Came for dinner on Friday night and it wasn't too busy. This is a seafood-focused restaurant, so it's definitely a splurge meal. The menu requires a bit of deciphering because some things are priced per unit, some per KG (with minimums that are not listed), and some per serving, so just look closely and ask questions so you know what you are getting. This style of restaurant is unique and the first time I have eaten this way. You steam the food above a pot of congee which takes on some flavor from the meat, then you eat the congee at the end of the meal. Lots of delicious options, and I especially loved the handmade shrimp balls - I wouldn't miss those! Also be aware of the timing on the cooking. Food and service were good until the bill came out. They were literally staring at me, looking at how much I tip. I had a total of $620 on me, so I gave it all--$500 cash plus a $46 tip for two people. Then the server proceeded to ask me, "Why only $46? Is the service not good?" and asked me to write down why I tipped only that much. Keep in mind, tipping is not mandatory. It made me really uncomfortable when the waitress kept staring at me as I paid my bill. Maybe the boss needs to pay employees a little more so they don't have to worry about people tipping less than 20%. I would tip more if I had more to give, and there's always next time when I come back and realize I should overtip because I was treated nicely and they didn't bother me about my tip. But forget it--I won't come back because of how they made me feel on my birthday. That's karma. To whoever owns this place, please don't force your servers to ask customers why they don't tip at least 20%. They will ask you to choose a soup base, which will be steamed at the bottom of the pot and served at the end in a porridge form, so don't be full before getting to the porridge which is very filling! On top of the soup base, they will ask you to order seafood, which will be steamed. We ordered a selection of clams as well as fish, which in hindsight is definitely two much for 2 people. The seafood are not seasoned for the fresh taste, but there are sauces at a small corner, which I do recommend getting unless you are shooting for just the fresh taste of the seafood. The perfect place for fresh Cantonese seafood!! The concept of this place is to steam the seafood or meat and let the juices trickle into the pot of soup or congee underneath it. I believe there's only two restaurants in the bay area with this restaurant concept, so it is definitely a MUST visit if you're on the peninsula side of the bay! We came on a weekday night, so there weren't many people at the restaurant. That being said, parking was extremely easy!! The restaurant is located in the plaza with 99 ranch, so parking might get hectic on weekends. We ordered the clams, sweet shrimp, sea clams, scallops, beef tongue, vermicelli, Chinese cabbage, fish tofu, and lava buns! We also ordered the spareribs with herbs congee for the base. All was the perfect amount to feed five people. Everything here tasted amazing!! The seafood was very fresh, so all the seafood had a sweet taste to them! The shrimp were also still moving when we got them to exemplify it's freshness lol. The congee at the end was also very tasty and savory from all the seafood juices that dropped into it. They make sure to keep the congee bland so the juices can help flavor it throughout its cooking process. Service is also phenomenal! The cook all the food in front of you, and they make sure to set a timer to ensure everything is cooked perfectly. I loved every noodle soups I've tried here so far (traditions, hot & sour, tomato beef) all has been super flavorful and filling for the $16-18 price point. We went back two days in a row. Make sure to make a reservation as it can fill up pretty quick during dinner hours. Most of these food items are not marinated (which is a plus!) but they do have a sauce station. We ordered a handful of seafood and protein items. Basically, everything goes into the steamer to cook and all the liquids will drip down into the bottom to either a soup or porridge dish as your last dish - yum so flavorful! And the servers basically helps put all the items onto the steamer pot, so pretty good customer service. I recommend getting the live shrimps (more fresh and sweet compared to the frozen ones), pork belly slices, abalone with the vermicelli, and the handmade beef & shrimp balls. Glad we finally checked this place out, idea is you steam everything you order and all the lovely drippings from the cook end up in a pot at the bottom to create a nice stock. We ordered the chicken/conch soup base and steamed sable fish, flank steak and chicken with ginger and scallion. There is a sauce table where they have their house soy sauce, chili oil, fresh garlic, cooked garlic, sesame oil etc. The sable fish was extremely fresh and tasty. At the