Futuro is an appropriate name because that is when you'll get your coffee, far, far in the futuro. On a Sunday morning with nobody in front of us in line and three people behind the counter, it took 25 minutes to get 2 coffees and a tea. I guess that is the norm at this place because when the drinks were finally handed to us there was no "Thank you for waiting." The space is interesting and mod, but when it comes down to it, I was there for coffee (which was decent.) All in all there are better experiences in downtown. read more

Out of all the coffee shops I visited this week in Phoenix, Futuro was my favorite. It was one of the few places in Phoenix that offered a similar experience to the trendy third wave coffee shops in LA. I thought that Giant Coffee and Cartel Coffee Lab were OK, but not in the same league as Futuro. What makes this place special is ex-Cartel and ex-Giant barista Bill's pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee. His vision is to improve the coffee scene in Phoenix, which in my opinion is dreadful compared to the ones in Seattle and LA. Lola and Lux Central were highly recommended to me but they were more hype than substance. I can tell that Bill idolizes the baristas from G&B/GGET in LA, he's followed them since the Sqirl pop-up. It might explain why he sources beans from 49th Parallel, particularly the Honduras Ocotillo that was used by Charles Babinski in the 2015 WBC. The menu at Futuro is simple for now, primarily espresso-based drinks or cold brew (no pourovers), although Bill can probably customize any drink you want if you're nice. He pulls excellent shots (49th Parallel Epic) on the La Marzoco Linea, uses high quality milk (not cheap supermarket jugs), and draws the most consistent latte art in town. For non-coffee drinkers, he can make a cascara tea (made with skin and pulp of dried coffee cherries, tastes like a white tea). No, Bill doesn't make his own almond macadamia milk like at GGET or exquisite hoppy teas like at G&B (just yet), but he did let me try a cascara tea with a splash of sparkling water that was a simple yet refreshing elixir. You probably won't find it anywhere else in Arizona. Part of the coffee shop experience to me is interaction with the barista that makes my drink. An ideal barista is one who is friendly, shares the passion of coffee to customers, gets to know customers, understands what the customers like, etc. It's sharing a brief moment in the day together while the barista makes the drink. The experience should be totally the opposite of that at Starbucks, where people can order on their phone and pick up their drink at the counter without encountering the barista. Bill provides personable barista service and he's open to feedback, exactly like how it is at places like G&B and GGET. Futuro is a great concept and I hope more people in the DT Phoenix area can come check it out. It's way way better than Lux or Lola nearby. read more

