Wow! WHAT A LINEUP. We are so glad to find a solid place making Italian varietals and all are ESTATE. Tasted: 2012 Charbono 2012 Bel' Bruzzo (like a Brunello) 2011 Barbera 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Cabernet Franc 2013 Zinfandel Every wine was a solid representation of what that varietal should be. Joined the club, bought two Barbera and a Cab Sauv. Really smart pricing with club discount. Carol tempted us with very appropriate nibbles to compliment the wines. We are so sorry it took us more than 6 years for steady tasting at over 60 wineries in Paso to find this great place. Those of us of Italian heritage will feel right at home. If you want incredible, Italian varietal wines, look no further. Fratelli Perata was my first winery visit, brought by a friend, upon my relocation to SLO from SoCal. Now, it's the first we hit when we go tasting. One, to bring in our friends with clean palates to fully enjoy some of the best wine in the valley. Two, to visit Carol and her family for a chat. I love this winery!!! So much so that I didn't think twice about joining their wine club. -Their wines: the only do reds, which only makes me love them more. I haven't had a wine here yet that I haven't enjoyed. They're all perfection! My favorites are the Barbera, the Bambino Grande, and the Charbono. -The people: what I love most about this winery is the Perata family. Each and every one of them are so down to earth and friendly. I'm greeted like family every time I walk in, making for a wine tasting that's both knowledgeable and passionate. To top it all off, wine club members get a packet of "tech sheets" with each shipment chock full of information about your bottles, pairing suggestions, and even a recipe tested by Carol herself. My first winery review! crazy. The day I visited Fratelli Perata, my companions and I got a very knowledgeable driver to take us to designated spots. Then we had a bright idea - hey you, driver man, what's your favorite winery in the area? lo and behold, Fratelli. We settled onto an outdoor patio, sitting at a round table with umbrella and spread out a ton of picnic food we had brought along. Our gracious driver insisted he hand deliver the pours. We were floored. I was with the 2 owners of the small boutique wine shoppe I work for and my sister. Each wine coming out just kept getting better and better. Fratelli Perata grapes root back to 1980 and the winery focuses on producing vines with fewer clusters through "dry-farming", resulting in small berries packed with intense flavor. In Paso Robles, it's easy to come by wines whose grapes have been "over-worked" and you end up with a ripe, somewhat indiscernible, "flat" wine. Not at Fratelli. Great care is taken in the wine making process in a predominately Italian style winery. The wine had lovely rustic/barnyard distinction in palate and nose. The varietals came through clean and elegant, with excellent balance. I loved every single wine, but especially enjoyed the blends Tre Sorelle and Bambino Grande and single varietals chabono, petit syrah, and cab franc. Time for another trip to Paso! read more

***DISCLAIMER: Anything I write in a winery review about the actual wine is based on my personal tastes / opinions / palette and is not intended to be taken as an objective measure of quality or deliciousness. (I would think this is obvious, but apparently not.)*** Each trip, we always try to hit a few places we haven't been before. This trip, Fratelli Perata was the big win. After one whif of the first wine, I was paying attention. A few wines in, my bf & I were staring at each other going, "Ho-ly shit. How the hell did we not know this was here???" (Because it's apparently been there forever.) FP is a tiny, family-owned and -operated winery that's been doing Italian varietals for something like seven generations. Not surprisingly, the tasting room is also tiny (& is all of 50 feet away from the family's house). Carol, the winemaker's wife, was pouring the day we were there and was extremely friendly & knowledgeable & happy to tell us all about the wines, their history, the history of the winery & family, & even shared her favorite pairings for all the wines. All the wines are super food-friendly with nice acidity but also with plenty of fruit & complexity - they're certainly just fine without food. We wanted to take home so much more than we did - seriously, everything was amazing. Some of our favorites were the Mafalda (Bordeaux blend), Bamino Grande, Cab Franc, & two grapes that were new to me, Charbono & Bel Bruzzo. Most of the wines are in the $20s & $30s - a steal at that price point. (The charbono, sadly, was priced at $48, probably because of its rarity - there's something like 100 acres planted state-wide.) We luckily came across Fratelli Perata winery about 10 years ago on a recommendation from another winery. If you enjoy big reds, you will love this wine. Carol, owner/wine maker, is always friendly and very informative. We have never had a Fratelli wine we didn't LOVE. Your problem will be deciding which of their delicious wines to take home. We are members of their wine club and look forward to their shipments twice a year. FP sends along the spec sheets and a recipe for each wine with each shipment. You will be hard pressed to find a better value in Paso. Next time you are in Paso, veer off Hwy 46 on Arbor Rd to Fratelli. You will not be disappointed. You will discover delicious Italian red wines graciously served by the wine maker, Carol, or her daughter in a beautiful family owner winery. read more

