Not your typical hotpot. Actually, I wouldn't call it hot pot. Basically, steamer for your food. And at the end, your reward is the succulent flavor from the steaming incorporated into a broth or congee. I love the concept as it is definitely way healthier. Because of their unique process, there are limitations of what ingredients they serve.
For example, currently they do not have a beef option because it's too complicated to cook. For now, there is an abundant of seafood. Fresh seafood, but at the price of supermarket. Thus, it is pricey and you never know what you'll be paying the next day. Despite the pricey seafood, other items were pricey that SHOULDN'T be. C'mon, 75% of your menu is seafood, no need to make us pay $8 for a small appetizer dish.... For three, we ordered the following:
- 1 jellyfish appetizer dish
- 1 lb of live prawn (Worth)
- 1 lb of clams
- 1 medium sized catfish
- 1 half chicken
- 1 small lobster
- 1 very small scallop
- 1 small vermicelli
- 1 dish of greens
- 1 dish of turnip
In addition to the seafood, there are some appetizer and cooked food that can get you started while you wait for your food to steam.
We were seated immediately and beat the rush. We were new and had no clue what was supposed to happen. A one sided menu that was somehow complicated for me to understand. And with just one piece of paper you would think they would invest in it. Nope, it was wrinkly as hell and some corners were torn. Moving on.
We were unsure how to order so a waiter came to help. My brother and I sitting while my dad talks business with the waiter. Or so that's how it seemed since the waiter seemed more like a salesperson. He wasn't very helpful or honest as he just wanted us to spend as much $$$ as possible...
We ordered the porridge and was cautioned it'd be about an hour or longer. If you ever made porridge at home, an hour was very reasonable. Our food slowly arrives. Very slowly. Unsure what to do next. We sit and wait while our stomachs are starving. A couple of waiters deliver our food but no one really helps us or explain to us what's supposed to happen. It was very frustrating because we're just sitting there pondering whether it was like hot pot that we do it ourselves. I wouldn't have mind except that I didn't know how to operate that darn pot! (Well I eventually figured it out)
After leaving a frustration on my face, the same guy waiter who took our order noticed and finally explains and starts our steaming process. Essentially, you place your items and set a timer. Once timer goes up, food is ready. Usually someone will hear it and take the lid off for you. Once you finish your food, they prepare the next batch. The most frustrating part was having to wait for them. And it wasn't like they had that many tables either.
My thoughts overall:
- I have nothing against their food. In fact, I really enjoy the process of steaming and having to wait for the food. Regardless of how long it may be, the experience of having dinner and being able to have a conversation is great!
- The porridge was definitely a lot tastier than I've had.
- Food is a lot healthier since there's no oil
What I seriously UNLIKED that overruled the positives was the staff professionalism. No one bothered to explain to us what was happening. Service was slow and uncoordinated. We repeated orders to the same waiter and was forgotten. Again, we repeated orders to a different waiter and again, forgotten. The most ridiculous part was how there is a 15% gratuity automatically charged regardless of party size. Because of their "service," 15%. Uncalled for because if someone were to tell me how to operate it in the beginning and give me the timing for each dish, then I'd do it myself. I'd do a better job at it, too. At least I wouldn't have to flag someone down each time.
To be honest, this place overcharges customers. It's not like it's really that hard to do it yourself especially when it's not even marinated. Even AYCE hotpot $30/person would be cheaper. Not sure if I want to spend $175 here again... read more
