When my friend and I decided to have dinner before seeing a show, she told me she had to go vegan and gave me some dining options. Without much thought, I chose Gather. We started off our meal with drinks. The current cocktail menu seems to favor gin and vodka. Neither spirit is my first choice for a cocktail base, so it really limited my options. That turned out to be a wonderful thing because I decided to try the Rhuby Roses. It's a lovely yellow cocktail comprised of rhubarb liqueur, Four Roses bourbon, lime, Vya vermouth, pineapple gum, and Regan's orange bitters. It was incredibly well balanced and delicious. I liked it so much, I had two. My friend had to avoid alcohol, so she opted to have tea. It seemed like they had some really good options. The current vegan charcuterie plate is really nice. I liked all four offerings (turnip, rutabaga, carrot, Jerusalem artichoke), but was especially struck by the smoky flavors in the carrot and Jerusalem artichoke focused offerings. I also wondered why the rutabaga potion was so small compared to the other three. It was really delicious and I wanted more than the one mouthful I got. My friend chose to have soup and salad for her main. The celery root soup (with apple, preserved lemon, olive oil, and hazelnut) was very satisfying. I especially loved the texture, which was rich and creamy. You would never know it was vegan, unless you were told. The salad of local lettuces was beautiful, mostly due to the vibrant greens and sliced beets. I opted to have a burger. Gather's is exceptional. The bun, which was the perfect size for the Prather ranch beef patty, was delicious, as were the house toppings. I also really liked the fries (cut thin!) and the tomato jam that accompanies them. I didn't make much headway on the greens that came with it. They were good, but really ordinary compared with all the other lovely vegetable options. I have always had good service at Gather. The servers and other staff always keep a brisk pace, so you never feel ignored (nor do you feel rushed - it's more like efficiency), but I've never thought any of them, with the exception of one of the bartenders, were particularly warm. That changed last night. Our server was genuinely nice and chatted with us a bit (while still maintaining that brisk pace). I think that is what I've been missing in my previous visits. On the edge of the bustling University Ave area, this is another Californian-style place, with a lot of focus on fresh local produce. We sat at the bar as we waited for our friends, and found it to have a rather friendly atmosphere -- definitely not a bad place to get dinner if the dining rooms happen to be too busy. Once our friends arrived and we got seated, we got started with the vegan "charcuterie" platter. It was pretty, well-presented and definitely highlighted the vegetables very well. I would really suggest getting this if you want a taste of the chef's creativity. We then got 2 pizzas to share amongst 4 people. We took my daughter here for her Birthday. It's one of her favorite places. My husband eats meat; I'm a vegetarian; and my daughter is a vegan. Perfect fit. We ordered the Good Faith Farm Olives from the Starter Menu & they were tangy & delicious. (I had a mocktail, which had honey, orange & chai in it. It was also yummy). My daughter ordered a very nice Sparkling Rosé. We all shared food - except my husband's steamed local halibut - and everything was amazing. We had a spicy tomato pizza, heirloom grain risotto, and chickpea paninne. OMG, all were so good that um...we ate everything! Probably one of my favorite restaurants at Berkeley - where there's definitely a lot of tough competition. After coming here a few times, I think I realized the key here is to order the thing that sounds the most unappetizing. Their pizzas are great, but they really excel in their vegetable-focused dishes. The first time I came here, I had a beet dish that was so good that I became obsessed with beets and picked it up everytime when I went grocery shopping for 6 months after. (This is unfortunately not on the current menu.) Anyway, here is what we got in order of how much we liked them: Cracked Wheat Porridge (V)- It sounded so weird that we had to try it. This was the most delicious thing we had eaten all night. It was creamy, savory, had just a bit of acidity and the vegetable toppings were roasted perfectly. We devoured this. Crispy Brussel Sprouts - HOW DO THEY MAKE BRUSSEL SPROUTS TASTE LIKE THIS?? HOW??? Monterey Black Cod - The fish was perfectly cooked - crispy skin on the outside and soft and gelatinous (sorry I don't really know how to describe this flatteringly, but it was good) on the inside. If you're looking for some delicious and original pizzas, Gather is the place to be. My friend and I came on a Sunday night and were seated right away. The restaurant sports a rustic and relaxed ambiance. I loved the open pizza kitchen concept and the jars of pizza ingredients littered all over the restaurant. The restaurant also has a focus on farm to table food with blackboards hanging on top of the kitchen that lists what local farms the ingredients are sourced from. The menu featured no more than a handful of well thought out options for each course. Everything on the menu was unique in that I've never seen the same exact dish at another restaurant. The restaurant also uses seasonal ingredients which means that there's