I was at Stonestown Mall and decided to dine at Marugame Udon. I ordered the Kake broth ($5.95) with one Tamagoyaki ($2.99, egg omelette). The broth was a good temperature-- not warm and not too hot. However, the Tamagoyaki seemed smaller than before, especially since I usually order the same item. I also had the ginger on the side after finishing the udon. Overall, I would come back again if I'm visiting Stonestown.

Stopped in for an early dinner while at the mall. It wasn't busy, super quick, friendly, and delicious food. The broth is flavorful, meat tender, and noodles with good texture. Lots of seating inside and like the self serve area so you can get things at your leisure.

Been a while since I had Marugame Udon and they had a lot of new dishes to try. The Bolognese Udon was interesting, not quite a favorite. It was definitely a pasta with udon noodles, it was good to try, but wouldn't order again. Also got the Kake with green onions, tempura flakes, and tempura sides. I chose the Pork Katsu and the Potato Croquette tempura. The pork was very tough and hard to bite off, but the potate croquette was tasty and would order again! Love that they make the udon noodles here!

I've been going to this location since it opened, and it is outstanding. During the pandemic, I ate a lot of delivery Marugame, and let me say that being in person is a million times better. When you can see the steam from the noodles escape the front door on a cold day, you know you're in for a comforting, cozy, and tasty treat. The udon is really good. The noodles are silky and smooth, and they also have a great chew to them. About 90% of the time, I get the Nikutama: the broth is deep in flavor, the egg is wonderfully poached, the beef is thinly sliced and sweet. When served hot and accompanied with the tempura crisps, green onion, and grated ginger, it's out of this world. I love making the perfect bite in a deep spoon of noodle, beef, egg, and toppings. The fried sides are all pretty good, and I think the tamago is particularly good. The only tough thing is the potential wait time and difficulty finding a seat, though I've found the line moves at a speed such that you can generally find a table where someone is leaving right as you've finished paying (if you're a group of 2 or by yourself).

This is always a go-to when we want some udon! My go-to is the nikutama and I always ask them to add green onions and tempura flakes (no added $!) It's self service so you grab a tray and tell them your order and they will place the bowl on your tray after. You can also pick what tempura you want after! I like the pumpkin and tamagoyaki.

I've been here multiple times since they opened. I would've given them 5 stars before but I'm taking a star off now since things have changed. What kept me coming back often before was the low prices, the unlimited self serve tempura bits, green onions, etc, but they took that away. I didn't like how the serving trays were all very wet and gross looking. And I wish the egg yolk was runny and not well done. Also, I wish the bowls were bigger for the smaller size. It's a struggle to eat when the soups filled to the brim, but please don't give less soup based on this comment lol. Overall I still like the fresh udon and I like that they've expanded the menu.

TLDR: Excellent Udon and Tempura in a Quick Serve Cafeteria-style setting. I love the tempura and curry udon here especially. Line moves quickly. Backstory: Marugame Udon is a chain of Udon restaurants that started in Japan, but for us, we discovered it years ago while on vacation in O'ahu. Known as Marukame (but with a "K" in deference to local Hawaiian tradition) in Hawaii, Marugame Udon is best known for affordable delicious bowls of udon noodles made from scratch using flour from Japan. Fast forward several years, and we could not believe our eyes when Marugame Udon was opening shop right here in Stonestown Galleria. Marugame Udon has since expanded their menu from just udon & tempura, to also include rice bowls to address a wider variety of appetites. Walk up, and you'll typically find a longish line out the door around lunch and dinnertime, especially on the weekends. The line moves relatively quickly. Once inside, Grab a tray, study the menu and order up with the cook behind the counter. They make and cook the udon fresh right behind the glass. You are served cafeteria style, so once you get your bowl of udon or rice planted onto your tray, pick out some tempura items to go with it. Lots of different tempura items - freshly fried before you, including chicken and shrimp (my top 2 favorites) as well as vegetarian udon selections that are also good (zucchini, eggplant, etc) My favorite udon here is the curry udon, but you really can't lose with any of the udons here. I generally order a small curry udon and a couple of pieces of tempura. Yum! Once you reach the end of the tempura counter, pay up at the cashier, and find a table. Outdoor seating too, but hey.. it's kinda cold and breezy in this part of town most of the time, so take your pick. Verdict: All said, while this isn't a fancy place in the least, I enjoy coming here for the food. The service is courteous and fast and the udon and tempura is consistently good here.

Beef tomatama

Food was delicious! I'm usually not much of an udon person and didn't have high hopes, but I was pleasantly surprised! I got their classic clear broth udon which was satisfying and filling. The noodles were soft and chewy, and not tough or undercooked. The soup was very rejuvenating and perfect for a chilly day My partner got the beef tomatama which I believe is seasonal. The sliced meat paired well with the tangy, salty broth. We liked both noodles dishes and would recommend! They also have a la carte dishes you can grab yourself as you checkout which is very convenient. We got a side of fried pumpkin which was quite bland. I'm not sure if they purposefully don't season it but it was missing either some sugar or salt. They have a pretty spacious indoor and outdoor seating as well being next to the mall.

