Front end employees, with few exceptions, have terrible (If any) customer service. Their managers seem to only be interested in defending their employees actions and poor attitudes. Beware the Child Drop Off attendant Rose. Pretty much never need help finding anything either, as I have had to hunt down help like wild game, or have asked 3 different people who tell me they don't know. There are the rare moments where service is good and the clerks are helpful. There are good deals and finds. Bakery is rarely ever there in the afternoon. I will not be using this store again as they insulted me as a parent and were writing nasty notes about my toddler. The manager on duty had the audacity to ask if I wanted it to be thrown out and given a new slip as a fresh start. So, as I said. If you need a place to walk around and will not need any help, by all means go here. read more

I can't go into this store anymore due to the homeless encampment next to the parking lot. There are signs on the street "No Parking 2 AM to 5 AM" that are not enforced. If you make the RVs leave every night they won't come back. That would probably also get rid of the tents that have sprung up there. Also, the shoplifting is out of control, only my conscience stopping me from stealing my groceries, too. Saw a girl steal a duffel bag full of stuff, set off the alarm. I told the clerk who shrugged his shoulders, did nothing. So sad. Update- I just spoke with the Assistant Manager, expressed my concerns and discussed possible solutions, she said she would relay the message to the Manager. We'll see if anything changes. Again today I watched a girl (not the one from yesterday) steal from the store and then empty the loot onto a table next to the parking lot, covered with a blanket. She didn't even have to leave the lot. Maybe a way for the crooks to say "it's not mine" once on the table. Probably wouldn't have talked to the Assistant Manager if not for seeing this. read more

This Fred Meyer can be a total cluster-function at most times, especially around the holidays. It's not as insane as the TJ's just down the street, but it's still close to chaos. It's a huge FM that sells the extended set of items including full furniture, which coincidentally is what we went in looking for. On a mission for some folding chairs, we fought our way through the parking lot madness and nearby street traffic, then fought our way through the crowds in store, to locate the furniture section. Lo and behold, we found a one day sale - folding chairs 30% off. Fate has never spoken more clearly to us. Despite the crowds and the chaos, many check-stands were open so our exit was quicker than expected. Overall, it's my go-to spot in Ballard for... well... anything. Gotta love it. read more

Ever wanted to get lost in a crowd? Here's where to do it! It's a behemoth of a store. Intimidating, large and I'm pretty sure there is a portal to another dimension somewhere near the vegetables. Every time I come here I find something new. "They sell shoes here. Oh look there's the paint and meat isle! And gardening supplies next to the coffee shop!" It's great to find all the random things you could want. However, everyone else is there too looking for the random things they want. One stop shopping... it's what suckers me into coming here each and every time... and I'm always disappointed. -Why wouldn't the guy in the meat department know where chorizo might be located... and why has he never heard of it???? (I found it after taking a few spins around the meat section... in that island fridge in the center.) -Scary fish!!! Stinky fish!!! Egad! Does ANYONE buy seafood here??? And if they do... WHYYYYYY????? The stench alone would give anyone reason to pause.... or run away. -Produce - Poorly laid out... maybe it's just me, but nothing makes sense in this section.... I never have a problem finding onions or fresh herbs in any other store. Weird. I do like the fact that there's a Washington Mutual there... and aside from my gripes about the food part of the store, I can't complain about being able to get anything from fishing poles to toilet seats.... well, I guess I could... but I won't. ;-) read more