You are in a futuristic space station. You have died and gone to Morgan Freeman's white-walled heaven. You are dreaming - you're a pearl inside the cavern of a shell. White in every direction: white wall, white brick, white light. YOU are the highest contrast in the room. Outside, colors jump and spread like weeds. Green grass, blue sky, gravel black, tones of dust and bark and brick. You are oblivious to these elements, having entered the milky chamber of dream. But it's not an illusion. It's not a mirage. You're standing two steps inside the entrance of the Palabra building just off 1st Street and Roosevelt in the heart of Roosevelt Row. The interior is spacious and obstinately white. Minimalist, lucid, pure. You can count the number of seats on the fingers of one hand. Occasional bursts of green emanate from hearty potted plants - curated eruptions of nature - intentioned for the space. Light here is a blanket; shadows don't exist. You feel the urge to breath deeply, and slowly: there's space for it here. You are greeted by Jen, the barista, who is pleased to help you navigate the menu, all in Spanish. (The menu is a single white sheet, stuck to skin of spotless glass.) Jen is dressed in contrast - black and white - a mirror of the habitat she tends. Based on her description, you decide to try the Tónico, an artful blend of sweet tonic water and espresso. (It is bitter like a shock.) The barista bar, the fixtures, the walls, the rafters - all are freshly painted perfect white. Local art pops from the wall as it stretches like infinity to your left. There are two seats facing it (both black), a marble table, nothing more. The back gallery is closed off for a photo shoot. Models and photographers siphon to and from its sectioned hall. There are frequent flares of light, subtle popping sounds and conversation. (Any other day, this space would open to more art, and a salon.) Seated now, you ease into the shape of relaxation. Your back is to the entrance but you feel and hear the sounds of inbound guests, outbound guests, lazy conversation. Someone asks, "What is this place?" You nod and briefly smile. CONCLUSION Futuro is an EXPERIENCE. One you definitely should not miss if you're nearby. Set within the Palabra building - a hive of other options - it has managed still to set itself apart. Palabra is not like any other coffee shop you've been to. Find a time to swing by for a drink. Peruse the local art. (Get a haircut?) The service is wonderful, the drinks are tasty, and the atmosphere is truly inspiring. As if I didn't already have a hefty list of favorites, Palabra's sitting pretty near the top. Super modern, super trendy, super clean - can't be beat! A NOTE TO THE STAFF Jen, you were the best. Thanks for hooking me up with a really unique drink. Thanks for loving what you do. Futuro is a minimalist's paradise. Harsh, bright lights. Walls that are blank, save for some paintings on one and a projection of some art on another. Concrete floors. Limited seating. One end feels like a lounge in a modern art museum, and the other, with its long, glass table feels like a conference room. Items laying about during my visit indicate the vision for Futuro may not be quite finished. But if the disorganization were intentional, I do not think that would come as a surprise. Even the menu, written in exclusively Spanish for some reason, is incredibly short. But the espresso is great--top five I've had in the valley. The milk splashed into mine came from a brand I am unfamiliar with...but it was so rich and flavorful, I couldn't help but feel it was not something you could just buy in any store. As I observed the pale void before me, the barista offered me a small glass of water, which one should always have with their caffeine before a return to summer weather. It was too soft to have come from the tap. Much obliged. The small courtesies and extra miles make any first impression more memorable. Overall, this place feels...strange. Unfinished. Sterile. Mysterious, even. It's the type of place I'd meet someone if I wanted them to take me seriously. Overall, it has a good product, but I believe it's in the early stages of something better. read more

First off, parking can be a bit tricky but your best bet is to park on the streets via the meters. Which totally sucks but what can you do, it's midtown. Looking past that and onto the interior, gorgeous. Tastefully designed. You know how most ladies envision their dream kitchen or bathroom to be all white? They could probably add this to their list of dreams. I suppose I should mention the coffee here, which happens to be awesome as well. F**KING AMAZING! My boyfriend and I are avid coffee drinkers and during quarantine we have found small pleasures in exploring a new coffee shop every day throughout the valley. From tempe, Phoenix, Arcadia, Chandler, Scottsdale, and Gilbert. This is one of my absolute new favorite places we have ever tried. It was so good that we went back two days in a row. The cafe de olla was our favorite. It's so delightful and perfectly balanced. The citrus notes within really brighten and sweeten the drink without it tasting like a novelty drink. I feel like sweetness can tarnish the integrity of good coffee but here at Futuro, they know exactly how to balance their drinks. The sandia is so nice and refreshing especially here in Arizona. I love the touch of mint. The Cajeta drink reminds me of the round cajeta patty candies that we used to eat in Mexico as a kid. And also, THE CONCHAS ARE THE BEST CONCHAS I HAVE EVER HAD. the cinnamon ones were so soft and moist. The texture of the pan and the flavor really shone through. Don't even get me started on the ambiance or else this review would take up a whole page haha but overall the service, coffee, pastries and products were awesome. We even ended up buying a package of coffee and the gentleman barista was so kind as to grind up the coffee beans for us since we don't have a grinder. He was so helpful while explaining the varietals of coffee to us so we could choose wisely. 10/10 read more