I've been to this udon shop many times while shopping around in the Stonestown area. On a Friday evening, the lines were pretty much continuous, but the turn around time for the tables were quick. I tried one of their most loved udons, their Nikutama Udon. The noodles were springy and thick and fresh, and the portion size was generous. i loved the crispy fried onions sprinkled on top along with the soft boiled egg. The sweet beef was also good and complemented the rest of the dish. However, the broth was a bit too salty for my taste. I love how everything is made fresh in front of you, and you have the option to customize with sides or tempura (I grabbed one shrimp tempura which was good and crunchy).

Always soooo delicious, especially on a chilly Fall/Winter day! Line was long on Sunday around 1pm - we waited around 25 minutes. We did get samples of their calamansi and Pineapple Sunrise drinks while in line. The calamansi was pretty good, but I'm not a fan of the Pineaple Sunrise - it tasted a bit medicinal to me. I got a large Kitsune Udon (with all included toppings) along with cheese tempura and shrimp tempura on the side. I usually get the tamago tempura but I've never seen the cheese tempura so wanted to try that. Udon here is always solid quality, and the kitsune is so deliciously sweet and soft. Portions are filling and relatively cheap. Love coming here when I go to Stonestown, and I'll definitely be back.

Creamy tantan ramen with tempura shrimp on the side
Elma C.

I had a steaming bowl of creamy tantan ramen on a rainy Sunday and it was the most comforting meal in the last month. It was rich and nutty with chili heat, thick noodles, jammy egg and tempura shrimp so crisp they crackled against the rain outside. Highly recommended!

Loved this in Hawaii and was super ecstatic with one opening up in Stonestown. It was so good when it first opened, then it started going downhill with all the broth tasting warm and overly salty. Its been a few years since I visited and today when I went, there was many newly added items. I still stuck with the original, the Nikutama. This time the broth was hot, BUT.... did their portions shrink? I typically get the large and decided to get the regular this time because it was a late lunch and dinner was coming up. I supposed it was a perfect "snack" because the bowl was gone after 3-4 scoops. They weigh their noodles so I'm not sure how this could even happen. Will probably come back when I forget about how small the portions are.

Dashi Broth
Jade L.

I came here for a light dinner while shopping at Stonestown over the weekend. The line moved reasonably fast, and eventually, I got inside and ordered a regular sized bowl of the dashi broth udon. After paying, I searched for a table to sit at and took care to avoid tripping over the multitude of random children chaotically running around the restaurant. It was honestly a really stressful environment, and for that reason alone, I'm not eager to return. Once I was seated, I tried the noodles. I've had Marugame Udon in Hawai'i and SoCal too, and I can attest the quality and taste are the same. What always strikes me about this chain is how salty the food is. While the udon doesn't taste overly salty, I can sense it and need a lot of water and tea after. This time was no exception.

Will the origiris ever come back?? I miss it so much especially the mentaiko!!

What is the difference between ready to eat packaging option and the no option when trying to order delivery?

Do they still have the vegan udon:(?

Just went on 6/1/24, and had the vegan udon. It was delicious!

Do they still have onigiri?

I wish! When I went 2 weekends ago, they didn't have it.

Is Marugame offering cold udon for takeout?

Yes they are. I'd actually ordered "hot" noodles but received cold instead recently. Check their website for options.

Do they have vegetarian options, as all the meat broths are fish or beef-based? Or when will the vegetarian alternative be back?

Yes they have dishes with no meat. The Kitsune is what I normally get when I go. It's udon noodles and tofu... And then I add plenty green onions to it.

Do any of the dishes contain dairy?

Can you pay with cash if you're dining in the restaurant?

Yes they do.

If you placed an order online for pickup. Where is the pickup? Do I wait in line or go straight to the register?

I was confused the first time too. If you order and pay online then when you enter, go to the left and there is a long table with pickup orders. Customer pickup is on the end nearest the register.

Do you have indoor dining now?

yep they do!

Does your delivery work? Can I order food now?

Is the kitsune udon vegetarian?

Yes, they now have one.

Does anyone know if Marugame is selling all of their snack sides (chicken katsu, masubi)?

I was there a couple of days ago and bought sides of tempura and croquettes

Do they have outside dining?

They have about 4 tables set up outside. Yes!

Do they have all the spam masubi and onigiris during this time? I would like some hand snacks, but don't want to drive all that way only to be told they're limiting their menu... *edit* they don't

No, I was there two weeks ago. They have chicken katsu sandwich's though.

Are they still open during SIP?

yes, take out only last week.

Hello Marugame! Do you have any *vegan options yet? What are they specifically? Past reviewers said your other branches have vegan options. This is NorCal, so I'm sure it will be appreciated by many including my friends! Thanks!

Yes they do! They have an Edamame Salsa Udon! Personally haven't tried it but heard good things about it!

Can the tonkotsu udon be non-spicy? (I.e. no chilli oil)

Yup! They add it at the end so you can tell them to hold off on the chili oil

Do they accept Apple pay?

yes, pretty sure they do.

Any gluten item?

No I don't think so

When we politely asked the server if one of the dishes could be taken back, we were told that this "has never happened before" and that we simply weren't used to Japanese-style ramen. The response felt dismissive and somewhat defensive, rather than helpful. There was no effort to address the issue, offer an alternative, or show any concern that we didn't enjoy the meal. Instead, it felt like we were just expected to pay for everything regardless of our experience. We chose not to make a scene and paid the full bill, but the lack of customer care left a lasting negative impression.
