Another visit did not disappoint! Food: Very flavorful and noticeably spicier than before. I ordered the "Just a Kick," and this time I definitely felt the heat. Ambiance: Busy and lively. We came around 6 PM on a Friday night, so it was expected. Service: Average. Food came out in a reasonable time not too fast, not too slow. Overall: A solid experience again!

Was denied by Kura and decided to check this place out instead. Been curious about this place for a while, I'm not back in SF often so I was glad we got a chance to try it. Amazing broth and selection for the items. Decent price for the amount of food and I would definitely recommend as this place is busy for a reason. Service was great, but I will say there is no one actively cleaning or picking up after someone leaves the table. It's a self clean situation, so you bring your bowls to the discard slot. To my surprise, it's all order before you seat and it's a fight to get a table. One minor issue, I wasn't sure where it came from but my brother found a dead fly in his bowl.

Hot and sour malatang

The food is quite good and a good deal. The spice is definitely there haha. All the ingredients seem to be pretty good quality. The main problem is there is no table space. I had to wait a while until a table with just two seats together opened. The line took a bit of time but not bad. I didn't know how to judge how much food was enough lol and got too much, but that's a me problem. The decor is very cool with a river in the middle of one table and many display shelves.

A little expensive, but fun experience. Lots of variety from meats to veggies. Took about 20 minutes for us to get our bowls back and tables can be tricky to find. Total came out to be about $20-$25 per bowl

There wasn't a long line this time, so it was a good opportunity to eat here again. At the entrance, you grab gloves and a large bowl, then pick your own ingredients to be cooked. The malatang is priced at $16.99 per pound. There are two options: Ma La Tang (with broth) or Savory Mix (dry with sauce). There's a huge variety of ingredients--different cuts of beef, pork, lamb, seafood, fish balls, vegetables, noodles, tofu, and more. I chose the BYO Malatang (0.78 lb) with laksa broth. It wasn't too spicy, which I liked, but I wish there was more soup base. I picked lamb shoulder, wagyu beef, fried fish ball, bok choy, rice noodles, and golden noodles, and the total came to $14.39. The portion was just right for me, and I didn't have any leftovers. Overall, I would come back again because I like the laksa soup base and being able to choose my own proteins and vegetables.

I love coming here for malatang, it's always so warm and comforting. There can be a wait during peak hours but the line keeps moving. I like how there's a wide variety of options for meat, veggies, and other toppings to choose from. I always get the chicken broth, I wish they had a sauce bar but they do have chili oil.

Just a kick, chicken broth, and hot and sour

This has been one of our go to places for soup. Flavors are always on point. I get just a kick but ask for less spicy, my husband gets the hot and sour - less spicy also. They also have chicken broth for the kids. You can easily serve yourself too much so keep in mind if it's your first time. The selection of items is better than other locations in the area. Price is dependent on weight and there is no minimum. My soup is normally $12, my husband adds much more that his on average can be $24.

First time trying. The ordering process is like an assembly line and pricing is based upon weight. As you arrive, you will pick up a bowl and gloves before making your way down an entire line of meat, seafood, veggies, and more. Once you pick out everything you wanna eat, you have the option to choose a soup or a dry stir fry and there's a selection of sauces ranging in heat. They will give you a receipt with a number on it and you just need to keep your eyes and ears out for when they call your number which will indicate when your food is ready. I opted for level one spice, which was like a sweet and spicy, with the spicy meaning into mala type spice. I also did a dry stirfry and overall the dish was really well cooked. I had a mixture of proteins like seafood and meat, and it was nice. That one was not more overcooked than the other. The heat level itself was pretty decent, especially because I do not do heat, but I was able to tolerate it. There is a water self-serve station, and when you're finished eating, you bus your own dishes to a shelf.

Ahh malatang is always a nice treat. Tang Bar isn't the cheapest, but it is situated in the mall making it prized for its convenience. In my early Tang Bar days, my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I'd end up with 2lbs of food, ~$40. Now, I make a game out of getting only 1 lb. Next, my goal is .5 lb! This can be achieved by choosing only your non-negotiables along with some heavyweight sacrifices (tomatoes). For me, that entails a variety of meat including pork, lamb, and beef (varying fat content), an intestine, a tendon, a fish ball roe (the pointy top), little bit of spinach, some sweet potato noodz, a lotus root, lil bit of enoki, and a bit of smoked bamboo shoots, sometimes a quail egg. &don't forget to ask for sesame paste and chili oil. They also have black vinegar. Have tried Just a Kick and Laksa, but would instantly regret not getting Szechuan since it's the spiciest. Taste is 2.75/5, but it does the trick. Very oily, but it fills the craving for something bad for you yet so good. If you catch my drift. I don't recommend getting their youtiao since it's not crispy when served nor their wood ear mushrooms since they're really big. Have yet to try their savory noodles since I love my soup so much, but looking forward to one day. If you didn't already know, they have a reward membership.

