I don't see how anyone could rate this place less than 5 stars. Grateful Deli is your perfect local, unique deli -- a literal hole in the wall with a giant menu and always bustling vibe. We got there right before the lunch rush but it was already pretty busy. Full of locals which was a great sign to us! We ordered the Terrapin and Bertha. Heard lots of people ordering the Garcia so that will be one we try next time we go back for sure. We were both incredibly satisfied with what we got-- and I can't forget to mention the sandwiches were HUGE! So huge that we ate one half then and saved the rest for later. My sandwich - the Garcia - was not good. The bread is meh, I got too much mayo even though I asked for lite, and all I could really taste was sprouts. Nothing to write home about. So on my lunch break a buddy of mine told me about this place that makes really good sandwiches so we stopped in there to order and leave really quick. Everything was fine until I noticed that the line of people behind me were all getting their food and I still had not received mine. I went in and was about to ask and the cook says 30 seconds before I could even speak. 10 minutes later I received a very cold disgusting excuse for a sandwich. (I ordered a toasted sandwich.....) After we ordered, we were told they would call our names when our sandwiches were ready and then insisted we exit the premises. Apparently they only call people's names when a motorcycle rides by. The food here was delicious, but it hardly makes up for the downright rudeness of the staff. Grateful is definitely a misnomer for this sandwich shop. I had the Shakedown which is a yummy sliced turkey breast topped with roasted red peppers and a pesto that mingles with the mayo to make a magical taste combo. The jalapeño and cheddar chips were also quite good, although personally I like a bit more heat in my jalapeño chips. I ordered with several other family members, and they also found their sandwiches to be very tasty. The food almost makes up for the abusive treatment you receive from the staff...almost. I did have a large order to place, and since I was picking it up at lunchtime, I gave them my order in person at 10:30, before they weren't yet slammed for the lunch rush. The gentleman who took my order was very inconvenienced by my patronage and seemed rather disinterested in providing me with any sort of courtesy. When I asked if they carried unsweetened iced tea, he replied, "I don't really care". Then, halfway through my order he asked me what kind of tip I was planning on giving. This employee, it seemed, was going out of his way to make my experience an unpleasant one. It was as if I was being punished for placing a large order; completely uncalled for and incredibly unwise for a business. The Grateful Deli is probably the smallest sandwich shop I've ever seen. A few steps up and into the place and you realize just how valuable real estate is in Aspen. There is table seating outside only and all the food is packaged for take out. I had the Garcia sandwich. Turkey, bacon, sprouts, avocado, banana peppers, lettuce and tomato. I substituted yellow mustard for the mayo that is standard on the Garcia. I went with the wheat baguette for bread. Nicely done, gents. The counter service was helpful and friendly and our order was out in a jiffy. No complaints from anyone in our party. Boulder chips and an array of cooler beverages round out the menu offering. If you happen to be in Aspen and don't want to spend and arm and a leg on lunch, try this place out. read more

After camp and/or sleeping in our van for the past week in CO, my friend and I were looking for a cheaper yet delicious restaurant to dive into while we stopped for a day in Aspen. Our goal: find Aspen's best kept secret. We found it. Overall both our sandwiches were amazing and huge for how much we spent for them. My friend got a turkey red pepper panini and could hardly finish it, while I got a turkey pesto sandwich and could only eat half even if I wished I could finish it. The bread made both sammies fantastic with how soft filling and fresh yet not overpowering they were. The pesto was fresh and flavorful. Damn just damn. I wish we had a Grateful Deli in Denver! Their sandwiches have a lot more interesting toppings than your average sub shop (not just ham and cheese, turkey and mayo, etc.). They also have a decent vegetarian selection. I got the Shakedown, and the pesto really made the sandwich. We wanted to go to Sabra Deli, but found that is was either out of business or had moved to an undisclosed location. After talking to a local, we were directed to grateful deli. It is small and cramped inside and has very limited seating outside. My first impression was shock, the man taking orders was pretty rude and abrupt with some people trying to decide what to eat. I was tempted to leave, but my hunger over-ruled. I ordered a pretty basic roast beef sub and my husband had the terpin. Both were good and plentiful. Would I go here again? I think it would depend on my mood. If I was super hungry and wanted a big sandwich, then maybe I would take a little abuse, but generally I like to go to places that are happy to have me. read more

Had a ham and Swiss sandwich on a sub roll. Not sure what all the fuss is over their sandwiches. Mine was pretty ordinary. Back home in Los Angeles I probably would give it 2 stars. Too much bread for the amount of fixins inside. Sandwich was definitely good but not great. Don't like how they just hand you the sandwich in a paper container wrapped in cellophane . No bag and get your own napkins and other accessories . It's a very small place and they are very busy . I guess that's why they more or less throw the sandwich at you when it's ready . The Grateful Deli is always my first and last stop when in Aspen... especially in the summer when you grab a table (one of only a couple to grab mind you) outside. Not usually a huge sandwich fan, but Grateful Deli is my favorite lunch spot in aspen. They have a huge variety of breads, meats, cheeses, veggies and other toppings. You can get a hot panini or a cold french roll, and everything is good. Plus it is a cute little laid back spot, and a close walk to great sitting areas in downtown Aspen. Love it! read more

Friendly staff. Serving size is huge. We visited Aspen in mid May. Most shops and restaurants were still closed for the season. A big thank you to Grateful Deli for keeping their deli open during the off season. the owner made sure the sandwich was well packed for our hike. We ordered a vegetarian sandwich, it was fresh and did not get soggy even after several hours. We will visit this place again if we are in that area. read more

The very first place I found on my very first day ever in Aspen. Of the three staff, one person was friendly and sociable, one offered me tips on where to food shop over my stay, and the third quickly made me a roast beef and swiss panini that was a freakin' miracle.