always new dishes to try. My friend and I each got a drink shortly after we sat down - iced lemon tea and ginger honey soda. I highly recommend the ginger honey soda. It's very refreshing and comes with a spicy kick. We were also craving pizza that day, so we got the Roasted Corn pizza to share. It's a white pizza with fresh toppings including roasted corn, cherry tomatoes, ricotta, chile Serrano and scallions. This was delicious and definitely hit the spot for me. The tomatoes were sweet and bursting with juices and the chili surprisingly went well with the pizza too. I loved that all the ingredients were super fresh and there was just the right amount to keep the flavors balanced and delicate. Besides the toppings, I was a fan of the crust. It was light and airy with the perfect crunch on the edges. I also loved that the crust was perfectly seasoned, which made it taste good by itself too! We had our extended family in town for a major event and wanted to give them a great dinner experience to welcome them to Berkeley. The outdoor patio at Gather was the obvious perfect spot. It's so beautiful back there, weather and temperature controlled by the roof and heat lamps, food is unique and consistently amazing. The Gather staff were super helpful in terms of reserving a large enough table for all of us and suggesting a good assortment of options we could pre-order off the menu for the group. It as easy to find good options for family members who needed gluten free and dairy free -- we ordered an assortment pizzas, chicken, grain bowls, cauliflower, fries, and salted chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches for dessert. Everyone raved about the food. My brother in law was still talking about that chicken a week later! The staff was delightful which made the energy around the entire patio area feel light and festive. Really enjoyed just about everything about Gather. In a town full of varied and interesting restaurants, this on really stands out. The ambiance was really enjoyable. The design is warm and inviting, with most things made of local reclaimed materials such as beams and lumber salvaged from a local mill, and bench cushions painstakingly sewn from old belts(!). The menu seems to be custom designed every day based on what local, seasonal ingredients are available at the moment. The creative and delicious recipes they dreamed up for us were delicious. The wait staff was polite, knowledgeable and very professional. On the rare occasion that they could not answer my obscure question about the ingredients of one of the dishes, they went off in search of an answer and came back promptly to fill me in. Wow, ever since I've moved to Berkeley, I've passed by the "Gather" sign numerous times, peering inside to see the beautiful hanging lights and fancy dining. I have to say that it's a lot more affordable than I thought and you get a lot more for your money! Not just with the food, but the ambience, the wonderful service, and "would you like regular or sparkling water?" That definitely sold it. I brought the family and they said that this place is by far their favorite brunch place I've taken them. Cheaper than La Note with the same classy feel, this place offers enough of the classic breakfast foods with more unique dishes in their simple menu. The French toast was absolutely delightful, not just to look at too. It surprisingly didn't feel too heavy and it was perfect for sharing. The walnuts were a perfect addition. This is definitely a must try. $15 is pricey but this is the best French toast I've had. The Country breakfast and Market omelette were pretty generic. I actually didn't like the cheese they used for the omelette and wished that they put more mushrooms. The house potatoes were great, and the bacon was...well, bacon. Bacons awesome always! Especially when made not too crispy. The brunch pizza looked beautiful and I was surprised they put two eggs on top. I was a little sad that most of the yolk ran off in the process of me eating it, but it was delicious nonetheless. TLDR: Just mediocre. Feels like a relic of the past. Came here for a group dinner (group of 25) on a Wednesday night. They offer prix fixe menu for big groups at $44 a person not including drinks, which I think is a great price. We got 8 things: kale salad, bolinas lettuce, brussel sprouts with cashews, mozzarella pizza, spicy tomato pizza, roasted chicken, heirloom grains risotto, and chocolate torte. We were also allowed to order two drinks per person (idk how much extra charge this was). I got the Red Wedding cocktail and a rose. Out of the salads, the kale salad and brussel sprouts were the better ones. I thought the kale pieces were far too large, but it wasn't tough and the vinaigrette used went nicely with the kale. As for the brussel sprouts, most roasted brussel sprouts taste good, but it was the cashew sauce that was unique and flavorful. Bolinas lettuce was highly forgettable; the thin vegetables slices were pretty though. Pizzas were pretty decent, but not really looking to eat pizza at this kind of dinner. The roasted chicken was slightly dry and meat itself was flavorless while the sauce on the outside was nice. I thought the heirloom grains risotto was nice (because I hate mushrooms and it didn't taste like mushrooms even though it had mushrooms), but I don't think it used its ingredients well. The dessert was yummy because it had braised cherry