prices they charge we didn't think we would be full (party of 4) but by the end we were all completely full. Service was great and attentive. That makes zero sense because by then, we were full and ate all of the rice already.. The food itself: Zero seasoning except the garlic they offer to put on the steamed food. Abalone was hard af and chewy like plastic. Scallops were fishy and slimy. Black bass literally tasted like rocks and sand (they didn't clean it well). The yellow chicken soup base tasted like water. Fish tofu tasted like it was sitting in water being thawed for hours. You guys..... I cannot make this up. Also, the waitress didn't clarify they were charging 16$ for ONE abalone. We asked for 4 and all she said was "Okay, 16$" and did the same for other seafood items. When our bill came out, it was 310$! Some faults that taint an experience are excusable, and some are not. Located in the Skyline Plaza (99Ranch) in Daly City, Fresh Elements boasts a trending concept in the Bay - steaming raw food right at your table. Conceptually, you select a la carte from a selection of "live" seafood, sliced beef, chicken, dumplings, and vegetables. The food is steamed on a tray in an steaming apparatus in front of you. Beneath the tray, you can select between a soup base or porridge. The drippings from the food you select flavor this soup/porridge for consumption at the end of your meal. For our 7:30 reservation, we were the only party dining in the entire restaurant. I quickly noticed that the fish/crab/shrimp in the live tanks, weren't exactly alive. All the shrimp were laying on their sides, motionless. Our server however, assured us they were all alive, and that she would "show us". Though not convinced, we ordered a dungeness crab, 2#'s coral prawns, a live sablefish, clams, scallops, dumplings, and a host of appetizers. Note that 75% of the menu was out-of-stock, so we were extremely limited in what we were actually able to sample. I'm particularly sensitive to food safety, as my wife is 8 months pregnant, and I eagerly awaited the display of LIVE coral shrimp - maybe they had some in the back? The shrimp were brought out sandwiched between two plates, and slid onto the steaming tray with the top plate to cover the shrimp (unnecessary when you have the clear steaming cover already). This was rather "fishy" and I immediately lifted the steam cover and plate to reveal what I had suspected - mostly dead shrimp. 2/3 of the shrimp were very clearly opaque, and been dead for some time. The other 1/3 of the shrimp were alive, albeit barely. A child could notice the difference in the dead vs alive shrimp. I did not appreciate the restaurant trying to trick us, especially after I had pointed out our concern prior. The dungeness crab was the smallest I had ever seen, and the sablefish was bony (though we were warned of this prior). The scallops and clams, while pricey ($13/pp), were fine. These were frozen product, lightly prepped, and reheated. The steamer was set on a timer, so none of the food was overcooked. The porridge at the end was satisfying. The meal came out to $100/pp. Ultimately, this restaurant likely suffers from a lack of business volume impacting selection and freshness of their offerings. And trying to pull a fast one on your patrons by feeding them dead product, especially to one that is pregnant, is quite dangerous. read more

Beware and be ready to spend $300-$1000 for your meal with questionable service. This USED to be our all-time favorite place, and my family would travel all the way from Vegas to eat here, sometimes night after night. However, ever since the pandemic, they have been robbing people blind. The servers started to feel like an used car salesman, always trying to up-sell you so they can demand an 18-20% tip at the end of your meal. Keep in mind, this is on top of the gratuity charge. The servers would claim that the boss takes the gratuity so they don't actually make any tip unless you add additional tip. When we first came here between 2016-2019, our bill would generally be around $80-$150 for 4-6 people, and we would leave stuffed and satisfied on fresh seafood. Towards the end, we would get charged $250-$400 per meal. This is because they never tell you exactly how much the seafood weighs. You just end up getting smacked with the overcharge on the bill at the end. You'll know this when they try to get you to order the seafood at MP market price. One of our last meals here, we were up-sold on the king crab, which I know is expensive to begin with. However, since the server said they were running a special on their last crab, we took the bait. The king crab ended up costing us $650 alone (I've had a similar sized crab elsewhere recently for ~$475). Our bill came to approximately $980 with additional $176 for gratuity charge, then the server demanded another $208 (18% tip) which came to a total of $1365.
