I tried sundae when I was traveling in Korea and was excited to see they also have sundae here so of course I ordered the sundae guk as well as dogani tang. We also tried the peach makgeolli. Their banchan consists of kimchee and radish. I love their kimchee, I wish they cut their radishes into smaller pieces so they are easier to eat, I felt their radishes were a bit too big of a size. Ok. First, the parking gets PACKED! So plan accordingly as it may be busy when you arrive. Second, the interior is nicely designed; however the seating in some areas are not so desirable (I.e. near the door , in winter it gets drafty COLD!!). Best seats are by the window, back area you are next to either the bathroom, the kitchen or a party room (also so drafty!). So enough about the nuances, let's talk about the food. Unlike many other Korean places, they don't serve banchan (gratuitous side dishes of veggies or protein) except for kimchi. But OH MY KIMCHI, theirs is truly AUTHENTIC and savory, combined with radish kimchi, theirs is the traditional ttukbaegi (뚝배기) - fermented in a traditional Korean earthenware pot - kind of kimchi. IYKYK.. My guest and I ordered two traditional soups - one was Seolleongtang, a traditional Korean milky-white soup made by simmering ox bones, brisket, and other cuts for hours, creating a rich, creamy broth. Their version was somewhat rich, with pieces of brisket, noodles and the bottom swimming with rice which souped up the liquid toward the end. It is naturally bland so you need to add the salt provided as well as scallion, which is refreshing to the soup. Second dish was Yukgaejang, a spicy, savory Korean soup made with shredded beef, scallions, and other vegetables like bracken fern (gosari), clear potato noodles and bean sprouts, simmered in a rich, red chili-infused broth. WARNING : their version is SPICY!! I mean, I DO spicy but this was SUPER CAPCASIN-ed!! It's mostly due to the hot temperature of the soup that makes it ten times worse --once the soup cools you can really taste the savoriness! This dish comes with a side of white rice (no purple rice is available). Service is a little slow despite the restaurant not being super busy. Which was odd because the parking lot was FULL as commented before. When we were able to flag down a server/busser, we did get served with a smile - which was pleasant. Something wrong with the Kimchi, which used to be great, and Dogani Tang and Seolleong Tang were bad. Meats were not good, and soup wasn't giving any impressions. Their seafood pancake is solid. It is home made with mixed seafood that you can see and taste. Its better than some places that put a lot of flour and not much seafood. Their soup - Seollong tang was a good beef broth for this cold weather. It comes with a very small amount of sliced beef and even smaller amount of noodles which I'm ok with since I'm here for the broth. It usually comes with rice inside the soup but I asked for it on the side. I wanted something simple in ingredients and this is just right. If you want more flavor, you could add the scallions, salt and kimichi with radish in your soup which I did towards the end. The food came out pretty quickly as there weren't too many people for dinner on Friday night just yet however, they never came by to refill our water or check on us. The food is good but the service is a bit lacking. I came here for lunch on a rainy Sunday and surprisingly the place was pretty empty. But the front parking lot was full for some reason. There are additional spots in the back. Since we were a group of 7, they seated us in the room in the back. This was nice and private but also there is no call button and no one came to check up on us so whenever we needed something we had to yell or step out of the room to get someone's attention. They also kept forgetting things we asked for so we had to get up multiple times, which was inconvenient and disruptive. This could be easily solved with a call button and/or more attentive waitstaff. I also felt that our server was a bit cold/rude to us. Just the vibe wasn't very welcoming and she acted like she didn't want to be there. I ordered the seolleongtang, and it was pretty standard. Nothing amazing but not bad either. One weird thing is my rice came already in the soup... I prefer my rice on the side. If I had known, I might have specifically requested my rice on the side in advance. The Deluxe version comes with rice on the side. One thing about this soup is that you season it yourself- there's salt and pepper on the table. Season, taste, and add more until you like it (but do a little at a time bc it's not good if it's too salty.) They also give a big bowl of sliced scallion and I recommend adding a spoonful for the full experience. I also tried the cheese dolsamkim (basically kimchi/samgyupsal fried rice with cheese and corn, served in a hot stone pot so the rice gets crispy at the bottom). Kimchi was super fresh and sour but didn't love the radish that gave a bit of an after taste. Average tasting food at this restaurant. There appears to be a solid amount of patrons both eat in and take out. Was in town for a meeting so was short on time. They appear to be understaffed because at one point, the owner came from behind the register counter to help take orders from patrons seated waiting to have