Wow... you Cal kids are so spoiled these days. My dessert tummy would've been so much happier if this place existed when I was still a student. I'd say I have a pretty high bar for egg puffs (egg waffles). Every time I go back to HK, my first course of business is going to get egg puffs and egg tarts. With that said, I've tried some of the best egg puffs that HK has to offer. I ordered the Ice Cream Combo, and decided to go with the Matcha Egg Puffs + Taro Ice Cream + Rose Petals: Matcha Egg Puffs - I would've liked a stronger matcha taste, but the egg puffs themselves were delicious; fragrant (think Eggos x10), warm, and the perfect balance between crispy & soft. Taro Ice Cream - It was a reeeeally big fat scoop! There wasn't anything special about it, but ice cream in general goes really well with egg puffs. Rose Petals Topping - Depends if you like rose/flower-flavored desserts in the first place. I'm not too big of a fan of anything that tastes like flowers, but it was definitely aesthetically pleasing. I'd probably go with one of the Cookie Crumbs next time. All in all, Gadani's egg puffs are legit - way better than any other rando spot I've tried in SF or Oakland Chinatown. Why? + Egg puffs are very well-made, with a super crispy exterior that held its own against the ice cream quite well. Only the very bottom section turned a bit soggy after I savored it for too long. + Cheese egg puff is unique and makes for a delicious sweet and savory combination! The original egg puff was great as well with the characteristic egg-y taste, and chocolate was definitely chocolate-y and aromatic. + Good variety of ice cream flavors that rotates; feel free to sample as many as you want! Friendly service + egg waffle combos + pet therapy?! After my friend and I placed our orders, the cashier's Maltese/Pom mix came out to play and graced us with her presence. It was definitely a pleasant surprise. While my friend waited for her waffle combo (matcha waffle + Polly Ann's taro ice cream + honey drizzle), I savored my lychee ice cream. It was pretty empty so it felt like we were getting a private experience but considering it was a Sunday night, this wasn't unusual. Aside from the service, the handcrafted egg waffles were pretty good. I can tell they were freshly made. Although the egg waffle my friend ordered didn't have a strong matcha taste, the combination of hot and cold textures definitely elevated my waffle experience. Ice Rose Latte was really good! It had a slight coffee and rose taste, not sweetened, just as I like it! However, don't expect to see a pink colored drink. The employee said the rose flavor comes from the milk that is infused with rose petals. I like that it didn't have an artificial color and didn't seem to use an artificial flavor since I didn't get any unwanted aftertaste. The egg waffle was fresh and slightly crunchy along the edge. Cute little shop in the hip, lively part of Berkeley just a short walk from campus. We came in on a cold day so it was a little counterintuitive to get ice cream! However, the waffle smell was intoxicating. They also offer a wide selection of coffee/tea beverages if you need something to warm you up. The girl working the counter was very friendly and helpful, she let us sample any of the flavors we wanted to and gave us recommendations. There is plenty to choose from matcha, pumpkin, earl grey, (to name some of my faves they had to offer). She told us her favorite was the blueberry, and after a sample there was no turning back! Easily the most delicious blueberry flavored ice cream I have had - great smooth, creaminess, blueberry flavor without being ultra saccharine. They have quite a few options for toppings including the IG fave - rose petals, having never tried this the young lady let us have a sample to taste. They are dried petals, so they have a unique, paper-y crispness to them that's fairly pleasant, the rose flavor is notable, I think it is best to eat these with the actual ice cream/waffle; on their own they are a bit strong. My boyfriend and I shared the combo with a matcha egg waffle and blueberry ice cream with a chocolate drizzle. A little pricey at ~$7, but boy was this an immense amount of food! We split this between two people and it was more than enough! I think we could have gotten one half the size and still been satisfied. I hope they might consider offering a smaller size ice cream/waffle combo in the future. The matcha egg waffle was perfectly warm, crisp yet doughy, and ultra matcha and it paired very well with the sweetness of the blueberry ice cream. Gadani is one of those places that makes us pay ~$8 for store bought ice cream neatly placed in mediocre execution of a Hong Kong style egg waffle and made to look pretty. First, I will give them props for coming up with a creative concept that lands itself nicely to being photographed and their marketing to bring people in and get away with charging us ridiculous sums. The place is nice and clean and has the perfect wall with their name (an Instagram wall as I like to call it). I hope the quality improves over time and it becomes more justifiable beyond the one time picture. You'd think that for $8 they'll have their own special in-house ice cream, right? Wrong. Fine, maybe they figured that there is no point of trying to reinvent the wheel when they can get high quality, organic ice cream from Tara, right? Sort of. In reality only 2-3 of the flavors are actually sourced from Tara while the rest are Dreyer which you can pick up from anywhere. OK then maybe it's the egg waffle that makes it great? Not really. While I applaud them for bringing Hong Kong style egg waffles to Berkeley and even making various flavors, the execution is mediocre at best and definitely does not justify the high price tag: the texture is a bit off to me and a bit too smooth, thicker and the chewiness is just wrong. Not to mention that the ratios are off and you'll end up with too much waffle if you don't share it and you'll get sick of it. Gadani is an example of how much people are willing to overpay for the Insta pic. TL;DR overpriced mock Asian egg puffs, but cute store! I shared a waffle ice cream combo with and friend. If you're getting the waffle ice cream combo, I'd definitely recommend sharing because it'll end up being too much or you'd get sick of