A friend recommended Gallo Blanco when she learned we were visiting Phoenix and assured me it should be a priority. She ate here twice during a four-day conference several years ago and still regrets not coming back at least a third time. We came in around dinner time on a weeknight and were seated right away. I love the ambiance - colorful walls and art, lots of interesting things to look at. Upscale casual. I started with a margarita and knew right away we were in for a tasty evening. The drink was well made with fresh lime juice and good tequila. For dinner, I ordered a barbacoa taco and a carne asada burrito. After eating the taco, I regretted not eating only the barbacoa in everything all night. It was smoky and tender and had the right amount of sauce on it. The burrito was also good but it couldn't compare to the taco. We had a little time to squander at the end of dinner, so despite being stuffed, we ordered churros and coffee. The churros came with three dipping sauces -- chocolate, caramel and what appeared to be a sweetened condensed milk. The churros were crisp and fresh; we mostly ignored the dipping sauces. Service was excellent. Our server was friendly and warm with a good sense of humor. I don't know when we'll we back, but we've recommended this to our family who lives in Phoenix for their next date night. read more

Just move to the neighborhood and so excited to find this great Gem. Such a fun and cool place, with a nice patio and misters. Our server Holly was super nice and had great recommendations. We had the chilaquiles with barbacoa and it was delicious, also had the flatjacks Cajete and they were amazing. Love that everything is from scratch and fresh. It's such a bummer to write this review but we just had a frustrating experience on 3/30. My husband and I have been coming here for years and it's usually our go to spot before a baseball game. We made sure to get there early before the game, it was pretty dead at the time but the hostess made it seem like we were an inconvenience for making her work. Barely greeted us and seemed very upset. It took approximately 15 minutes before we were greeted by the server as the hostess just stared at our table. We were so frustrated over the lack of service we considered getting up and leaving but given we had a hungry 10 month old with us we didn't want to do that. read more

This was my debut visit at the restaurant and the waiter provided us with excellent tips. 1.6.24: I haven't been to Gallo in a few YEARS & was excited to be back. Their menu is so varied/rich & food has always been consistently delish. It was a Saturday night & they were busy. Our waitress was seriously lacking - we had questions and she flat out did not have answers! When I asked what the "fish of the day" was, she replied "Yes." Then I pressed on, "No, I mean what KIND of fish are you serving tonight? Like b/c every night there's a different one?" She just looked blank. I said, "Is it halibut?" I don't know why b/c that's what I was hoping?! She said "Yes." So I said "OK I'll have that. Does it come with vegetables or rice or ?" She said "Sure." My family members ordered their regular dishes - they've been there more recently & knew what they wanted: Huevos Rancheros and Cortado Dos Salad (both vegetarian). Two minutes later, our server came back: "We don't have halibut tonight. It's another one." Waited a beat. No more information. "What is it then?" I asked. "It's a white fish," she said. "Like tilapia or ?" I pressed on. "No I think it's called rockfish," she said. "OK great I guess I'll get that," I answered. The whole scene was actually comical, like we were being pranked or something. Here's the thing: waiting tables is hard af! I've done it. If I didn't know something, I just admitted it & then went & asked another server or my manager. I would even introduce myself to my tables: "Good evening. I'm totally new here & will do my best. What can I get you?" Prepare people for the fact that you are learning. As soon as people hear that, they tend to be super kind b/c everyone's been new at a job before. Finally, I was a horrible server! b/c it was too much to keep track of. I moved over to banquets where everyone eats the same thing for the most part, so no keeping track of a variety of food and beverage orders. I loved it b/c I didn't have to choreograph orders, it was labor intensive and I got to eat like a queen, Anyway! My fish came with a side of something that was swimming in a very dark sauce, like mole. The side turned out to be mostly yucca & potatoes, so starchy. I really wanted a healthy serving of green vegetables and ended up ordering another salad. Our server could have suggested that I order a side of steamed vegetables or a side salad, if she had been given training So yeah while the food was good, the service was seriously lacking. Please have your servers shadow someone else and ask questions of their peers when they don't know what's being served. There's no reason to put people out on the floor if they're not ready. Came here for dinner with a friend who raved about Gallo Blanco and comes here frequently. It was a slow weekday evening so we were able to be seated quickly for 2 people. Our waitress was friendly but very slow with service. Our drinks took a long time to come out and even though she passed our table a few times, she never stopped by and said they were coming or that she would check on