Loved this family run winery! Everyone was so nice and informative. You can easily make and change reservations online. Our plans changed and instead of having 3 people for a tasting, we ended up having 5, and they were able to accommodate us no problem. We chose to sit outside where we could view some vineyards across the street. Of the 3 wineries we visited, this is the only one where they brought the wine tastings to us rather than doing the tasting standing at the bar. It made for a more relaxing experience in my opinion, and our group was able to talk and eat the charcuterie board with enough space on the table. The tasting was quite generous, and at the end of the tasting, the owner asked us if we wanted any additional tastes of anything which was a really nice touch. I also really enjoyed hearing the owner's story and which grapes they grow and where they grow on the property. read more

Alta Colina is a family-run vineyard and winery located near Paso Robles. It was founded in 2003 when owner Bob Tillman bought 130 acres of land. Meaning "high hill" in Spanish, the vineyards are located at one of the highest altitudes in the region at 1,800 feet. We stopped by their tasting room near the end of the day and fortunately they didn't require a reservation. The room itself was not super big but the workers were friendly teaching us about each of the wines. We shared a wine tasting ($30) which included five of their offerings. Of the tasting menu I enjoyed the carbonic grenache, GSM, and the old 900 syrah. At our table was a map of the vineyards and what they grow on each parcel on land. We didn't do so but from the looks of it you can even drive through them to check them out yourself. read more

We went to Alta Colina due to their excellent reviews, both on and off Yelp. While the wines were okay, of the lighter variety, I wasn't impressed enough with any of them to buy a bottle or two, which I almost always do. It was also the only winery where two in our party dumped out their wine. The tasting area was also just a parking lot adjacent sitting area, so not as attractive as other spots. To be fair, we all liked their grenache blanc better than the Tablas Creek variey. read more

We came upon Alta Colina by coincidence and are so, so grateful we did!! The wines in the tasting were delicious and diverse - we loved the full-bodied white wine and the slope syrah. Ivey served us - I've been drinking wine for years, but I learned so much from her. You can tell she really loves working at Alta and loves the whole process. We were lucky enough to also have Bob, the founder, stop by to say hi. He even took us on a full vineyard tour in his truck and told us about the history, the process, and the grapes. I don't know where to begin with our experience at Alta Colina. We came by as a group of four on a June weekend, excited to try their wine and check out the property. We come to Central Coast once a year and we love to explore wineries in the area. Driving up to the property was easy, check in was seamless, and then things went downhill from here. We were shown our table for tasting which was outside, right by the parking lot in the front. I was a bit confused at the time, but didn't say anything to our host right away. We started with our pours, and what felt like for each pour was just a splash of the wine. It was not enough of a pour to actually taste the notes of the wine. I have been to several wineries in Napa, Sonoma, Healdsburg, Paso, etc... and this was the smallest pour I have ever seen. Our host was also very much occupied with another larger group at the time, and we felt very much neglected. The amount of pour we got, did not equal the time waiting for our next one. It felt like we were waiting forever for her to come by since we finished our pours very fast, then another host started helping us. Lastly, we were not impressed with the wine. This place was highly recommended by local friends, and I was expecting the gorgeous views which is all over their website and Instagram. It was a bit deceiving of marketing on their end. At the end of our tasting, I had to go back and let them know we needed to move on to our lunch reservation. As I was paying for the tasting, I expressed my concerns to the staff and though one of them seemed empathetic, the other did not. I strongly do not agree with the price of their tasting with the amount of pour they offered, and I did voice they need to be a bit more transparent about their tasting offers (pond/trailer versus a parking lot). Our tasting experience was lovely and we enjoyed the customer service provided. We didn't like any of the wines we drank so wouldn't head back for that reason alone, but really every year and varietal is going to be different so if this is on your list you may enjoy the wines more than we did. We have a lot of wineries to drink through in Paso so won't be back for this one. Our wine flight was $25/person. I think they waive it with 3 bottles purchased, but we didn't buy any wines so paid the $25. There's an outdoor patio, as well as some limited indoor seating. We were able to come in last minute on a very hot Friday afternoon and appreciated their flexibility, but probably best to plan ahead. read more

