Around 4-5 pm, while making sandwiches, this guy wrote up orders, picked money up from the floor, wiped his hands on his pants, and handled cash. Then, he started to make sandwiches without washing his hands. While he was putting his nasty, dirty, yucky fingers all over some deli meat, I asked him why he was handling food without washing his hands. The two employees were arguing with each other in front of the customers right when my boyfriend and I walked in. I understand that rushes are stressful, but you have to be professional. The lady who took our order didn't communicate very well with us because she focused her energy on talking back to the woman making the sandwiches. Once we signed the receipt we didn't receive a "thank you" at all or any sign that we were all set.. We had to awkwardly walk out while they continued arguing. I strongly advise the two employees to work on communication, leave the attitude aside, and understand that customers sitting outside can hear every argument you have! Your bickering makes everyone feel uncomfortable!! My boyfriend and I got two Garcia sandwiches. They were supposed to come with avocado and sprouts, but there were no sprouts on either and ONE slice of avocado on his sandwich. Probably because the chef was focused on arguing rather than making the sandwiches correctly? The overall taste was nothing special at all. Most people could make something better at home. We stopped here because of the good reviews and wanted to pick up some sandwiches before heading out to Maroon Bells and ended up waiting way too long for mediocre sandwiches. I hate giving lower stars but the vibe of the staff felt like they were bummed that they had to make the food we ordered and when we finally got the sandwiches we were underwhelmed. We were there in October, they weren't busy (we were literally the only ones there until someone came after us) and we came around 11. There were other shops that we were considering going to but figured if they're selling a Grateful Dead vibe it would be chill and welcoming but next time we'll be going to one of the other places that look like they have some good chow to offer. Sandwiched (pun intended) between two buildings is the best sandwich I found in Aspen - Grateful Deli. These guys are awesome and serve one heck of a good meal! Amazing sandwiches!!! I got the Terrapin and my boyfriend got the Franklin Tower. They were both excellent and actually cheap for the size of them! If you're shy or not super hungry, sharing is definitely an option. The tiny shop is just about big enough for 4 people to stand in at a time but there are benches outside and a park down the block which is perfect for a fall picnic. If you are going to embrace this theme, which I love, the staff should really have good energy. The girl taking our order almost acted as if she was inconvenienced to help us. They were somewhat busy, but certainly not slammed and our 3 sandwiches took 15-20 minutes. We were looking for an affordable deli, and while "affordable" and "Aspen" don't go together, I'd say that this place is affordable for Aspen. I ordered the chicken chipotle panini and the sub sandwich that comes with sprouts. I can't remember the name of it, but really enjoy sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts and those are difficult to find. It's a hole in the wall and there is no room to dine in, but there are a couple of little tables next to the sidewalk in front of the shop. Was excited to try this place when visiting Aspen. Walked by 2 minutes before opening and walked in to buy sandwiches and a tshirt. An employee told us they were not yet open which was fine but she was EXTREMELY rude. 5 minutes after opening a fellow customer went in and she yelled at him also. Grateful Deli is the perfect place to eat lunch as a local in Aspen. The prices are so cheap, and the portions are humungous. First and foremost, the owner is a super nice guy. He is down-to-earth, and he makes you feel super welcome in this tiny little shop. For $7.50, you get a sandwich that makes two meals and a punch card for buy 10 get 1 free. I love the Bertha ($7.50), which is essentially an Italian sub. The meats and cheeses are great quality, and the sandwich is layered perfectly so that you can taste all of the ingredients. Grateful Deli offers a nice selection of sandwiches and paninis. For $1 extra, you can turn any of their sandwiches into a panini. The panini options include the Pigpen (ham, swiss, honey mustard, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar), Darkstar (roast beef, red onion, provolone, Dijon mustard and horseradish mayo) and the Magic Mushroom (marinated portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, pesto and provolone), just to name a few. The Magic Mushroom ($8.75) was delicious, made with