Fratelli is one of the relatively unusual wineries in the area as they do mostly Bordeaux rather than Rhone grapes, evidenced rather clearly by their Italian name. So that being said, if you like the French wines more, head for Tablas or one of the other wineries in the area. The flavors here are big, bold, and mostly RED!! First off, they're only open Thursdays through Sundays and it's best to call for an appointment (basically just to let them know you'll be there and make sure someone will be on hand too). My boyfriend and I called and left a message the day before we went, we got a call back saying to stop in on Thursday any time. Very friendly and not pretentious at all so don't be afraid to call up. In fact, the whole experience was a bit stereotypically perfect. After a beautiful drive out there, we pulled up and the premises is absolutely charming - pretty sure the house where the Perata family lives is directly next to the tasting room. There is a great little gazebo with breathtaking views right next to the parking area for pictures. We walked through a cute little garden into the tasting room and one of the daughters, Joann, came in right away to start pouring. She was EXTREMELY knowledgable as well as friendly (did a degree in viticulture, I believe) and we had a great time chatting with her. The entire family is obviously extremely involved in all parts of the process. The wines themselves are impeccable. I'm a broke college student and happily paid twice as much as I've ever spent before on a bottle of wine for one of their Zinfandels. The aromas are rich and distinct, and Joann told us all about the (recommended) aging of the wines and what pairs well with them - which was the only person we visited our entire trip who did that so naturally and right off the bat! Great big flavors while still being totally palatable, and she was very generous with the pours, unlike lots of places who will be a bit stingy with it. Wish I had a bit more money, I'd definitely join their club with zero hesitation. Absolutely the best winery in the area in my opinion. read more

This boutique winery doesn't show up on a lot of maps, the tasting room here is small, off the beaten path, up a dirt road and very little parking. Some guides recommend making reservations, though I never have. The tasting experience can be slightly off for some tasters I've brought here that have been conditioned to expect the fruit forward style of Paso. The wines in the tasting room can be tight with a moderate dose of acid and tannin (in a good way). Varietal consistency can vary slightly from year to year because the wines are all dry farmed with each vintage expressing the conditions of that year, no apologies! Some wines they produce are good to go younger such as their Bel Bruzzo or Zinfandel. But if you have the will power to hold some bottles for at least a year or two you will be rewarded handsomely. I just opened their 2007 Tre Sorelle (Bordeaux Blend) and it was magnificent. They do a Sangiovese that exemplifies how well these wines can bloom given time in the bottle and time to open. The Cabernet Reserva, if you can get any, is as good as any Cab I've tasted in Paso. The WINE is the greatness of Fratelli Perata. No fanciness. No big pickup parties. I think they only recently offered wine dinners for club members. This is food friendly wine here folks with moderate alcohol. All the wines here are flavorful, extracted, and deep in color. Enjoyed that the grand-daughter was pouring In the outskirts of Paso Robles wine country, it was refreshing to find a tasting room with a little life in it. Four different groups bellied up to a bar approximately 5 feet long with two staff pouring. I enjoyed listened to the grand-daughter explain that when the founders came from Italy, they picked northern San Luis Obispo county because the landscape reminded them of home. The small vineyard makes approximately 2500 cases with a handful of Italian varietals and blends. The highlight was the late harvest Zinfandel; but sadly, the others were nothing to write home about. It's a shame - perhaps we just got this place on an off day - the wine was good but the service stunk to high heaven. We were here during the wine festival weekend - so maybe they were just overrun by the crowds but I still don't think that's any reason to be rude. The atmosphere was almost party like with live rotating performances, bocce ball, snacks, and free-flowing wi....oh wait, no not really. They had two table set up with ladies pouring wine. I'll use that term loosely. The 'gal' we had was super rude - everyone was hanging around the tables, but when our group was poured a splash of wine she loudly parked "PLEASE BACK AWAY FROM THE TABLE AND MAKE SPACE FOR OTHERS." Um, okay thanks. No one else got yelled at and she had barely finished pouring for us. That meant fighting to get back in to the table every time. My sister went to the other table at one stage and was reading through her list and the other gal yelled at her she was looking at the wrong list and at the wrong table. Nice attitude "ladies." We said a big screw you internally and left. My Mom and her hubby are members there - and we noticed that not only were members given a sticker on their glass (I guess it makes it easy to see who to be nice to) but they were also allowed to eat the tasting snacks. They had this peculiar sign about how due to some ordinance only members were allowed to eat. Huh? read more