Came here with my brother and my boyfriend and I shared with my boyfriend. Good: - Lots of variety, you can get noodles and meat and veggies and all kinds of them - The price ended up being reasonable since I shared with my boyfriend - I liked the laksa soup a lot - Great ingredients, loved the sweet potato noodles and the tofu Bad: - If you aren't careful, you can rack up a lot of expensive stuff that is cheap material - They ran out of the tomyum soup at 3 pm - Self service so you get your own stuff Overall this was a nice stop while shopping and we even found a cozy nook to eat at and it felt secluded and nice to sit around and catch up with friends at.

Tang bar is sometimes a hit or miss. I went on a Friday night with some friends and we luckily beat the long line but it still took roughly 45 mins to get our order. For the past few years they opened, prices gradually increase every year as it's by weight so it's currently $16.99/lb and they do subtract the weight of the bowl. My go to broth is the just pickles but don't let the spice level fool you cuz it's definitely not mild LOL. Overall I would come back but not wait over 15 mins for it

This place is located at the Stonestown Galleria mall upper floor. Came here right after a birthday celebration at Activate so it was a convenient location since the mall parking is already pretty bad to begin with. They have a lot of topping options to choose from and plenty of broth choices at the end. I chose Pickled Veggies since the others seemed pretty spicy and hot. Wait times were about 20 minutes but they do have a screen above the cashier which tells you when your bowl is ready. Overall I thought it was a nice place.

Jacob C.

Every time I go to Stonestown, I do pass by Tang bar. The line is always long here for good reason. I always end up putting in more food than I realize. If you like malatang (broth), then this is for you. I typically will go for dry pot so that is why this place isn't my favorite. The mala (brothless) here is actually just the boiled ingredients, and they serve it to you without the broth. I wish it was stirfry like other mala dry pot restaurants.

We do not use powders in our broth. Our broth is prepared daily onsite from scratch with real meat and bones.

Once they started calling tables, it moved really fast. When we were seated, we ended up sharing a table with two other groups of two. I actually didn't mind it at all because there was still enough space between everyone to have privacy. It also made the experience feel more social -- I ended up chatting with the people to my right and left about the food. Everything we ordered was really good. Their popular dry fried chicken absolutely lived up to the hype and was probably my favorite thing on the menu... besides the cherry pork. I feel like nobody talks about the cherry pork enough! It was SO good -- kind of like a sweet-and-sour pork without the sour. I dipped it in soy sauce because I loved the sweet and salty combo together. The dumplings were also really good. The wrapper was thin and delicious, but my boyfriend said he wished they had a little more protein filling and less leek. The green beans are always a hit. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again was the black bean sauce noodles. Maybe I just expected a different flavor, but to me they honestly tasted like regular lo mein. I'm also not a huge noodle person in general, so I'd probably skip them next time and order something else instead. Forgot to mention their prices are on point! Definitely recommend to any of the tourists. I think the weight is definitely worth it and I love being able to take home my leftovers and eating them for lunch and dinner the next day.

He had the black bean spicy fish with white rice, and I chose the mapo tofu with fried rice. Each lunch came with tea, a cup of hot and sour soup, and an egg roll. The soup really stood out. It wasn't just a thin broth with a few scraps floating around. It was a genuine, comforting hot and sour soup with real ingredients in every spoonful. That alone made the meal feel thoughtful and complete. The portions were satisfying and well balanced, and everything arrived hot and fresh. My husband enjoyed his fish, which had good flavor and a nice texture. The mapo tofu was exactly how I like it. The tofu held its shape, which made a big difference. I do not enjoy overly soft tofu that falls apart, and this had a firmer bite that worked really well with the sauce. The dish was clean tasting, with a steady heat that was noticeable but not overwhelming. It had spice, but it did not overpower the dish or linger too aggressively. There was no pork, which I appreciated, and it still felt complete and satisfying without it. What made this meal especially meaningful for me is that I had just gotten out of the hospital a week ago after dealing with malnutrition, dehydration, and several health issues. I had not been eating well and had lost over 80 pounds in the past year. This was the first full, nourishing meal I have truly been able to enjoy in a long time. For the first time in months, I did not feel weak or fragile afterward. I felt full, steady, and strong. That kind of experience goes beyond just good food. It felt restorative. It felt like care. From what others often say, this place has built a strong reputation for bold Sichuan flavors that are still approachable. People tend to mention the generous portions, the consistent quality, and the fact that the spice levels are flavorful rather than overwhelming. It is the kind of spot that draws both regulars and first time visitors who are looking for something reliable and satisfying. Spicy House gave me more than just a meal. They gave me a moment of comfort and strength when I really needed it. We will absolutely be back.
