I wish I had read the other reviews before coming here. My daughter cracked my iPhone 15 screen, and in a rush, I mistakenly took it to Gadgetworks instead of an authorized Apple store. They replaced the screen for over $200, and from the start, the phone felt slower than usual, but I figured that's what I get for not going to Apple. Less than 24 hours later, I set my phone down gently, no more than half a foot, on my desk, and the screen completely shattered and went black. I immediately drove back, expecting they would stand by their work. Instead, I was met with hostility. I was called a liar and a scammer simply for asking them to replace a screen that had clearly been installed improperly or was defective. They refused to take any responsibility or offer a replacement. After reading similar experiences on Yelp, I regret ever stepping foot in this store. The workmanship was poor, the screen quality was terrible, and the customer service was the worst I've experienced. Now I'm out over $200 and left with a useless phone. Save yourself the headache, take your business to an actual Apple store where you'll at least get quality parts and customer service. I will never return to Gadgetworks. read more

Wasn't friendly or helpful. Offered me cheaper glass or more expensive option to fix my phone, implying that the cheaper one will lag and work badly. So of course I paid for the more expensive one. My screen didn't work right afterwards. It kept double typing letters. I actually broke my phone again shortly afterward so had to go back and pay for another repair (not his fault), and then it worked properly the second time. 2 months later it does a weird screen flashing thing every time I first look at my phone. It's ok. But I don't think it was worth the $50 bucks I may have saved over getting it fixed at apple. And the battery I had them put in does not work like the new one originally did I wish I had just replace the phone. While I could upgrade to a fancier device for the a fee similar to what was paid, I like the simplicity and size of my device. It was repaired to my satisfaction as promised in less than 3 days! Location is close to home with parking on the street - no appointment needed - walk in. They said they could honor the Yelp $15 for $30 (otherwise Yelp check in can get you 10% off) just by mentioning it rather than purchasing it through Yelp (and the shop losing fees to Yelp). $27 including tax for new battery in iPhone within 45 minutes (ran errands and came back), hard to beat anywhere. read more

TLDR: take as many pictures/videos before repair and after as you can, because you might have to bring this guy to small claims court after he "repairs" your device. I brought my laptop in after being recommended to this place. The plastic housing that held the hinge on the left-hand side of my laptop had broken, and the screen had started to separate from the back of the laptop. I brought it in, and although that part had been fixed, my laptop was given to me with the right-hand side hinge broken now, and my laptop didn't go to sleep when the lid was closed, and it would also type/close tabs/delete things etc. when the lid was closed. I took videos of the laptop with everything happening and luckily took a lot of pictures of the original broken hinge. I brought it back in and the guy was treating me like I was stupid and didn't know my own laptop, but he said he would "check it out." later that day, he called and said the hinge was bent. I told him to repair it, because he broke it. I also told him I don't expect to have to pay for it. He swore up and down that he didn't break it, but who else would have? Finally, after about 5 days, he repaired the bent hinge. However, my laptop still didn't go to sleep when the lid is closed and still types/closes tabs, etc. I found out through another person who deals with computers that there is a physical sensor that tells the computer when the lid is closed, and after trying every single software solution we could find, we determined that he had also broken the sensor. Paid $300 just for my laptop to be broken again, by the hands of the guy at the Evanston GadgetWorks, and will probably have to pay even more money to fix his mistakes. Don't recommend, and will not recommend to any of my Northwestern friends. read more

Prashant fixed it, staying after hours and replacing a part with one from his own phone so I wouldn't have to order it and wait. He also thoroughly explained the possible worst-case scenarios of what I might have done to the phone before taking it apart, in case the repair proved to be expensive or impossible. My phone screen cracked on a rare moment I didn't have an Otterbox phone case on it. Desperate to have it fixed quickly, I found myself at Gadgetworks. I wish I hadn't come to this non-authorized Apple retailer to get my iPhone X phone screen fixed. Within 2 weeks of it being fixed and having an Otterbox case on my phone, the screen was minorly cracked (unclear how this happened as I didn't drop it) AND the upper right hand corner of the phone stopped working entirely, rending my phone effectively useless. Despite having had no problems with a case on my phone for 5 years prior, i had never had anything like this happen. I paid $160 for my phone to be fixed by Gadgetworks, and they refused any wrongdoing when I brought my phone back in. The only solution they offered to this faulty installation / screen quality was to pay an additional $100 to have a new part reinstalled, and they were entirely unforgiving about the situation. Had Gadgetworks had any sort of customer service, they would've recognized that the screen and the installation itself was to blame for this problem and replaced it without a fee. I won't be coming back here and I'll be encouraging all of my Northwestern classmates to take their business to an actual Apple store for fixes in the future to avoid the shoddy workmanship and lack of customer service offered by Gadgetworks. read more