sauce on the the bottom that added contrast through tartness. But overall, nothing was memorable. There's nothing about the meal that made me think, and nothing that I am urging to eat again. It's not enough to have locally sourced ingredients, there needs to be more excitement with the food. The overall restaurant is quite pretty though with the bar on the side and back patio next to it. It has a half open kitchen.. not really sure what they were going for by doing that. Came here for dinner with a few friends, and had semi-high expectations since I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time. I knew it would be pricey per past reviews, but it was a "treat yoself" kind of day. Inside, they have a homey, inviting environment that's dimly lit. Feels nice and homey :) I ordered the halibut and the soup of the day: chilled asparagus soup. The chilled asparagus soup was surprisingly delicious! Perfectly creamy and had just the right balance of crab and salmon roe to not overall the soup. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and even more so since it was a warm day. The halibut was somewhat disappointing. The balance of flavors was great but I found the fish itself not as great as it can be. The exterior was a bit too overdone, and thus took away from the moisture of the fish. The citrus flavors saved this dish though! Probably won't order again but glad I tried it. The menu consists of what' are generally regarded as "comfort" foods, but every ingredient is carefully selected and thoughtfully prepared that they provide an elevated level of comfort! Our group shared the spicy tomato pizza which was different from other pizzas we have had before - it was delicious! I had a falafel burger which was mouthwatering, had a crunch, and juicy at the same time. My boyfriend had a hamburger and he said it was the best he's had in a long time; he could tell the quality of the beef was high especially because he ordered it medium rare. The soup, cauliflower appetizer, and non-alcoholic toddy were deliciously complex. It was a birthday outing among friends, made a lot more special and happy not only by the food but the level of attention from the wait staff. Gather reminds me (I'm dating myself here) of Hobees with a farm to fresh schtick. Generally a breakfast brunch place I presume but they have solid Zah and burger on the menu too. Parking car-ma in full effect as I circled the block once then pulled in right out front just as a thundershower commenced. They recommend calling for reservations. Which we didn't but wound up sitting at the chefs counter... ahh bar...aaah what ever! Bae wanted breakfast, #2 son wanted lunch, so this was perfect. Choice. She got he polenta with poached egg and shared the donuts with all. The donuts were reminiscent of Portuguese donuts. Denser than beignets. #2 got bacon burger. Not worth 20+ bucks but the fries were awesome. I got the Zah with homemade sausage and pancetta. I think the crust was semolina, it had a crunch and bite like that. It was solid Zah for sure. Sitting at the chef bar we noticed one of the chefs assembling complicated soup, Ramen style. He offered us a sample of the smoked leek soup which was really rich and creamy. They feature various cocktails and micro brew along with coffee, juices etc. The staff was hustling and bustling, the chefs busy creating yummy dishes. There is an outdoor patio, not being used due to the weather. But with 180 of window facing the stadium, it gets lots of light inside. My wife, daughter and myself met at Gather today for lunch. The menus arrived after a few minutes, and the wait staff a few minutes after that. We ordered the Seasonal Frittata ($19), a Marin Sun Farms Cheeseburger ($22), and the Spicy Tomato Pizza ($23), a coffee, and I ordered a hot black tea (served Earl Grey - a flavored tea, not what I was looking for) The burger was ordered without cheese, and arrived with cheese. The server seemed a little perplexed, despite everyone having heard it ordered without cheese. The burger had decent condiments, but the patty itself was completely flavorless. The meat was neither salted nor seasoned, nor charred to add flavor. The fries were not piping hot and crisp. There was no salt, pepper, or sugar on the table, and it was necessary to hunt down staff to get anything. The pizza was delicious, and the high point of the meal. The frittata was okay, and the salad was barely dressed. The bill as presented was $80, and despite the disorganization the staff was cheerful and pleasant, so a 20% tip brought it to $96. That was not a $96 meal. The price did not translate into the expected quality of food, or service. read more

