We visited with a large party of 6 persons, which I wouldn't recommend. It's a small location, and we took up appx 40% of the restaurant. This is a no fuss, no frills, hole in the wall, authentic Korean family owned spot. I wouldn't recommend if you are vegetarian/dietary restrictions - look at their menu ahead of time, pork and beef heavy! Our party enjoyed the blood sausage, everyone enjoyed their stews. I ordered the chicken spicy soup, and I tried a bit of the beef stew that was in the clear broth. I definitely preferred the spicy soup as it was much heaver in flavor. I like my pork soup. Even though the broth is more on the bland side, eating meat, rice, broth with kimchi is good. Kimchi is more on the sour side. Don't expect atmosphere or best service - come for affordable, hearty, authentic home-style Korean soups! They have very limited menu - most are soups as the name suggests (Gukbap literally means soup-rice, as in, Koreans dunk rice into the soup and eat as a one-pot meal), with a few shareable dishes. Kimchi dwaeji(pork) stew (2/5, Main) I ordered this classic to see how good they are even though I can cook a mean one at home... and I was pretty disappointed. While it was seasoned, it clearly lacked that main layer of flavor. It's the Korean black magik taste of pungent garlic spicy, sweet, umami & savory flavor that's birthed when kimchi and pork goes to honeymoon on a hot sizzling pan. As a result, it just had high-note seasoning and elsewhere was just empty in the flavor spectrum. Even the quantity of pork was sadly outnumbered by overwhelming amount of ... kimchi. You're supposed to hit about a 60-40 ratio between cabbage and pork.. or at least 70-30. This was more like 95-5. Yangji sullungtang (Beef brisket ox bone soup) (5/5, Main) Wife ordered this and initially it's really bland. But that's because you're supposed to adjust the seasoning with the provided salt & pepper. She had to put copious shakes of salt to make it decent, but once there, the soup had great depth and hearty flavor - none of that fake powdery taste. Also, they're very generous with slices of beef brisket which was tasty. Definitely can be a one-pot meal for most ppl. Eat it with the kimchi and ggakdugi (radish kimchi)) provided for you. Wife took pity on me and donated slabs of brisket to bring up protein level of my meal. Definitely better value than the sullungtang from the other fancier joint down the Main St. whose name should remain mystery... Overall, I can see why this place would be popping for lunch takeout... and I may have just hit the wrong timing when the soup stock wasn't developed. I'll definitely come for sullungtang as that seems more ready around the clock with time for broth to really develop. Just thinking about this place makes my mouth salivate. I am extremely picky when it comes to Soondae and Soondae Guk. I was driving back from my trip upstate and was going to make a pitstop at the supermarket and saw this restaurant on the search result. There was parking right in the front but beware, DO NOT USE THE PARKING METER. It literally ate all my quarters and my sister had to end up downloading the app to pay for parking. The restaurant is super small with only a few tables for the customers. Luckily, there was only us and another party of two. The restaurant doesn't have an extensive menu, which is a good thing. I ordered the Soondae Guk and they gave a massive amount of chives on the side to add into your soup. After not having Korean food for a few days, the soup rejuvenated my body soul, and I never felt more alive. They provided radish kimchi and regular kimchi as the side dishes and honestly, you won't need anything else. I ordered an extra soup to go but was a bit sad when they didn't give as much chives as they did during dine-in. I'd hid in my basement and slowly suck on the bones and dunk spoonful of rice to the spicy broth. While making a drive from Florida back home to RI our momentum was slowed by a flat tire. Worst case scenario, right? Wrong. That flat tire brought us across the street from Busan Gukbap, proving that all things may, in fact, happen for a reason. We walked in around 1:00pm and we're immediately seated at a small table with a box for chopsticks and spoons. It's a small place, seating probably 16-18 people tops, with a small prep area visible and, assumedly, a kitchen in the back. We were brought over some Kimchi and kkakdugi to snack on, and the waitress took our order as soon as we were ready. For myself, I ordered the Dakdori Tang (spicy chicken and potato stew) and my fiancé ordered the Sagol Haejangguk (pork hangover noodle soup). These both came out within 10 minutes, mine *literally* bubbling boiling hot with a nice side of white rice. The food was fantastic. I can't speak much for the Sagol, but my own was fantastic. Warm, spicy (both seasoned and hot), and just plain enjoyable to eat. This dish easily skyrocketed to one of my favorites thanks to this restaurant. The service was friendly and very welcoming despite a slight language barrier. I wrapped up the remainder of my stew, and we took some kimchi to go as well. Before letting us leave, our waitress reached into our bag and took the kimchi container back, bringing it to the prep station to make sure it was full to the brim for us, an incredibly kind gesture. It would be quite a hike to come back here regularly, but I'll definitely be making a point to return whenever I wind up in the area again! read more