If it wasn't so damn close to home I really wouldn't bother. However, there are a few nuances about this Freddie's that I like. 1) The Sushi Couple - they are absolutely the nicest people working at this Freddies. And the sushi is very tasty and fresh. They've got fresh rolls now which are good, filling, and cheap. In fact, I've bought and enjoyed thier rolls and nagiri several times over the last few years without incident, and in some cases fresher then an actual sushi restaurant. 2) Jane - This checkout woman is all business but she still always has time to make eye contact and say thank you. She's a fast cashier and bagger too. 3) Cheap-ass DVDs - Nuff said! And what I don't like about this Freddies can be summed up like this: - I'm a Fred Meyer employee but I'm going to ignore you for as long as possible, and if I have to talk to you I'm not going to look at you, or say thank you, or really acknowledge your presence until I take your money. If the Ballard Fred Meyer and the one in Greenwood were twins, Ballard would be the guy who as an adult discovered a mangled mass of hair and bone in his abdomen and found out he had eaten his twin (Greenwood) in the womb. In other words, the Ballard location is not disfigured or frightening. You can get groceries here, ones that are of a high quality and a reasonable price. It also doesn't have a scary dungeon like the Greenwood one, nor a disgusting food cart at the entrance that makes you want to turn around and walk out before even going in. Plus they have an optical department, a Chase bank, a Tully's, and coupons up the ying-yang hanging all over the store. Even though I live closer to Greenwood than Ballard, can you guess which Fred Meyer I go to? read more

In spite of the fact this is a now an established Kroger Foods...er..uh... establishment, I'm glad there is one located near our house in Ballard. Just about dead-center of Ball-mont, Fred Meyer is your One Stop Shopping center and if it didn't have so many things we need in a pinch, I would be ONE who would STOP SHOPPING there because I don't like the half arsed way they operate. With a few exceptions, Kroger-labeled / approved items are not as good as the name-brand items and are at times even more expensive than the name brand items. In addition: - Getting help finding something is a two-step procedure. First, you have to find a staff member, and then you have to find an older staff member who actually knows what the item is and where it is located. Happy hunting! - Rewards cards? This is a joke. You don't actually get on-the-spot discounts on anything (unless it's automatic) but every quarter you receive coupons in the mail. The majority of these coupons are for specific departments that I would hardly ever visit. The remaining two coupons are for like $2 or $3 off anything in the store and so for me and I'm sure the majority of people, I save a whopping $5 dollars a quarter. Like I said, half arsed! - U-Check terminals: I really appreciate the fact they have lots of these self-checkout terminals at Fred Meyer but some people (bless their hearts) don't and will never get how to use these things. They hold up the line and when the staff helping them get confused it can be quite entertaining to some (not me). I've used them so much now that I'm in and out of there in a few minutes (usually). I also know a lot of the fruit and produce codes by heart. Organic bananas =94011, Cameo Apples =3066, On the Vine tomatoes = 4664. We absolutely rely on this store at Christmas time and for birthdays for obvious reasons and a lot of stuff is on sale around the holidays. So, I can't quit going to Fred Meyer just yet. As far as one stop shopping places go, Fred Meyers isn't a bad choice. Although the majority of the store is composed of groceries, there's also a fair amount of other things: gardening equipment to furniture to clothes, and on. Prices aren't necessarily the cheapest in the area, but it's comparable to the other major grocery chains in Seattle. There are a few nice things here, including the self-check lines. I'm actually a big fan of this innovation: usually the lines are small letting me save time and I'm happy to bag my own stuff. It's made me believe that in a past life I was an 18th century stock boy. However, a complaint with their delivery service makes me give them two stars. Once upon a time, while waiting for a co-shopper, I was lounging on a couch in the store. I liked it so much, I bought it. The delivery service did not call to confirm delivery and instead tried to deliver at 6 am on a Saturday morning, leaving a note that I was not there (I was still asleep). The second time I got them to confirm a four hour time period, but they were a no-show. A third delivery time was agreed upon and they showed up several hours late. The delivery crew then stated that they were only required to drop the furniture on the property, not to actually bring it inside. To bring it inside would be an extra fee. Also they stated that going up any stairs (such as front stairs into the house), would incur an extra charge for having to carry the furniture up a grade. Subsequently, I left a complaint for the manager. To his credit, he called back and left a message. I tried returning the call three times, but he was always unavailable. Twice I went to the store (two different weeks, mid-morning), but I was told that a manager was not available and there was no one who could discuss the issue. The apparent evasion was effective and I stopped pursuing my complaint. But I also stopped shopping regularly at Fred Meyer. read more