I needed my battery replaced on my iPhone. He normally needs appointments for various things, but he told me just to come in and give him about a half hour to replace it. True to his word, he did it right on time, he was masked the entire time, and he wiped off/di sanitized the phone before giving it back to me. Since I am high-risk, I appreciate the extra effort, and it cost less than the other battery replacement I had. I would definitely recommend this place to other people, at least for battery replacement! read more

My son is a NU student. His laptop didn't charge battery so he brought it to this place for repair. They said a fuse on the power board inside the laptop was blown up and wanted to charge $200 to put a new fuse in. I happened to have a degree in Electric Engineering and I was very skeptical about the fuse story. I told my son that when fuse was blown up some other sensitive electronics may be damaged as well. So we decided not to repair but paid the $25 diagnosis fee. When he came home for holiday, I opened up of the laptop and found no fuse at all. But the wires between power-in jacket and motherboard was deliberately cut by their repairman, you can tell from shining cut edge, and scratches on the aluminum base board. This place is not even ethical. Update: I am able to buy a replacement part on eBay for $9. I put it in and the laptop starts charging again. No blown up fuse, nothing. For years I used Chicago Gadgets on Kedzie and Lawrence in the city. They were uniformly excellent. this place is not. I paid them to do a new screen, battery, camera lens and screen protector on my iPhone. I paid for the expensive screen. When i put my phone cover back on, the new Lens shattered. They begrudgingly replaced it. The next day my phone dropped from one foot onto the soft corner of my case and the screen shattered. It turned out they hadn't installed the screen protector I paid for. I didn't want to deal with the owner's skeptical comments again, life is too short. They use really cheap parts - avoid at all costs. We needed to replace our sons Ipad screen after it cracked . We paid $120 to replace it and it cracked within 1 day . We took the ipad back and they reluctantly replaced the screen again but this time at cost , $60 . This screen cracked again two days later and this is with a screen protector on and in a rugged protection case !! read more

What a lifesaver! My daughter cracked the screen on her Kindle (2nd generation) and it was past the one year warranty. When I called Amazon, they told me that they don't fix Kindles - I can send it for $20 off of a refurbished one which basically would cost me $100 to get a Kindle. When I went into Gadgetworks, they quoted me at the cost of the screen (which they would need to order) and the cost of hours worked on it. It was cheaper for me to order a Kindle screen online through a third vendor ($15) and then, brought it in for them to fix which only took them an hour which cost me $25 for labor. I found this repair shop on yelp, read the reviews, went to the shop's site, and requested an estimate for glass repair of my phone screen. The shop got back to me within 12 hours with a reasonable price based on comparison shopping. I brought the phone in on a Monday, late in the afternoon, and the manager told me that I just happen to come in before he places orders with his supplier, so my phone would be ready the next afternoon. I left the phone, and he called me the next afternoon to let me know my phone was ready. I was charged exactly the price I was quoted and the repair was perfect. Otherwise, the man who took care of me was courteous and helpful from start to finish. Bonus if you bring him a HIPAA required BAA, he'll sign it without issue. Just be sure to bring the agreement with you. I will definitely use this shop in the future. read more

