Had a business dinner at Grotto Downtown and it all was pretty good! We had pizza's, pastas and some appetizers that all were very tasty. I would like to start out by giving a big shoutout to Ari who was the best server anyone could ask for. She should be promoted or given a bonus or something! Thanks, Ari! The ambiance was nice. Outdoor and indoor seating and private dining for parties with a nice bar. I am a bit of a pizza snob, and while it was good I'm reserving my 5 stars for my top fav pizza's and this didn't make that cut. The pasta's were awesome though, and the appetizers were great. I'd definitely pop back in, especially if you are at the convention center or headed to a ball game. Thanks!

While in Houston at a convention, I stepped out from the event and only had to walk a few feet to Grotto. What a delight! The interior is artsy and fun, with dark wood and unique lighting. I got there before the rush, so I had most of the restaurant to myself, and that was very pleasant. The service was impeccable. I was sat quickly, greeted professionally, my server came over immediately. He offered suggestion (and they were spot on for my taste), I had my water and a drink within minutes, and within 10 minutes I had my food. It was delicious. I are alone, and enjoyed every minute - thats not something I normally say. I hate eating alone. But I felt welcomed there. And when I asked for if the waiter know where the hotel was from the restaurant, he quickly pulled out his phone and looked it up for me and then made sure I understood the directions. Now... thats service!

We had such a wonderful night at grotto. We had a large group and had an individual room with the sliding door that closed off. You were able to control the music independently here which was very nice. The food was very amazing and the service was impeccable.

This is a nice bistro connected to the downtown convention center. A short walk from the baseball park and across the street from the Marriott Marquee. Which puts it as an excellent meeting place during a conference or before a game. The food is excellent, the noise level down enough to hear your friends and the ambiance is warm and cozy. What more can one ask for?

I went in for lunch last week opening day of Astros. I ordered the Frito Miso and the pepperoni pizza. Oh my God delicious. The service was great. I said at the bar the ambience was wonderful. Lots of people friendly people.

Omg this place was amazing!! We got a pizza and the shrimp pasta and both were delicious. The vibe is super cute and the staff was super friendly. For how busy it was, service was great and the food came out quick! Definitely would come back here when in Houston.

I never know what I'm going to get when I go to restaurants by tourist attractions and hotels... however I was extremely surprised by how great this place was... came in around 5pm on Friday.. decently busy but I was able to sit at the bar on the chairs without backs (which upset me at first but ended up being very comfortable). I was alone but didn't feel judged or anything which was nice. I got the sangria and the francese dish. Everything came out fast. I don't love red sangrias but this one was excellent... and the food... I would've drank the sauce if they gave me a glass.. so so good I was obsessed and almost at all of it and it was a nice big portion. Ambience is warm and friendly.. if I'm ever back in the area I'll have to come again!

My co-worker and I asked for a recommendation at the hotel across the street where we were staying. They recommended Grotto. From the moment we entered we felt like this was a great decision. The host offered us a lovely table by the window. We were there during happy hour and they had excellent selection of cocktails. 3-7 pm for happy hour is amazing! We chose 3 selections. We started with the rosemary focaccia bread with honey ricotta and olives. The bread was simply delicious and a very large portion. It was soft with the perfect amount of rosemary. Then we selected the kale salad that had a variety of veggies and meat with a delicious vinaigrette dressing. Our entree was a pasta dish with wild mushrooms, pancetta, and fried egg on top. It was unique and delicious. I wish we had a place like this back home because this would enter my rotation. If you're here for business of fun, I suggest you check it out. Our server was Ella and she was attentive and offered great suggestions.

This restaurant is attached to the convention centre in Downtown Houston. The order consisted of Chilled Cucumber- garnished with almonds, and drizzled with a vinaigrette, it was the best cucumber salad. Roasted Butternut Squash soup - my fav soup, and I was not disappointed, it was really yummy. Pasta Verdure- the vegetarian pasta looked great , tasted even greater. The simple dish was just the right balance between pasta and salad, perfect to my liking. Next came the dessert, the Thiramisu ! If was too huge to finish so got it to-go. It had all the flavors of coffee, cream and so much more. Ambience is very welcoming . Great place, must visit.