great, high quality ingredients. Same can be said of the Slipknot sandwich ($7.95), made with pastrami, homemade coleslaw, tomato, swiss and Dijon mustard on a sub roll. There are also salad options as well as build- your-own sandwich option. There are a few chairs and tables just outside this hole-in-the wall but a better option is to enjoy your sandwich at one of the local parks, with at least two within a block of this place. This deli is a complete joke. We went there for a quick takeout sandwich, and the drama between the pretentious woman taking the orders and the two chefs made the experience miserable. We wanted a quick wrap to take away, and the staff got into a fight with each other -- two out of the three employees walked out. We were in a hurry to catch a plane, when I ask for our money back due to the short staff and the long waiting time. The sandwich maker refused to give me back my 10 bucks. It was a complete joke, and I was miffed by the whole experience. Best place for a sandwich in Aspen. But their is no seating inside. And Be Polite dont talk on your cellphone when inside the the restaurant. What am I grateful for today? The sandwich I ate from Grateful Deli - the Darkstar! Roast beef, provolone, red onion, Dijon mustard and horseradish mayonnaise on a grilled foccacia bread. It was just bursting with flavor. The bf and I were starving after a noon yoga class, so we stopped by the deli to pick up some sandwiches. The gal taking our order was super friendly and helpful. My bf didn't want cheese or mayo on his Mexacali Chicken, so she substituted avocado and Dijon mustard. The sandwiches are huge! They cut them up in half and wrap in foil, put them on a paper dish, and wrap again in saran wrap for you to take to go. Extra star because they offer Sweet Leaf Tea. I had never had this brand before and its delicious! I tried the Mint and Honey, along with the Pomegranate...both excellent flavors. Sandwiches run about $7-$9. I don't even know what to say about this place. I HAVE to type because any time I try to say anything about it I start salivating. This was an amazing sandwich! We were walking back to our hotel from the Aspen Brewing Co where they had menus for the deli there. We asked them if it was good and they told us that they were awesome so we decided to check it out. I'm glad we did. I can't remember the name of the sandwich but it was the buffalo chicken one. I love sandwiches but I usually have to change things up to the way I like it, but this sandwich was perfect, I didn't change a thing. We wanted to go to Aspen to try out all of the cool restaurants they had, so when we had to stop at this little place and just get some quick food, it instantly made it one of the higlights of the trip. read more

Fantastic little sandwich shop! They have a huge variety of awesome combinations and have some of the best panini bread I've ever had, fresh, crispy, but still soft on the inside. There's hardly any room inside the store so count on eating outside at their sidewalk tables or taking your food to go. The sandwich portions are GENEROUS for the price, particularly for the area. OMG this place is a little gem! I ordered a turkey sandwich on their hoagie roll. Per their suggestion: skip the regular bread and go for the roll. And they are right. That roll is soft and chewy and delicious! My sandwich was so huge I could only eat half. Bad BAD attitude!!! Walked into this place just as a customer was finishing up. The woman behind the counter looked at me, saying nothing. No hello, no how can I help you. So I said I just need to order and she told me they're on a one customer in the store at a time basis...scolding me as if I should automatically know their policy. So I remained polite and explained I hadn't been there before and asked what was good and she answered everything. I then made the grave mistake of asking if they had soup and she got SO annoyed and started rattling off everything they DON'T have and then totally exasperated she told the other staff that she gets the soup question a million times a day. I'm just a brand new wannabe customer! I didn't want to waste time by reading the extensive menu off the wall and keep other customers waiting outside in the cold, so I figured why not hurry things up and that's the response I get?! I walked in excited for lunch that I assumed would be good based off the line of people waiting outside...but I'll never know since I told the woman she'd been rude to me since the moment she saw me and then I left. I ended up getting 2 soups and 2 sandwiches from Bearden around the corner and everyone there was nice and not abrasive or rude for no reason! I grew up in the restaurant business and then served for 13 years...no matter what kind of day I was having, I NEVER took it out on my customers.