Avoid self-checkout. Its a nightmare. The employees working it are the bottom rung on the cashier ladder for a reason. If you have any issue & need help they treat you as though you are a thief rather than a customer...or perhaps you'll get lucky and only get treated like a rude interruption. REPEATEDLY I have filled out surveys to complain but nothing improves, and no one ever contacts me from the local store. A few days ago Kroger Customer Service wrote me to ask me to fill out a survey on how they'd done. They hadn't done anything...why send a CS survey to a customer you didn't respond to?? Weird. The worst experience I have had at this store included a self-check employee laughing maniacally when I told her I didn't need her attitude (they get snappy if you get tired of waiting for them when the machine locks up on you). I think she should be in an institution. What kind of psychopath laughs at customers? I promise you that upper management at this store could not care less about you or the service you should receive. Its a Kroger trademark. read more

Wow. After a hour and a half of shopping in Fred Meyer for our Paradiso weekend we got to the till. They asked for our ID's, my husband showed his and mine was in the car. I went outside to fetch mine and came back after several minutes (because I couldn't find the car) .. when I showed him my South African passport he immediately said he's not comfortable with my husband buying their products because he's with an African. We asked for the manager, after the manager looked at my passport he chuckled and said to the cashier "what are you not comfortable with this?" And the cashier replied immediately "no I'm not comfortable with this at all".. The manager said it's the cashier's call and we left buying nothing! To not let my husband buy products from them because he is with an African woman is ridiculous. read more

Okay - so I am hesitant to post this because I want it to stay a treasure - but it is so great I just have to share! A couple of months ago Fred Meyer put in a deli kiosk. In the Ballard Fred Meyer it is located by the sushi bar. My only past complaint about this location was that the line for the deil always took over 10 minutes. Now, I come in, grab your cart and go straight to the deli kiosk! I enter my personal code and it brings up all of my past orders, I tap which ones I want and it gives me a ticket. This originally appeared on my blog but whatever... Strangely enough, stores such as Fred Meyer exist all over the U.S. but people in Seattle seem to think they're just the CRAZIEST things. "You mean I can get underwear and groceries in the SAME STORE?!" Yes. Yes you can. While much of the rest of the country is familiar with a chain of stores called Walmart, Seattle has taken up a state of siege against the forces of the corpse of Generalissimo Sam Walton. A man named Fred Meyer, a vassal to his master, the Kroger organization, mans a lesser army of superstores for the people of the Pacific Northwest. Even with the coffers of the Kroger group offering support, I don't hold out a lot of hope for Fred Meyer in the face of trying to emerge unscathed from the battle with the corpse of Sam Walton. I try to only go here at odd times to avoid the crowds. However, if you are a glutton for punishment or want to add to your hate of the world or find a good reason to slit your wrists, go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I'm sure that beneath the oppressively bright glare of the fluorescent light, your blood would make an impressive display that under other circumstances might be mistaken for abstract art. The contrast between the red blood and bleached white floors would no doubt be quite stirring. I can see the blood staining the floor and despite repeated efforts to wax and buff it away it would likely remain there for good until Fred Meyer was inspired to utilize it as a promotional tool to rally the troops against the corpse of Sam Walton. "This dull blood stain is a sign that our prices are so low and our selection so great that it can drive people to extreme lengths! While we don't condone suicide, we think this serves as an excellent reminder that we have some of the most devoted customers and we appreciate their continued support - even unto death." Of course their spin on the suicide would ignore how the crowds at Fred Meyer drove you to your death, but the raising of a shrine in your honor would slightly make up for it. One time I went here on a Friday night after a yoga class. I purchased the following: two cans of refried beans, a pair of jeans, some licorice, a jar of pickles and a container of Drano. I told the cashier that this was no doubt the most diverse group of products I had ever purchased at one time. She had seen it all. Her time served in the army of Fred Meyer had caused her great fatigue. It was unlikely she would last the remainder of the campaign. Perhaps she would go AWOL, be caught by Meyer's forces and shot against the bags of mulch (which were on sale, by the way) for her desertion. In a dull, expressionless response she said, "Well, this is Fred Meyer, it's kind of the whole point of the store." Indeed. I no longer live in Seattle but I wish Fred Meyer well in his war against the corpse of Sam Walton and his forces of low-paid, demoralized individuals. P.S. Years ago, before I moved out to Seattle, Maggie Vail from the band Bangs and the record label Kill Rock Stars told me that they sell babies here. ("Why not? They sell everything else there.") You would probably never know it existed because there aren't any signs along the Leary thoroughfare connecting Fremont and Ballard. I really do consider it one stop shopping. The Ballard Fred Meyer gets 5 stars alone for having a WAMU branch inside that stays open til 7pm M-F. After I do my banking I can pick up things I need around the house like bath towels to storage bins to black silk 'ahnderwear' and also groceries. For sure, they might not have the best selection, but for me, if they don't have it, I don't need it, no biggie. Also, they have a ton of check-out lanes, both manned and automated DIY -the latter comes in handy when buying unmentionables. (I.E.: condoms, personal lubrication, hemorrhoid cream, extra value package of tampons, antifungal treatments, The O'Reilly Factor Paperback, Bud Light, etc.) read more