My husband and I stopped in for a quick bite before the Rockets game. Super close to the Toyota Center so a great place to go to before an event or game. The restaurant is super cozy on the inside and they had a ton of indoor and outdoor seating! We split a bunch of appetizers which were all good. They have a happy hour M-F, 4pm-7pm. Our waiter was super attentive and we will definitely be back to eat dinner soon!

Great place to grab food before an Astros game. We like ordering a pizza and other appetizers before heading to the stadium.

The vibe of this place was very nice! Grotto has an upscale ambiance in the heart of downtown. We had 2 big tables of around 12 each and they accommodated for us. The service was pretty quick even for the last hour of dinner. I'm lacking photos for some dishes here but I'll give my honest thoughts! Apps: The Garlic Knots were very soft and yummy. The Fritto Misto was fried to a golden crisp and had a black pepper aioli that I really enjoyed. Lastly we got the Short Rib Gnocchi, the short rib taste really stood out but I think it was bit dense for my liking. Main: For my main dish our server suggested the Capra. It was Gemelli pasta with a DELICIOUS semi spicy Calabrian crema rosa sauce. The sauce is really what made the dish standout to me as I rarely find pastas with a kick in flavor. Would absolutely come here just for this again. Dessert: I had the Strawberry Cassata and I think the soaked angel food cake texture may not be for me but flavor wise it was unique/quite sweet. Next time I think I'll try the Mezzanote (Dark Chocolate Cake) or the Affogato & Bomboloni Notes: I do wish portions were a bit bigger!

    Crème brûlée was awesome

Really lovely evening dining at Grotto while in town for a conference. They are serving up fantastic food and outstanding drinks in an elegant yet inviting atmosphere. Stand outs were the short rib gnocchi, espresso martini and crème brûlée. Would absolutely return here if I'm ever in Houston again.

Is this place still doing Happy Hour? I don't see a menu on their website, nor a lunch menu.

Hello, yes, we are still providing Happy Hour, Mon - Fri 3PM - 7PM. Thank you.

How is the atmosphere for a Friday night dinner date?

Overall it's a nice feel, but petty casual especially if Astros are playing. May be some fans before / after. Caveat: it can be hit or miss though....been there when its packed on Friday night and been there when its pretty slow.

Is there a happy hour and if so whats on the menu?

We have happy hour from Monday to Friday, 3pm to 7pm. Please visit our website to view the menu: grottorestaurants.com.

The cheese board plates like delicious! For a party of 6, what would you recommend?

Please visit our website to view the menu: http://www.grottorestaurants.com/. Our dessert and cheese plates are perfect to share for a large party.

Do they have any vegan dishes?

Not sure if they had any on the regular menu, but our server offered a couple times that the kitchen is more than happy to make things not on the menu to accommodate.

Is it difficult to find parking?

Go to Avenida South garage. Grotto will validate your parking ticket for free till 3 hours.

Our friend booked a reservation and was able to add a fourth person without any issues. It's on Westheimer where all the restaurants and shops are, so it's pretty busy. You can either park on the street or in the neighborhood behind. There's bar, small table and booth seating available. One of our friends who arrived early got to switch us to a booth since we'd have a few plates to share for the four of us. My friend and I shared the NA red sangria. I liked that there was a NA option for that, and you can choose either red or white. We ordered a pitcher since we were sharing. It was delicious and refreshing. I think I had about 3 wine glasses of it. Our group shared the red fish à la plancha, patatas bravas, spinach frittata, olive oil pancakes and bacon-wrapped dates. Some of the dishes were bigger than others. Tapas is meant to be small plates, and they were, but it's a little overpriced. For example, the red fish was $15.50 for maybe 2 oz of fish. The stack of olive oil pancakes were small and thin for $8.50. If you're sharing, it's not that much food. I was going to order another personal stack of olive oil pancakes because that cinnamon butter was so good! I decided not to after I let all of what we ordered and drank settle for a bit after. The valdeon whipped blue cheese under the bacon-wrapped dates didn't taste very good and seemed grainy to me. It was my least favorite. The standouts for me were the olive oil pancakes, spinach frittata that was actually loaded with more veggies and bell peppers and the patatas bravas which was piled with potatoes topped with mayo that melted down and looked almost like melted cheese on top. It's a fun place for friends to gather or a cute date spot. You may or may not be hungry after depending what you order. There are larger plates/entrees like paella and branzino to share.

