On the first week of September stroll before the Fall I landed at Mumu Hot Pot near Holloway avenue on Varela avenue. Inside is spacious with lots of hot pot tables. I decided to go with Tom Yum broth which wasn't as salty or sour like some in SF. I then choose to go with the Japanese A5 Wagyu Short Ribs which was tender and shrimp which was okay and the Ooh Don ( Udon) noodles which thicker than Angel hair pasta noodles. I also had much room in the hot pot for some mushroom. I washed all down with a Green Grape Four Season Iced Tea which was not too sour like some on my social media feed all four seasons. TLDR: This is excellent quality hotpot in a spacious, comfortable setting. Parking was easy, hours are extensive, service was good, and we found all the ingredients to be quite fresh. The classic set for 2 was the perfect amount of food. Not our favorite hotpot in the Bay, mostly because the two broths we tried were not as good as those we've had elsewhere, but we'd still come back if we were in the area. ------ FOOD: STRUCTURE - You can order sets or a la carte. Depending on how hungry and/or picky you are, the sets felt like a good option to get a variety of things. They have sets for two and sets for individuals. 1. SOUP - SICHUAN SPICY (4.5/5) Indeed quite spicy. We had to spoon out most of the chili oil and peppers, but this was definitely the more flavorful option of the two soups. More genuinely spicy than mala spicy, but maybe mala is easier to spoon out than chili oil. 2. SOUP - MISO (3/5) The waiter said the most-ordered soups were Miso, Sichuan Spicy, and Tom Yum, so maybe my expectations for miso were too high. This has a slight miso flavor, but is overall pretty bland and lacks the saltiness and umami-ness of normal miso soup. 3. MEAT - WAGYU BEEF CHUCK EYE (5/5) Exceptional. Really fatty and the meat slices are really big, which makes for a more satisfying bite. Would get two of these next time. 4. MEAT - BEEF SHORT RIB (4.5/5) Another great option. Definitely leaner than the chuck eye, and a plate comes with many smaller strips of meat vs. the chuck eye. This is eaiser to share for a big group. 5. MEAT - KUROBUTA PORK COLLAR (1/5) We usually love kurobuta but we didn't even want to eat this after our first bite. It smells extremely strongly of (soured) pork and has a weird and strong taste too that I've never experienced with pork. It's like the strength of an extremely gamey lamb, but for pork. Not sure if this was just a bad serving? 6. SIDE - PORK TENDON (4/5) Came with four knuckle-sized tendons which, after cooking, became very soft (not chewy), kind of like the taste and texture of a century egg. We likely this more than we thought we would! 7. SIDE - TILAPIA (4/5) Standard fish filet. Again, only four-ish slices so not that much. May or may not get again. 8. SIDE - FRIED BEANCURD ROLL (3/5) Wouldn't get again. Not freshly fried like at some other hotpot spots. Not crispy, kind of just doughy even though it looks like it was fried at one point. Doesn't hold soup well and just dissolves into a wet pile after being in soup. 9. CARB - RAMEN (5/5) These didn't feel pre-frozen. They almost felt like they were freshly made, though I assume that's not the case. Really liked them, had a very satisfying texture, almost like the sturdiness of soba / buckwheat noodles. 10. CARB - UDON (3/5) Typical udon portion, but it was so frozen that it was icy on the bottom. I think this impacted how well the noodle cooked. Not my favorite. 11. VEGETABLES - ASSORTED (4.5/5) We didn't get to choose these but received a nice assortment of napa cabbage, spinach, enoki mushrooms, portabella mushrooms, fried tofu, silken tofu, broccoli, and tofu skins. All were high quality and tasty. SAUCE BAR SITUATION There's an unlimited sauce bar that is well maintained with all the typical spicy sauces, umami sauces, green garnishes (cilantro, green onion), and dark sauces. There are no sides (chicken feet, egg slices, peanuts, etc) or dessert-type things. ------ ENVIRONMENT / AMBIANCE: * This is a very clean, well-maintained space in a residential neighborhood. The interior is quite large with ~3 different large spaces inside for groups of all sizes. There's a lot of space between tables so you don't feel too crammed. * It was easy to find parking, but we came during an off-peak time so maybe that helped. There's no dedicated parking lot so you have to find street parking, which there seemed to be a lot of ------ SERVICE: * You order using a QR