For the Home department. Markum is amazing and a true angel. I wanted this sectional for over a month now but needed to wait because I don't have a truck or room in my current place to put it. I gave him my number long ago and he would call me every time someone bought what he has in stock. On Saturday he called me telling me someone who was interested in the floor model and it was the last one. He knew how much I loved this so he wanted to call before he let anyone else buy it. Went down within 20 minutes and purchased and he kept it overnight until I could get a truck. Picked it up today and he was just so excited for me! I love my sectional and I love the great customer service from everyone at the Home department. read more

I am always completely overwhelmed by the size and variety of goods to be found at FM. This FM in particular is my favorite because the garden center gets gigantic during the summer. I've bought hoses, plants, potting soil, compost, gardening gloves, tomato stands, containers, watering cans and bird feeding paraphenalia here. There is also a decent camping section and a large wine section - these go hand in hand in my world. I'm also a big fan of the Starbucks inside. My only complaint is there could be more local produce, and the help is sometimes spotty. Bonus: they sell christmas trees in nov/dec read more

Once upon a time, I was a freshman in college in Fairbanks, AK. I was introduced to this magical store called Fred Meyer. We had 2 in Fairbanks, one on College Road and one on Airport Way. The Airport Way store was big and beautiful and well lit and for a cash strapped college kid, I could spend an entire Saturday there on like $5. Sadly I moved away from that magical place and lived in various cities without the benefit of the Fred Meyer. And then I moved to Seattle. I've tried other Fred Meyer stores... the one on Broadway (before it became QFC), the one out in Edmonds (SKETCHY!), and one in Renton before being reintroduced to the magical beautiful Fred Meyer. The Ballard Fred Meyer is the Fred Meyer of my dreams (and memories). It is huge. It is clean. I can find everything I could possibly want and a whole bunch of stuff I didn't know I had to have. They have a decent Gluten-Free food section (stupid Broadway Fred Meyer now a QFC got rid of many of the GF foods I seem to be only able to get at Fred Meyer). I find it almost impossible to get out without spending at least $75. read more

Love that there's a giant grocery / home goods / clothing store between Fremont and Ballard. In addition to your standard groceries, you can also pick up hardware tools, garden equipment or even furniture. I've also found that associates are pretty abundant (if you can't find someone at the hardware desk, you can pick up a phone and an associate will be over to help you in a minute) and very helpful, not like Walmart or Target where you can't find anyone ever to help you. One thing to note is that they put the "organic / health" foods in a different section of the store, so stuff like noosa yogurt, eggless mayonaisse, or cliff bars are found in that section of the store. read more