I've visited Alta Colina twice now and both experiences have been exceptional! Each time I've been here it's been with my friend who is a wine club member, so we've really gotten the VIP experience. The first visit we did a private cellar tasting. The dark room with the string lights and towers of wine barrels surrounding us created the most beautiful wine tasting atmosphere. This experience was a great introduction to the winery. We learned a lot about the varietals at the vineyard and a bit about the wine making process. Bob, the owner and winemaker stopped in to say hello and joined us for a little bit. Although I thought that visit would be hard to top, the second visit was even better! This time we had a private summit tasting in the Vineyard with none other than Bob himself. We hopped in his truck and rode up the mountain to the top or the vineyard where we had expansive views overlooking the vines and the rolling hills. I was in absolute awe the entire time of just how beautiful our view was. There's just something about drinking wine surrounded by the vines the grapes came from! Having Bob as our host for the morning was a true treat, we were able to talk with him about how the winery came to be, the different soil types and why specific vines were planted where they were. Overall this is a great family owned winery, you can tell how much care goes into the wine, and how much they care about and want to know their customers. Looking forward to my next visit! read more

I booked a private tasting for the wife and I last week while we were celebrating our 20th anniversary. Our host took us in his truck up the hills behind the tasting room to a large oak tree where we got to taste wine on a shaded patio with a nice cooling breeze. We passed their pond where they have 5 or 6 small Airstream RV's that are available for rent. Seems like a cool place to stay in Paso. We really enjoyed the Rhone style wines they offered and our host gave us a lot of great knowledge about the winery. read more

We reserved to go to the summit, where there is patio with a beautiful view of the vines. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, so Emily, who was a great employee and very kind, brought us to a private tasting in the barrel room. The table we sat at was made from a tree that was cut down on the property, as it wasn't producing anything. It looked very cool and had a split in it. All of the wine we tasted was delicious. She taught us about a screw cap wine that doesn't lay down and can be drunk now. That's my kind of wine. It was called Down slope. We bought a bottle and it was priced right! We are happy to be members here! The best part of all was when Bob Tillman, the owner came by. We talked for a bit and he invited my husband and I to go in his truck for a ride around the property and see the beautiful views. What a treat! We loved our experience! read more

Already writing a review because Ed is the man and Alta Colina is my new favorite vineyard. I hadn't heard of the wines here but came per recommendation and was not disappointed. Wine? Amazing. Service? Phenomenal. Think all the quality you hope for but without any of the pretentiousness. Pair that with an excellent and friendly staff and you've got yourself an incredible tasting. I visited another tasting room and was a bit disappointed with my experience. It felt like the stuffiness of Napa and had wines from different vineyards. Not here - all of their wines are from their vineyard and everyone is down to earth and ready to tell you everything you need to know about what you're drinking without making you feel like a wine idiot. One word to describe this vineyard - Fabulous! We went up to the Central Coast to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday and my dad's 94th birthday. I had booked reservations at several vineyards throughout the week for us to visit - Alta Colina was by far our favorite! Melissa greeted us when we arrived. It was a beautiful sunny day, so we sat outside. Melissa was so knowledgeable on the tasting wines and explained each one in detail - all were delicious! It was hard to choose which ones we were going to buy. The owner, Bob, came over to say hello. My dad is a Veteran and so was his dad. We all agreed that at this vineyard they make you feel apart of their family. We ended up buying several bottles of wine, the cans of wine (I loved the design on the cans), Olive Oil, and an Alta Colina glass for my daughter as a momento. This winery has it all...amazing Rhone varietals, beautiful view (be sure to sit outside), knowledgeable and friendly staff. Alta Colina is an absolute must when you are in Paso. If you are fortunate, you will score a tasting experience with Ed, a genuine foodie that educated us about Alta Colina's sophisticated winemaking practices, as well as all of the best restaurants in Paso. The Toasted Slope Syrah is heavenly, but the real star is the Vin de Paille dessert wine. I had nothing like this at any of the other wine tastings. I don't normally go for sweet wines, but this is perfectly balanced and the honey finish is divine. I will certainly return and am excited to do their Hilltop Tasting! read more