them. Those are small things but basic customer service. I had a mango margarita and it was good but nothing to write home about. My friend had a spicy marg (picosso) that she usually gets but felt they added an abundance if peppers, way more than typical. My steak tacos were good and the fish taco was delicious. I tried my friends ceviche and it was fresh and yummy, but was missing tomatoes and she had to ask them to bring some on the side. The final straw for me was seeing a little mouse run around the eating area twice. Our waitress stood nearby folding napkins when my table and another started discussing this mouse, but she pretended not to notice and never addressed it. We took the family here on a Saturday afternoon, between lunch and dinner. The restaurant had some people in it but plenty of seating open inside and outside. We were seated quickly. Before I get any further, I was hesitant at first to come here as I was unsure of it being kid friendly. YES! It is kid friendly. They have a kids menu and crayons at the table. After being seated, it took a moment for our server to come by and take our order. This was surprising as the dining room wasn't particularly busy. Once we ordered what we wanted the food did come quite quickly. Our server brought chips and salsa out prior to our entree's and the salsa was great! One was on the spicier side, but luckily our family likes hot stuff. The flavor was magnificent and not just spice-heavy. I ordered the Chilaquiles and they where the best restaurant chilaquiles I have ever had. Now if you know you know why I had to specify restaurant chilaquiles. Thats because traditionally they are better at home. The kids ordered a flapjack, and not to anyone surprise did not finish because it was too big for them. Needless to say, I had to finish it like the dad I am. It was fluffy and the batter was a little sweet! So I may be tempted to order one for myself next time. We all enjoyed the food. I am only in town for the week and I've already eaten here twice this week. They make tortillas in house and they're nothing short of wonderful! The salsas are flavorful also. The flapjacks carjetas taste like dulce de leche and I love the frijoles and guac. Please support this business so they're still operating para mi regresó. Fresh squeezed piña and orange juices round out the menu so perfectly. The outdoor patio area is also pretty awesome, they have outdoor seating in front and behind the restaurant. It was Mother's Day. So we had an hour wait. However, they did take us in before the hour was up. They had several tables open, so it must be fewer wait staff. The food was delicious but expensive. I chose the chicken tamale with green chile. I wish I had selected the red sauce which is more traditional. My husband had a pork burrito. Unfortunately, it wasn't smothered in red chile sauce. My son chose chorizo with biscuits and gravy, but there wasn't a whole lot of chorizo. Everyone was having a good time, it is loud, but you're able to speak to others in your party. When I tell you that this was the lamest salad I have ever gotten, and for $18? What a slap in the face to open the box and see the Arrachera salad. For that price, I expect to be full, at the very least, and I was not at the end of eating this. I also expect to be thoroughly enjoying what I'm eating, and this was pure salt and no taste. It was like a salad from a fast food joint. This, from such a popular Mexican spot? I also got the elote, and it's cool that it comes with two corn on the cobs, but it was legit the laziest elote. It's just covered with cotija cheese and paprika, which is something that anyone can do. It didn't even have lime juice or cilantro, which are necessary for proper elote! This did not taste like elote! It was just corn with cotija! Lazy! To top it all off, my takeout was ready and the waitresses, who were just standing at the counter talking to each other, didn't even inform me for who-knows-how-long while I was just sitting there and starving, and it was taking so long that I had to go ask about it, and they just happened to remember that my bag was there behind them. Well, this was unexpected. What a great find. Everything was delicious. The asada tacos were well seasoned. The pastor was not goopy and had great flavor. The pork belly had a nice crisp and the pickled onions on top balanced the sweetness. Both salsas were great but I preferred the green, sweet cilantro flavor and decent heat. Thanks to Chef/Owner Doug Robson and his formidable talents giving us the opportunity to enjoy his creations in Downtown Phoenix. This somewhat non-descript, yet at once charming setting for casual, tasty and unique Robson delicacies is comforting and relaxing as well as not with an 'in your face' atmospheric interference that distracts from your eats 'cause once delighting in Blanco's offerings, you by all means do not want outside meddling - you'll want to focus on the art, the culinary art. As you watch servers pass you by, it kind of creates a taste bud consternation as to what you are going to finally order when the moment arrives. Doug, why do you make it so tuff? Our last visit to the White Rooster recently was driven by our desire to try it for breakfast or brunch. We were not unhappy - actually we were ecstatic with the results! Our brunch would obviously start with a couple of La Flaca Margaritas, scrumptious and a perfect simple Mimosa. How can you