I love Fred Meyer's selection, food and affordable clothes and the staff are great but this location has in the last year it has become over-run with people who are either on drugs or need social service help. There are tents and campers all around the entrance and trash lines the sidewalks. Yesterday a man with blood all over his hand was checking out before me and we had to get someone to clean up after him. Then outside an unconscious guy was on the curb near our car. We asked the armed security guard to check on him and he acted like it wasn't his job and instead asked if we had a cell phone we could use to call for help and then we got yelled at by a guy on his bike for getting the security guard. The one on 85th doesn't have the same problems. read more

Great prices but poor customer service - lots of staff but no motivation to help customers - ever been to the deli at 5pm when they have one person working there or nicely ask 2 out of the 4 people in the produce section to fill an item that is empty - and there reply is "it will be awhile before I get to it" (as they fill other items that is already semi full). I came back thirty minutes later and it was still empty (I had to go to Safeway where I normally shop). They do care about their customers. read more

The REAL Fred Meyer spells his last name Meijer and is from Michigan, with great Meijer stores spanning the state and I think some in Ohio too. Over there buying at Meijer is the next cheapest thing to Wal-Mart but it is a much more ethical chain. Okay, okay, so this review is supposed to be about Fred Meyer in Ballard but its hard not to review it in comparison. Fred Meyer is a large grocery/dept. store that carries all the groceries you need but also clothes, housewares, and many other items. I just think it is poorly organized and that the prices aren't good enough to pull me out of my Safeway, Trader Joe's, Qfc, and Target combination of shopping. If you live in the area and the benefit of one-stop shopping is a great convenience for you, you'll probably like this place. But if you don't live near one, don't worry, you're not missing much. read more

OK...I GO HERE FAR TOO OFTEN. If some place doesn't have what you want, this gigantor store has everything and anything on the planet that you would want. HOTTIES?: Occasionally, I do find some hotties who work there; but, definitely I find there are hotties who shop there. So, eye-candy, gf! lol So, while you're shopping, you can look at all the people there. SERVICE: I like that they added the self-check system, so that gets me out of there if I'm in a hurry. When I've needed some help, I can often find it from the people who work there. If I can't find someone who works there, I strike up a conversation with some hottie walking by, pretending it's my first time there. :) FOOD: It's interesting that Fred Meyer has food at their store. On that end of the Fred Meyer, they have the self-check out stands too. CLOTHES: Um...well, the clothes are cheap, but that's true of any low-to-middle range department store. Comeptitive. SHOES: I have too many shoes as it is, but I like to look to see what they have. PARKING: The place is surrounded with parking, so that's not an issue. COOKING SUPPLIES: I usually end up going there to find any of the Fred Meyer small cooking appliances, pots or pans and stuff. BATHROOM STUFF: I often go there for the cheaper priced bathroom stuff like rugs, towels, washclothes, and so on and so forth. GO THERE AGAIN?: Of course! I go there too often now. read more

Fred Meyer is my go-to place for just about everything! The prices are reasonable, and they carry a wide variety of things. FM is where I get paper towels, kitty litter, and other random household items. I also like that FM has a great organic produce section - I can often get farmers market quality produce without having to wait until the Sunday Ballard farmers market. So, if I need Swiss chard on a Thursday, I can get it at FM. I get my hazelnut milk, hemp milk and coconut water from FM... they seem to be the only place around Ballard that carries those items at a reasonable price. They have a GREAT natural, gluten-free, dairy-free aisle! The huge store is easy to navigate through. The staff is always very helpful. And, it doesn't matter if I use the self-checkout or have a cashier check me out... I'm always in and out of there in no time. read more

