Lunch time
Shammy S.

Great Vietnamese food. Fresh and tasty meal with quick service. We had a mix of appetizers and mains and everything was very good.

Ginger is a no-nonsense Vietnamese fast food restaurant with some Thai and Chinese dishes on the menu. They offer a lot of the typical Vietnamese fare, like pho, spring rolls, and grilled meats on rice or noodles. I ordered Curry Chicken with Pad Thai noodles. It seemed like a good idea at the time but the flavours didn't really go together very well. The curry chicken (white meat) was very good on its own. The Pad Thai was served deconstructed, noodles with sauce, and them bean sprouts. carrots, and shredded cabbage all separated. The Pad Thai part of the dish was also okay on its own, although not very authentic, but the two halves never really came together. If the noodles were cooked with a curry sauce, it would have been a very good cohesive dish. Fast food? I ordered and paid at the counter, grabbed my utensils, and chose a table near the window. By the time I took off my jacket, my food was delivered to the table. I observed this at several other tables. Wooosh! The portions are also very generous. I actually didn't finish my meal because I was stuffed. Maybe I'll order takeout next time.

This place has been our go-to Vietnamese fast food restaurant since the early 2000s. It is mostly self service when it comes to getting your own cutlery, napkins, water, and condiments, but the food is amazing. I usually order the the Deep fried fish and mango on steamed rice and spicy grilled chicken on steamed rice. The food is served fast and freshly cooked. I have tried several other dishes at this location in the past and have never been disappointed. They also offer a 10% off discount if you order food over $15 (before tax) and pay by cash. That is why I will keep going to this place again and again whenever I am in the area.

Small papaya salad with two vegetarian spring rolls.

I've been a loyal customer of Ginger since I was a teenager (spoiler alert, that was 10+ years ago). They've been providing Toronto with delicious, fast and inexpensive Vietnamese food since 2005 and I know I'm not alone in my dedication. Normally, it's hard to tear me away from their tofu vermicelli because I think it's perfection in a bowl. However, I've recently tried the papaya salad (pictured here) and found it to be a healthy but still satisfying lunch when I'm looking for something lighter. Either way, I'm not leaving without a spring roll (or two). Most meals will cost you less than $15 and will have you feeling like you ate a home cooked meal in the middle of downtown. It's not the place to visit if you're looking for something fancy or fine dining service but it fills a need and in my opinion, does it well.

The place and servers are definitely not the best. They are rude, don't really talk to you and the place is dark and not comfortable. Buuuuuut, they have good pho (Vietnamese soup) and cheap and good fresh spring rolls. Each one would cost an average of $1.50 and comes with a delicious agridoce sauce. If you need a fast lunch, need to grab a snack to go or want a healthy choice but want something cheap, then this is the place!

A very great place for a quick eat at the heart of yonge dundas square. Would love to come again.

Ginger is the last place I will be expecting myself going for a quick Pho fix. But when it is -20C outside and you are at Yonge and Bloor and having something warm and slurping delicious just sound too tempting to ignore! So we decide to give Ginger a try with an open mind. Yes the noodle is not the fresh type. Yes the Pho broth might not be the most balanced one with star anise Yes that sweetening taste in the Pho broth might be a sign of MSG Yes the rare beef might not be the best cut Yes the self served area for utensils and chili might not be the most hygienic But me and my friend both has an enjoyable dinner, stuffing ourselves with Rare Beef Pho and Hot and Sour Noodle Soup... and we did not regret that we eat here! The service here was friendly and efficient!! In and Out with no fuss! Cheap, Fast, Fulfilling, Reliable and Simple. Ginger really does well in all these departments... Sometimes that's what I want in my meal... or even in my life?

Ginger Ginger! Why haven't I reviewed yet?? I have no idea. Let's start with the service: Nothing special, nothing to brag about. Just your typical pay and go or pay and chill to eat. Service is just "okay" Now onto really what matter most, THE FOOD! Regardless if you're big eater or just an average eater you are guaranteed to be satisfied with a tasty meal. Ginger this is where you shine. Usually I get the lemongrass beef on fried or steam rice or I might get the chicken with black bean sauce. Quality: Both chicken and the beef were cooked to perfection and absolutely ZERO fatty parts which is awesome! Easy to chew and I cannot complain about either. Rice: If you get the fried or steamed you really can't go wrong. Both go very well with the meat and it's really your preference on if you rather steam or fried. Keep in mind it's 1.00 extra for fried. The black bean sauce was the highlight and the flavor really took over everything. I wish there was an option to get black been sauce with the beef. Portion: If you're spending 10.00 on a meal, that meal better be big enough to keep you satisfied for the next 4 hrs. Ginger you definitely accomplished this. I would recommend Ginger to anyone who wants to try some Vietnamese food or just want a good rice meal. They're subs are great as well. Portion- good Quality - good Price - good based on the portion Service - blah. Environment - not great but not bad. It's a busy resturant and I guess it's hard for the staff to keep all tables clean but I've seen worst. So its

Hot & Sour Pad Thai Chicken, $6.95
It was neither hot, nor sour. It's ok.
Jane R.

