Just come here and eat! Family who operates the restaurant is fantastic. Food is off the charts! Lina offered a perfect chianti after asking what we may be eating. Stuffed mushrooms - perfect. Calabrese - nicely done. Chicken arrabbiata - medium 'heat' - was delicious. It was Giovanni's birthday, so a group gathered - all had been eating there for years and helped him celebrate. Trying to find a good restaurant in Austin to give us a reservation for 15 people is a nightmare. Luckily, Giovannis made it happen. We finally decided to go out of our area and we hit an extra special gem of a restaurant. Giovannis is probably the best Italian restaurant we have been to in Austin & beyond. This is an awesome family restaurant where you feel like you have gone to dinner at a family member's home. They are very friendly and love to have easy & friendly banter. We will go back often so we can try every single item on the menu. Don't expect a microwave dinner taste where all the sauces taste the same. This Italian food is fresh & hot and delicious! We had fresh salads, fried mozzarella cheese sticks, and meals that ranged from shrimp scampi, veal dishes, unbelievable lasagna, spaghetti & fettuccine Alfredo, finishing with one couple who were so full but still ordered the tiramisu, the best they ever tasted. The fresh bread is fantastic. If we lived in Austin, I can honestly say we would eat at Giovannis table at least once a week. read more

I read the good reviews and was looking forward to trying Giovanni's but was very disappointed. The place is a small hole-in-the-wall with no atmosphere, which is okay, because we went for the food. Ordered Chicken Parmesan. Got a plate with a bit of spaghetti, sparsely topped with tomato sauce with a chicken cutlet on the side generously topped with cheese. One small piece of bread per person. Food was okay but not great and definitely not a big meal. The service was not friendly and not attentive. No smiles from the servers. No welcome. Forget beverage refills. Forget server checking to see if you need anything. Couldn't even get a server's attention, except when she took our order and then another server quickly plunked down our entrees and turned away. We had to go to a vacant table to get silverware and napkins. Had to flag the server down to get the check. The prices are comparable to other Italian restaurants - Chicken Parmesan was $16 - but what you get is so much less at Giovanni's. I had enough to eat, but the 2 big guys I dined with left hungry. No one thanked us or asked us to come back. And I won't. It wasn't bad food but the service was poor and there are so many places with $16 meals that offer so much more. read more

This is our second visit to this restaurant. The food was just "ok", nothing special. Salads, green and Caesar, were below average (dressings tasted terrible). Spaghetti and meatballs was fresh and acceptable. The main downside to this establishment is, tables are small and on top of each other and the service is slow and forgetful. Excellent family-owned, Italian restaurant . The Margherita Pizza, Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo, and Eggplant Parm were all very good. The sauce on the eggplant and spaghetti was a little on the salty side, but still delicious. The Limonchello Mascarpone dessert was amazing! We came in on a weekday so it wasn't that busy, but everything came out good and fresh. This place is worth a visit if you're around Austin and want some good Italian! read more

Our family of 3 had not been to Giovannis before. What a wonderful experience! Great family owned business that we will definitely visit again!!! We started with an order of cheese bread and garlic knots. Both were outstanding. We had a happy hour Pinot Noir with a generous pour. AWESOME!!! We had a wonderful Caprese salad - the best since our trip to Northern Italy. I am pretty sure he is using the hard-to-get Buffalo Mozzarella that makes all the difference!!! Our meal was Lasagna, Spaghetti and Meatballs, and Penne Bolognese. We cleaned our plates! The chef was sooooo excited and made an announcement that this was the most people dining in since Covid hit. We all applauded. Before I continue, I have to say that I NEVER complain about restaurants. Im just not that picky. But I am compelled to write about this place. I took my boyfriend and his son here yesterday for his birthday. We were looking forward to trying a new place, and this had some very good reviews (albeit only 15 reviews total). The owner greeted us and was very upbeat and kind. The waitress acted like she really did not want to be there. We ordered our food and received what looked like beautiful delicious bread! It was awful. It was so very stale and flavorless...even coating it in olive oil didn't help. Next up came our calamari. Again, we were so disappointed. It was obviously frozen, and felt like eating fried giant rubber bands. Between the 3 of us we couldn't eat 1/4 of the plate. I ordered the Bee Cave Special which was "grilled" chicken, shrimp and broccoli. The broccoli was not fresh (frozen and then boiled), the chicken was flattened to paper thin and was so overcooked and flavorless I could not eat it. The shrimp was edible, and thats about it. My boyfriends lasagna was mostly cheese and very thin. He couldn't eat it. His sons spaghetti and meatballs were average, and were gobbled up as he was starving. Ugh, just a terrible experience. The owner came by and stated "hey everything good, yes?". We were afraid if we complained we would get yelled at, LOL, so we actually just said nothing at all. We really expected more after spending $60. We went home and ate cake and snacks because we were still hungry. I would not recommend this place to anyone. :( read more

Yum! If you're looking for a great alfredo sauce (and their bolognese is excellent too), this is the place to go. We went 2 times in a single week in February because I had to go back and get the fettuccine carbonara again. And, my husband liked his bite of my fettuccine so much that he ordered fettuccine alfredo with chicken on our second visit. I did ask on my second visit for the amount of pancetta to be less or for the existing amount to be cut smaller because the big pieces were just too much for my taste (too fatty) and I ended up pushing it aside. But, DAMN...sooo good both times (and even better the second time)!! read more

What a shame that these people can cook so well and be so clueless on service. Came in on a busy Saturday evening. We waited for a table as two were finished but didn't receive their check. We decided to order BEFORE we were seated...over an hour later we received our food. The wife was the only server for the entire restaurant. I watched as each table received one or two orders and the others came 5 to 10 minutes later. At one point there were 6 un-bussed tables. The daughter who is very sweet would walk by all of the tables and leave them. We saw 3 parties walk in an walk out. Every party was obviously perturbed at the service. Again, the food is good but I will never go back to due to the wait. This was the same at their previous restaurant. Hire some more help in the kitchen, bar, and restaurant!!! If this is the norm Giovannis will suffer the same fate as their last restaurant. read more

Sadly the feel of this place was the best part of it. Ambiance of a classic Italian spot was a great start. Service was blah. A total of 10 words were said to us the whole time. For me the food is very much lacking. Had lunch w my brother. We shared a chicken parm wedge and spaghetti and meatballs. The lack of sauce on both was odd and left me questioning the rest of the meal. The sauce we did get was bland. Meatballs were lacking flavor and I wont say for sure they were frozen but it would not shock me. Chix parm was ok, crisp bread but no sauce? Flavor was mediocre at best. Love to support local business and this is family owned but sorry it has to be good for me to eat there. We need a good Italian spot like this in the area but this one misses the target and will not last long. read more
