TechCity (Park Ridge) - Disappointing experience. I brought my son's Lenovo ThinkPad in for a hinge repair estimate and clearly explained at drop-off that it was urgent since he was returning to college on January 19 and needed it back ASAP. Despite that, I didn't hear anything for nearly two weeks. When they finally contacted me, communication was very disorganized. Different techs called at different times, but none seemed aware of previous conversations, and I had to keep repeating the situation. At one point, I was told they didn't realize I needed it back quickly -- even though I explicitly stated that when I dropped it off. The delay and lack of coordination made an already stressful situation worse. I was expecting professional, timely service, especially after clearly communicating the urgency, but unfortunately that wasn't my experience. I did ask to speak to the owner and was told "he isn't available." If you need fast, organized turnaround, you may want to look elsewhere. read more

I opened my laptop and a blue screen appeared. I logged into my Microsoft account and followed the directions too trouble shoot on my own but I kept going back to the blue screen. So I took my laptop here to get it reinstalled. Luckily, all my important documents and stuff are on the cloud so I didn't have to worry about losing any data. I just wanted to be able to use my laptop when needed. Took it there on a Monday and it was ready by the next day. I received an invoice but no explanation as to why it happened and what I should do if it happens again. Oh well. I'll just cross my fingers and hope it'll be fine for a few years. read more

I had a hard drive that had worked fully functional. It was just slow because it had so much photos and videos in it. To retrieve the data and transfer it to newer hard drive, I went in to this store that was nearest from our house, to use local business. The owner, Chady, is friendly and a charming guy. But he took the case of my hard drive that had decryption key on and discarded it. He kept the hard drive for a while, kept on asking me if I put password on it. I said no, and told him "I plug it in, and it works. " He said we could send it to this big company in wisconsin to do data recovery. They, too, told me that they needed the decryption key. The harddrive was returned and I paid Chady $65 for all this ordeal. In this process, he also discarded my 2 USBs that goes into this hard drive. One for the outlet to the hard drive, and one from hard drive to the computer. I never gave consents to throw anything away. I kept on calling the store and leaving messages about where what belonged to me were. I actually showed up to the store many times as well. He told me that he had them somewhere in the store along with other usbs, so he would look for them and would give me a call. His employee once gave me some USB that does not even fit to my hard drive. I sent the same hard drive to Ontrack, another big company who handles data recovery. They said the same thing, that I needed decryption key. They said they were 99% done, they just needed the external case for the hard drive, the very thing the owner of this business told me that I would not need, he permanently discarded it. My hard drive had everything- my growing up, wedding, my memories with my parents, my babies' videos and photos.. This business's owner's lack of knowledge on the subject is incomprehensible. And should be reinstated. If you are looking to do data recovery, and if you are serious about it like I was, please, reach out to a big company. They do not cost you more than local stores. They also will not throw away very important things to solve the matter. At the end, he told me that "I feel so bad what happened to you." He ****ed me up royally. I had a really positive experience here. I dropped my laptop late in the day as it simply wouldn't fire up and I can't be without it for long. The owner explained the possibilities and said he'd take a look at it and be in touch. Around 6:30pm I received a call saying that he was able to replace the charging port (and had the part on file) and I could pick it back up by 7pm or at 9am the next morning. Horrible place to go. I brought my cell phone in to get a screen replacement. The next day my camera didn't work it was very blurry due to not cleaning the lens that they smeared. They agreed to clean it but replaced my battery with a bad one. I brought it to another place & they told me the battery was replaced. Tech City is located in a pretty unassuming storefront next to Dairy Queen on the south side of Park Ridge. They do all sorts of IT work and offer some refurbished products for sale. I recently had some major issues with a Mac Book Pro that weren't solved during a visit to the Apple store. I decided to buy my own external hard drive and have Tech City recover the data for me. I was quoted a fair price ($129) and a few days for the process. I received a call 2 days later to see if I wanted them to fix the laptop itself. I figured it was toast, but they got it up and running with the new iOS for another $100. The computer is running like it is brand new and he even put all of the apps / software back on it after resetting to factory settings. I don't get the bad reviews of this place. I've already used them twice, and they've been great! 1) I needed to replace my computer that was dedicated to an old printer that I use. I was looking for an older computer that still had a Serial and a Parallel connector on it. I left a message and they called me back in a couple hours with one available. Exactly what I needed. 2) I had a clover register that wasn't working, I decided to bring it in. He was able to fix it within a day. They told me the part that I needed and even offered for me not buy the piece from him and buy it directly from company. I gladly paid him for the extra piece. These guys are the best! Why would I spend $1000 on a new pc that will be outdated next year? Instead I go here every few years and spend a small fraction of that on a refurbished tower. I have been doing this for 10 years and have never had a problem. Everything is fresh and tweaked for max. performance. I've had my current tower almost 3 years and I thought it may be time to upgrade due to this new design / mfg. software I am using. Instead of pushing me to buy a new pc, they suggested a new and inexpensive graphics card and my pc is more than up to the task as they said it would be. Refurbished items are so expensive. You can get a new laptop at Wal-Mart for the same price with everything in it. Took me laptop in to get worked on and they promised it to me in 24 hours. The excel kept freezing up. Two days later still nothing and they said I had 138 viruses on it. I couldn't believe it.. Then he said, well ,not viruses, but malware and spyware and stuff.. Paid $45 for no service and my laptop is now in worse condition than when I took it there. read more