I've been here twice for dinner. The first time, I got the chicken lemon grass pad thai. It was ok. It's cheap and it filled me up. The second time, I got shrimp pad thai, I was a bit disappointed. It was almost flavourless. The place is small and they have a variety of what you can order. I mean, if you need to fill your tummy, you can't go wrong with this place. I will try their pho next time or other dishes they have, but I think this will not be the place I will hit up again for pad thai.

Pam C.

Ordered the chicken curry pad thai. Big mistake. They should rename their pad thai to 'noodles with ketchup' because that's what it tasted like. Noodles seriously tasted like they had straight-up ketchup for sauce. Ended up drowning it in the brown hoisin sauce from the counter to make it even edible. Sooo cheap but I was a little annoyed I paid anything at all for the pad thai. I've had their pho and their rice dishes and they are all pretty good, especially for the price. Stay away from the pad thai but definitely try their other options!

This place is always busy. I was waiting to be seated but waiters ignored me. Spoons and chopsticks didn't look clean. I don't recommend pho. Vermicelli or other noodle menus looked way better than pho.

Hot and Sour Chicken Noodle Soup (small)
Josephine N.

My go-to place for comfort food! I have been frequenting this place for years! Food: 4/5 I always always always get their hot and sour chicken noodle soup. It's sour but not spicy, and is so comforting on a cold or rainy day. It comes with chicken, bean sprouts, vermicelli, onion, bamboo shoots, and cilantro so if you're not a big fan of cilantro (like me), you can ask them to skip the cilantro. Portion: 4/5 Noodles comes in two sizes, small and large. I get the small, which is a pretty good portion. Price: 5/5 Cheap, considering the area! The small is $7.75 and the large is $8.75. This is one of the few places at Yonge and Bloor where you can get a filling meal for less than 10 bucks. Service: 4/5 You order and pay at the counter, they give you a number, you grab utensils from the utensils counter, and find a table. They will bring you your food. The service is SO FAST! I once had my noodles reach my table the same time I do. Environment: 2/5 Very busy! There is usually a line, especially at lunch and dinner times. Ritual is a good option if you don't want to wait. There are tables for 2/6/8. Be prepared to share a table with other groups. This place is not exactly sparkling clean but it's what I would expect from a restaurant serving food at this price point.

Good prices for location. The rice dishes are not the best, but the Pho is ok. Good place just for a quick bite.

Food was excellent and service was accommodating. I had beef rib pho and complimentary warm tea. The sauce to go with the beef rib was quite good. I got the rest of the pho to go, as it was a huge serving. It was a bit of a challenge trying to put the contents of the huge bowl into the takeout containers and I imagine other people have this same issue. Will definitely be back. Next time I'd like to try their banh xeo and com sườn bì chả.

They specialize in meat platters where you can create DIY fresh rolls. The platters come with lettuce, mints, vermicelli, rice paper and house special sauce. They also have pho, rice, and vermicelli dishes as well. Washrooms are located downstairs which are not accessible. They only accept cash (with a 10% cash discount) or debit. I previously have had Anh Dao for take out before - their pork sausages (nem nuong) are delicious and perfect when you wrap them with vermicelli and fresh herbs. Even when I got take out, the restaurant gives you plenty of fresh ingredients to create your own fresh rolls. I recently went to Anh Dao for lunch to dine in at the restaurant on a Friday around 12:30pm. The place was pretty quiet as it seemed like I was their first customer that day. During my time there, there was another party of 2 that also came in to eat lunch. I opted for the house special soup pho ($19.95). Service was friendly and my food came at a reasonable time after I ordered. The house special pho included slice rare beef, beef brisket, beef balls, and tripe. The soup was slightly sweet with a nuttier flavour. The noodles were unfortunately not the fresh kind but there were ample beef ingredients in the bowl of pho for the price you are paying. I love how in addition to siracha and hoisin sauce, there is also ground up chili sauce as well as a pickled sliced garlic and jalapeno pepper mixture at the table. Moreover, you get bean spouts, a red chili pepper, fresh herbs, and lime that you can add to your pho broth. Overall, a tasty bowl of pho where the quality of the beef was good. Anh Dao is a tasty option for Vietnamese food in the College and Spadina area. Definitely do try their meat platters as they are quite delicious!

I tried to finish the broth because it was so good. I would have given that first bowl 4 stars! Today was terrible! It just felt like a super water-downed broth that I didn't want to drink. Everything was just boiled and dumped in a water-downed soup base. The least they can do is use broth and dump it in the seafood tomato based soup. This was a 9pm dinner. They had their own family visiting to close up shop at 11. I tried asking them what happened to the broth today but they didn't speak English or just decided not to. It was disappointing for a bowl of $21 + tax noodle that was just pretty bland tonight even though it looked the part.... Sigh 2 stars today but couldn't average it out to 3 because now I remembered the spring rolls from the first visit were soggy Yes they are friendly but don't know if it's a place you should come before 7pm to catch the good broth?

The dry noodle dishes under the green column use egg noodles & those under the brown use rice noodles but the toppings & sauce are the same. The soup was pretty tasty with a natural sweetness, 2 springy half fishballs & a large, very fresh shrimp. The sauce was basically oyster sauce but pickled garlic, red vinegar, hoi sin & chili sauce were available to add complexity. The noodles weren't wet but were not dry either. Large was a very big bowl it came with minced pork, thin sliced pork beansprouts & greens. The pickled garlic was good. Also got a shrimp fritter on the side for $2.50.