code at your table, which was very easy * They came by to refill our water at the beginning and end, but I could see how they might be even slower to do so during busier times of day * Otherwise, our server was pretty nice and standard. We order The Classic which serve for two people and comes: 2 x Soup base: Creamy Tomato (Sweet & Sour) and Mushroom 3 x Meat: Premium Black Angus Beef Short Ribs Boneless, Australia M9 Wagyu Chuckeye, and American Wagyu Beef Toro (40% Fat) 3 x Side: Shrimp Paste, Fish Ball with Roe, and Fried Beancurd Rolls 2 x Noodle or Rice: House Ramen and Udon 1 x Veggie Platter (Large) There's a sauce bar in the middle of the restaurant that was clean and organized. I have a nut allergy, and I appreciated that the server went to the back to check all the ingredients and confirm items that are nut free, then brought me sauces from the back just to be safe. There's a self serve sauce bar where you can make your own combination -- I recommend trying the satay at this location; it added a nice, salty meaty flavor to the sauce combo I had. You can order through a QR code, and from there you're able to select the meats, toppings, and broth you want. It isn't AYCE, but I think the pricing and the quality of the ingredients make it all so worth it. Everyone gets their own individual pot and cooker. So for my broth, I chose the Tom Yum -- I personally don't really like the tartiness and tomato flavor of the broth but I enjoy its spice. I do wish they had a spicy miso option .. But everything else makes up for this imo!! We got the wagyu beef options, the toro was definitely a favorite -- they were all great quality and fresh. Wasn't too fatty, and had beautiful marbling on each slice that was perfectly thin for shabu. For sides, I chose quail egg, fried beancurd sticks, and fishball with roe. It offers you a source of carbs -- which I will always choose udon... *_* hehe Food did take a bit to come out but that was because we were a party of six, so I didn't mind the wait too much. But when it did come, I love how they give you more toppings in your order -- like the addition of veggies like napa cabbage, spinach, bok choy, and broccoli then mushrooms like enoki and shiitake! I really like mumu hot pot so was super excited when they opened one in SF! I don't have to drive down to South Bay anymore. I usually get the yuzu shio broth for a light and refreshing broth. I have come to realize I tend to go for more beef than other proteins for hot pot and really like the short rib and the wagyu. It's nice because you get your own pot but can do a combo for two people to share the meat and vegetables. Had the shrimp paste add on and the fish add on, both of which were pretty good! The sauce bar is also pretty well stocked. I mainly keep my sauce pretty simple with garlic, green onion, cilantro, and ponzu but they have all the classic sauces including chili oil, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame sauce, sesame oil, ponzu, soy sauce, vinegar, sweet soy sauce, and even mushroom sauce. Also had no idea when I went the first time, but on my second visit, I realized that there is also a back seating area for this location! I did street parking near SF state but it looks like they're also having a parking lot around here... not sure about this part yet. Pretty attentive staff from both visits so far. read more

The portions are plenty and definitely enough for two people to eat until they're full. We got these meats and sides: 1. Sides: tofu skin, udon, cabbage, tofu, mushrooms, fish balls with roe, choy sum, broccoli and cauliflower -sides were fresh and clean, let them soak up the flavor of the broth 3. Soup bases: tom yum and creamy tomato -tom yum has a sour taste with a slight spiciness, good if you like sour soups -tomato base had a strong tomato flavor and was light, great if you prefer less spicy bases The inside of the restaurant feels clean and well-lit, and the seats were cushioned. It was also easy to ask for more broth and more water from the waiters. Ordering is also easy, as you order using a QR code (instead of a paper menu) and pay online. I love the Sunnyvale location and had no idea they also have one in SF near SFSU. The location is very spacious with plenty of tables. Parking can be a bit annoying though. The menu is a la carte or you can choose a combo (my recommendation). The two of us got a "Mumu Combo" and felt it was more than enough food. It comes with 4 meats and PLENTY of vegetables.
