worried because I was eating the Hummus with the accompanying flatbread, which started out delicious! Hot, a little oil, but the more I ate the saltier everything got. Whoever is in charge of seasoning has got a crazy heavy hand with the salt. And it's not a good thing. I had to stop eating the flatbread because it was so intensely salty I wanted to wipe it off with a napkin. Instead I decided to just stop eating it in the hopes I was maybe over reacting. I wasn't. The next thing I got was the Crispy Cauliflower. It was good. Not great. The cauliflower was, in essence, cooked tempura style. So each floret was completely encased in a rather thick layer of batter and then fried. Which is kind of a lot. Also, dried fruit relish...meh. I moved on to the Tuna Crudo. Gypsy Kitchen is working with a lot of ingredients that are currently quite "trendy" in American kitchens and can be pretty great. The Tuna Crudo is listed on the menu with heirloom tomato, grilled corn, yuzu mayo, Shoyu Vinaigrette and puffed rice furikake. The only flavor you can taste is the Shoyu...salt. Not good. Lots of nice seeming ingredients that have been drowned in salt. I ordered the Mushroom Toast. I LOVE mushrooms. I was thinking this would be great! It was not. First, as mentioned, it was SO INCREDIBLY DARK inside the restaurant at that point that I couldn't even see the mushrooms. I just had to fork at my plate and see what came up on the fork. This was too salty to even eat. I'd managed to eat the flatbread and the tuna, but I could not also choke down mushrooms that were caked in salt. Really bad. This dish also contains a 63 degree egg. Which is also a rather "trendy" thing right now in restaurants. I'm not a fan. I poach eggs all day every day in my kitchen. I view a 63 degree egg as a very poorly poached egg. Either poach eggs or don't. These not properly cooked eggs are just not good. Also, I forgot this dish had an egg and I couldn't see it BECAUSE IT WAS SO INCREDIBLY DARK at the bar, until I hit it with my fork. I tried to get a look at the ciabatta this whole mess was on top of. But, again, I would have needed my phone's flashlight to really get a look and I was so turned off my ALL THE SALT and the undercooked egg that I quit... read more

Great restaurant! We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We started with the hummus and cauliflower, both of which were incredibly tasty, featuring intricate flavors that were sweet, spicy, and delicious. As fans of Branzino fish, we couldn't resist ordering it. It was absolutely fantastic--a whole fish, butterflied, charred, and grilled to perfection, served with a garbanzo bean cucumber salad. I am usually skeptical when a restaurant adds so called "modern twist" to a traditional cuisine. Gypsy is an exception! Everything we got were delicious! We got lamb hummus which comes with a warm pita bread, a beets salad and duck prosciutto (first time trying a duck prosciutto). Date night and it was awesome! We came for 6:30pm dinner on the rooftop. Glad there was a table for us. We ordered the Humus bil labmeh a roasted lamb shoulder hummus with bread (must try!), mushroom toast (ooh Lala if you like mushrooms!), beef kebab, tiger prawns and scallops and it was all absolutely delicious! The roasted lamb shoulder is a must to start! We shared everything and we're full with just the 3 plates. I say that because 1 thing that was a bummer (which is why it is not 5 stars) was that the prawns and scallops came out a lot later than the other plates. The scallops and prawns came significantly later we were already pretty much full and done. We had to take it to go since we were catching a show. Had it the next day and it was still delicious! Gypsy Kitchen has been one of my must try places for the past year so I was excited when my friend suggested we grab dinner there this past weekend. The ambiance was nice ! I thought the decor was fabulous and the outdoor dining was cute although I thought I'd get a better view (I only saw trees from my table). Note that the restaurant will not seat you unless everyone in the party was there. I was running late and my friend said she was told our table could be given to someone else. Also, it was dark where I was so I had to use my phone's flashlight to read the menu. Our waiter was great! He consistently checked in on us and was amazing throughout the night! Food was were it missed the mark for me. The hummus was good but the restaurant was out of bread so replaced it with a few slices of carrots and cucumbers. The mushroom toast was cold and the egg was undercooked with a weird texture. The scallops were tasty but very small (size of a quarter), there were 3 pieces and honestly not worth $27 imo. Some of the food was ok and one plate was inedible. We ordered five plates. The goddess salad and tuna crudo came out quickly. They were totally fine. Not a lot of flavor. Awhile later our cocktails came out and they were good. After awhile the jamón came out and it was honestly the best part of the meal. We had to ask twice for the octopus which was inedible. We took one bite each and passed on eating any more. The last dish was the patatas bravas. They were at least hot and crispy. They didn't taste like patatas bravas to us. Crispy potatoes with a sour cream and red sauce of some kind. Nothing special. Over all the stars are for the atmosphere, friendly staff, and cocktails. The fried halloumi - really good flavor and overall dish, but it could have been crispier on the outside. That's all that was really missing. Fried cauliflower - was good but nothing memorable. Probably should've gone for falafel here. Beef kebab - We wanted some more meat to fill me up but this was decent at best. A couple pieces were overcooked and overall it tasted like a kebab you could get at any middle eastern fast casual spot, nothing special. The desserts - we had the fried donuts (loukomades) but there was way too much cardamom so that's all we were tasting. Not sure if that's how it's intended authentically but even as Indian's, just wasn't our favorite! We also tried the baklava cast iron which was really good, but they were out of ice cream, which was super disappointing. The main reason I ordered it was to have a warm baklava a la mode, and the waiter acknowledged he didn't know they were out of ice cream and comped the dessert which was a nice gesture. Overall, probably give this an 8/10 experience, but the food maybe a 7/10. Really enjoyed the ambiance and our server was really nice, but maybe we need to come back for happy hour or when the menu rotates. The hummus was flavorful, and the accompanying pita was fluffy and buttery. The cauliflower was perfectly cooked and flavorful. The fried chicken had the perfect texture and flavor and paired nicely with the tzatziki. The beef kabob was a flavor bomb that actually invoked the flavor of the Middle East. Finally, the halloumi was the perfect bite of salty and sweet. I don't know that you can go wrong with any of the menu items. One day, I hope to check out their rooftop! read more