The winery grounds are pretty, but the lady doing the pourings was waaaaaaaaaaay more interested in the "older" group people buying bottles and bottles of wine; they got very generous taste pourings while hubby got barely enough to cover the bottom of his glass. Our session at the winery was better than we could have hoped for. We were met by a family member as we walked up to the tasting site, and a member of the family was always with us the rest of the time. The daughters it seems have taken on the majority of the business load for their parents as vintner and accountant, but the whole family is still there at the vineyard. We tasted their wines, talked about how the wines were made, the land, the wine business, the weather, well, it was great. The sun was out with a slight breeze so it was like a picnic. We could have stayed all day but the ladies have to keep the winery going so that's not going to happen. My wife and I wish them well in all their endeavors. Came here during our memorial weekend and my, my, was it toasty. Warning, if it's a warm day, don't expect it to be A/C because there is none. The tasting bar table is small and side to side, can only fit 6 people - hardly enough room on a modestly busy day. For 5 dollars we tasted 6 red wines. The wines were good, but not memorable, at least not for us novices we were wine tasting for our first time. The really lack luster aspect of the winery were the servers. They didn't explain their wines further beyond what was written on the wine list and unless you seem like a big spender, they probably wont be pay much attention to you if there are other people at the bar. My friend and I are WILLING to buy a bottle of win if the experience is a positive one, but this winery fell short of our expectations. There was no one on one experience, it wasn't educational, and I was grateful to leave. Unless you're a knowledgeable wine connoisseur already, you probably will this place to be very forgettable. Eventually the table cleared up and we were one of three people at the bar table, and the servers awkwardly stood there and made little effort at conversation. Only reds! My kinda place! I stopped here en route from LA to SF to take myself on an adventure to break up my drive. I chose this winery because I love Italian wines. It was a beautiful vineyard and a cute little tasting room. The tasting included like 8 different wines! Rad. I think I fell in love after testing the sanguiovese. Fantastic. I decided to join the wine club even though I typically stick to more local wineries so I can easily pick up my wine. This is only our 2nd time in Paso and this was our 2nd visit to Fratelli....both times we walked away with at least 2 bottles. Lovely, complex wines. Not all winners to our tastebuds but I think there is something for everybody who loves Italian varietals. both times we have walked away with the Tre Sorelle, Zin. This time they had a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo which was mighty good. We missed out on the Sangiovese (not released) but just another reason to drive up the coast and visit. read more

This place is awesome. After hitting a number of too close for comfort poseriffic tasting rooms we made our way down a dirt road an up a small hill to exactly what we had been looking for. A small winery where you speak with the owners/winemakers and not some zealous dweeb who is repeating a high minded spiel he lerned at orientation. This is a family business not some monster wine mill. The wines are good, great views,enjoyed Acacia Berries, Cheese and crackers. $5 tasting fee waived if you buy a bottle. Super friendly and informative owners who are excited to tell you about the family, the wine and themselves if you ask. The house on the label is the old family house in Italy.... First trip back since joining their wine club last year, and this continues to be our favorite Italian wine house in Paso...and their wines rival many of the Italian wines I buy from the old country. Bel Bruzzo was a big hit with us, but the Zin was also fantastic...first sip, and the next sip with a choc raspberry bit supplied by FP just exploded with chocolate flavors. Excellent Italian reds! This place is a gem. If not to buy wines, just experience the wine tasting and you will learn so much. We loved the Sangiovese and can't wait to open the Cabernet Riserva that was included in our first Wine Club shipment: SIX bottles of REDS! Yes, it was a no-brainer on joining. We had the pleasure of meeting Carol and Geno. Generous pours -- you can tell they just enjoy winemaking and taste the love in each sip. In our short visit, we met some long-term club members that had only positive feedback about the wines. Such nice people: a man who I thought worked there turned out to be a club member (offered to share his dark choc candy), a brother (foodie from Indiana) and sister (so sweet) that were so friendly and warm, and a man knowledgeable about wine and beer (shared some Belgian Ale info) from Ukraine. (Visited October 2008, Harvest Wine Weekend) Fratelli Perata was one of the smaller wineries on my last trip, and was one of the exceptions to the zinfandel and Rhone trend that many Paso wineries have been embracing. They do have a syrah, but their catalog is mostly Bordeaux and a few Italian varietals. They also had several of my favorite examples of certain wines found on a fairly lengthy trip. I tried just seven, but really enjoyed all but one. First, a big merlot with a wonderful, lingering finish. And while merlots weren't rare in Paso, this was easily my favorite of the trip, period. They also had a great Bordeaux blend that was mostly cab franc with a little merlot and petite verdot mixed in. Their 04 cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel were nice, but were of a gentler style than found at many of my other stops. However the 2004 Cabernet Riserva was one of the best cabs of the entire trip. I also really enjoyed the 2005 Bel Bruzzo, which is made of montepulciano d'Abruzzo. I've no clue what the difference between this and other montepulcianos is, but previously I'd never had one I liked. In short, it was a fantastic stop that I intend to hit every time I'm in town. If I had any complaints, it's that the tasting bar can be a little cramped. But trust me, I'll put up with it. read more
