We discovered Ecluse two summers ago on our first trip to Paso Robles wine country, drawn in by the reasonable tasting fee, the fact that it's family owned and operated, and that it's family friendly. What we didn't expect was to be completely blown away. The facility is on the smaller side without a lot of frills, but honestly that's part of the charm. The staff are warm and genuine, and you can feel their pride in both the winery and the wines they produce. The focus here is on GSM blends and other Rhône varietals, along with Bordeaux blends and varietals -- big, bold, and fruit-forward, but balanced enough to keep things interesting glass after glass. We had such a great experience that we joined the wine club before we left. We don't live locally, but the Ecluse Enthusiast membership is absolutely worth it -- especially with only a 6-bottle annual commitment. It's given us a great reason to make Paso an annual trip, and Ecluse is always one of our must-stop favorites. Since joining, the winery has gone through some exciting changes. They've built out a beautiful terrace overlooking the vineyard, and they were acquired by Thibido Winery. We were a little nervous about what that might mean for the brand we loved, but they've stayed true to keeping both labels separate and distinct -- and we've only benefited from it, since we now get to taste wines from both when we come for our annual pickup. We can't wait to spend more time on that terrace during our next visit. If you're putting together a Paso Robles wine itinerary, Ecluse deserves a spot on it. read more

Loved Ecluse so much we ended up becoming members! This winery had been recommended to me by some other people who frequent Paso, so while planning our November trip down here we decided they were a good contender. After looking at their website and reading that they specialize in French style reds and offer a barrel sample with all of their tastings, this place quickly jumped to the top of our list. We didn't have a reservation, and it was getting close to their closing time, so we called ahead and asked if they had room for us, and we were told to come on up! We were helped by Sandy, Michael, and Steve (who is the owner). Just in our first three pours, we were helped by and talked to each one of them. They were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable on the wine, and very fun to chat with. The vibe here is super casual and everyone feels like family. We really liked all of the wines and getting to hang out in the barrel room, plus the hospitality was great, so joining the club was a no-brainer. We ended up taking home our shipment and two other bottles that we had tasted that weren't included in the shipment. All the hard work of the vineyard manager and team are realized as the production crew destems and sorts the fruit before fermentation. We joined their club in 2024, came back for a tasting in the summer of 2025. They were super accommodating because we were there during the week when they were not hosting regular tastings, but went ahead and made arrangements for us to come in and do our tasting. We received the same up close and personal tasting as we did the first time. They have recently merged with another vineyard as well, the current owners are retiring. We started our Saturday tours at Ecluse Wines and we had a blast. We scheduled our tasting and we were off immediately once we started. The tasting area is casual and comfortable inside one the main buildings. Out back, there's a nice lounge area with views of the vineyards. You definitely get a family owned friend vibe here. We were so fortunate to have the owner Steve as our wine educator! He was so down to earth, friendly of course knowledgeable on his wines. We learned about the whole process from beginning to end. His story telling skills were fantastic as he shared his story of how he started from the beginning. We tasted some of the insider straight from the barrel which prompted an easy purchase decision from me. I'm not a Chardonnay drinker per se, but I always keep a couple bottles around for my friends and during the Spring time. The Ecluse Chardonnay is one of the tastiest I've had which also prompted a purchase. Chardonnay 2021 Insider 2020 I would definitely recommend a visit to Ecluse Wines when in the area. They have excellent servers and an amazing view from their terrace. I would bring some snacks to enjoy if your planning to sit on the terrace. After visiting the 2 behemoths of Paso Robles (Daou and Justin, both wonderful), I went to a small boutique winery, Ecluse. Wow. An equally wonderful experience but a totally difference one. A reminder to how it used to be. $15 tasting, $0 with 1 bottle purchase (it was a free tasting pre-Pandemic). Hosted by proprietor Steve Lock (so nice, welcoming, knowledgeable), both he and Michael (Educator, likeable, scientific, warm) gave us (gf) and another couple such an amazing experience. Each wine in the tasting I really enjoyed, 5 of them, and at last a few bonus tastings. Loved. So much, I joined the club. With events (music, food, other), I'll be coming back often. Had a fun time at this boutique winery. I've been visiting over 100 wineries in the past 4 years and this one is a find. Small, quaint, wine tasting room with barrels that the owner let us taste his latest gem (photo below). Nice and cool on a hot summer day in Paso Robles. The Tannat was a unique, great tasting wine. I had to take home my limit of 3 bottles, in addition to others. If you want a less commercial wine tasting experience, with plenty of variety of delicious wines, this is a place you want to seek out. Reasonable prices as well. This family run Vineyard is tucked away on Kiler Canyon Road at the end. Once you reach safe passage through the canyon (seems like killer canyon) , you end up at a beautiful Vineyard that has varietals for merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah with a Chardonnay from Edna Valley. Pretty simple set up in the barrel room with barrels for your tables to wine taste on. Love that they had breadsticks for us and we even bought some of the local peanut brittle. Phenomenal view from the back on their terrace and we were lucky enough to have the wine maker, Steve host us with Sandy for a lovely sampling (Malbec tasting from the barrel ) and a library wine of their 2009 Zinfandel.. In a region full of great wineries, this little gem stands out. We first visited based on a recommendation from our great Airbnb host. We loved our first visit and wine so much we joined the club. Here is why this place is so amazing. In addition to having friendly and knowledgable servers, we met and chatted with the owner as well. He is an absolutely friendly and humble gentleman. Included in the tasting is a pour from the barrel. I always love tasting in the cool barrel room, but it is absolutely divine to relax outside with a glass of wine (or bottle) and enjoy the view. On one hot summer day they were kind enough to bring out some fan misters for us as well. Great wines at a nice price point and not too far from downtown. read more