The vibe inside is super cute with mood lighting and plenty of intimate seating spaced throughout. Parking in said shopping center is sparse. I'm not sure if parking is allowed at the neighboring businesses after hours, but I wanted to play it safe and ended up waiting about 15 minutes for someone to vacate their space. Our group had a couple of tables reserved and they had no problem having everyone pay on separate tabs. Service is offered both at the table and bar. Our waiter was attentive and had great recommendations for wine. When I was conflicted between two whites, he graciously brought me out both to taste and decide. I went with the Cacciabruco Malvasia/Trebbiano, which is a skin-contact white wine, so it had more of a reddish hue to it and almost looked like a rose in the dim lighting of the restaurant. I really liked this, as it was on the drier side and satisfied my palate more than the Gewürztraminer that I had also sampled. I didn't try the food but others in our party really liked the flatbreads they ordered. I do want to try these out next time because I know they will pair great with the wine! The fig, prosciutto and other toppings complimented each other well. The flatbread dough itself was ok but could've benefited from a little more flavor such as some garlic, butter and herbs. I also would've liked it a bit thinner so I could taste less of the bread and more of those delicious toppings. Don't get me wrong it was good and I ate all of it but these are small suggestions I'd recommend to bring it to perfection. I could see parking and seating being tricky. Parking/Service: There was a small lot on the side of the building, but other than that you might have to street park in the neighborhood right next to it. The ordering system was a bit of a surprise for me. You have to walk in to the bar and order there.

When my friend made the reservation, she received an email encouraging customers to visit the tasting room before or after dinner. We showed up an hour early to visit the tasting room, however the host had no idea what we were talking about. Turns out they weren't doing tastings. Luckily, we didn't have to wait to be seated. We initially had a table that was not near a heat lamp, however an employee came over and let us know that we could switch to a table near the heat lamp which was appreciated because it was chilly. Our server was Laura. She was nice and funny. They had $25 flight specials. I went with the Sayanara Flight which had white wines. I really enjoyed them and they weren't too sweet. My friend had an NA wine which she enjoyed. We ordered the Truffle Fries and Meatballs. Both dishes were tasty. I enjoyed the aioli that came with the fries. They had discounted wines for purchase. Not all bottles were 50% off, however the gentleman that we spoke to went ahead and gave me a 50% discount on both the rosé and pinot grigio that I purchased which was so appreciated! It seems like there are quite a few businesses around town that are closing. I'm sad to see Mutiny go, but I'm glad my friend and I got to dine in on their final night.