it. First, the heavy marketing on serving Tara's ice cream seems a bit deceiving because only two flavors of about eight to ten flavors are actually Tara's. The rest are Dreyer's ice cream, which I can just get at Safeway. I didn't notice this until my friend pointed out that the labels were Dreyer's, so that was pretty disappointing. Next, the waffle itself was not that good. I stuck with original to play it safe, but it didn't even meet my lowest expectations. The texture was weird, very smooth, which isn't the norm. The bite and chewiness also did not meet expectations. The butter cookie topping, however, was crunchy and delicious. Everything combined into the cup was also difficult to eat because the spoon can't break the waffle and scoop ice cream, so I ended up having to awkwardly ripping it off and trying to get some ice cream on because the waffle was pretty bland. Even though the food itself isn't that great, you can get an instagram worthy picture. They have a cute wall with flower decor, the perfect background, only if someone is not eating there already. The shop is small, cute, has some seating, and a pretty nice menu selection to choose from. You can get ice cream, waffles, coffee, tea, a variety of things. I ordered the red bean matcha bubble waffle with matcha ice cream, condensed milk, and red bean topping. It cost around $8 but it was worth it because the waffle was cooked fresh when I ordered it and the ice cream is smooth and delicious. They don't have a restroom or sink to wash your hands if ice cream drips out of the paper "cone" holding the waffle so I used napkins and the free water they offer. I've been seeing this place all over my Instagram! It's great for a post-dinner treat in Berkeley, but make sure you don't come here absolutely stuffed from dinner like I did in order to fully maximize your experience :D Came on a Saturday night around 8 pm and it was (surprisingly) almost empty. I had a very filling Indian meal right before coming, so I ended up sharing a combo waffle + ice cream + topping ($7.85) with a friend and only got a few bites of each, but everything was delicious! Went with the matcha waffle and vanilla ice cream with a wafer topping (a very classic combo). While nothing absolutely blew me away with its taste, everything was delicious and paired well together, not to mention the presentation was on point. There is some very limited seating both inside and outside, but overall it seems like it's more of a grab and eat quickly (or grab and go) spot. Parking can be difficult in this area as it is close to the campus and is all street parking. The finished product was definitely IG worthy, which I'm assuming is why they're so popular. Sadly, their egg puffs were not as light and fluffy as they should be. They're super dense and chewy--this was the same with both the original and matcha flavors. The scoop of ice cream was also on the small side for the price. The topping was unnecessary and didn't add anything to the waffle or ice cream. I wasn't upset at all because I understand if things are slow at a small business sometimes it makes sense to close a little early. It was so light and airy and had a great chew to it. The lavender ice cream was creamy and decadent. I got whipped cream and honey as my toppings which went really well with the ice cream. And she put the perfect amount of toppings on! Not too much and not too little! No boba, and only two ordinary types of milk tea on the menu (black or green) - although this is probably sufficient. First time eating ice cream with an egg waffle! But not just anyyyy egg waffle, it was a CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY egg waffle! Anyway, you're able to choose one flavor ice cream of your choice and if you're feeling bold, you can add an extra scoop for a whopping $2 more (which I think is fashooo worth it). Once you choose your ice cream, you can pick a variety of two complimentary toppings. We decided to go with the Pecan Butter ice cream with condensed milk and rose petals. This specific combo with the choc/strawberry egg waffle was perfection! They have plenty of choices with how to make your egg waffle ice cream, so let your imagination run wild. They do have lattes and tea but majority of the guests ordered the dessert. As far as the inside goes, the line can get pretty long depending on what people order and there isn't much space to wait around. However, they do have small tables and chairs outside if you don't get lucky on finding a spot to sit inside. We waited for about 10-15ish minutes which wasn't bad. Overalllll, do I recommend this nice little ice cream spot? Answer, hells yes. Gadani's a great place to enjoy a filling dessert. My boyfriend and I came here during their 2pm-6pm Happy Hour deal, which I believe is ending 3/16/18 (but may come back, who knows!) Since there was a promotion to get the seasonal drink for $1.99 with any purchase, we went for it on a whim and chose the Butterfly Pea Passion Fruit Tea. The drink has a really pretty color gradient and is supposed to be mixed before drinking. At first I thought it was too sweet, but after some of the ice diluted I really liked it, and the tea flavor is just strong enough! As for the egg puff ice cream combo, I liked it but probably won't get it again anytime soon since it is a lot to finish. I'm more likely to come back to get a scoop or two of ice cream (the coffee ice cream was really good!) I got the double chocolate egg puff with coffee ice cream and rose petal toppings. The churro egg waffle is perfectly sweet and is the exact crispy level I love. Yes, definitely be back for that! Just ok, there are definitely spots with better egg puff waffles, the ice cream is decent too. I did ask for condensed milk but she put caramel instead. I'm not super picky about things like that so I didn't ask to change it. Other wise it was ok. You can order on a kiosk which was cool at first but quickly got confusing and you cannot use your yelp check in discount through the kiosk; which we didn't know until after we had already spent 10 mins trying to figure out how to use the machine and put all 6 orders on it. One ice cream + waffle combo was about $8 so it was definitely more on the expensive side. Would I come again? Probably not but it wasn't the worst place ever. read more