This is another Chase location I like. If I am running late I can squeak in at 7pm and sometimes a few minutes after. Rachael T. has gone over the top to look up old checks for me spending an hour if needed. She is great and so is the rest of the staff. They are interactive and smile. They ask about my day and remember the last conversation. They will even say hello if you run into them at Trader Joe's or in a parking lot. I look forward to dropping in to this branch. It is also great for one stop shopping. I can get cat litter and organizing veggies until 11pm. I wrote this for Chase but if I was to complain about anything it would be at the check out over at the Fred Meyer side where they are forced to ask you if you have a Fred Meyers points card. I wish like many people that question could end. It is about as bad as some of those stores that ask you to donate to special causes. I don't hate this Fred Meyer...but I must say that after Christmas Eve shopping there I was a bit disappointed. Its just that I am used to going to Fred Meyer and being able to get anything...clothes...gifts...and most importantly food. Even the Fred Meyer in Kent has food. This Fred Meyer was easy to find, but finding a parking spot in the completely uncleared parking lot was no easy feat. My mom nearly scraped a hole in the door of my car out of fright. She was sure we would see our death in the Fred Meyer Parking lot...Now granted, they aren't alone. Many businesses did not clear their parking lots during the recent snow show, but to me, it shows a lack of concern for the customers. Fred Meyer in Ballard is HUGE.... I could have easily gotten lost there, and in fact did lose my mom and son (luckily they were together.) Were it not for the fact that we had cell phones, we might have been lost forever. Our adventure with Fred Meyer Ballard ended much sooner than expected when we could not find a grocery section. And now there's a Tully's to help fuel your shopping engines...hey, at least it's not a Starbucks... Did you know you can ask for a FREE sample of ANY cheese, salad, deli meat, hot food item, etc? Not sure if you want to drop $18 bucks a pound on that Oregon Blue or go with the $8 pre-packaged stuff? Sample it for free and see if you can taste 10-dollars worth of difference! I love that I can get a pair of Levis, a 6-pack of wine (10% off!), and a cordless drill all in one place. I absolutely MUST take a list into Freddies, and I can NOT go in when I'm hungry. I think if you separate all my expenses since moving to Greenwood, they would fall in this order. -Rent -Car -Food -Sh*t I bought at Fred Meyer I can honestly say I've probably spent a couple thousand dollar at Freddie's in the last 2 years. So, what is on your list today? If you go to this store before like 10am you can never find what you need. Mostly because nothing is stocked. they claim that people have been there all night restocking. I also get the fact it is the busiest store in the area and is pretty big, however, they have had a crew of stockers there ALL DAMN NIGHT and stuff is still cluttered and more employees and their crap in your way than anything else. This tells me you either need more or better people working your overnight stocking shifts in order to keep up with client demand. that is how you run a successful business. yet, you are a big box store, if you were smaller and pulled this shit, you wouldn't last long in business at all. Ask for a manager to bring my concerns too, the cashier starts sticking up for his coworkers (don't blame him) and then a manager comes up. he listens to about 2 words and starts to walk away from the register and not even listen or try to have a convo with me. thanks a lot ryan, that was very managerial of you, ignoring a customer concern like that in customer service. Then tell me your store manager isn't answering his phone. I did not ask you to call him, I asked you to page him, I heard nothing on the overhead intercom so good work on not doing your job on that front too. I honestly only go there because it is close to home, now I realize, I should have stopped shopping with this company when I still lived in PDX since I had similar issues with their store on Barbur Blvd/burlingame synopsis: Fuck Fred Meyer. After F.M. changed their ads to run Wed. thru Tues. to match other stores in the area, I was expecting to find their ad in the weekly Wednesday circular. ...not to be. So I made a call to Freddies and ........ Now, it's expected that we purchase a "daily paper" ($1.50) to access their ad OR make a trip to their store, - UNLESS we care to go on-line which takes more time than I'm willing to spend. Normally, after making out my grocery list from their Sunday ad, I would then pick up their digital coupons, - which took more time than what it was usually worth. None-the-less, with this list it made it easy to go in, shop and get out. Now, it's much more INCONVENIENT since I don't subscribe to a "daily paper", I would have to find a place to buy a copy AND pay $1.50 to get their ad, OR make a trip to their store WITHOUT a list in hand, OR spend more time on-line. I do not care to spend my time scrolling through the countless items listed on their on-line ads . I hope F.M. comes to their senses and publishes their ads in the weekly circular LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, so we can PLAN AHEAD WITH A LIST. read more
