Gotta love these owner on premises places--what a sweet woman who waited on me and gave me an apple-filled bear claw, which had nice fresh doughiness, but the filling tasted more like pie filling from a can, but I liked the crumbly bit topping over the too-sticky glazes most places always put on bear claws. This one actually looked more like a claw too with discernible appendages that were fun to pull off one by one for ease of eating. Unfortunately, I wanted to try some of the more unique donuts I'd read about, esp. the maple-bacon, but they were all out by the time I arrived at 11:00 am.m so my choices had to be from the more usual items. Our family did a fun staycation in Phoenix over winter break and stayed at an Airbnb a block from rainbow donuts. We didn't plan that, but it was a nice coincidence. Rainbow donuts box says, "best donuts in arizona." I don't know if I would agree, but this it's a great local spot that you'd love to have in your neighborhood. We got a variety of raised and cake donuts and they were all delicious. Nothing overly "fancy" like other places that put half a vending machine on a donut... yuck! But high quality versions of all the classic donuts. Our favorite was the maple, buttermilk donut. A great balance of crunchy, tender, sweet and salty. These donuts are amazingly soft fluffy like a pillow all day. I went in at 530 the other day just to check, and definitely they where. The store is always clean and staff is always smiling. Best doughnuts I have ever had in my life...and they're right here in A.Z. *Rainbow gets (5/5) stars *BoSa Donuts are (3.5/5) stars *Krispy Kreme is pretty good @ (2/5) stars *Dunkin' = negative stars like (-5/5). I literally threw it out to the pigeons. They should be called Dunkin' Don't's. They taste like bread. My favorite doughnut flavor is Bavarian Cream-filled. Dunkin only has vanilla fill and it tastes like cheap vanilla frosting. Krispy Kreme Bavarian cream is good, but tastes like vanilla pudding. KK is also available at gas stations if that tells you anything. I was loving BoSa Bavarian cream for years because it actually tastes like Bavarian cream. Then... I ate at Rainbow Donut. Rainbow tastes like the real deal...like gourmet chef-made desserts. Their Bavarian cream tastes fresh, not from a mix or expensive can. I've had other flavors, too, and they're just as authentic. The raspberry filling tastes like...well, raspberry--not canned goo from Walmart. The Buttermilk doughnuts are rich and to-die-for and worth every calorie.