"Closing time, you don't have to go home But you can't stay…read morehere." - Semisonic I have lived in the loop for 5 years now, and I'm sad to say that I finally tried Mutiny on their last day. I often pass by it going through a shortcut to I-45 and sometimes going home around the area. It's literally a 5-minute drive. I booked reservations Friday since I saw they opened up the 31st on Resy. It wasn't earlier in the week, but I knew it was the last day, and my friend and I really wanted to try. I'm glad we made reservations because they were at capacity (150 person capacity) and weren't taking any walk ins. We got there early cause Resy suggested checking out the Tasting Room before or after the reservation time. We got there about an hour earlier, and the host said he didn't know anything about that except that the Tasting Room area was used for events. Interesting. We were seated earlier on the patio on this freezing evening. At first, we were at a table that didn't have a heat lamp, but when one freed up, they were so nice to suggest that we move closer to the heat lamp since they saw us shivering. Lol. We were thankful for that. I wore fleece lined jeans and brought gloves and a beanie anyway having been in the below freezing winter in London. Laura was our server and was kind and funny. So was this other guy who checked in every now and then. He made light of their last day situation. The dining area is so beautiful inside. I love the limestone-looking interior and chandeliers. Reminds me of Fredericksburg or something. They had many large groups and a few small groups of friends or couples dining on this last day. Way to go out with a bang. A lot of the wines were selling out or already sold out around 7-8 pm. We tried the truffle fries and Sicilian meatballs with focaccia bread. I like the thick cut of the fries and the black garlic aioli. It reminded me of yuca fries. The Sicilian meatballs were a bit small, peppery and salty. I wish the marinara was a little more tart. The focaccia helped cut through the saltiness. I had 2 glasses of the NA Sauvignon blanc which was light and a little tart. They ran out of the NA red blend. My friend ordered Sayonara, one of their farewell flights which were aptly named for "goodbye". It was a great night on the patio but chilly. My friend purchased a rosé and a Pinot Grigio as part of their Last Sail wines. Actually, the Pinot Grigio wasn't part of the sale, and he was going to take off 20%, but he also made it 50% off. So nice!! I'm glad we got to try them on their last day. Bon voyage, Mutiny.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, especially during brunch with all the natural lighting coming through the indoor space. Such a lovely atmosphere with plants surrounding us. The food was amazing, and sharing appetizers was the perfect way to try a few different things. They also have a huge wine selection, which I really enjoyed. I tried their pizza paired with wine, and honestly, it was the perfect combination. The service was also excellent, everyone was welcoming, attentive, and made the experience even better without feeling rushed. They even asked if we wanted to help to get our picture taken, that was so sweet of them.

I arrived about an hour before closing, expecting it to be quiet, but at 9:00 p.m. it was still bustling with energy, laughter, and that soft glow that makes everything feel a little more special. I ordered the pork chop and swapped the carrots for broccolini. The pork chop had a beautiful char and was full of flavor--slightly undercooked, yes, but still delicious enough to carry the whole meal. I do wish they had mashed potatoes on the menu, though... it would have made it perfect. We also shared the Brussels sprouts, and sadly, they missed the mark this time. Dry and bitter, nothing like the saucy, flavorful version I've had before--maybe just the late hour catching up with the kitchen. But even so, that pork chop... it lingered in the best way. And sometimes, that's all you need.

You do check in and put a card down, and they give you a tasting card that lets you sample different wines at various pour amounts. Such a cool and fun concept! We arrived during happy hour (I believe it's from 4-7 PM), which was perfect. The space itself is super cute and cozy. When we first arrived it wasn't too crowded, but it definitely started filling up closer to 6 PM. For happy hour, we ordered several appetizers to share between the three of us: shrimp, Brussels sprouts, and truffle fries -- all were SO good. Later, we ordered two steaks with fries, which were amazing and came with a buttery sauce that really took them to the next level. I also ordered the lemon pepper buffalo wings, and those were absolutely delicious as well. The service was great, especially considering there were only about two or three people working. Everyone was attentive and friendly. If you're a wine lover, you'll enjoy the wine selection. I'm a big Pinot Noir fan, and while there was only one Pinot option, I loved it so much that I kept going back to it. The wine tasting option made it easy to try a few others before deciding. Prices were very reasonable -- not overpriced at all -- especially for the quality of the food and experience. We didn't make reservations and were able to walk right in, though I'd recommend reservations if you're going later in the evening since it does get packed. Roots is located right across from some apartments in the EADO area and made for the perfect girls' night out. Great food, great service, great vibes. I would absolutely recommend this place and will definitely be back!