While in Paso visiting the bestie, she said she wanted to taste at this winery, as they are known for growing and making delicious mourvedre wine. In fact, Paix Sur Terre, whom we love, sources some of their grapes from this winery. We stopped in and had a lovely taste and chat with one of the owners. As some have said, the $20 tasting fee is pretty steep in Paso, but after tasting (and then buying) some wine, the fee was waived. Beautiful spot, great wines, friendly people. Im usually not a huge GSM blend fan but Alta Colina makes one of the best ones around! Even if you are not a fan of Grenache or Mourvedre this is such a quality version that it may surprise you, and if you are a fan of GSMs you will be in heaven. $20 tasting fee, or waived with a two bottle purchase. Bottles in the ~$50 range non-club. Only bummer is we left our bottles at our friends house and didn't realize it until we got back to LA. Just another return to go back and visit! read more

In the search for something safe and fun to do on my birthday, I came across Alta Colina's website. On their website I read about their To-Go Self-Guided wine tastings. Unfortunately, they were sold out on my birthday. Fortunately, I called and they were gracious enough to squeeze me in. We arrived at the vineyard at our scheduled time, picked up our wine tasting kit, and were giving directions on getting to the deck in the middle of the vineyard. The kit includes four 4oz bottles of wine, cups and literature on each wine we were about to taste. We sat on a bench on the deck, drank wine and enjoyed the beautiful views. This review is a massive shout out for IVEY! I work across the valley at another winery, and from our patio I would always see this ridge line covered in vines, with a massive single tree right in the middle of it. I always wondered where and what that location was, and it turns out it's the summit tasting deck of Alta Colina. It's one of the best vantage points anywhere in Paso, so picturesque it was featured on a billboard for Paso wine country! Anyways, I decided this would be the perfect place to propose to my girlfriend. I literally planned it one day in advance for a busy Saturday, and Ivey was incredibly sweet and gracious over the phone, more than happy to accommodate us at the last minute and very excited to be a part of our love story! She gave us a two hour window up there, all by ourselves. I purchased a few bottles over the phone, picked them up the following day, and we drove to the top of the hill. It was incredibly windy but the proposal went off perfectly (she said yes, of course) We had tasted there once before, and the wines are absolutely lovely. I can't recall the older gentleman's name that hosted us, but he was incredibly warm, friendly and knowledgeable. He knew the wines inside and out and was more than happy to accommodate us for a walk in tasting. Everyone we've dealt with at Alta Colina has been extremely friendly and accommodating. There's a lot of great wine in Paso, and over the years the places that stand out the most are the ones where the employees seem happy, excited to host you, and knowledgeable about their wines and histories. After reading several positive reviews on Yelp of this vineyard, my partner and I decided to try a tasting while we were in the Paso Robles are for the weekend. What an incredible decision it was! Upon arriving we were greeted by Ed, who offered us so much history about the wines, the owners, and the passion behind entire Alta Colina brand. We enjoyed our wines overlooking a peaceful, beautiful hillside. I genuinely appreciated how few crowds were here, especially in times of COVID. And yes, this wine is great! We even left the vineyard as it's newest members. For dinner that evening when we saw an Alta Colina Grenache blanc on the wine menu at dinner we knew we had to get it. While the wines were a real treat (some of my favorites I've tasted in quite a while), Ed was the real showstopper. We even received a thank you note after joining the wine club in the mail from him. These are wonderful people. During a weekend of wine tasting in Paso Robles, Alta Colina was definitely the highlight. My two friends and I reserved a "behind the cellar door" tasting, which was so worth it at only $20 a person. We were warmly greeted with some wine when we walked in, and then Malia took us back to their barrel room, where there was a great little tasting prepared for us at a beautiful walnut table. It was a bit chilly back there, but luckily blankets were provided! The wines here were all fantastic! And Malia was super friendly and did a great job of answering all of our questions. She even took us on a little tour of the production facility and crush pad. I decided to join the wine club because I loved it so much, and now look forward to an excuse to come back here at least twice a year. The next day, I asked my friend to rank the five wineries we had gone to - and her response was "Alta Colina, Alta Colina, Alta Colina." If that wasn't enough, about a week later I received a handwritten thank you note in the mail from Malia! I can't wait to go back! read more
