We found this place on yelp because we were looking for a sandwich for lunch and we didn't want to try to find a restaurant with our dog. This place popped up and we headed that way. Apparently this is a very popular spot with the locals because there was a steady flow of people ordering and they knew exactly what they wanted. This place does not have any inside seating and is very small (150 sq ft) When you walk in you need to know what you want, grab your chips and drinks, place your order, and then exit until they call your name. They have some outside tables and chairs under a tree. Sandwiches are huge; so, we decided to split the shakedown. This sandwich was absolutely wonderful! I'm walking down the street and I see Grateful Dead sandwich shop went in there and oh my God those sandwiches are addictive because they are fresh. I was on a trip from work when I stumbled upon the most hipster sandwich spot in Aspen, Colorado. This is not a sandwich place where you're going to sit down and enjoy the sub and watch the butterflies, they call your name, you grab it and you take it to go or you eat it real quick on one of the few tables outside. I saw a lot of bikers and people on their lunch breaks who get it. Compared to other restaurants in the area, this place is a hidden gem because it's not as costly as some of the other restaurants. I was not disappointed in the bread, meat or veggies because it all tasted FRESH. They call your name when your food is order and you can also get a cookie, soda, or chips with your sandwich. It gives off Austin, Texas vibes, so if you're expecting a subway or jimmy johns, go elsewhere. Unique and delicious subs for a quick, inexpensive meal in Aspen. The inside of the deli is very small and is just for placing orders. There isn't enough room to wait for orders or to dine in. Outside there are a few tables for those that want to eat their sub on the spot. With so many parks nearby it'd be easy to grab your sub and enjoy somewhere else if the deli is too busy. I liked that the menu featured unique sub options. They offer some of the expected options, but most are not the usual options. Any sub can be made into a panini too. If bread isn't your thing they also offer several salads. Picky eaters can build their own. The Shakedown Sub was very good and generously portioned. I liked the combination of turkey, provolone, pesto, mayo, and roasted red peppers. The bread was tasty too. My husband ordered the El Paso as a panini. This was my favorite of the two sandwiches we ordered. The green chilies and chipotle mayo made this unique flavored. I love trying small local joints so my wife and I looked up this sandwich shop on Yelp and figured we'd give it a try. The sandwich was okay, nothing special and honestly I'm not sure I'd go back. Around 4-5 pm, while making sandwiches, this guy wrote up orders, picked money up from the floor, wiped his hands on his pants, and handled cash. While he was putting his nasty, dirty, yucky fingers all over some deli meat, I asked him why he was handling food without washing his hands. The two employees were arguing with each other in front of the customers right when my boyfriend and I walked in. I understand that rushes are stressful, but you have to be professional. I hate giving lower stars but the vibe of the staff felt like they were bummed that they had to make the food we ordered and when we finally got the sandwiches we were underwhelmed. We were there in October, they weren't busy (we were literally the only ones there until someone came after us) and we came around 11. There were other shops that we were considering going to but figured if they're selling a Grateful Dead vibe it would be chill and welcoming but next time we'll be going to one of the other places that look like they have some good chow to offer. We parked the car in the street and walked over to the park, sandwiches in hand. Well, deli me sideways. For a non-local, this place was hard to find. Rationale: I was on the wrong side of the street. Ah. This place was a "Welcome to Aspen" lunch for my coworker and myself - after a long day of flying in NYC, we were hungry. Once we found the place, we ordered up some food and sat outside. It took a good 15 minutes for our food to come. This begs the question - was the service slow? Is Aspen just slow? Are we just used to the speed NYC? All good questions. Truth: I don't really know. The food we got was good - there are a lot of special sandwiches, and if I had the time I would be back to try more. Slightly slow, slightly pricey (lunch was $14 or so each, but I think that's just an Aspen thing) but definitely worth a stop in. Not the best deli sandwich i've ever had, but I think i'm being unfair with what I am comparing it to. We were looking for an affordable deli, and while "affordable" and "Aspen" don't go together, I'd say that this place is affordable for Aspen. I ordered the chicken chipotle panini and the sub sandwich that comes with sprouts. I can't remember the name of it, but really enjoy sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts and those are difficult to find. It's a hole in the wall and there is no room to dine in, but there are a couple of little tables next to the sidewalk in front of the shop.