In the past four years I've been at Berkeley, I can't believe I've only been here twice! It was a little difficult making a reservation by phone because the it wouldn't connect to the hostess, but I was able to leave a voicemail. However, this doesn't guarantee the reservation so I walked in anyway just to be sure. I made a reservation for 4 people at 7:30pm, but was able to go in a little early ~7:10pm. We ordered the following: Drinks - housemade citrus soda (?) Starters - little gem salad, mussels, lamb ragout Pizza - pork sausage Main - half chicken Desserts - bread pudding, bourbon chocolate cake, ice cream sundae Everything was absolutely delicious, though the half chicken was a little dry. Our favorite was the bread pudding - it was moist and very well paired with cream. The sundae tasted very floral, wasn't really my cup of tea. I would avoid the housemade citrus soda because it literally tasted like orange juice diluted with sparkling water - not worth your money. The servers were great as well. They definitely point you in the right direction to cater to your preferences. Our total came up to about $160 for 4 people (not including tip). So if you're looking for a restaurant sitting at the $$ to $$$ price range, this is perfect! This is a great restaurant for date night/upscale dinner with family. This is a brunch review. I've been to Gather a number of times for dinner and brunch, and found both to be good. However, I would pick this place more for brunch. The brunch choices are limited, but what they do serve, is excellent. They eggs are high quality, as is apparent from the deep yellow color of the eggs. The beignets are amazing as well. Some of the portions are small relative to the price, so set your expectations accordingly. If the day is nice, I recommend that you try to sit on the patio. Our server today was amazing. A very good find in Berkeley! Good ambiance and cocktails. Good for pizzas, burgers, and healthy grain bowls. Pepperoni pizza was good and falafel burger was satisfying. It was because it was outside of the city. Will come again to try other things on the menu! read more

I sent an email on 10/3 regarding my 10/2 visit-since I've heard nothing back, I'm posting it here: "I was at Gather yesterday evening for dinner-we arrived around 6pm or so. We had eaten there in the past and had a great experience and really enjoyed the food, service, and setting. Unfortunately we did not have the same experience yesterday. There was someone serving who had blue dreads and they were soooo high that they could barely function. I understand that weed is legal and that this is Berkeley, however I don't know any place that allows people to be under the influence when they are working. Their dreads were not tied back and they were getting into food as they were delivering it. They also had the food touching their body as they weren't paying any attention to it. Prior to our food arriving, they tried to deliver several other meals to us that weren't part of our order-like actually tried to put all of the food on our table and insist that it was ours (one was several plates of burgers and there were two of us-they obviously weren't ours). When my pizza arrived, it didn't have cheese (I added cheese to the spicy tomato pizza)-that server took it back to fix it, but then seconds later Blue Dreads brought it back and told me it had cheese and insisted on putting it on the table. I was looking at it very carefully as I couldn't see cheese anywhere-so they said very rudely "would you like MORE cheese?!" I looked again as there was not any visible cheese and they said "I'll take it back and tell them you want MORE cheese!" and then stormed away. When they brought it back, it had cheese and they said "here is your pizza with EXTRA cheese!" They were so rude that I wasn't about to say anything about the dreads getting in my pizza... Our table was also very unstable-one of the servers put something under a leg to fix it, but whatever it was didn't stay. Our bottle of wine fell off and broke (just the neck broke off-it didn't shatter). No one came for the glass-my daughter picked it all up. No one checked on us again the rest of the time we were there. We finally gave up and left. It was a VERY disappointing experience. My daughter and I both have lots of restaurant experience and have never seen anything like this!" read more

The menu was not what I was expecting, but it was pretty solid. I ordered the burger (with no fries, I was being good that night and I totally regret it). I also got myself a cocktail... completely blanking on the name right now but it was very smooth and I def did NOT realize how tipsy I was until I stood up. Can't wait to try more of the menu! I've only come here during my poor college days and could only afford to split the pizza here with friends haha. It's pretty decent pizza although I would rather just walk down and around the corner to get pizza at sliver for much cheaper. This place is bougie AF (which is not a bad thing at all) so if that's your cup of tea, then go for it!! I can't judge the place otherwise on food since I haven't tried much here. But I do have to say I'm a bit disappointed in gather because the hours posted on Yelp AND what was said on the phone when we called were not indicative to when they ACTUALLY closed... My boyfriend and I tried coming here tonight at 9 pm. Let me just preface this with we drove all the way from Dublin to try this place tonight. We checked on Yelp and it said it closes at 9:30. We called to make sure and the automated voice said the hours are until 10 pm. So we figured we were in the clear. We get there at 9 pm only to find that it was closed! Such a bummer since we drove 35-40 minutes to come here. But never fear! Sliver is here to save the day!! lol we ended up having to go to sliver to eat dinner and then drive home. Needless to say, I'm pretty sad I came all the way here just to leave empty handed :/ I know I shouldn't be frustrated with the restaurant but c'mon...at least be on top of updating either the Yelp page or your phone's automated messages about your hours to when your hours ACTUALLY are.