not go without guacamole with breakfast, no such thing... very well-prepared house guac - excellent! My wife, being a life-long biscuits and gravy fan, opted for the Biscuits and Chorizo Gravy. The schreiner's chorizo gravy was perfectly blended with oozing deliciousness, and the home-made biscuits along with perfectly cooked eggs were simply incredible. I went for some traditional fare, with a superb plateful of Huevos Rancheros with quesadillas, corn tortillas, an asadero cheese (which was fab), perfectly cooked eggs and I chose the ranchero salsa, zowie! Now honestly, no matter what you want to call his style of cooking. Whether Southwestern, Mexican, Oaxacan or whatever, this stuff is good, no great! How can anyone take something so relatively simple, yet make it into a culinary and palate enthralling work of art? I don't know, but Gallo Blanco does it. I've been coming to Gallo Blanco for a while and always had great experiences, but yesterday was really disappointing. We sat on the patio and there was a major fly problem - like seriously bad. The waiter tried to help by offering a fly fan and we asked to move inside, but another waitress said all indoor tables were reserved. We had to just wait for the fly fans, which helped a little but not much. The food wasn't up to their usual standards either. Our chip appetizer was basically 90% broken pieces and crumbs. The tacos still tasted good but you could tell they were rushed - one of my shrimp tacos had only 2 shrimp and a huge glob of mayo dumped on it. Really bummed because I've always liked this place. Hope they fix the fly situation on the patio and get back to their normal food quality. Not sure if I caught them on a bad day, but it definitely wasn't the Gallo Blanco I'm used to. read more

Gallo Blanco is one of my fave local Phoenix stops! In short: Good prices, bomb guac, hue is rancheros divorciados, delightful staff, cool atmosphere. After a photo shoot with the one and only Jim Hesterman at BlokStudio, my fam was famished. All 8 adults and 2 kids waltzed into Gallo Blanco around noon and the place was jammin! People all over. We asked the servers for a seat and that we could be seperated if necessary. They did their magic and got us a spot together. I ordered the huevos rancheros divorciados style (red salsa on one side, green salsa on the other) and the side of elote. My fam ordered the world famous guac and the tower looking bread with the mustard sauce and various delicious plates. The food came out quick even with the special requests. The elote was WOW!! And the huevos rancheros was tangy and spicy and the tostada was perfect. The beans were perfect. I ate the entire plate in about 10 minutes. My mom and dad and 94 year old Filipina Lola and my wife's Mexican parents and the kids all loved it. All cultures abs ages loved it. I've been here before and I'll be here again. read more

Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 8:30 am. 11/8. Seated right away. Then we waited around 10 min for the waitress to come by with some water. Lots of workers walked right past us and never looked around to see what was going on. Not a good first impression. And the place wasn't even that busy. Asked for a coffee. By the time she finally brought it to the table the coffee was lukewarm and tasted like it was from the bottom of the pot. When the food runner brought out our meals I asked for a fresh cup. But the food runner never told our waitress so I had to ask again! Also had to ask for our water to be refilled. While the food arrived quickly and was delicious, it was a disappointing experience. Chicharron De Queso: Have you ever had one of those keto-style cheese crisps? It's like a ginormous cheese crisp but better. It had a nice chew and thickness so it was just some friend piece of cheese. The aioli paired really well with it. The highlight of my meal! Carne Asada Burrito: I heard that burritos in Phoenix were the size of your forearm and after measuring it against my own arm- they were right! The beef was on-point so were the beans as well. I will say it could have benefited from some guacamole or sour cream. Definitely need a knife and fork for this one. Side of Beans: Pinto (which I prefer vs. Black) however I love a good side of refried beans and these were not exactly that. This place is consistently top notch! I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in the area - especially if I have stayed downtown for a concert or game the night before because their posole is the best hangover cure. Everything I've had has been awesome! My favs are the carne asada burrito (Sounds basic but try it! Trust me!), the fried chicken torta and the chorizo bean and cheese dip. Oh! And the el dorado cocktail is so good it tastes like those mango suckers covered in chili! The staff is also super great here! Big shout out to Gina who was our server last night. She was great! This location is tucked into a walking residential neighborhood and has a spacious interior for a dining room experience or a bar/lounge experience. There are also two out door patios to choose from. The menu has options for meats or veggies eaters. This a Mexican restaurant, but you can order pancakes here as well (a fave). The traditional margaritas are tart if you don't love the usual mix. The chips that arrive to your table include 3 different salsa with varying levels of heat. The service has always been spot on. read more