Decided to dine at this restaurant during our visit to DC. I will start by saying that the experience was fantastic. The interior is beautiful and the food is delicious. We started with their hummus bil Lahme which was delicious! By far the best hummus I have had in my life! We scoured this hummus within a few minutes and had to order another one! Unfortunately this made us full quickly but we still decided to try as many small plates as possible. We next had their crispy cauliflower, beef kebab, gambas and green pea falafel. We had a wonderful evening on Gypsy Kitchen's rooftop deck! Downstairs there is a bar on the right and dining on the left. Looks like a nice area, but we had a reservation on the deck, so we went up the stairs to an upstairs bar and then to our table. Showers were forecast so they had the retractable canopy covering the space which was furnished modestly and comfortably. Here's the best part: everything we ordered was delicious! Seriously, we thought we got lucky with the first few small plates, but every one of them throughout the meal was excellent. So many wonderful flavors and attractive presentations. Phenomenal meal; we shared three small plates amongst two people. We ordered the labneh, mushroom toast, and kibbeh, which was plenty. The labneh came topped with some greens and a large pita. When we ran out of pita we were offered a second one (for a nominal $3) to finish off the labneh. The mushroom toast was perfectly seasoned and and the kibbeh came with three pieces and a parsley salad. My friend had the mezcal pineapple cocktail and my drink was off menu (they ran out of whatever I ordered and brought me this instead, which was delicious). I came to this adorable spot and was pleasantly surprised by the decor. We sat on the rooftop/patio which was extremely hot as the fans only face certain directions ( funny enough, they moved the fan and somehow it stayed in place for a couple). Everything was delicious BUT the small portions were overpriced. e.g. a small piece of crispy chicken breast with some sauce (no sides!!) was $15. To get a full meal, you have to order multiple small portions all averaging $10-$20 per item. That adds up quick for one person and that is not including the $12+ cocktails. Also, the restaurant was fairly empty but they insisted on sitting guests right on top of each other. Give guests space when it's so empty so we aren't loud talking our tablemate because the couple next to us is just as loud. Finally, the bathrooms were clean. read more

All the good flavors. Beef was #2. Beef was tender, but the flavorful couscous underneath was the best. Lamb hummus was also good, but my #3. I liked the sweet currents on the savory dish. I love as much flavor as I can get. Give me sweet, salty, spicy, savory all in one. Baklava skillet was good. I could take it or leave it. The nuts were whole inside. This spot used to be Massa 14 and is still just as cute. The food is Mediterranean and absolutely delish. Their Labneh is so delicious and their pita bread moist, soft with a nice crisp. The fried chicken phyllo dish was amazing and that tomato jam out of this world! The only dish I didnt enjoy was the crispy cauliflower - it lacked flavor and the cauliflower was a bit soggy. The "garden bar" is in the covered area, and you cannot reserve a spot or sit at the high tables in the bar area. The biggest drink selection is the spritzs: sparkling wine and soda with various floral syrups. The food options are their dips, fried cheese, a chicken pie, and lamb meatballs. We did have a decent experience with tasty bites. Underwhelmed by their hummus dip, but enjoyed the chicken with phyllo dough. One DC problem is that it got really loud.
