I really wanted to like this place. It is a small and local eatery. The service was fine and the drinks were yummy. We ordered a Freddo (an espresso, whipped drink that was superb) and the Iced Matcha. It had a nice consistency and not overly sweet. As for the food, the burger we ordered was dry. We asked for extra aioli, and it was different. Nevertheless, we doused the burger with the aoli and it became edible. Secondly, we had the Curry Ramen. The broth, noodles, and veggies completed the dish very well. The meat had a funky after taste and completely ruined the ramen. Lastly we had the mocha pie. It was very rich, where it became overwhelming and it had a mousse like texture. I stepped inside to use the ladies room, before I entered there was an overwhelming smell of a gas leak? This is my 2nd time trying vegan food so I'm basically going to compare this place and Native Foods in Costa Mesa Truffle burger - it was good but the buns and flavors were a bit more plain than the burger at Native. I really enjoyed the different types of flavors, spicy kick, and texture of the brioche bun at Native. I didn't like the bun of the truffle burger. It tasted really dry, but it was crunchy so you might like that Freesoulini - this was more like a stir fry dish than a pasta. It wasn't bad but again, lacking flavor. I think it would be much better if they used the sauce from the meatball sandwich from Native Foods. It's much more flavorful and satisfying Overall, Freesoulcaffe is more for subtle flavors and Native Foods is more for those who want more flavor in their meal. Both are good but I enjoy more flavor as it makes my meal more satisfying I gave it a 3 because when we ordered the key like cheesecake, it came out with the top noticeably caved in, like the cake was collapsing in the middle. Hands down best truffle burger and food, but their customer service and flexibility could be improved. When I went last time, the hostess who is commonly there would not seat me until my husband came after parking the car. The place was empty...very rigid service. I told her he should be around the corner then she sat me. Lastly, just wanted a half soup cause we weren't that hungry but makes you order a full soup if there is not entree ordered. Downtown Tustin was a cool place to walk around and this cafe fits right in, cool and cute. Had a hip industrial vibe, but also homey at the same time. Had the Panini Frittata -- which the main ingredient were vegan scrambled eggs! Thanks Freesoulcaffe for introducing me to another form of vegan soy magic. Am I at the correct place? It's been over three years since I've last been to Freesoulcaffe and it did not use to look like this. The patio looks familiar but the interior used to be bright with a display of desserts. The atmosphere used to feel very casual. You used to order at the counter. Although they have a food menu, it seemed like the kind of place where I would order a smoothie and hang out while working on my computer. Now this place is more dimly lit, some would say a bit romantic. I wasn't expecting a full-service restaurant when I made a quick stop for dinner. At first, I was seated indoors but it was too dark for me to take food photos for you yelpers. I asked to be relocated to the patio and sat next to a sign that said something along the lines of this restaurant being a computer-free and work-free zone. The staff was super friendly, attentive, and helpful. My waitress steered me toward the Panini Poulet and it was so delicious! This banh mi-style sandwich had vegan "chicken", pickled daikon, and cucumber sandwiched between sourdough bread. It had this tasty sauce that reminded me of Japanese mayo. Very cute vibe! We stumbled across this vegan restaraunt walking in downtown Tustin, even though we aren't vegan. We ordered a ton of food, and the stand out was the Brussels sprouts! We also got pizza and pasta. The pasta was okay, we could tell it used almond? Sauce and wasn't as creamy. Pizza was also pretty good. I really wanted to love the food more here. I'm a vegan food blogger & my honest opinion is the dishes are just lacking in flavor & none I tried left me feeling satisfied. It seems they're missing those flavorful sauces& textures that really elevate a dish. I tried three dishes the shakshuka, breakfast sandwich, & potato hash. I'd genuinely love to help them improve their menu. Potato Hash : 5/10 Not very exciting. It needed more vegetables like mushrooms, it would've been better if the potatoes were crispy, & it was missing perhaps a vegan ranch/sauce or guacamole to add a much needed creaminess. The tofu in my opinion didn't make sense on here and wasn't necessary as it's plain & just looked sad. The best part about this was the small meaty bits in here. That was the only flavor I tasted & it was good. Breakfast Sandwich : 5/10 The bread was good but way to thick for everything else inside. The bread should never over power what's inside. I could only taste the vegan meat inside this sandwich which wasn't bad but it just was so plain. The sauce you couldn't taste at all as the bread is so thick it just gets absorbed into it. This really needs improvement & would be better. Shakshuka: 3/10 Very boring. It just tasted like a plain tomato sauce with again the plain tofu that's used in everything. It looked amazing as everything did but didn't live up to how it looks. This needs more vegetables and layers of textures. The bread was the only good part of this dish. The sauce on top didn't do much there was no hit of flavor from it. Oreo Cheesecake : 8/10 This was good! It's huge so split it. It had a nice chewy crunchy crust. Any place that has the keywords "vegan truffle burger" is a place that I will absolutely visit lol, and for the most part, this place did not disappoint. The positives: 1) The burgers (truffle and hatch) were pretty good, and use pretty unique ingredients. 2) Exterior patio seating is nice. The negatives: 1) While the burgers were pretty good, they do lack some filling, and hence can be finished in a few bites. At $14 per plate, I wish they came with a proper side too, not just some cheap greens (which weren't actually bad, but I wish they came with sweet potato fries or something). 