I'm going to just review my latte rather than the space (more on that later). My latte had a rich taste and yet smooth finish. They currently do not offer additional flavors. That said, the barista [owner?] told me that they would probably add flavors in the future. At any rate, a good latte, no complaints. As for the space? Well, they just opened so the space seems to be a work in progress. Right now it's essentially an art gallery with a coffee bar, front and center. The entire space has a VERY clean, all white modern design esthetic, very Jony Ive-esque, beautiful in its simplicity. The two rooms to the left and right are FILLED with art. They clearly know where they are (Roosevelt Row) and are proud share the artistic values of the district. As a neighbor, I couldn't be more pleased to have these guys in the hood, they get it. The space currently has no tables or really anything to chill out on. There are some chairs, but as nice as they look, they are not exactly welcoming or comfortable. Again, the place just opened so hopefully there will be couches, tables and copious amounts of power outlets forthcoming. One thing that most new coffee shops overlook/forget about, is the music/sound system, but THAT is already installed here and it sounds GREAT. BIG ups on that. So far this looks like a pretty solid, (and perhaps, pre-mature) start. I'll be back and updating my review as the place gets more established. read more

As I opened the door. The cool air in the shop treated me to a pleasant welcoming, massaging my face and complementing my workout attire. First, the coffee is perfect. They have handmade syrups and very unique drinks focusing on a Mexican flavors. They are served in beautiful ceramic cups made by a local craftsperson. The space is very interest and beautifully architecturally; clean lines, open space and white with all natural light. Seating is pretty limited and the tables are small. There was an open gallery with pieces by a local artist and a hair salon also in the space. The baristas seemed a bit stand-offish but maybe she was just shy. They were otherwise pretty nice and answered any questions. I highly recommend this cafe. read more

I saw this place on Instagram and knew I wanted to try it whenever my work decided to send me on a trip. The shop itself is beautiful and I love the aesthetic of it. It has a nice feel and the barista was super friendly. I ordered El Tònico as I saw it on Instagram and was intrigued by it. It's tonic water and espresso. I love to try knew drinks so I gave this a shot. Unfortunately, it wasn't so much my cup of coffee. I think it's a bit too bitter for my taste, but I absolutely give credit to the espresso. It tasted very rich and it was well done. I just couldn't overlook the tonic water. I would definitely go back and try other espresso drinks though if I find myself back out here. IMHO the bar needed to be raised in Phoenix for coffee and what Futuro has created will hopefully inspire this level of product with other coffee spots throughout the valley. The little things are what make the difference. Jorge, the proprietor of the coffee shop and adjoining Palabra salon is a true artist both in his coffee making, interior design skills, and the art of hair styling. Futuro does not roast their own beans but have spent much time sourcing beans only from the best roasters. Utilizing high quality beans that have been roasted to perfection coupled with high level barista skill sets make their product second to none in the valley. The decor is directly in line with name "Futuro". You will see as soon as you enter the property. They just expanded their hours from a closing time of 3p to 7p to accommodate us late caffeine addicts. read more

Yet another awesome coffee shop in downtown Phoenix! I came here with a friend on a Sunday and this place was empty... I can kind of see why. The coffee shop itself is cold... sleek and modern...hipster -y for sure... but not inviting. The space doesn't really invite people to sit and relax. The chairs are sparse and not particularly comfortable. The one amazing upside of the space.... parking! They have a few parking spaces behind the building. Anyway, the point is, this place is more like a walk up coffee bar vs a coffee shop to hang out in. I love that this shop uses Danzeisen milk (delish and local)... was a little disappointed that their coffee isn't locally roasted, BUT my latte was amazing, so I really can't complain. The clean, trendy atmosphere is complimented by the rich and velvety mocha I ordered and the cool ambient music that played throughout the building. The barista was super sweet and explained the menu to me and made a cute little latte design since I told her I wanted to take pictures. We were very excited when we found out that 49th parallel coffee was being served so we headed right over. The space is trendy, artistic and stark- with an open air door that places the coffee bar and barista squarely in the middle as the centrepiece.