Okay to all you poor folks giving this place 5 stars - hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I suspect you have all been ripped off. I recently came to this establishment to ask the staff to run a diagnostic on my macbook pro which was failing to boot up correctly (the questionmark folder situation) and that procedure alone cost me about $25. This was acceptable. However the folks here quickly informed me that I had a defective hard drive and would need to get it replaced for about $250. That struck me as a bit odd, so before giving them the okay-go I consulted one of my friends who works at an IT clinic at Northwestern. Turns out, the only thing wrong with my laptop was the cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard and the whole thing was replaced and repaired for less than $45. The funny thing is that the staff actually told me that if the problem was with the cable, the operation would be $50 for the parts and the labor. So either they misdiagnosed the laptop in which case they are merely incompetent, or they intentionally gave a customer false information in the hopes of a heftier sum. Please do your research before coming to this place. Do not simply let them do whatever they want since it is probably likely that they are either making some mistakes or intentionally trying to cheat you. But I'll be generous and assume the former in which case....avoid it anyway!!! read more

After doing some research, I ended up bringing my Iphone 5S here to fix a cracked screen. My phone was at the point where it no longer responded to any touch on the screen. I wanted to get my laptop fixed because it had some OS issues. I dropped it off at Gadgetworks on a Sunday and the guy at the counter said the computer technicians work only from Monday to Friday. I asked that guy about a $15 for $30 coupon and he said yes bring it tomorrow e ll knock $30 from the bill. The next day, Monday, I got a call from the manager/technician who said the laptop was fixed and he said the total was going to be $75. So I went there and showed another guy at the counter my voucher and he called the manager and gave the phone to me. Now he said he already gave me a discount and that's why $75. But I told him I already bought the voucher for $15. He said he will knock off $15 from the bill. But they ended up charging me $85 saying there was additional $25 charge for diagnosis. If that's the case why would he tell me that the "total" was $75??? I ended up paying $10 extra from what he said And my voucher for $15 is wasted too!!!!! I brought in my Playstation 3 because of a YLOD (yellow light of death) error a few days ago and these guys did a fantastic job. The quoted price was exactly what I paid, which is about half of what Sony would have charged me (when you include shipping). I got my console back sooner than anticipated, and of course _weeks_ sooner than if I had sent the thing to Sony. They also revved up the cooling fan to reduce the risk of this happening again, which was a very pleasant surprise. I doubt Sony would have done that. Slow turn around to get my iPad fixed and when I went to checkout they wouldn't honor the two groupons I purchased. Groupon said you could purchase two per customer, which to me sounded like you can use two per customer. When I asked them where it said I couldn't use two it literally took them ten minutes between the two of them to find it buried in the fine print. If they don't want you to use two it needs to say that. Now I have a useless second one since I won't be going back to this place. Terrible customer service! I would not recommend this place. I dropped off my XBOX that wouldn't power on. They stated they would check the power supply, the thermal cooling system and there would be a 25.00 fee to look at it. They called me and said it was the motherboard and would cost more to fix than buying a new system. When I went to pick it up the game was still inside leading me to believe they had not even opened it up. I refused to pay the fee and they did not dispute it. I had a cracked iPhone screen and saw Gadgetworks charged $50 less than Apple to fix my screen. I was excited, but after having it repaired I noticed the dimensions of the glass was off. The edges of the glass didn't fit quite right, the edges of the screen were not as sensitive, and the screen protectors I ordered online for my phone wouldn't fit on the new glass. Unsurprisingly, a few weeks after I got my screen replaced I dropped my phone and the screen immediately shattered. Even though I bought Gadgetwork's "upgraded" glass to fix my screen, it is of lower quality and easily shatters. Save the time and money and just get your screen replaced at Apple. It's $50 more expensive, but worth it in the end. I'm out $100. read more

I had a broken iphone 8 screen that they fixed promptly. Unfortunately the screen went out a month later and they fixed it again for free, and then that next screen got a hairline fracture within a few days. Gadgetworks figured out the phone wasn't laying flat and this was causing the issues. They straightened the phone and again replaced the screen at no charge. Standing behind their products and their work makes me a repeat customer for sure. Nice to feel you can really trust these guys. The LCD screen on my Galaxy S4 broke and after having a couple bad experiences at uBreakiFix, I decided to come here instead. The price here at Gadgetworks was less than what uBreakiFix quoted me, and they fixed my phone so quickly, in under 30 minutes. I went to pick it up a few minutes after their listed closing time, and they still let me in to check out without any mention of the time. Super nice people.