2) We got the peanut butter torte as a dessert and man was it dense. Lovely spot for lunch! We sat outdoors. The decor and atmosphere were fitting for Old Town Tustin but still modern. We ordered a panini portobello and miso ramen. The panini was good but a little one-note in terms of its sour flavor. The side salad was average. I enjoyed the different textures and flavors of the ramen. I felt there could have been more toppings though; I was eventually left with just broth and noodles and decided not to take home my leftovers. For dessert we tried their oreo cheesecake and latte. The latte was average. The oreo cheesecake was a nice treat. I have no idea what the "cheese" part is made of but I enjoyed it . Friendly and caring service accompanied with a beautiful indoor and outdoor dining area. I would return to have the burger and try other options. Leo loved the pizza but I felt it needed more vegan cheese, more sauce, it was a bit scant of ingredients but it was flavorful. Leo enjoyed his white wine. I typically only write positive reviews but today was pretty upsetting. I have a lovely memory from here from a few years ago. I was reading a book here and drinking a coffee and having a salad in a window seat. Today the guy at the front asked if I was having lunch and I said I was looking to have coffee and dessert and he replied with "there are coffee shops over there and over there.. this is a full service restaurant." I might have been open to getting the lunch but it was how he quickly was like you can go to those places over there that was upsetting. I get times must be tough for restaurants but I'm sad that this happened. I feel almost ashamed that I wanted to go there for coffee and dessert. Then they brought me the bill and showed me a small inconspicuous sign in the corner of the room that said. "We are pleased to provide our guests a study-free/ work-free environment." Me and my boyfriend are regulars here, and we always leave happy, full, and completely satisfied. Our go-tos are the sautéed green beans (literally the most delicious green beans you will ever taste), the BLT, HLT, and the matcha granitas. Also their desserts, especially the pies and cheesecakes, are amazing too. Yes the food is on the pricey side, but it's worth it. The service is always great, attentive and quick. We also love the ambiance here, both during the day and at night--we love the beautiful courtyard patio with the fountain, and the candles during nighttime, it's a very romantic atmosphere. Ordered a pizza and a salad by phone to be picked up. When my husband and son went to pick up our order, they were treated pretty shabbily by the staff, who made them wait outside. My husband and son both have beards and my son has long hair, which was under a baseball cap. He said this place treated them like they were "Proud Boys" (far from it! ) solely based on their appearance. My husband and I are both plant based, otherwise why would we go to a vegan restaurant? The place only had a few people in it with plenty of sitting and standing room -- there was zero reason for them to be asked to wait outside for their order when the other people who were in there were obviously permitted to stay in. Both of them had been working hard all day, and both are also thoughtful, decent men who you treated badly based on appearance. Our son is not vegan nor plant-based, yet he wanted to treat his Dad and I to what he (and us) THOUGHT was a nice vegan dinner. They very much felt it was a clear case of judging one's looks by their cover. We didn't realize a clean shave and short hair was required to order a mediocre-at-best take-out pizza. Our son lives in Tustin, it wasn't a long trip home, yet the pizza -- the Vegciutto -- was soggy and flavorless. It was also cheese-less. That was our mistake as we just assumed ALL the pizza came with plant-based cheese (apparently only some do). The only "saving grace" was the salad -- it had chickpeas and kale and lots of good stuff. I can't remember the name of it, but it was the only thing I enjoyed. Too bad, as we won't be returning to Free Soul. This was our second trip there -- the first time was quite a few years ago, and we had a delightful experience back then and was so happy to see it was still there. Sadly it has since switched hands and the food, ambiance and especially the service isn't what it once was -- not to mention $45 for one salad and a small, disgusting pizza was way too much. As a vegan for 16 years, we know and expect we're always going to pay more -- but not for food, vegan or not, that tastes this badly. We love to support local businesses (especially vegan and plant-based), and now that our son recently relocated to Tustin, it would have been nice to have a Vegan go-to place when we visit (which is often). We'll have to keep looking -- sadly, Free Soul Caffe is a place we'll never frequent or order from again. read more

To start , the waitress was amazing, very attentive. I ordered the mushroom pizza. It was awesome. I always judge the pizza by the dough and crust. Very well made. Topping were awesome. Loved it. The reason I give this place 2 starts is because my friend ordered a fake pork ramen. She let me try it. The fake pork was cold in the middle and the broth was lukewarm. When she asked for them to heat it up, the chef refused to heat it up. His reply was if she doesn't like it, then order something else. Very rude and unprofessional. Rather awkward restaurant (you are made to wait outside on sidewalk when placing and picking up takeout orders) and even though restrictions are relaxed since mid June in So Cal they are still dramatically blocking customers from entering the establishment and forcing them to order from the sidewalk for takeout orders. This is EXTREMELY awkward as the outdoor seated guest are sitting there watching the dramatic blocking manoeuvre's of the hostess whilst listening to every word you say as you place your takeout order and finally the seated guests stare at you sitting and or laying on the sidewalk whilst you wait for your order to be completed. The two menu items I ordered were a bit pedestrian and were lacking expected flavor and flair so it's not worth driving to sleepy Old Town Tustin for this restaurant as 2 better and similar vegan options recently opened in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. read more

OMG! I love this place. First timer and despite what I read in the reviews regarding their policy of not being a coffee place I can understand why. It is not a large place inside. It's cozy and modest. Right up my alley. The service was great! My wife and I had the asparagus soup and it was so good! For my entree I chose the Portobello Panini and my wife had the Truffle Burger. Both are delicious! For dessert we had the Peanut butter torte and the Velvet berry cake. Delicious! We sat next to the bubbling fountain, out in their lovely atrium on a warm sunny Saturday in May, and were served by the delightful and gracious Lauren. We started with this Coconut Affogato (pictured) - strong and delicious. Then, we had the Green Tea Waffle with fruit - the green tea flavor was mild and the fruit was fresh; and the Vegan Ham & Eggs - accompanied by a well-dressed salad, the thinly-sliced ham was perfect with the vegan scramble.
