This is a small cozy spot and not much parking near by but it has a nice vibe to it and for all you introverts out here there is a self ordering machine available if you don't want to talk to anyone. Gadani is such a cute, cozy dessert spot in Berkeley! It's perfect for when you've gotten dinner in the area and want something sweet like an egg waffle or ice cream. My go to is the ice cream egg waffle combo. The waffle isn't too sweet which helps balance out the ice cream. If you like cinnamon, you NEED to get the horchata ice cream. It's so creamy & delicious!! You go inside and order on a kiosk, which is really convenient. The employees will make your dessert and serve it to you and they are always so sweet! There's also a little area where they sell earrings, socks, and other little things from Asia which are really fun and cool :) The inside of Gadani is quite small, probably can only fit maybe 5-7 people max for seating, and there's no public bathroom. I ordered the matcha red bean waffle, and it was good! It came out hot, but not too hot to eat. The matcha flavor was there, but not very strong. The red bean was a great touch, but I wish there was more! I didn't try the ice cream but I saw that they had cookies and cream, lavender, and several other standard flavors that I can't remember. I would come back if I was in the area. They gave a ordering system where you use a touch interface machine to order and pay. Seems like this is the only way to order. Came here with the gf after dinner for a sweet treat. Although I did not realize it initially, I actually had Gadani bookmarked for awhile so it was definitely great to check off another thing on my Yelp list of places to try! The store itself is small, but very cute and has a great fake grass backwall that is definitely great for those IG pics. To order, you can either use the self-serve kiosk at the front, or go up to the cashier. For our trip this time, we got the chocolate & strawberry waffle cone with a scoop of blueberry yogurt ice cream. It takes a good 10mins to make, but is well worth the wait! The waffle itself is hot and fluffy, and is delicious to have together with the cold, deliciously flavored ice cream. Make sure not to spend too long snapping pics because the ice cream melts fast and will easily drip through the bottom of the paper cone. In addition, although we did not notice this initially, there is an offer through Yelp for 10% off your first order which can be texted to you. The matcha egg puff has a little bit of bitter aftertaste which makes it much different than the regular egg puff. I like that their egg puff is very crunch and doesn't have too much dough. My first impression when I first entered this dessert store was that the interior was decorated super vibrantly! With one of the walls entirely covered with greenery and cute nature decorations all around the store, Gadani definitely is an aesthetic environment that has a great vibe. I think that the egg puff they serve with the ice cream is pretty unique around this area, since I haven't seen it at any other places around the Berkeley area at least. We got the chocolate egg puff--which was warm and crispy--and it contrasted well with the coldness of the ice cream that was served! We got the cookies and creme ice cream with chocolate sauce drizzled on top, which made it really sweet and tasty! The ice cream was pretty smooth, and overall the presentation of the dessert was very nice! Located on Shattuck parking here can be a doosey so I would suggest walking to this place. When you walk in you're greeted with their minimalistic and clean interior with their well known plant sign to the left and plants on shelves near the register. In terms of seating they have about 3 window bar stools, 2 tables inside, and an additional 2 tables outside. If you couldn't tell their most popular dish is the Combo ($7.95) - Egg Puffle Waffle + Ice Cream + 1 topping. With tip it came out to a little over $9 for just one item. Not the cheapest place to get egg puffs but it was totally worth it for us. I enjoyed the fact that they let you sample as many ice cream flavors before ordering because let's be real, green tea, toasted almond, etc. it's hard to choose. We opted to get the classic Gadani waffle with toasted almond ice cream and a honey drizzle. YUM. My mouth is just watering thinking about how good it was! Once you order it takes about 5-10 mins to get your item and all utensils are self-serve from where you pick up your sweet treat. Now on to the dessert itself. The egg puffs were nice and crispy on the outside and just the right amount of fluffiness on the inside. I've had experiences with my egg puffs getting overcooked so this was a nice change. They scoop the ice cream right in the center so no need to worry about it melting all over the cone. It's perfect because as you eat the egg puffs at the bottom soak up all the melted ice cream and omg. For the drink, I was a little disappointed it wasn't topped off with a mint leaf, like the one it advertised in the poster - but I don't eat the mint so it was okay. The overall drink was light in flavor, so I took it like a refreshing drink. My family, on the other hand, said it was just a lightly steeped green tea and they were disappointed that the cheese cream didn't change the drink flavor. From the elegant name , to the beautiful dried rose petals sprinkled onto the ice cream-It exudes elegance, and I had to get my hands on one of these picture perfect desserts. Ice cream combo : Comes with your choice of any egg waffle , Ice cream & topping . I was really excited since this was my first trying egg waffle . I opted to go for the plain waffle, with coconut ice cream & and the rose petals . After they scooped the ice cream in the waffle they sprinkled some honey on top of the ice cream followed by a heaping sprinkle of the rose petals. Lovely. The coconut + honey combination worked since the flavors were subtle and not too sweet which I liked . On the other hand , I took a bite of the egg waffle and it was too crunchy for my liking . I was thinking it would've been a softer chewy consistency. I ended up just eating the ice cream and not caring too much for the egg waffle. I also tried pistachio flavor and it was way too sweet. No bueno . 3/5 Overall , I'd probably give this place another try if they revised their recipe for a better egg waffle + got better flavors of ice cream. I love this place! I ordered the ice cream combo with lavender ice cream and the matcha egg waffle, and it was amazing. They have so many unique flavors and toppings, and I definitely want to come back and try more. It's a bit expensive, but you get a waffle and the ice cream and you can't get egg waffle elsewhere nearby, and Yelp gives you a 10% discount on your order if you check in! There's something off about this place... We visited on a Saturday afternoon (2/24/24) and it was completely empty, including nobody behind the counter. Since there was a digital ordering kiosk, though, we decided to start making an order thinking that someone in the back was probably just waiting for an order to come in through the system. We discussed what we wanted for 5 minutes and before submitting our order, somebody finally came out the back and sleepily informed us that the kiosk actually doesn't work so we should just order at the counter with him. It was a bit strange, but we went through with the order anyway, choosing an egg waffle cone with ube ice cream. Initially, we wanted a matcha waffle cone and oreo crumbles as an add-on, but both options were out of stock... Furthermore, the guy mentioned that it would be roughly 10 minutes or so since he had to turn on the waffle iron. Again, we thought this was strange since it was a sunny Saturday afternoon; had no one else come in?? We waited for 15 minutes before our order was finally ready, which looked fine, but tasted very mediocre. We were surprised that the ube ice cream actually had no flavor at all, almost like it was old and had been sitting in the freezer for a long time with no recent refresh. We finished what we got, but it gave us very little satisfaction. To top it all off, after we picked up our order, the guy closed the store door (it was open when we arrived) and then went to the back again. It kinda felt like he didn't want the store to be open at all. We're not sure why there are decent reviews for this place on Yelp, but they were probably from a previous period of time. Don't come here, there are lots of other great options around Berkeley. Pretty sure they don't want you to come in either. read more