their food orders taken. We ordered 5 bibimbaps and 2 soups. The taste reviews was it was ok but not bad. The one thing that everyone did like a lot was the kimchi (reason for the 3rd star). I came here happy to see it in passing while I was shopping at Hmart in Fort Lee bc I used to go to the one in Manhattan with friends and family for years before it moved to a 2nd floor location in K-town. Well I'm definitely surprised to see the amount of negative reviews! This is a 24/7 restaurant people, we need this for late night eats in NJ! My experience was definitely contrary to others. Our wait staff was diligent and courteous. We ordered the seafood pancake, seoulleong tang, and seoulleong tang deluxe. The only ban chan was one medium dish of kimchi, so of course I'd want more. My seoulleong tang had the rice already in it, which made it look a lot fuller whereas the deluxe had rice on the side. Always a solid sellongtang spot! Recently came here and there was outdoor dining and indoor dining also started again in New Jersey (it seemed like they had place settings set up but no one was eating inside). They've expanded the outdoor seating area in the back parking lot. It's quaint and cozy! Even as the weather gets colder, a hot bowl of sellongtang would make it the perfect spot. They've always only ever given kimchi and kkakdugi so not sure why some would complain about other banchan dishes. Their bindaetteok is solid. It's crispy and smooth (rather than having a lot of whole mung beans inside). You can't go wrong with the sellongtang here! I had the gukbap and galbi tang too recently. Great beefy flavor, good quality beef, fresh veggies, the broth was spicy and had a great depth of flavor! The spicy chicken soup wasn't my favorite. Very bad and inexperienced service. This happened just now Sunday, September 29, 2024 around 12:30pm. I ordered for pick up got home and realized it was the wrong food. Called and they were quite rude and said there is nothing I could do. They asked if I can come in but told them I would appreciate if they could deliver the food. Since the food was not for myself, I went back to get the replacement order. But again the workers not feeling bad for what happened... I don't understand. If the restaurant messed up, I should be treated with more respect and offered something since I made another trip? Then I told them you should really have made the effort to try to deliver the food. Gam Mee Ok consistently delivers that warm bowl of tang when you need it. While it may not be the best sul lung tang available, they're consistently good, with good quality banchans, at a nicely decorated, clean and chic space. On a recent visit I tried their Gal Bi Tang (beef short rib soup) as I was struggling with a cold, and they delivered a TON of short ribs in the pot that I had to take them out onto a plate in order to eat the soup! Also ordered their Bin Dae Dduk (mungbean pancake) appetizer which was light, crispy, and tasty with the jalapeno soy sauce dip. I left feeling like a champ! Picked up my nephew from JFK and came here because it was the only place that is open 24 hrs. There were 2 older Korean waiters who made it look obvious that they were not happy to be there. No greetings. Not rude but very indifferent. Made me feel guilty that we were there late so they were forced to get up and serve us (both were casually sitting on chairs when I first walked in). Staff allows DRUNK customers to HARASS other customers here. I came here with my brother and elderly mother who is 74 on Wednesday at 7:30pm. There were a couple of drunk older men causing a disturbance and the staff did NOTHING to quiet them. Other customers left because they couldn't handle it anymore. The staff kept giving them alcohol. We asked the drunk men to quiet down and they apologized but then kept on yelling and cursing. We asked them to quiet down again and then they yelled and cursed at my mom. Really? Wtf? I yelled at them and called the police...the men were so drunk that they couldn't even stand straight or speak correctly. What did the staff do? Absolutely nothing. Oh wait. Actually they did one thing. The staff kept giving more alcohol to the drunk men before they ran away to avoid the police I had requested. Now the food. This was my first visit to NJ Gammeeok. Despite the high prices, the food was squarely mediocre at best. Sullungtang was not even piping hot. Strangely (probably to skimp on quantity), they serve RICE IN THE SOUP, which I have never seen before. That is not how it's usually done. The quality was certainly lacking, and the few pieces of meat were on the tough side. The worst part was the kimchi (the only side dish) which was nasty, like it was left out for a long time and the servers just poured some kimchi juice on top of leftover dried out kimchi. Gam Mee Ok had been my spot after morning jog since they used to open 24 hrs. Sadly, the pandemic made them open with limited operation. However, their quality and taste never disappointed me. I personally pick seolongtang, deluxe seolongtang, beef rib, and ox tail soup. They had a point to open this place for 24/7- the more bones are boiled, the more you get the flavorful taste from their broth. Then, the fresh cuts of beef, delivered from the local Korean based butcher daily, were served in their broth.