Ecluse Wines is situated just outside of Paso Robles,about a mile up Kiler Canyon Road. The views of the vineyard covered hills and the distant peaks is stunning at this winery! They have outdoor patio seating where you may enjoy a bottle of purchased wine, while enjoying the view. Wine tasting, being a very personal and subjective matter, I would not say that the wine is good or bad. We've enjoyed going to Ecluse Wines every year for over a decade. Every year the wines win gold, silver and best of class medals in the San Francisco wine competitions. This year our group attended a private seated wine tasting at Ecluse with Anthony, the winemaker. Heard about this place on Reddit and it's close to downtown so up Kiler Canyon we went for our one tasting of the day. My goodness am I glad we didn't have anything else to drink that day. There was the menu and then the off-menu samples, and the other off-menu samples, and the tasting from the bottle that they just happened to open on a whim. Everyone we spoke with was lovely and gracious about my child. I'd return with a picnic to enjoy either at their picnic table or Terrace. read more

A note: this review is for a visit to their tasting room that was, at this point, a few months ago (the weekend before Christmas) - we spent a weekend wine tasting in Paso Robles, and I'm still catching up on reviews from all the places we visited. So the specific wines we tried may have rotated, but the tasting room as a whole is unlikely to have changed much. Anyway, my primary goal was to hit as many wineries as I could that I wouldn't have to pay for tastings at - several were from a wine pass we'd bought earlier in the year for a previous Napa trip, a few were "free with yelp checkin", and a couple were comped from our hotel, but this one is none of those, it is just free, free for everyone, no limitations or hoops to jump through, pretty rare in California, but always nice! And especially nice when everyone there is super friendly and excited to tell you about the wine they make, like here. I loved how unpretentious the tasting room was, too, after a couple other giant ostentatious tasting rooms we were at previously. Don't get me wrong, those are fun too sometimes, but sometimes it's also fun to taste wine in basically a nice barn, much closer to where the wine is actually *made*. In fact, on that note, while the other wines we tried (a very good Rhone white blend, a very good zin, and 3 different pretty good red blends) were all enjoyable, the final tasting here was definitely the winner: their port, served straight from the barrel it's aging in! Yes, still for free! Well, free other than we ended up buying a bottle of it. Funny enough, on the drive up, we specifically made a promise that we weren't going to buy any more port, because we had too many at home already, but Paso Robles-area wineries are just making too much good port! It wasn't cheap, at $36 a bottle, but it's *extremely* good port. read more

I have a friend who occasionally pours wine at Ecluse. I thought I would check it out. I was pleasantly surprised at what a gem this winery is. We checked in for our reservation and was kindly greeted by Martha. She set us up for tasting and once again we got lucky as Anthony was pouring that day, Anthony is in fact the winemaker. He shared some great information with us. Halfway through our tasting, Steve Lock, the owner joined us and also gave us in depth history on both the winery and Paso Robles which he has truly seen grow over the years. This winery is unpretentious and yet feels a bit upscale. We tasted approximately seven different wines, including one barrel taste. There was not a wine any of the four of us did not truly enjoy. The Chardonnay was very good and then moving to all the wonderful full bodied reds. It was truly a treat. I decided to join the wine club giving both support to the winery and allowing myself to take home such delicious wine. I did this even before we went out onto the terrace. What a perfect spot. The view is beautiful and I can only imagine bringing cheese and crackers next time to sit and enjoy the wine while relaxing in such a perfect setting. Out of all the wine tastings I did in Paso, this one was my least favorite. The outdoor seating didn't have heaters, the server wasn't attentive, and the wines were okay. It seemed like the server was trying to get us in and out within 30 minutes while at other places there was no problem staying 1-2 hours. She just gave us the wine, told us the name, and left. No explanation for how the wine was grown, how it tastes, nothing. The wine pours were also on the smaller side. Out of the 5 we tried, I only liked the Zinfandel and Insider. I didn't like the white and the other two reds we had were okay. The one silver lining was the owner who came by our table and talked to us. read more
