It was a good kind of peril. The Chow Mein Select noodles with lots of fresh crunchy vegetables was nicely executed with firm, plump chow mein. It was a very generous helping. We were looking for a place with Mapo Tofu and the reviews I read liked this place. We walk in to find a clean, new-looking dining room. There a party of four leaving just as we arrived...we had dining room to ourselves. The first surprise was when we found our dish in the Vegetable section of the menu. We are used to this dish being prepared in a spicy sauce with minced pork. I mentioned this to the very friendly server who said they could add minced pork. OK. We originally thought we would get two entrees, but after reevaluating our hunger decided to split the one entree and a large appetizer. We picked the roast duck. They brought 2 small plates, 2 water cups and 2 forks. Shortly thereafter they brought the tofu. "Would you like some rice with that?" I guess we were supposed to order rice, but it wasn't mentioned before. Two small bowls of rice came quickly. I asked them to bring two more bowls to serve the tofu and rice in...the server seemed perplexed, but the bowls arrived. I guess they expected us to eat off of the small, flat plates? The consistency of the sauce was gelatinous...too much cornstarch? There was some Szechuan peppercorn flavor. The tofu was "soft" or "silky", not firm, and definitely straight out of the package...it could not be picked up with chopsticks. The word "Ma Po" comes the pocked surface of firm tofu achieved by simmering it hot water. Then the appetizer arrived. It was a plate of slightly warm pieces of duck with a small bowl of dark, sweet (plum?) sauce on the side. I thought it was OK, but "A" thought the pieces she tried were too tough. "A" does not recommend this restaurant; I give it a "Maybe" because maybe we selected items that aren't their mainstream. read more

I found myself at the Hilton on the edge of Chinatown, and despite being on a ridiculously strict diet, decided (in the words of Dr. Emmet Brown): "Well, I figured-- what the hell?" A cursory check of Yelp revealed this restaurant just a short walk up the street. Almost out of fruit from my trip to "Dateway" near Ft. Mason (IYKYK), I called in my order and walked slowly up the street. Upon my arrival, I found the restaurant pretty much deserted. Signs of the COVID-times "to-go" set up were still evident here, perhaps a clean transition to supporting a healthy delivery business here. Food: ordered a hot & sour soup, and Mongolian beef. The soup was missing my favorite ingredient, wood ear fungus. Didn't find any shitake in there, either. Or chicken. Broth was appropriately hot and sour, though. Felt very "end of shift, and we aren't making more" in the scoop. Mongo-Beef was better: good spice, good portion. Ambiance and service: when I walked in, I was directed to pay at the self-serve credit card station. This did not print me any kind of itemized receipt, which is a bit of a bummer when you eat for business with a reimbursement account. Oh well. Still good I guess. Notably, the restaurant is on the corner within 30 seconds of no fewer than three adult themed stores: strip clubs, an XXX movie/book place, and some sort of toy store-- not the kind you would find Woody and Buzz in, but then, again... Well, never mind.... Gotta keep this family-friendly for Yelp.
