Very casual spot with a down to earth vibe. They've got big reds that are aged a few years, so they're in a good drinking age range. The small tasting room is next to an auto body shop in an area you definitely wouldn't expect to find a tasting room. They have some bench seating outside and standing room tasting at the bar inside. We opted for outside since it was a gorgeous day. This spot had been really hyped up to us for how fun and raunchy it can be (while still having really solid wines), we didn't get much of that outside - so we'd probably opt for a bar tasting next time to get a little more of the personality. The tasting menu had 6 wines, one white and 5 big reds. We ended up taking a bottle of their On the Road grenache home with us. Wines were a little more expensive than a lot of the other wineries we frequent here, but not absurdly expensive. read more

We have been on the Herman Story wine list for years. To us this is what Paso Robles is all about. It was so great to return to the scene of our intro to this wine country. We came here 2 weeks ago to attend their annual pick up party and it did NOT disappoint! We showed up right around the time it started and while it was busy, there was still plenty of street parking and we didn't wait in line too long. The party was poppin' off with unlimited tastings of all their delicious wines as well having Mexican food to snack on, massage therapists giving 15 min massages. They even had several animal handlers onsite with a python snake, a tarantula, a capybara, an alligator, an owl and a lemur! There could have been more that I just did not see, but it was so cool! The space was both indoors and outdoors and there was plenty of wine to go around. They even had an area where you could pay $150 for a mystery magnum bottle and the chance to win dinner with the owners! We didn't win but came back w/ a nice magnum bottle of wine. I worked in Marketing and Copywriting and was dazzled by the descriptions of his wines, part beat poet, part train of thought, and part no BS. The best descriptive wine copy I've ever read! The label art is outstanding and humorous supporting the ethos of " take your work seriously but don't take yourself too seriously". The wines are fabulous, well balanced and structured showcasing the rich fruit. The tasting room may be cozy but it's an expansive facility that supports other winemakers. Big bold unapologetic red wines made by some of the coolest people in the business. Ever visit a winery and have the owner/wine maker offer you a Coors Light? Nope didn't think so. Russel is a legend and a heck of a nice guy. He doesn't take himself too seriously, but he sure as hell takes his wines seriously. He's the type of dude my friend and I would just chill and BS with over whisky and cigars. I love supporting people like this, and will be a Herman Story wine club member for years to come. It is not a vineyard, it is a tasting room in a small warehouse park location because they source their grapes rather than grow them If you like big, bold, fruit forward, unctuous full throttle wines- then RUN to Herman Story! Came here for a taste yesterday with an appointment. Only got an hour to hang due to them being so busy so the pace was a little fast and the pours were smaller in comparison to what you get from other wineries but the wines are spectacular. Some of the biggest boldest reds in the area. We are members here and I am excited each time we go here since their wines are top notch. I never found out what Herman's story was but I sure enjoyed their wine. Herman Story Wines is tucked away in a little strip plaza near a tire shop with a wine barrel room in back of the tasting room. Tasting is conducted at a bar or outside at a picnic table. Nothing fancy, just good wine. During our visit we explored several wines but our host was unable to open and let us taste their Syrah. He did however allow us to purchase one so my tasting will be conducted at home. Herman Story is known for making big wines. To this I agree. We enjoyed each wine poured and loved the creative labels. We enjoyed the entertainment and stayed for the wine - something like that. Really, a statement like that would lead you to believe "I'm not so much under the afluence of inchohol as some theople pink I am". How do you like that happy horseshit sports fans? I've been secretly eyeballing Herman Story Wines for ages. In fact, it's been a bookmark for a while now. And when Luke W wrote a glowing review I knew I would have to pay HSW a visit next time I was in Paso Robles. I wine taste quite often - no shame in my wine game! But I tend to venture out to wineries near vineyards in and around the Paso Robles area. I've never really tasted within the confines of the city limits. But we decided to be bold and stick to the square area for lunch and a little wine tasting. Herman Story is across the tracks and next to a PraxAir. Yep. It's a little industrial. There's not a lot going on here, so you'll be hard pressed to find patrons just stumbling on in - but I'm sure it's not out of the question. We came in on a Monday afternoon to find a larger group of tasters finishing up. The wine pourer was a younger girl, and while very nice seemed a little bit green when we had some wine questions. There was no "have you been here before" and then transition into the history of the winery. In fact, we had to pull the information out of her. It wasn't until I asked to see the gorgeous winemaker book behind the counter that she pointed out the owner's wife was also a winemaker (the owner of Desperada Wines in Tin City). I'm not asking for a sommelier lesson, but I do expect a little backstory to the winery, owners, styles, and basic wine tasting knowledge. All wines use French Oak. Which I do love. It gives a creaminess to the wines that just infuses every sip. It also gave a great fluidity to the tasting. Every new bottle tasted like a chapter in a book - becoming ever so slightly bolder. I enjoyed that. In both my friend and myself bought two bottles each. She inquired about the wine club, which I'm sure she would have joined had there been any kind of pitch. But in the end, she took the literature for another day. I'd definitely return, simply because they're doing pretty great things so young in their game. read more

Holy crap! That's right, I said it....I'm describing their incredible wine! This is just a little tasting room and warehouse just about a block or two away from DownTown Paso Robles. So no, you don't get beautiful vineyard views, a fancy tasting room, or even the option of purchasing a Charcuterie board, but what you do get is DOWN RIGHT AMAZING WINE paired with some of the best service in the region. I ended up with a couple of bottles of Casual Encounters (which I had tasted before and loved) and a couple of bottles of Bolt Cutter which knocked my socks off! Years ago during my first trip to Paso , I knew that I couldn't possibly visit as many wineries as I wanted to. What a first-world problem. Ahead of a post-2020 lockdown road trip, I instantly knew that I needed appointments for any wine tasting... so I started doing some homework. This English major fell hard for the pithy creative writing on the H.S. website and as a recovering fruit-bomb cab lover, this garage winery made my shortlist. Yes, H.S. in located in downtown Paso... but you know when your mama warns you about the "other side of the tracks" -- in this case, the 101, you should pay attention. These "kids" are having a little too much fun (and a lot less "serious" than other tasting rooms). H.S. hospitality began with excellent hospitality, i.e. the ability to snag one of the final tastings for the day when my travel time was running behind schedule. The east side of the 101 is more industrial than boutique tasting rooms on the west a la 12th and 13th Street. And that frankly is a great setup for the fresh (think 2019), big and bold red wines we tasted at a picnic table on the relatively busy Paso Robles St. Kudos; the table cloth, bud vase, and Sonos playlist boosted ambiance! While only one (the only 2018 on the list) of the six pours made my palate sing, I wouldn't quickly write off Herman Story Wines. I took a calculated risk on a library wine and anticipate it to age well. Also engagement with staff and regulars brightened my day. * Note to any wine-tasting newbies, get comfortable with the fact that you may not like every wine you taste -- but ask yourself what you like or don't like about each. Went to the Herman Story tasting room in early July and we had an amazing experience! I have been looking forward to going for a very long time! We got there about 30 minutes late coming back to the LA area from Monterey. Stacy came out to greet us and invited us inside (apparently it was about 105°at the time, which I didn't know). They had opened up space in their warehouse for several tasting tables (about 15' apart. They were very dog and kids friendly). We had a flight of 5 wines all of which were delicious, but a couple really stood out! Everything about the experience was enjoyable. We will definitely go back! My wife said it's pretty impressive when someone can read his customers vibe and adjust their approach accordingly.