I highly DO NOT recommend this place. I went to get my hard drive cloned and swapped. Their tech guy was completely rude on a Saturday morning when I called, and even hung up the phone on me, twice because he didn't want to hear my explanation. I'm still waiting for a call from them to return my old hard drive. It's been 4-5 months now. I'm sure I'll never receive that phone call...... But they will never get my business again..... Explained what I use a computer for - basically email and going to websites. I don't use any special software. The salesperson explained what kind of laptop I would need. Not recommended. This wasn't the first time we were here. In the past they seemed to be trustworthy but recently we've become unsure. This last visit is definitely our last visit. We brought my laptop in to be checked due to some recent slowness on a few sites. They let us know that the hard drive was going bad and would need to be replaced, new operating system, transfer of information, plus other incidentals added up to over $300.00 in repair on a computer I paid $400 for just under 2 years ago. They were surprised when we declined the service and opted to pick up the computer and paid $45 for diagnosis. Got it home, started it up and behold - a black screen. Called Tech City because it was working when we dropped it off, just a little slow. The (condescending) associate was quick to say that the hard drive went bad but we could call back when the owner was in. I don't like to impose on people at work but had a bad feeling about this so I asked one of our IT techs if he would mind taking a quick look at it. I'm posting this review using my "went bad" hard drive laptop. Turns out - it took my IT professionals a little searching to find the misdirected connections but they were able to do so and everything is back to the way it was before we went to Tech City. Horrible customer service. Dropped off a flash drive to be repaired and get the info onto another disc or drive,. Girl who was doing her nails behind the desk said it would be done in 3 days. Great I thought. Well after 7 days, I tried to give them the benefit of doubt, I stopped in, don't live too far. The tech person said that he forgot about this drive and would get right to it in a few days. OK, people forget, again I give them the benefit of doubt, (Mistake #2). I call about 4 days later, making sure to give them enough time. The nail girl answers tells me it was going to be approx. "$500 or something". I thought "or something", WTF? So, I go in and try to retreive my flash drive to go else where. The tech then tells me give me a few more days, and tells me he will hook up some wires to the ends and I'll have the infomation from this flash and put it on another for you. He sounds very confident. I let him do it, (Mistake #3). Again I don't hear from them for 7 days. I call and the tech, now he says that there is no way he can get the info from my flash drive onto another drive. I tell them I will be in tomorrow to pick up my flash drive. I drive there the next day to get my flash drive and guess what. They don't have it. The tech decided to take it with him to where ever the heck he was going. Finally, after about a good three weeks, I have my flash back and it is taped up and looks like it has been through hell. This place is a toilet. Never again in my life. Update 21 Sep 11: This idiot who looked at my flashdrive, ruined it and now no info will be able to be restored. He melted the chip when he decided to weld/soder the prongs. Useless. I had a technician in the neighborhood who resolved none of the issues, so I took it to Tech City. Turns out it was a hardware problem (faulty touch screen). Shadi quickly and courteously assessed the situation and even saved me money by installing an after market part. I am confused seeing bad reviews, as the owner's honed skills and polite ways are some of my best pal's topics, if anything about a computer comes up...and my pal @ 70, complains all the time about everything. I now see why he 'brags on' him. I drop my computer, it splits exposing the hinge, damaging the charging port and all my twisting of the cord, to make a connection (so I do not have to replace it), ruins it more. I can not afford a new one at that second, but need it badly. I go into the local Best Buy as I have that GEEK SQUAD service, but all of them start immediately whinning.... "we really do not do any work there,.... send it here, they will call you,... I do not know how much it will cost,.....maybe fix it 15 working days possibly", along with award winning, well practiced expressions of apathy and feigned concern. My pal takes the same computer to Tech City, the owner looks at it (again, the case was cracked), quotes their minimum including part and fixes it in two days and delivers it below quote, smiles and is professionally kind through out the whole process. They purposely sold an incompatible piece of hardware to my brother (when he was quite clear with his specs), then didn't allow any returns. Do not recommend this place. I brought in a old IPad that had been dropped and didn't turn on anymore. I gave it to the lady at the front desk and told her that it didn't turn on, and that I wanted it fixed. They ended up "fixing " it for $20 rather quickly, which was good. When I went to the place to pick it up, I tried turning it on and I noticed that the icons on the screen had a weird pink tinge to them. I pointed this out to the front desk lady, and she said "Oh, you didnt tell us that--you just said you wanted to be able to turn it on!" Umm...yah... kinda thought it was implied that I wanted it fixed...into working order...with no weird pink color to the screen. On top of that, the lady tried to make me feel like it was my fault that I didn't tell her that it had been dropped. Huh??? Isn't it pretty common for IPads and IPhones to be dropped?? So, if you go to this place (which I will never do again), make sure you tell them specifically want you want fixed on your device.
